Acclaimed author Jennifer A. Nielsen brings her signature twists and high-stakes action to the fifth installment of the New York Times bestselling Ascendance Series!
King Jaron has outwitted the Prozarians and returned to his own kingdom with one secret in his pocket that not even his friends know about. He's hoping that secret will help him finally bring stability to Carthya.
But a surprise attack on his own land -- on the castle itself -- reminds Jaron that nothing is easy. The Prozarian Monarch threatens to crumble Jaron's entire kingdom. And that's not the only thing in danger: With old enemies and new rumors circling around him, even Jaron's relationship with Imogen is uncertain.
This former False Prince will need his best tricks and many allies at his side to hold Carthya together.
Jennifer lives at the base of a very tall mountain in Northern Utah with her husband, three children, and a naughty puppy. She loves the smell of rainy days, hot chocolate, and old books, preferably all at once. She is a former speech teacher, theater director, and enjoyed a brief but disastrous career as a door-to-door pollster. In her spare time, Jennifer tends to panic, wondering what she has forgotten to do that has allowed her any spare time.
The original Ascendance Trilogy is one of my favorites of all time. So I was incredibly excited when I found out she was writing more books, but also really nervous. Would the books be the same? Would they still be as good? Would they all have the same magic? Happy to say I thought they did hold up!! I loved them so much! Jaron is one of my favorite characters of all time, I still love Tobias, Imogen, Finke, Mott. This book series is honestly so fun, and it was really fun also to see Jaron grow up and grow into being a king. :')
I love this series so much!!!
~~~~~~
OH MY GOD I DIDN'T KNOW THERE WAS MORE I'M SCREEEEEEEEEEAMING.
i feel lost, like i just finished a movie, except the movie was 9 years long. i actually don’t know what to do with myself. my life as a reader has been so tied to these books and characters that i don’t know how to process that they’re gone ?? it’s over?? i’m no longer the age these books are meant for ?????
it’s so ironic that we begged for a wedding. and more jarogen. jen really said uno reverse hahh. so much pain i loved it lol.
as much as i want these books to continue forever, if this is the last one (which it really seems like it is) i would be satisfied with how it ended. a spinoff about fink, however? yes please hehe.
spoiler here:
if disney+ can make a pjo series, they can darn well do this.
one more thing: jennifer said if there was a sixth book, she’d know what would happen. i don’t like that they continue existing for her and not for us. no fair! 😂🥲
ACTUALLY ONE MORE THING (a quote, of course):
this was a year ago:
I have mixed feelings about this book already! I am so excited for this book, but I also don't want this to be the end of the series (for real this time!)
All I'm going to say is that there MUST be a wedding in this book, if not Jaron and Imogen's, then at least Amarinda and Tobias's (please!).
King Jaron is about to marry the love of his life, Imogen. He is looking forward to peace in Carthya. Just days before the wedding, the Prozarians launch a sneak attack on the castle. Chaos ensues as loyal friends are injured and their outlook uncertain. There is a new monarch in the castle with an old enemy of Jaron's as her Steward. Only a wise old man named Levitimas can help Jaron use the scope to find the treasure he is truly in need of -- a peaceful kingdom with Imogen at his side. But how will her achieve that goal? Filled with royal intrigue and Jaron's signature shenanigans, this is the climax and fitting end to the series that fans have been waiting for. Enjoy!
*I received an eARC of this book through Edelweiss+ in exchange for an honest review*
The Shattered Castle is the fifth and final book in Ascendance series, which starts with The False Prince. This series should be read in order, if you haven’t read it yet I highly recommend doing so.
With the fast pace of The Captive Kingdom, epic battles reminiscent of The Shadow Throne, funny moments comparable to The Runaway King, and the heartbreaking backstory of The False Prince, The Shattered Castle is the perfect ending to Jaron’s impossibly epic journey. Once again, Jennifer A. Nielsen delivers a gripping coming-of-age story about courage, friendship, and love.
