About the author

William James Durant was a prolific American writer, historian, and philosopher. He is best known for the 11-volume The Story of Civilization, written in collaboration with his wife Ariel and published between 1935 and 1975. He was earlier noted for his book, The Story of Philosophy, written in 1926, which was considered "a groundbreaking work that helped to popularize philosophy."

They were awarded the Pulitzer Prize for literature in 1967 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977.

This was a long postponed book as I always thought it would be a long and trudging read, hard to comprehend and harder to remember afterwards. But Durant's treatment of the philosophers and their ideas as organic evolutions of their character and their times was what made the book a joy to read.

The ideas and the long dead philosophers come alive magnificently in these pages and Durant even manages to fill one with the thirst to go ahead and read all these works that are compressed and presented here.

This is one of those books which takes a long time to read not because they are long and arduous but because you end up spending more time thinking about each section than in the reading. The best part of the book was the fact that wherever possible the ideas are put forth in the philosopher's own words without commentary or interpretation marring the expostulation.

With the right mix of history, biography and philosophy, Durant has achieved a wonderful synthesis and summary of the evolution of thought. It leaves one with a tantalizing glimpse of great minds and a partial open door through which is too filled with riches to be left unexplored.

This is the most sensitive look at philosophy I've ever read. Will Durant is brilliant-- and who wasn't touched by his heartfelt dedication to his wife at the beginning? I think what really set this book apart is Durant's inclusion of just enough biographical information of the philosophers to remind you that they were just people like you and me who happened to think deep, amazing things about life and were deeply affected by their own childhoods and personal lives, i.e. Nietzsche and his less than sparkling love-life! This is the book that made me fall in love with philosophy. I consider this to be in my top 5 favorite books of all time. One problem, however... slight as it may be... When I first read this book, i had borrowed it from my library and I remember that it was such a beautiful hard-cover edition with an elegant binding that made the pages uneven but gorgeous. Even the pages themselves had a lovely, aged feel to them due to their thickness. Looking back, I realize that instead of checking it out 11 times that year, I should have just stolen it (yes! i admit it!) because now all I own is a simple paperback copy that pales in resemblance. The story inside dazzles your mind, but how i miss the edition that felt so good to hold.

This is quite a conservative history of philosophy. As such I would probably recommend Russell’s work over this one – but this has the advantage of being shorter, and that’s quite an advantage. There are main chapters on a series of ‘key’ philosophers – Plato, Aristotle, Bacon, Spinoza, Voltaire, Kant, Schopenhauer, Spencer, Nietzsche – and some shorter chapters on Bergson, Croce, Russell, Santayana, James and Dewey. Along the way he also mentions Comte, Hegel, Locke, Rousseau and Hume. Of the main chapters, about fifty pages are dedicated to the key philosophers I've listed. This is interesting as it generally starts with their ‘life’ and then moves onto their ‘ideas’ and ends with a criticism – although, often these are rather glowing. There are a few nice jokes along the way – my favourite being about Santayana (someone I knew virtually nothing of before reading this) and his version of atheistic Catholicism (for want of a better term) that he would like to see Europe remain Catholic long after it had given up Christianity – and a wit who said, “God doesn’t exist and Mary is His mother”.

One of the underlying themes here is that Plato was right that the best form of society is an aristocracy. We need to be ruled by the best people. Well, this is hardly contentious in one sense – better to be ruled by the best of people than the worst – but how we are to go about choosing these best of people is where the problems tend to arise. If at all possible I think I would rather pass on the Nietzschean artist/war-lord/herd’s man/superman.

The interesting thing about this book is that he feels epistemology (the theory of how we know stuff) has troubled philosophy for far too long and that he felt the time was fast approaching when philosophy would get over epistemology and go back to more worthwhile questions – particularly to do with how to live a good life – ethics.

His explanations are always clear and generally also insightful. He essentially weaves his way through his explanations using the philosopher’s own words and drawing together their thinking in ways that clarify what they had to say – this is particularly evident with Nietzsche, who does tend to be a bit all over the place.

