Between Each Step: A Married Couple's Thru Hike on New Zealand's Te Araroa

Rate this book
Shedding years of societal conditioning that dictates school, work and life, Patrice and Justin La Vigne do their best to maintain a nomadic whimsy. However, this nontraditional life presents just as many moments of joy and grace as moments of stress and hardship. It's in the rawness of long-distance hiking that the couple builds confidence to continue their "life less ordinary."

In 2014-15, Patrice and Justin opted for the human-powered route to explore New Zealand. For four months, they tramped along Te Araroa, a continuous trail gaining notoriety stretching roughly 2,000 miles from Cape Reinga at the top of the North Island to Bluff at the bottom of the South Island. The adventure would either strengthen their bond to each other and their commitment to a nontraditional life, or it would break them apart.

This travel memoir powerfully captures the essence of trail life, New Zealand's unique culture and the tradeoffs to an off-the-beaten path trajectory. Told with suspense, style and humor, backpackers and armchair adventurers alike will learn that this newly created trail in an exotic locale is sometimes zany, but the healthy vulnerability to its rugged nature rewards self-awareness and growth. Readers will feel the pain of every blister, experience the fear of life-threatening tides and be blown away by the hospitality of the Kiwi people, all at the same time.

I traveled to New Zealand a couple of years ago and Patrice does a wonderful job capturing the Kiwi culture and diverse scenery. This is not a glamorous tale of a thru-hike: readers will learn exactly what it takes to complete a 2,000+ mile trail, and Te Araroa is one of the most challenging around.

I really appreciated Patrice's honest retelling of her marriage on this trail. It's obvious that she and Justin have a strong relationship built on shared dreams and values, but even our favorite person in the world can get on our nerves sometimes. With too many portrayals of "perfect" relationships on social media and in pop culture, I was thankful to remember that no relationship is perfect 100% of the time. Love takes trust, compromise, forgiveness, and understanding, whether you're settled at home or on Day 121 of a trail hike. Thank you for sharing your story, Patrice!!

Now I want to go to New Zealand!! A vivid travel memoir that lets the reader experience the thrills and hardships of hiking through a difficult but beautiful terrain. Part travel guide, part memoir that explores Patrice and Justin La Vigne’s relationship and nomadic lifestyle, this was the perfect book to read while sheltering-in-place. I felt like I was traveling alongside them, and it truly whetted my appetite for a hiking adventure, something I had never considered before. Well-written and a joy to read.

Between Each Step was such a fun read from cover to cover! Patrice tells the story of her and Justin’s through hike of Te Araroa in such a way that it’s gripping, raw, and humorous - you won’t want to put the book down! While I’ve never done a through hike myself, Patrice’s narrative made me feel like I was along every step of the way, not to mention it is often downright laugh out loud funny. I found myself sad when the book was over, but can’t wait to recommend it to my outdoorsy and adventure-loving friends.

Between Each Step will hold a permanent place on my bookshelf, and I truly believe it should on yours as well!

I've been reading a lot of adventure books lately in order to do a bit of "arm chair traveling" -- And this travel memoir made me so jealous! I've always wanted to visit New Zealand and I've always wanted to go on an epic, long-distance backpacking trip.

Unlike other travel memoirs, this one doesn't venture too far away from the central story, which makes it a good choice if you're looking for a traditional travel narrative. There's no melodrama or navel gazing. It takes a more journalistic approach.

I recommend it for anyone who enjoys hiking or backpacking or for anyone planning a trip to New Zealand. Even if you have no desire to hike while in NZ, the book provides interesting details about the culture and landscape.

Patrice takes readers on a wonderful tour of this still very new long trail, in a far off country that literally served as the backdrop for epic fantasy. Her descriptions of the trials and suffering that accompany any thru-hike are wonderfully offset by the lively pace and tone of the book, and she does an excellent job balancing straightforward trail journaling with insightful (but not preachy) commentary on hiking, partnership, struggle, and the choice to pursue "a life less ordinary."