Six months after the battle in Belland, Jaron is back in Drylliad and ready to marry Imogen. Yet things aren’t as peaceful as it seems. Enemies coming from everywhere—both the expected and the unexpected—threaten the very existence of everything he holds dear. As he loses connection to his friends and knows nothing of their whereabouts, Jaron must fully trust his companions to make the right decisions. As impossible as it seems, Jaron gets himself in the worst situation he’s ever faced.
Readers will learn more about Jaron’s past, explore several parts of the castle, and see his biggest nightmares come to reality. Some of the most beloved characters, including those we didn’t see in book 4, also make a comeback. Get ready to meet and fall in love with new characters as well. Friend or foe, you ask? Again, for Jaron, the line between the two is always ambiguous.
The Shattered Castle is not merely a continuation of the storyline, though. I’ve always loved the consistent theme of growing up in this series, and this book is no exception. It’s amazing how it adds so much depth to the character development. Jaron stays true to his character throughout the story, but that doesn’t mean he never changes. Every time I thought I already know Jaron, he didn’t hesitate to prove me wrong. Even after four books, he manages to surprise me, and this time I finally fully see him—his secrets, his fears, his delicate heart. It’s so inspiring to see him grow tougher through all those battles, confront his past and guilt, and become an even better person in the process.
The character development is not limited to Jaron. I love how his friends grow stronger with him and how they show their courage and loyalty in this book. Through the interaction between them, the author captured the strength and preciousness of the purest friendship. I’d thought the original trilogy was perfect. It was not until I read this book that I realized how much was missing for these side characters, and I’m glad to see them live up to their potential.
With four previous books, Carthya was already a familiar land to readers. However, the author didn’t neglect world-building because of that. The Shattered Castle sheds new light on Carthyan history, as well as explores deeper into Jaron’s Castle. We even get maps of the castle ground and Drylliad!
Though I love this series so much and would never complain about more books, The Shattered Castle serves as a good closure to the whole series. The ending is simple and satisfactory, but I do wish we could have seen what happened to some side characters afterward. I was also able to predict some of the plots, but there were still lots of brilliant twists that left me pleasantly surprised. (OK, maybe not always pleasant. I shouted out of excitement and dismay several times.)
The Shattered Castle is the epic conclusion to Jaron’s story. If you already love book 4, I guaranteed you will also love this book. Even if you didn’t enjoy book 4, I believe you will be blown away by the development of the story. For those who have only read the original trilogy, I urge you to read on. You won’t want to miss Jaron struggling in his shattered castle.
Okay, so full review to come, but it'll probably just be a link to the review on my blog. Which will be a very spoiler-y review where I mostly rant over certain characters, fangirl about Sage, and express my undying love and admiration for this series and Jennifer Nielsen's talent!!!
Also, I'm sure some of y'all are wondering: Did I cry at the end? I did get teary-eyed, but not because of what was happening or the fact it was over. It was for an entirely different reason which I plan to discuss in my review. And that is all I'm giving y'all. Just read this book and the rest of the series. YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!!
Now *returns to my sobbing over the end of the series*
This was such a good book!! I'm so sad to see the end of the Ascendance series (for now, at least XD), but this was a satisfying end nonetheless. I probably liked The Captive Kingdom a little better personally, but this was still an amazing book!
Jaron never ceases to amaze me with his strength, but I was glad and excited to see him waver a bit in this book. Not everyone is as strong and invincible and he is, and I appreciated that this book explored those weaknesses of his and showed us what he looks like when he's truly vulnerable.
Man, there were some characters I was really upset with for a while, especially Willa and her band of goons. She made a really good antagonist, and I liked how her and her people wound up in the end.
And it was good to finally see Imogen step out of Jaron's shadow and finally show what she's capable of. There was one spoiler that confused me a bit, so I'll likely be posting a lengthier, spoiler-y review on my blog, since there almost seemed to be a plot hole to me? I could be wrong, though. ;)
Anyway, this was another amazing book in the Ascendance series and I really enjoyed it!