Still, as I said, this is a very conservative collection. Hegel gets seven pages and his lack of influence on James is highlighted, but not his very strong influence on Dewey. Dewey gets half the mention of James who gets about half the mention of Santayana, in virtually inverse relation to any current valuation of their worth, I would suspect. I also found it interesting that some philosophers were even selected (not sure I would have picked Voltaire in my top ten philosophers for an extended discussion). Books that have extensive chapters on Schopenhauer and Nietzsche (like The Consolations of Philosophy say) do tend to be more conservative – and, to be honest, I did find myself getting a bit bored hearing their views rehearsed yet again. I felt he was kinder to both of these philosophers than he was to Kant – but I also think Kant’s contribution to philosophy so greatly outweighs either of their's that this would have to be seen as an odd valuation to say the least.

I am going to have to spend some time reading Spinoza, but I’ve no idea just when I’ll get time to read him the requisite two to three times. Still, he does sound particularly interesting and I have been meaning to read his Ethics for years – I even have it on my bookshelf waiting, always waiting… It's a good thing Spinoza is so patient.

This wasn’t a terrible overview of the history of Philosophy – but I guess it could more accurately have been called, “Some of My Favourite Philosophers” – if you know what I mean.

از خصوصيات ويل دورانت، چه اينجا و چه در تاريخ تمدن، نثر ساده و همه فهم اوست كه گهگاه چاشنى طنازى هم به آن مى افزايد.
نيز، هميشه در چنته ى خود مقدار زيادى اطلاعات رنگارنگ و جالب تاريخى دارد كه به مناسبت، رويشان مى كند و خواننده را هر چه بيشتر پاى نوشته اش ميخكوب مى كند.

نكات منفى
از دو جهت کتاب تصویر بسیار ناقصی از تاریخ فلسفه به دست می دهد، از این جهت ابداً به عنوان نخستین کتاب برای آشنایی با فلسفه ی غرب پیشنهاد نمی شود.

نخست این که از نظریات یک فیلسوف، تنها به بخش دلخواهش پرداخته و از سایر بخش ها به راحتی چشم پوشی کرده است. البته گاهی، این بخش دلخواه همان نظریه ی اصلی فیلسوف است، اما در مواردی این بخش دلخواه بخشی بی اهمیت یا کم اهمیت از نظریات فیلسوف است. در نتیجه، نظریه ی اصلی فیلسوف ناگفته مانده است. مثلاً در افلاطون به جای پرداختن به نظریه ی مُثُل، به فلسفه ی سیاسی پرداخته، یا در ارسطو به اخلاق.

دوم این که از میان سلسله ی فلاسفه ی تأثیرگذار، عده ای را انتخاب کرده و از عده ی دیگر اسمی نیاورده یا خیلی کوتاه در عرض یک یا دو صفحه توضیحشان داده. در نتیجه، کتاب ارتباط زیبا و زنجیرواری که بین تفکرات فلاسفه بوده را نشان نمی دهد. این که چطور حرکتی که دکارت آغاز کرد در انگلستان به بارکلی رسید و با هیوم اوج گرفت و توسط کانت تعدیل شد.
این رقص هماهنگ فلاسفه در کتاب مغفول مانده و به جایش، به صورت جزیره جزیره، تکه های پراکنده ای از تاریخ فلسفه آورده شده که خواننده ی ناآشنا را بیشتر گیج می کند تا تصویری جامع ارائه دهد.

هذا ملخص كتبته في عام ٢٠١٢ وأنا مستقل القطار من بودابست متوجها إلى فيينا،وفي تلك اللحظات الجميلة كنت مستحضرا قربي من مهد الفلسفة في العالم والتي ولدت بذرتها في بلاد اليونان ومستحضرا بعض الكتب الفلسفية التي قرأتها في نفس الموضوع ،فهذا السِفر الفلسفي لا يستغني عن الإطلاع عليه من أراد جس بعض أبواب الفلسفة الإنسانية.