I loved this book! After following Patrice's blog for years, I was excited to see this book published. I'm not an outdoor enthusiast, but I love reading about adventures.

I was hooked from the first page, and really enjoyed reading about the details of the ups and downs of their Te Araroa through-hike.

I also learned many new things about New Zealand in general. Who knew that possums have taken over the country? Or that they have a zillion varieties of ferns? And, how about that Kiwi hospitality? I don't think I know a single person who would pick up a hitchhiker in America. Let alone welcome them into their homes.

I was also blown away by all of the different weather and terrain that Patrice and Justin had to hike through. As Patrice mentions, the mental strength needed to overcome some of the trail hardships often needs to be stronger than physical strength.

Fantastic book--highly recommend!

What an EPIC adventure! Patrice and her husband, Justin, suffer extreme temperatures and terrain as they hike from one end of New Zealand to the other. The physical toll of the trip is so much more than I would have expected and the determination of these two to complete the giant task speaks volumes to their passion for their nomadic lifestyle choices. I can't imagine taking this kind of "vacation" but if I did I would want Patrice and Justin there as their expertise in back-country journeys would be an incomparable asset to the trip! The writing style is casual but very properly executed and I was so impressed with the dabs of humor, sadness, surprise and delight as I made the journey with them (figuratively, of course!). It's easy to see that they are a couple that would be awesome to meet up with on a trail such as this, for a moment, an hour or several days. I have to say that I was a bit sad when the book ended but I'm glad to know there's another one that I can take up to continue my trekking with this author and her husband.

This is one of the best-written adventure memoirs I've read. Patrice has a very immersive writing style that lends itself toward making the book very accessible and entertaining to hikers and non-hikers alike. Her strong heart shows, and is an inspiration. Highly reccomend this book to all.

I loved this book! It is a whirlwind tour of New Zealand through the eyes of an adventurous American, not along the typical touristy route but on a beautiful, relentless, sometimes-harrowing 2000+ mile trail that runs the length of the country. I’m a little biased--since studying abroad in NZ in college, I have been enchanted with the place and people. It’s where I learned to love the mountains.

Patrice’s descriptions are so vivid that I felt like I was back on the scree slopes snd ridiculously steep forests of the South Island, drinking in views of peaks, fjords, and wild coast that didn’t even seem real to a kid from Pennsylvania. Her writing matches the beauty of the land - it's not just "the first sunny day in awhile" but ... "after ten sunless days, the daffodil-colored ball peaks through grey comforters in the sky..." Describing the South Island geology, she writes "The mix of crystals, rocks and minerals sends cinnamon spires vaulting skyward." Oh, and this one gave me chills. As she lay in her bunk in one of the backcountry huts, "my forehead is tickled by something furry running across."

Despite the fast-flowing narrative of the trek, she also captures the other parts of NZ life, the friendly Kiwis who run around barefoot, pick you up on the side of the road, and say things like "ta," "cheers," and “good on ya.” The story encompasses so much of what I love about travel, wilderness, and meeting new people, all while asking the probing question of why we are compelled to do hard things and what it teaches us about ourselves.

Buy it! Read it! Share it!

Patrice writing has made this book a enjoyable experience. I like reading about all the people she and husband met on the trial. Reading about New Zealand 🇳🇿 culture and the kiwi people showed me that enjoy the little things in life and people are kind to strangers. I also like Patrice added everything like the funny, scary moments on the trial; she showed what it is exactly like hiking. Now I want to go on Te Araroa. I recommend this book to any hiker and non hiker. You won’t be disappointed with this book.
Lastly, one funny thing this book taught me was that I been spelling New Zealand wrong my whole life!!! Why no told me their were two a’s!! 😂

I've read dozens and dozens of books about long-distance hiking and this is my absolute favorite! Between Each Step is extremely well-written and entertaining - I definitely laughed out loud regularly. The story keeps a good pace and there's a great balance of travel info, open and honest glimpses into the author's relationship with her husband, and humor. Their hike is just as inspiring as their life and I loved following not only the twists and turns on this INSANE trail, but also in their personal lives. Great read for any hiker, adventurer, traveler (armchair or otherwise) or really anyone who just wants to be motivated to get outside.

