People always seem to talk about fate like a benevolent, guiding force that one can put their trust in. Those people clearly haven’t been dragged through multiple lives without a choice. Fate is the reason Lux finds himself in the back of a prisoner wagon, after being forced to choose between Lia’s life or his freedom. Destined for the capital city Yoria and a trial before the King, Lux is ready for his life to be thrown back into turmoil once again. But fate, as always, has other plans for him.
This second instalment in the Restart Again series was not quite as enjoyable as the first instalment. The premise of this portal fantasy/isekai remains fun with our lead character, Lux, not being your typical type of lead character thanks to the fact that his patience is wearing thin on the idea of being dragged from world to world now that he is on his 4th life with no idea why it is happening to him and with memories of all the folks he misses from his old lives!
The first book was very much a slow paced slice of life type of story but this second book tried to pivot towards a bit of quest action. It ended up being a weakness for the book! Sure we got some plot and story momentum but the quest and action were a bit dull and uninspiring. Turns out I actually prefer the slice of life stuff even if it can feel like absolutely nothing is happening in the story except characters chit chatting and travelling!
This story in this one focused on Lux and Lia being dragged before the King of Yoria and being forced into going on a quest to a neighbouring kingdom where reports of uprising and strange creatures were emerging. It ended up being a bit…meh.
As always this series works better for the reader if you imagine it as a crazy anime style story rather than trying for any sort of realism because the character interactions and dialogue are decidedly more anime in tone and feel than realistic. That said, it is worth noting the story can still get a touch dark at times.
Another thing worth noting is the fact this series is basically just one long serial with no clear break points. Which is to say both books in this series have ended with cliffhangers.
All in all this was an adequate read. Started OK but definitely ended a bit dull as we got bogged down in the action/plot. I’ll press on to the next book and see if the story can get back to what made it fun in the first instalment.
Rating: 2.5 stars. I’ll round up to three stars.
Audio Note: Alex Knox gave a pretty solid performance of the audio.
Better than the first book, but still not great. This one actually has a point. There is actually something that the characters are working toward. That's more than I can say for the first book. BUT since I received both as gifts, I was kind of obligated to read them. Now I can forget this series exists. It's not hard. These are very, VERY forgettable books.
So when I read the first books description I was hooked... I mean the story was so different from what I'd come to know of reincarnated story's (or for the fellow weebs isekai) that I've read so I decided to read this and lets just say I had started to get scared of about 20 pages from the end of this book that this series would end here...then read the last page and have to say I loved the ending so much I had to reread it a couple of times just because to me it was that good...then got to the authors note and saw him say it took 8 months in between and that he was sorry for it being later than the 6 months...now idk about anyone else but if you can get a book series like this in 8 months idc if its off by a few months I'd still be waiting with the excitement that I have now for the next book so dude keep it up XD
F-ing cliff-hanger ending from hell! If anyone wants a textbook example of how NOT to end a book unless the sequel is already in the can, this is it.
That said, the story continues, and some of Lux's certainties are tested. Can't say much more without spoilers, but it deserves the 4 I gave it. If you liked the first one, I'd suggest waiting until book 3 is out before tackling this one, but that depends on how much of a masochist you are.
Been really enjoying this series, and would like to see a few more art pieces as mentioned at the end :) Speaking of the end, that cliff hanger! :'( Really interested in the true depth of our MCs power and his potential to control it better in the future. Would also like to see the initimacy get a bit deeper, as close as they are it has been quite uninvolved. Hoping future worlds come into play as well, new threats and stories across time and space, presuming it can be done without crippling our MC abilities and still finding engaging enemies.
Mistakes: I didn't find anything wrong with this book. Except the cliffhanger ending.
Plot: Much more is going on in this book then in book one. We have training, plenty of fighting, a couple of flashbacks, but not near as many as book one. And a love interest.
Characters: They where more fun to follow in this book since there was more going on.
7/10 I took an entire star and a half away for the cliffhanger.
I chose this rating because the book had a completely new twist to a fantasy novel. The character is tortured and powerful saved yet Damned friend yet foe it had everything in fantasy can you eat magic intrigued turmoil happiness sadness was a great book I can't wait to read the next one
A really good second book in the series. Great plot twists and turns, with no plot lines dropped! I was glad to see that the missed plot line of Lux learning to read was picked up, though if you zoned out a little you would miss it. (Smile). I enjoyed the story and am off to read book 3
This book is a very good way to spend some time and enjoy it. I have been anxiously waiting for this sequel since I read the first book. I honestly loved it! Except for the cliffhanger...
Fully enjoyed reading the second installment of the series and found it with plenty of background and experiences. Characters were well developed and plenty of excitement to keep you on edge.
I would seriously recommend this book to anyone who is only even slightly interested in the concept of isekai. It's such an amazing take on an overused trope. I love it all.
And so the story continues as the title it gets better lux and lia and val journey happens to contain fighting lots of unanswered questions and a great cliffhanger read the book to find out more.
Terrible ending in cliffhanger, but otherwise a very interesting entertaining story story nonetheless. A guy is sent to different worlds to fight world threats.