قد يؤخذ على المؤلف إهماله ذكر الفلسفة الإسلامية والتي كانت الوسيط الذي اطلعت أوروبا فيه على تراث أجدادها الإغريق ، وقد يكون ذلك راجعا لسببين أولهما أن ديورانت يرى أن الفلسفة الإسلامية لم تضف شيئا للفلسفة الإنسانية فلقد كان دورها التلخيص والشرح والترجمة، السبب الثاني هو أنه ركز على فلاسفة أوروبا والغرب وأهمل ما سواهم من فلاسفة إسلاميين وآسيويين.

١- أفلاطون :
الدولة عند أفلاطون يجب أن يحكمها الملوك الفلاسفة فهم قادة روحيون ولا يجوز أن يحكمها العامة والغوغاء ، فيكون التحضير لجمهورية أفلاطون كما يلي :
أولا يجب أن نبدأ بإخراج جميع السكان إلى الأرياف ونضع يدنا على الأطفال دون سن العاشرة لأنك لا تستطيع اقامة مدينة مثالية بأولاد صغار أفسدهم الكبار، ثم نعطي الأطفال فرصة التعليم،استخدم الرياضة والموسيقى ولا تقتصر على الرياضة لانها تحيلك للتوحش ولا الموسيقى فهي تجعلك لينا.

ولا يمكن للشعب أن يكون قويا دون الايمان بالله والآخرة،وبعد سن العشرين نجري امتحان تصفية ومن يفشل يوجه للأعمال الاقتصادية كالزراعة والصناعة ، ومن ينجح يتلقى تعليما وتدريبا لمدة ١٠ سنوات،ومن يفشل في الامتحان الثاني يصبح ضباطا ونخبرهم أنهم يجب ان يرضوا بقدر الله لأن الجميع أخوة.

ثم نعلم الناجحين الفلسفة في سن الثلاثين ولا نعلمهم إياها وهم أطفال لانها عزيزة ولا ينبغي أن تُتخذ للتسلية، وبعد ٥ سنوات من الإعداد الطويل يصلون أخيرا الى مرتبة "الفيلسوف" الذي سيتولى الحكم ويحرر الجنس البشري،لكن عليهم أن ينزلوا إلى كهوف الناس إذ لا قيمة للتعاليم إذا لم نقم بتجربتها،ويحكون ذقونهم الفلسفية أمام حقائق العالم القاسية ويكسبون خبزهم بعرق جبينهم لمدة ١٥ سنة ، ثم في سن الخمسين يصبح هؤلاء حكام الدولة.

لا يوجد نظام طبقي في أرستقراطية أفلاطون الديمقراطية ولا وراثة للمناصب فابن الحاكم وابن ماسح الأحذية يبدآن دراستهما على قدم المساواة وهكذا يحكمنا أفضل الرجال،إذا أثبتت المرأة مقدرتها دعها تحكم واذا اثبت الرجل نفسه قادرا على غسل الصحون دعه يقوم بعمله، هذا ملخص نظرية جمهورية أفلاطون المثالية،ولكن هل هي سالمة من النقد كما قد يبدو من بريقها ؟

احتكرت طبقة رجال الدين - بسبب طبيعتها البسيطة ومواهبها العلمية وميلها لحياة التأمل - مناصب الدولة ومراكزها في أوروبا الوسطى ، و استمدت السياسة الكاثوليكية الكثير من كذبة أفلاطون الملوكية وبذلك تمكنوا من حكم أوروبا بسهولة لمدة ١٠٠٠ عام ، وكذلك الشيوعية حين حكمت روسيا حيث كانت أقلية عمالية كرست حياتها لأهدافها كما فعل القديسون لدياناتهم ، وكل منهم يستحضر جمهورية أفلاطون أمامه التي يجب أن يحكمها صفوة ، وكل طرف يرى نفسه صفوة.

كذلك نظر أفلاطون الى الديمقراطيين الأثينيين والسفسطائيين على أنهم أعداء لأن الجماهير في نظره ليست مؤهلة للقيادة ، الهرم عنده عبارة عن قمة مكونة من (حكام) وهم العقل وفضيلتهم الحكمة ، يحيط بهم طائفة (المحاربين والحراس) الذين يمثلون الإرادة وفضيلتهم الشجاعة، ثم يأتي (الجماهير الشعبية) التي لا تشارك في الحكم وتمثل الغرائز وفضيلتهم التبصر وكبح جماح غرائزهم، جمهورية أفلاطون دولة عسكرية حيث يولد المواطنون منتمين لطبقاتهم ولايصعدون إلى أعلى إلا في حالات خاصة والعدالة هي أن يقوم كل فرد بواجبه في طبقته.

