I love this story of the paintbrush that paints pictures that come to life! This version for beginning readers is nicely told. I find many books written for beginning readers to be written in a stiff, unexciting manner, but this one was well done. In addition, the protagonist is a girl, which is not the case in other versions I've read. Combine this with Laurence Yep's The Magic Paintbrush, Robin Muller's wonderful picture book The Magic Paintbrush, and Demi's Liang and the Magic Paintbrush.

I was constantly checking this book out as a child and read it at least 50 times. Despite that it was only recently that I bought the book to own for myself. I reccomend this to any child (especially a little girl). Basically it's about a little girl named Tye May who is given a magic brush that can bring her drawings to life. The emperor hears about this and has the girl brought to him to draw for him. However, Tye May cleverly outwits the emperor. I'm not going to say how, or specifics, but I am going to say read the book to find out!

Wonderful book! A level 2 or 3 reading book. My 6 yr old loved it and couldn't stop talking about it! A fantastic story with lots of imagination. Highly recommended!

This was a pretty good little Chinese folk tale. I especially liked that the emperor was expelled without some great drawn out battle scene. It was justice with a sense of scale. Altogether, it was a nice piece of storytelling, and the illustrations though minimalist were very well done. I enjoyed them at least.