I have enjoyed reading The Ascendance Series. It has inspired me so much. This book is enjoyable and has so many lovable characters and laugh-out-loud moments. One thing I especially love is the passion portrayed through this series, and it has inspired me to be more passionate to fight for what’s right and what I believe in. Sage may appear selfish (and some characters claim he is), but far beneath the surface, Sage is a character who will fight and never give up for the people in his country so that they can remain free and uncontrolled by enemies who try to take over Carthya. He doesn’t give in to the enemy. Fighting till the end isn’t easy; it’s hard, but I admire Sage’s perseverance.
Those of you who have read this book know that there are SO MANY wonderful quotes, but one stands out in my mind right now. It was when Tobias tried to convince Sage to surrender. In response, Sage said, “If I kneel once, my legs will learn to bend.” Not every form of surrender is wrong. I surrender my life to the Almighty God and kneel before Him. But in the case where I don’t need to surrender is before the world and the enemy. The world/enemy is pushing at us, demanding that we give in to what it wants from us. Here we don’t need to kneel nor surrender because if we give in to the world/enemy, we have lost. All this to say that God has used this book and series as a whole to teach me new lessons and ignite a passion in my bones for Him and for people.
Content Cautions: This novel has clean language. However, some things to be aware of is that it used the word “stupid” a couple of times, and it describes Sage and sometimes Fink as “cursing.” Additionally, Sage makes mentions of “the devils.” (He makes mentions of “saints” too, but “devils” come up more often.) There is also some violence since there is fighting and war, but nothing too graphic. I would recommend this book to readers about twelve years of age and up and anyone who enjoys medieval-type fantasy and action stories.
Oh my lands. That was......really really amazing!!! There was so much action!!! Nielsen really jumped right into it XD I was a little surprised. But it was a great conclusion to one of my favorite series. I loved going back to all the characters I've loved for years, and meeting new loveable characters as well :p
I listened to the audiobook. It was really good, tho I didn't love the narrator sometimes. But overall I highly recommend the audiobook!
The only complaint I have is that the characters didn't seem to age very well throughout the series. In my mind, they're all still 14 or 15 😂 and I think they might be around 17 or 18 in this book, which is still too young for some of the things that happened. Oh well. Who am I kidding? It was a fantastic book.
Please please read this book ASAP guys. It was perfect!!! Worth the wait. Oh, also I cried a lot. Prepare yourselves 😁
Though I'm very sorrowful this series is over, I must admit that The Shattered Castle was a spectacular conclusion to the Ascendance series, written by acclaimed author, Jennifer A. Nielsen <3
Okay, can I just say that this book was just awesome?! There were times where I just couldn't put this book down! It was that good. The suspense and intensity was great, so one again I can say that Jennifer A. Nielsen's writing was absolute perfection! Jaron's adventures were, as always, crazy and full of plot twists, and that's what makes this series so wonderful. It's sad to me that this series is already over. 1000000/10 would recommend. If you love medival fantasy, suspense, romance, and action, this book (and series!) is for you.
※Reread Rating--4⭐, but I will keep my official rating of 5⭐ due to the value of first impressions.😊
This series is not one of my favorites anymore, as on reread I just did not enjoy it nearly as much, and our MC just got on my nerves.🙄 He was also WAY to young to have I did like this particular book, with the caveat below regarding Captive Kingdom. However, as a series, it just doesn't hold up to rereading. Not to me, anyway.
※Original Review Ok, so this is the 3rd time I've come back to edit this review. Anyone else not able to let go of a review once posted?? Third edit at bottom. XD
Whew! What a ride! As frustrated as I was with Captive Kingdom, I am satisfied and pleased with Shattered Castle. Our MC finally grew up without losing his clever and self-sacrifical personality. Several people really get to shine in this story, which warmed my heart. [Edit to add that they don't actually get much time on the page. It's all done outside of our knowledge. This is very much an Imogen/Jaron story, with a smidgen of Tobias and Fink.] And I absolutely love the ending, which I won't spoil here. And even the final paragraph or so! How clever of Nielsen to "borrow" those lines! So poignant!