وفي دولة أفلاطون تكون العلاقة الجنسية منظمة بشكل صارم لإنجاب أفضل نشئ فهو يدعو إلى تطبيق علم الصحة الوراثية كما حاولت تطبيقه الحكومات الشمولية في القرن العشرين ، لذلك نقد "كارل بوبر" جمهورية افلاطون يشدة فهي دولة تقودها قلة مصطفاة وليس مسموحا فيها بالتعليم الا لقلة وتسيطر عليها الرقابة الصارمة المستبدة.

بعيدا عن السياسة تبنى أفلاطون في حواره المسمى ( فايدون) نظرية خلود الأرواح، وأضاف عليها نظرية تناسخ الأرواح - تبعا للتقاليد الفيثاغورثية - والتي وضعها في نهاية كتابه على هيئة قصة صوفية فالحياة ، العادلة مرتبطة بنظام العالم والذي نستطيع أن نتحدث عنه بمساعدة الأساطير وليس الحجج العقلية.

٢- أرسطو :
يرى أرسطو أنه لبلوغ السعادة علينا اتخاذ الطريق الأوسط ، فتنتظم الأخلاق عنده في شكل ثلاثي محدد ، فمثلا يكون بين التهور والجبن شيء اسمه الشجاعة ، لقد أوجد الحكماء السبعة تقليد الاعتدال عندما نقشوا على معبد أبولو (لا شيء فيه إفراط) ، ويعتقد أرسطو أن الوسط الذهبي ليس كل السعادة، فالسعادة في الصداقة التي هي أهم من العدالة ، اذ لا حاجة للعدالة حين يكون الناس أصدقاء، من له أصدقاء كثر لا صديق له، الصداقة الحقة تقتضي الدوام لا الشدة المتقطعة.

الإنسان المثالي عند أرسطو لا يعرض نفسه للمخاطر بغير ضرورة، والعار عنده هو مساعدة الناس له لأنه يراه دليل تبعية، لا يهز المثالي إعجاب الناس له، لا يساير الآخرين إلا اذا كان صديقا لأن المسايرة من شيم العبيد، لا يبالي بمدح او ذم الناس، أفضل صديق لنفسه ، يبتهج في الوحدة حيث أنه لا يعيش وحده الا الإله أو الوحش.

طبيعة الإنسان الوسط عند أرسطة هي أقرب إلى الوحش منها للإله، فمعظم الناس أغبياء وكسالى، وأفضل طريقة للحكم هو الأرستقراطية، وهي حكم قلة من المثقفين وأصحاب المؤهلات ، لا يجوز ترك تقرير المصير للكثرة ،وأسوء الحكومات هي الملكية بسبب عدم تحالف الفضيلة الكبرى والقوة الكبرى ، سيتوفر في الدولة الديمقراطية طريق مفتوح لكل منصب أمام الجميع ، أما في أرستقراطية أرسطو فالمناصب تفتح للمتعلمين فقط.

يرى أرسطو أنه إذا اعتقد الناس تدين الحاكم يقل خوفهم من ظلمه ويقل ميلهم للتآمر عليه لاعتقادهم أن الآلهة ستقاتل معه.

أما المرأة عنده فهي من الرجل كالعبد من السيد ، وهي رجل ناقص يجب أن لا تتساوى معه.

وقع أرسطو في أخطاء جسيمة في علم الأحياء - لكنها مقبولة بالنسبة لإمكانيات عصره - كاعتقاده ان الذكر هو الذي يحيي ويقوي الجنين ، ولم يكن يميز بين الشريان والوريد ، وكان يرى أن الدماغ مبرد للدم وأن عدد اعضاء الرجل ٨ وعدد اسنان المرأة اقل من الرجل وكذلك جمجمتها ، مع ذلك يعتبر أرسطو هو مؤسس علم الأجنة واقترب كثيرا من نظريات مندل الوراثية في وراثة الصفات بين السلالات.