Wonderful book! I wasn't very far into the book when I came to the conclusion that you two are crazy...amazing, but crazy...in a good way of course. After all, blisters, hives, speckled mass of welts, eels, charging horses and that was even before you were sleeping with mice and seeing the warnings about getting amoebic meningitis. What a journey, what an experience and what an accomplishment. Thank you for writing this. For those of us not living the "life less ordinary" bless you for letting us experience this from our living rooms with a cup of coffee in the mornings and a glass of wine in the evenings. Can't wait for the next book about your "life less ordinary."

A Modern Love Story

This book is an absolute pleasure in many ways. Patrice’s style makes it an easy read no matter what your involvement is in the thru-hiking world. Even if you’re an urban park walker, her vivid verbal imagery makes it fun reading no matter who picks it up, I dare you not to read it all the way through.

The story is really three stories woven into a great tale. It is obviously about the great New Zealand thru-trail called the Te Araroa, running across the whole of both of New Zealand’s islands. The trail totals some 2000 miles of mountains, forests, rivers, beaches and most importantly people. The extremes of all the natural features of New Zealand are on full display in Patrice’s descriptions. The bugs, the mud, the ferns, the rivers, the mountains, the fences, the livestock, all of it is laid out for you to appreciate as you turn the pages.

Anyone on any thru-hike picks up trail family and Patrice and husband Justin were no different. The variety of personalities and idiosyncrasies of each new member of the group makes for great insight into the human side of the trekking experience and great reading. Their part-time companions were from around the world and of all ages. Of course the people of New Zealand who were just living in their country, cities and backyards added even more to the tale. The book chronicles people willing to let total strangers who just happen to be trampling across their country sleep on their front yards or provide a them lift or boat ride around various obstacles. The book is an unending series of great vignettes of the human experience.

And the most endearing part is the story of a modern couple doing things their way. As they describe it, “a life less ordinary”. The book is a love story of a fun loving, adventurous couple we should all aspire to emulate in our “more ordinary lives”.

Despite Americans never pronouncing New Zealand’s Te Araroa Trail correctly (myself included), many hikers are intrigued by the idea of getting acquainted with Kiwi culture while “tramping” it. To my knowledge, this is the only hiking memoir about this trail. Even if there are others, it’s hard to imagine they’d entertain me as much as Patrice Lavigne’s account.

She and her husband, Justin, thru hiked the entire 3000-kilometer 1900 miles trail when it was relatively new. Patrice is a seasoned freelance writer and a fantastic storyteller. I loved learning terms like streaky bacon and metal roads. I also enjoyed reading about the dynamics of a husband and wife thru hike since it’s something I’ll probably do with my husband in a few years. It was refreshing to learn that it’s possible to be cut from an entirely different cloth from your spouse and still like each other by the end of a long walk.

I’m still mulling over a looming question after reading this book though: did it make me want to hike the Te Araroa more or less than before I read it? Patrice paints a vivid enough picture that I was a bit intimidated by some of the terrain they traversed. Yet, she also writes of breathtaking beauty and some of the most warm and welcoming people on the planet.

My grandparents were avid world travelers and loved sharing slide shows with our family upon their return home (yep, we were that family). Interestingly, their photos from New Zealand are still vivid in my mind over four decades later. I love a grueling adventure that pushes me out of my comfort zone….and something about those photos must have resonated with me. Maybe I know my answer after all. But even if I never hike the Te Araroa, I thoroughly enjoyed living vicariously through the Patrice’s journey.