As this story is centered on a romantic relationship, I feel this is better as a YA/Teen book. There isn't anything inappropriate, but I just find it more suitable for teens than middle-grade kids. Also, there are several references to curses being spoken, though none are written out.
Edit to add: While I did love this book, I would not have needed it were it not for Captive Kingdom undoing all that happened in the 1st three books. I wish Nielsen did not write Captive Kingdom, but since she did, I am thankful for The Shattered Castle. Thankfully, she put all the CK pieces together again by the end of TSC, and I will concede, they were put together even better than at the end of The Shadow Throne.
So, this review has been a long-time coming, but I'm finally sitting down to do it.
I loved the original trilogy. It's one of my favorite series, actually. The twists in the plot are epic, the characters are unique and both lovable and infuriating at the same time, and the emotional experience is real. Haha!
That said, when Nielsen continued the adventures of Sage and co. I was simultaneously excited and nervous. Sometimes when authors go back and add books to old series...things can get messy or be a little disappointing. But my love for Sage was far stronger than my trepidation XD So, I bought and read book 4. And it was good! It wasn't the best thing ever. It did change some things and I felt a little conflicted about that. But darn it if Nielsen didn't drop us off on a cliff hanger. So, I committed to reading book 5.
And, boy am I glad I did! This last book was sooo good! The story and the characters really came full circle and made book 4 worth it. (And that epilogue that's not in the physical book!!! Why?! Why is that only in the audio book?! And HOW DO I GET MY HANDS ON IT?!) The conclusion really was a treat. It felt much more like the original trilogy to me. Adventure and risk. But also growth and the characters we love. The risk that Sage takes and his clever plans. The warring between six different plans up in the air and the distrust and struggle with loyalty and treasure. It was just a really good story!
I still think the original trilogy cannot be beat. And if you wanted to just stop there, I wouldn't be mad. But this last book made the duology worth it for me. Also, the covers are just stunning! (Also, kudos to the publishers for keeping the redesign of the original trilogy close enough to the original covers that you didn't alienate all of us who love them!! I wish more cover remakes considered that!)
All that said, I enjoyed this last book. <3 It was a fun adventure with both beloved and new characters, and the twists and wit I loved so much in the original trilogy.
There's some fantasy violence, no swearing, and a clean romance (fraught with uncertainty! I almost forgot I knew the ending because of the original trilogy XD). It deals with themes of trust and vulnerability, of love and loyalty, and of teamwork and true treasure. An excellent MG novel I'd highly recommend.
This was an excellent conclusion to this beloved series!! Jaron and his band of misfits were back doing what they do best.
I absolutely adore these characters and am so sad to see that its ending. Jaron is such a unique character and he definitely is the star of the show.
This installment was just as good as the others- Action packed with so many twists and turns made for an exciting ride. Lots of things are wrapped up in this one and questions answered. I was really shocked and holding my breath as new truths were revealed.
This is an excellent series for all ages to enjoy and its just so bittersweet that its over. I am secretly hoping and praying for a spinoff series... if you know you know...
I just think that would be AWESOME! Fingers Crossed!!
Okay, sooooo I'm not really sure what to say about this book... It was absomalutely amazing to get pulled into the world of Carthya once more and read about some of my favorite characters ever! *sighs happily*
A great end to the series (WAIT...I don't want it to be done yet...😭), although it did get a bit confusing at times and I think the ending could have been a bit more satisfying. *shrugs* Maybe it's just me.
I'LL MISS YOU GUYS. *standing ovation as the curtain closes*
Don't keep reading, unless you've already read the book! ... ...(review below) ... ... ... ...(almost there) ... ... ...(have to make sure no one will see this by accident.) ... ... ... ...(okay, I'm done!) :) ... ... No seriously, I'm done ;) ... ...