عقديا يرى أرسطو أن الله كائن معنوي عنده روح مدركة لنفسها بلا ارادة ولا رغبات فهو لا يعمل شيئا سوى التفكير في جوهر الأشياء التي هي ذاته ، وهو ليس خالق العالم بل المحرك الأكبر لجميع عمليات العالم.

العقل الفعال عنده هو قوة الفكر المحضة التي لا يصيبها الفناء ، وأرسطو يدمر النفس برغباتها وعواطفها ويجعل للعقل وجودا سرمديا أبديا.

٣-فرانسيس بيكون:
يعتبر بيكون صوت الأوروبيين الذين حولوا القارة الأوروبية من أرض الغاب والأدغال إلى أرض الفن والعلم ، وإليه يرجع فضل فكرة دائرة المعارف الكبرى التي وضعت في عهد التنوير الفرنسي.

تبنى بيكون المذهب العملي أو البراجماتي الذي يعتبر أهمية المبادئ في نتائجها العملية ، فكان يرى ان الاستناد في الحكم دائما على الدراسة النظرية ضرب من مجون العلماء ، فرجال الأعمال يذمون الدراسة والبسطاء يكبرونها والحكماء يستخدمونها.

يجب تعويد الجسم على التطرف والإفراط، ويجب تعويده على الكبت لئلا تقضي عليه برهة انطلاق فيعجز عن كبحها ، فمن يتعود على الأطعمة السهلة يصاب بعسر هضم عندما يحال بينه وبينها لأي سبب من الأسباب.

نزع بيكون للميكافيللية اكثر من المسيحية فدينه كان كدين ملكه ، وكان يرى ان الملائكة والآلهة هم المتفرجون الوحيدون لمسرحية الانسانية ، وعندما اتهم بالالحاد رد انه قد لا يؤمن بجميع ماورد في الكتب الدينية لكنه من الاستحالة ان لايؤمن بوجود عقل مدبر لهذا العالم.

ويرى أن فئة الشباب هم مبتكرين ومنفذين أكثر منهم حكام ومستشارين ، ويرى بيكون أن أفضل أنواع الحكم هو الحكم الملكي والمركزي القوي ، وكان يبدي أسفه لتقدم الصناعة لأنها تفسد الناس وتصرفهم عن الحرب.

يرى بيكون أن أسباب الثورة هي كالتالي : البدع الدينية والضرائب وتغيير القوانين والعادات وتحطيم الامتيازات والظلم والاجانب وتقديم من لا يستحق والمجاعات والجنود المسرحون.

كتب كتاب (أطلانتس الجديدة) وهي عنده مدينة العلم الفاضلة - وقد تحدث افلاطون عن أطلانتس القديمة والتي هي القارة الغارقة في البحار الغربية وربما هي أمريكا التي لم تغرق لكن ما غرق هو شجاعة الناس في استكشاف المجهول - وتحدث فيها عن بحارة ضلوا طريقهم الى جزيرة عاملهم أهلها معاملة حسنة لكن أخبروهم أن القانون يمنع إقامة الأجانب ، وأنه حكمهم سليمان منذ ١٩٠٠ سنة وأنشأ بيت سليمان والذي يعتبر أنبل مؤسسات الدولة ، لا تضم هذه المدينة سياسيين لكن حكومة يتولى أمرها الفنيون والمهندسون والجيولوجيون والفلكيون والفلاسفة ، فلا توجد حكومة بالمعنى التقليدي لأن أهل مدينة بيكون الفاضلة مشغولون ببسط نفوذهم على الطبيعة والعلم ، فالحكام مشغولون بدراسة النجوم والانتفاع بقوة مساقط المياه ، والتجارة عبارة عن إرسال بعثة كل ١٢ سنة ليعيشوا بين الشعوب الاجنبية ويعودوا بعدها ليقدموا تقارير عن أبحاثهم الى زعماء بيت سليمان.