This book does a great job of describing the ups and downs of a long walk of a month or more. It also creates a realistic and interesting way of walking specifically through New Zealand. "Between Each Step" is an easy and joyful read and one of the best trail memoirs I have read. Add a few more trips to a fish and chips shop or a bakery for delicious pies and remove trips to McDonald's then it would represent my perfect tramp through NZ. If you are interested in long-distance hiking or traveling in New Zealand this is a great book.

I LOVED READING THIS BOOK!!!
I’ve never been able to hike like Patrice and Justin have but I love the outdoors and breathless scenery so I was especially grateful to “tag along” from home!
Patrice’s vivid descriptions of glacier-fed lakes, snow-capped mountain ranges, mud, mouse-y huts, and streaky bacon helped me “see” and “feel” their New Zealand experience.
She wove scintillating details about their 2,000 mile hike with tales of new friendships; Maori and New Zealand history and cultures; panoramas that I will never get to see in person; and 4 months of joys, frustrations, blisters and celebrations - including champagne!
I have NO IDEA how Justin managed this trek while dealing with Crohn’s disease. What a dedicated trouper!
There are even a few location references to the Lord of the Rings series.
I highly recommend that you put on your most comfortable shoes and begin your hike with Patrice and Justin on page 1.
Between Each Step is an unforgettable read and was a wonderful gift!

Every person who embarks on a long distance hike goes through a variety of physical and mental challenges and changes. Patrice has done a fantastic job showcasing this with her memoir of her and Justin's hike of the Te Araroa in New Zealand. I loved the depth that she gets into on some of the emotions that a couple can go through during a hike of this magnitude, and how the dynamics of a Trail Family can play into life on the trail. I laughed and nodded my head along with so many of their stories along the way, re-living the same feelings I felt on my own thru-hikes.

The stellar writing in the book will set this trail memoir apart from so many others out there! And it will have you wanting to head down to New Zealand as soon a possible to trek along the Te Araroa.

What a wonderful read, especially in a year when international travel was out of our reach. Patrice's words brought to life the travels they went through and also brought back lovely memories of my husband's and my travels through New Zealand years ago.

One can learn so much through travel and it is so much more than the destination and this amazing work of art takes you into a world of adventure with an appreciation of what it takes and what one can gain from an adventure!

Pick this book up and be ready to not want to put it down.

Patrice does a lovely job of recounting her time with her husband on the Te Araroa Trail-- a relatively new trail in New Zealand. There isn't much written about the trail, and this book provides an excellent description of the terrain, the challenges, and the beauty of New Zealander culture that they experienced along the way.

This book is sweet as! I brought it with me on a kayak camping trip, and after getting stuck in my tent due to bad weather, I had the pleasure of adventuring vicariously through Patrice's delightful storytelling instead. I was genuinely disappointed when the sun came out and I had to put it down to go paddling again. Experienced backpackers, outdoor enthusiasts, and armchair adventurers alike will all enjoy her honest and humorous account of life on the trail, New Zealand and its culture, and the warm generosity of the Kiwis they met along the way.

I really enjoyed reading "Between Each Step" as the author's writing made me feel like I was on New Zealand's Te Araroa trail with her, her husband, and the perfect cast of characters they met along the way. Having visited New Zealand before, I was able to relate and remember many of the areas Patrice writes about in addition to learning many new places and information about the country and thru-hiking. This is a book about resilience and demonstrates exactly how the couple lives by their motto to live a "life less ordinary." I highly recommend this book!!

This is my fourth memoir of an experience completing a long-distance hike. Patrice clearly captured the challenges and hardships of this type of adventure. Her narration and honesty of the journey had me hooked on reading. I am fascinated by the idea of this type of experience and finally felt I understood the draw of backpacking for months on end. It was the first time I wondered if I could or wanted try a week on a trail. Thanks for sharing your account of trekking across New Zealand.