Wow, wow, and just wow!! I wish I could be able to give this book ten out of ten stars!! Ms. Nielsen really outdid herself with this book; it's in my opinion, the best one. The ending was so perfect and OH MY GOODNESS THERE WERE SO MANY AWESOME LINES!! (I don't even know where to begin; so I'll just leave it at that, or we'd be here all day reading them). XD
I loved Jaron's and Imogen's character arcs. It was so amazing. In this book, you do see other characters from the series, but this book focused more on growing Imogen's and Jaron's relationship (as the fourth book left me somewhat unsatisfied on where the author left their relationship. I felt like there was so much room for growth and change.) Here, it's beautifully woven together.
I loved seeing Imogen grow and become a strong leader like Jaron (she's like his rock). And Jaron finally stops hiding from his past and faces it head on and reconciles all his past mistakes (after all, his trickery, snarkiness, and quick wit could only carry him so far. Although, I still enjoyed his quips and sass. I couldn't stop laughing!) And of course, Ms. Nielsen threw in some amazing plot twists as usual (can't have a story with Jaron and not include awesome plot twists!)
We read this book aloud during our family reading time, and some tears were shed because this was the last book. But the ending was handle so well. It wasn't rushed; everything came to completion.
Well done to Ms. Nielsen; this has been such an amazing journey with Jaron. A definite book to read!
Finally the book is out and I just finished reading it. It exceeded all my expectations and absolutely blew my mind!! 🤯😮😍
Very highly recommended ;)
28th Jan 2021
So we finally have a cover and description to hold onto until the book publishes. (Exhales and smiles) In these new books Jaron is becoming more real. More of a person than a fantasy of some omnipotent charming prince. And I am loving it. While I loved to hold onto the ephemeral and evasive role model of Sage the roguish prince , and later Jaron the Ascendance King , who is undefeated, always has something to say and can get out of any situation unscathed(well ,almost unscathed) . These new books make him more tangible, more real. He is no more just a dream of some one I might aspire to be like but someone more. Something better for sure. Someone more relatable. Someone I could in fact hope to emulate in some ways , someday.
Waiting in anticipation for its release :)
27th October 2020
I'm still reeling from the after effects of the previous book.
How am I to survive such a wait of unknown time period ?????
And why is there no description yet. Please give me something to hold onto. Honestly I think the description would only stroke the flame of my curiosity yet I would take anything I can get at this point.
I need more of Jaron and his world. PLEASE COME SOON !!!
The 1st three books had been published in a one book per year style. Hopefully the next books will come along the same way.
Again, failed to capture what I believe is the essence of Jaron but what can you do. Also the ending wasn't satisfying. There are a lot of things that went unresolved. It could have been so much better. Or it would have been better if this book and The Captive Kingdom were never written at all. I didn't need them, the series was complete with the first three books.
Yep. I now declare The Shattered Castle to be the most enjoyable book of the entire Ascendance Series. Of course, it wouldn't have been needed except for book four being written; but book five definitely redeems the not-so-good elements of The Captive Kingdom. I loved how the plot of The Shattered Castle lifts off right away. There's always continuous action and excitement.
The characters? Yes! ☺️ Jaron finally gets some much needed development. He begins to see how his actions and words have consequences and recognizes this several times throughout the story. Mott, Imogen, Rodon, Tobias, Amarinda (did I forget anyone? 🤔) — I'm sad to leave them now, but I had so much fun going on these adventures with them all. And I promise this is the last time I'll mention this: Fink takes the place as the best minor character! Just gotta love him. 😄
I could say a lot more, but reading the books would be the better option. 😉 The Ascendance Series is a great fantasy Series that awaits your arrival. So apparently this is the end of the entire series... and the end of my review. *waves goodbye to Carthya, turns to look at bookshelf, and stares with excitement at all the many more adventures waiting to be discovered — all within the pages of a book*
📊 A Quick Overview 📊
👍🏼 What I Liked: • The plot — takes off from the very beginning and never lets you take a break. • The main characters — they're all so wonderfully developed. • The minor characters — each one had distinct personality. • The ending — builds even further upon the ending of The Shadow Throne.