٤- سبينوزا :
يرى سبينوزا أن الأنبياء لجأوا في دعوتهم إلى جذب الخيال والسيطرة عليه ولم يستهدفوا مخاطبة العقل واضطروا لتكييف أنفسهم وفقا لرغبات الشعب وتفكيره ، لذلك لجأوا إلى سرد قصص المعجزات ، فبالمقارنة بتأثير الفلاسفة والعلماء فإن تأثير الأنبياء يعود للإسلوب البياني الساحر بحكم طبيعة رسالتهم وشدة عواطفهم ، فلو فسرنا التوراة على هذا الأساس لما وجدنا فيه ما يناقض العقل، أما لو فسرناه حرفيا فهو طافح بالتناقضات والمستحيلات، فمثلا لو قال موسى لقومه أن الرياح الشرقية هي من شقت البحر الأحمر لما كان لقوله أثر عليهم.

يجعل سبينوزا أول أنواع المعرفة الأخبار والإشاعات كمعرفتي بتاريخ ميلادي ، ثانيها التجربة الغامضة كأن يعرف الطبيب العلاج عن طريق التأثير العام فلم يتوصل لهذه المعرفة بالتجربة ، ثالثها التفكير كالتوصل إلى حقيقة كبر حجم الشمس ، رابعها الإستدلال السريع او الإدراك كمعرفة أن الكل أكبر من الجزء.

يجعل سبينوزا الطبيعة ذات مظهرين : الجوهر وهو الجهة الخالقة الفعالة الحيوية وهي الله ، العرض وهو الجهة المنفعلة والمخلوقة مثل الغابات والهواء ، وهو يشبه كلام القائلين بوحدة الوجود ، و"الله" عنده هو السلسلة السببية الكامنة وراء كل الأشياء.

يرى سبينوزا أن كل مخلوق يخلع صفاته الخاصة على الله ، فلو استطاع المثلث أن يتكلم لقال أن الله مثلثي الأعضاء ولقالت الدائرة أن طبيعة الله دائري ، لكن نقد الدكتور مارتينو هذه الفكرة بقوله إن جعل الله عبارة عن امتداد وفكر جاءت من نظر سبينوزا في حالات جسمه الطبيعية لأن الامتداد والفكر هما من صفات الأجسام والعقول


يجعل سبينوزا إرادة الله هي القوانين كلها وعقله هو العقول كلها والتي هي القوى المنتشرة في أرجاء الزمان والمكان وهو الوعي والإدراك الذي يبعث الحياة في العالم، العالم جبري ويسير في طريقة لا مناص منها ، والشر والخير نسبيان يعودان إلى أذواق البشر ،والله فوق خيرنا وشرنا.

حاول سبينوزا التوفيق بين أشكال الأخلاق الثلاث وحبكها في وحدة منسجمة : ١- بوذا والمسيح : الرحمة واللين والمحبة التي تدعو للمساواة بين الناس وتدفع الشر بالخير ٢- ميكافيللي ونيتشه : فضائل العنف والرجولة التي تدعو الى عدم المساواة وتمجد الحرب والفتح وتعتبر القوة هي الفضيلة وتعظم الأرستقراطية الوراثية في الحكم ٣- سقراط وأفلاطون وأرسطو : العقل الناضج المثقف هو الوحيد القادر على الحكم تبعا للظروف فيعرف متى يحب أن تسود المحبة والقوة فالفضيلة هي العقل ودعوا لنظام يجمع بين الأرستقراطية والديموقراطية.

ويرى أنه لو كان جميع الناس مسوقين بالعقل لما كان المجتمع بحاجة الى قوانين فالناس تسيطر عليهم العواطف والأهواء، وأنه يجب إطاعة القوانين حتى لو كانت جائرة مادامت الحكومة لا تمنع الناس من الكلام والاحتجاج بالطرق السلمية أما إن منعت فهي تكون قد هدمت جميع قوانين الدولة.

ويجب حصر المناصب في أصحاب الكفاءات لان الحكمة ليست في كثرة الناس وقد ينتخبون أكثر الناس بلادة في أعظم مناصب الدولة والجماهير متقلبة في أهوائها وميولها فيجب حصر حق الترشيح في أصحاب المواهب وأهل العلم.

٥- فولتير :
خط فولتير في رواياته خطا جديدا جعل من أبطاله آراء ، ومن أوغاده خرافات ، ومن حوادثه أفكار ، فمثلا أوجد في أحد رواياته التناقض بين المسيحية البدائية والكنائسية.

قدم لمدام "شاتليه" كتاب "مقال في أخلاق الشعوب" لكنها انتقدته بقولها انه لا يهمها أن "أبغل" خلف "هاكون" في السويد وعثمان هو ابن أرطغرل ! فوافقها وقال لا ينبغي أن يكتب التاريخ سوى الفلاسفة فلقد شوه التاريخ بالأساطير عند جميع الشعوب.

ثم عزم في تاريخه أن لا يتناول تاريخ الملوك بل الحركات والقوى الجماهيرية وأن لا يتناول الدول بل يتناول الجنس البشري ، وكان يقول جُرّد التاريخ من الفنون وتقدم العقل فلذلك لن فيه شيئا ، منع فولتير من دخول فرنسا لأنه اعتبر نفسه إنسانا أولا وفرنسيا ثانيا.

رفع فولتير شعار (اسحقوا العار) وأشعل نارا فكرية أدت لتحطيم الرهبانية في فرنسا ، فحاولت الكنيسة شراء ذمته وعرضت عليه قبعة كاردينال ، فرفض ورفع شعار التسامح الديني وقال ان السلام لن يتحقق مالم يتسامح الناس ويتعلموا كيف يتسامحون مع من يخالفهم.

طعن في موثوقية الإنجيل واستمد الكثير من كتاباته من سبينوزا ومن مبدأ الايمان بالله وحده وانكار الوحي والأنظمة الدينية وأطلق عبارته ( لقد كان أول كاهن أول محتال يقابل أول أحمق) ، بيّن أن الخلافات البسيطة في علم اللاهوت هي التي تسببت في الحروب الدينية ولم يكن سببها الشعوب البسيطة.

رفض الإلحاد و كان يرى أن الصلاة ليست لطلب اختراق قانون الطبيعة بل لقبول القانون على أساس أن إرادة الله لا تتغير ولا تتبدل.

كان يرى أن العبرانيين القدماء كانوا مجردين من الأخلاق ومع ذلك كانوا يعتقدون بأبدية الأرواح وبكونهم شعب الله المختار، أما سبينوزا فكان نموذجا للأخلاق مع كونه ملحدا ثم غير رأيه وأصبح يعتقد أن الإيمان لا قيمة له بدون الايمان بالخلود والثواب والعقاب ، وكان يريد من زوجته وخياطه أ�� يؤمنوا بالله وإلا غشوه في معاملته ، وحتى لو لم يكن لله موجودا فيجب أن نخترع إلها ، فالإيمان ساعد في إبعاد الناس عن الجرائم وما سبب الكوارث لنا هي الخرافات الدخيلة التي تصرفنا عن عبادة الله عبادة خالصة، فليس الدين ميتافيزيقيا فعبادة الله لغة يفهمها كل الناس وهي متمثلة في العبادة والعدل وعمل الخير ، قام فولتير ببناء كنيسة قال عنها إنها الكنيسة الوحيدة التي بنيت في أوروبا لعبادة الله.

الخلاف بين فولتير وروسو : يعتقد فولتير ان تغيير النظم يأتي بالتدريج والتعليم ومخاطبة العقل بالوسائل السلمية ، أما روسو الذي لم يؤمن بالعقل إلا قليلا فرأى وجوب تحطيم هذه النظم عن طريق العمل العاطفي الغريزي وتحطيم المدنية والآداب والعلوم والعودة الي الحالة الطبيعية التي كان يعيش فيها الإنسان ثم يبنى نظام جديد يكون الحكم فيه للحرية والمساواة والأخوة ، ورد فولتير على روسو أنه لم ي��م أحد بمثل هذه المحاولة التي تحاول تحويلنا إلى وحوش وحيوانات ، ومن كريم أخلاق فولتير أنه هاجم السلطات السويسرية لمنعها كتاب روسو ، وأطلق عبارته الشهيرة:
( أنا لا أتفق معك في كلمة واحدة مما قلته لكنني سأدافع عن حقك في الكلام وحرية التعبير حتى الموت )