👎🏼 What I Did Not Like: • The plot is a bit predictable because it's based on the ending of The Shadow Throne, so it sorta tones down the suspense.
📚📚📚📚📚📚📚📚📚📚📚📚📚📚📚📚📚📚
📖 BOOK BREAKDOWN 📖 (Overall: 4.5/5 [rounded down to 4 on Goodreads]) ~Fundamentals: (1=worst; 5=best) — 📈 Plot: 4.5/5 — 📝 Writing: 4/5 — 👥 Characters: 4/5
~Content: (0=none; 1=least; 5=most)
— 🤬 Language: 0/5
• (As I mentioned for other books in this series, there are several times where the characters are mentioned as cursing [no curse words uses].)
A softness warmed her smile. “Your body takes beatings and rises again and again. “Your mind brushes away insults like they are harmless flies.” She took my hand. “But your heart is different. It bruises deeply and is slow to heal.”
“Go back to the stables and leave. That is the order of your king.”
“Maybe, but I have orders from my queen.” Fink winked at me. “She’s nicer then you are.”
Tobias’s eyes filled with tears. “Then you have doomed us all.”
alright... here come the wAtEr WoRkEs *stream of tears roll down my face* 😭😭🥺🥺❤️❤️
This book!!! So so so so so good!! JENNIFER!!! My heart *clutches heart* *falls to floor* I can’t believe this is the last book! (Can I have a sixth book?!?! I DONT WANT THIS SERIES TO EVER END!!!)
The Captive Kingdom Darius, I still love him. But The Shattered Castle Darius!!!!! 🤯🤯🤯🤯 TALK ABOUT CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I’m a little upset that Jaron and Imogen never kissed and it took a little longer then I would have liked (in my opinion) for them to make up. (And I wished they would’ve gotten married a little earlier)And they FINALLY got married (in the LaSt cHaPtEr!!!) but yes, those are my ONLY complaints.
Great Job Jennifer! (Can I have a spin off series with fink being the main character?!?!).
Okay to be completely honest I think this series should’ve just been a trilogy. Book four was good but this one just didn’t do it for me. I skimmed most of it tbh. This wasn’t Jennifer’s best book. 😕
As with Book 4, Book 5 reminds us that this story was never meant to be more than a trilogy.
It would have benefitted from a second or third person POV because Jaron spends a ridiculous amount of time sneaking around just so he can happen upon characters talking about important story elements. It's all very convenient, which made it boring.
Jaron didn't really do anything that we're used to seeing from him in this story and didn't grow as a character at all. He's not forced to change or adapt in any meaningful way for any reason at all, so I'm not sure what I was supposed to care about. He figured out early on that Imogen's actions were for the good of Carthya and us readers already know they end up together (Book 3 tells us they get married). There wasn't any 'will they/won't they' tension in that storyline, or at best, it was watered down. He felt like a side character we were forced to follow around.
And there wasn't much tension elsewhere. I don't believe the Devil's scope or the treasure storylines were built up to be a life changing true threat that would finally defeat the mighty Kind Jaron. It didn't seem clear what was going on because, again, we only got this information when Jaron happened to be close by.
And don't get me started on how stupid the antagonists are. Jaron's reputation is so widely known, that every stranger he comes in contact with mentions what a little terror he is, and yet, the antagonists don't kill him when they have a chance. They have him in the dungeon, planning to get rid of him, have this whole plan to take over the kingdom, yet they don't just drive a sword through him right then and there?? Ugh, it's just frustrating.
In the end, it was a tedious read for me. It felt like things were kept secret solely so the story could happen and not because of character actions/inaction. It felt like a lot of waiting around for the inevitable end. And thank goodness, it's finally over!
I was so excited at how quickly our library purchased this book and it does not disappoint. It was a great end to the whole series and while I am sad to see Jaron go, I do think it is a good time for him to retire. My one disappointment with the whole series is Jaron. After the first book he just got kinda annoying and stuck up which is not how I would have pictured the 'street king'. I was happy to see how he kinda changed in the end and he gained back some of my respect.
I'M CRYING. (Actually, I'm not, but I am sad that I'm done this series.) BUT THIS WAS SO AMAZING!!! It was so full of action, clever plans, secrets, and just...AMAZINGNESS. It was such a perfect conclusion to the series. Everything was just so perfectly resolved. I really don't know what else to say other than it was amazing and I loved it, but I am sad to finish this series like nooooo. And the ending was so cute. Jaron and all the other characters are perfect. I'd love to just go live in the Castle with all of them. IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THIS SERIES YET, QUIT YER SLACKIN' AND READ IT!! IT'S AMAZINGGGG!!!! Imma just leave ya'll with this quote from toward the end:
"But then I was at the base of the steps, staring up at Imogen. I opened my mouth, but no words came out. 'What happened to you?' she asked. I smiled. 'I was nearly blown up, jumped through a waterfall, and Darius rides his horse like an old man, but I'm better now and you look beautiful. Will you marry me, Imogen?'"
I liked this book a lot, and I’m sad that this is the end of the great Ascendance series. I liked how at the start, Wilma’s rashes and her mention of Captain Strick feeding her led up to the point where Tobias figured out that Captain Strick had been poisoning her own daughter through her food. I also liked how Jaron found the book of knowledge and gave it to Levitimas, keeping his promise. Another thing that I liked about this book was that Imogen had to marry Castor to finally take control of his stewardmen and defeat him in the end. As always, I love how Jaron always plans ahead and can get out of tight situations easily. I enjoyed this book overall.
WHY CAN’T THIS JUST GO ON FOREVERRRR. Goodness was that a good book though! I’m gonna miss Jaron’s character so much!! I don’t think I’ve ever read a book with such good character development and that made it so much more enjoyable
I loved this book. After so many months and months, it was enjoyable to read about Jaron and his friends again in this fifth book. As per usual, trouble is always following Jaron and he never seems to be able to escape it. While there were lots of physical battles, I think the biggest one he dealt with in this book was his love for Imogen. It's crazy to see him all so grown up since book one so he has a special place in my heart.
"Fear of a leader may be the most powerful reason to betray a leader."
"You don't need to ask my forgiveness. You have earned it with every scar you have."
I've been waiting for this book for ages and was not disappointed! While not as good as the first three I still loved the story and was caught be ever twist and turn!! Nielsen is an amazing author!!!
Things I liked:
My favourite thing was how we got to see more of Imogen and who she is become and can I just say....this girl is a savage (which I love). She's smart, strong-willed, and a true royal.❤️ Love ya girl!
Obviously I also love Jaron. Ahhh this boy...this boy...he's so cocky, calculated and hilarious. I can't live without him❤️
I'm also super happy with the ending! They deserve it.
Things I didn't like:
That their world is fictional 😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️
But a surprise attack on his own land -- on the castle itself -- reminds Jaron that nothing is easy. The Prozarian Monarch threatens to crumble Jaron's entire kingdom. And that's not the only thing in danger: With old enemies and new rumors circling around him, even Jaron's relationship with Imogen is uncertain.
This former False Prince will need his best tricks and many allies at his side to hold Carthya together."
At all times he has served you, sacrificed for you, and risked his life for the lives you have. [...] We will not accept these invaders; we will not kneel to the Prazarian Monarchy. We will not pay a single coin of tribute, not while I'm queen. Carthyans an army is on its way here. If you can fight, I call you to fight!'"