٦- ميكافيللي :
هو أول مفكر حديث أسس فلسفة سياسية بعيدة عن الأساس الديني وضعت الدولة ومصلحتها فقط نصب عينها ،فتأنيب الضمير الأخلاقي خاضع لمصالح الدولة

كانت إيطاليا في عهده تمثل طاولة في لعبة الشطرنج للقوى العظمى فرنسا وأسبانيا وهابسبورج والذين قاموا بإشعال ٣ حروب كبيرة في إيطاليا بين عامي ١٤٩٢ و ١٥٢٥م ، فيما كانت إيطاليا كانت ممزقة الى فلورنسا والبندقية ومايلاند ونابولي ودولة البابا في روما ، فأراد ميكافيللي أن يظهر بمظهر منقذ الطليان من الألمان والفرنسيين والسويسريين والاسبان.

نظرت فلسفة أفلاطون وأرسطو السياسية الكلاسيكية للإنسان على أنه عاقل ، فالحاكم يتصرف بحكمة ويفترض في الخاضعين له ردود افعال عاقلة ، لكن الغرائز هي المسيطرة على الإنسان عند ميكافيللي وهي التي يجب أن يتوجه لها الحاكم وليس لعقله ؟ فالحاكم الحكيم ينظر له الشعب نظرة ضعف.

والفضيلة عند ميكافيللي هي القدرة على المرونة العقائدية أو الإستراتيجية في التعامل مع (حسن الحظ) وانتهاز اللحظة المناسبة ويدخل فيه إمكانية استعمال العنف أو الدهاء الماكر عند الضرورة.

طرح مبدأ القناع الأخلاقي ، والذي يوجب على الحاكم أن يقدم نفسه للشعب حسب متطلبات الموقف، ويجب أن يكون مرهوبا وليس مكروها، والضعف هو أن يحاول أن يكون محبوبا

٧- ديكارت :
- هو مؤسس نظرية المعرفة في العصر الحديث ، ينظر إلى الرياضيات - وبالأخص الهندسة منها - على أنها المثال الأعلى للمنهج العالمي للتدليل العلمي المطلق، فالعلوم عنده ترتكز على أساس غير مؤكد بما فيها علم الفلسفة.

( الشك المنهجي) : تعامل مع كل حكم في أول الأمر على أنه تحيز وأخضعه للشك فهو محرك المعرفة.

( التحليل) : المشكلة تصير أسهل عند تفكيكها إلى أجزاء مختلفة، فلإنجاز بناء في المعرفة يبدأ الإنسان بالمعارف البسيطة ومنها يتصاعد للمعارف المركبة. بيت العلم الإنساني لكل انسان مكان فيه لا ينقصه حجر واحد

يرى ديكارت أنه طالما أن المجتمع لا يمتلك يقينا في أي مجال علمي فيجب على الإنسان أن يعيش بأخلاق عصره ب(رزانة) تلتزم بقوانين الدولة ودينها و(تصميم) في السير دون تردد او اضطراب.

والقوانين الرياضية لا تستطيع أن توضح ما إذا كانت الأشياء التي تستند إليها موجودة حقيقة أم لا ، فمثلا زوايا المثلث تساوي ١٨٠ لاشك في ذلك لكنها لا تقول شيئا عما إذا كان مثل هذا المثلث موجودا حقيقة ، هل يوجد دليل على أننا لا نعيش في حلم يقدم وعودا كاذبة ؟

( أنا أفكر إذن أنا موجود ) : لا توجد مقولة واحدة في العالم لا يمكن أن يشك فيها حيث أن إدراكات حواسنا تستطيع خداعنا ، إلا الشك الذي هو عمل التفكير لا يمكن الشك فيه فهو اليقين الذي تقام عليه كل أنواع اليقين الأخرى، ثم من هذه المقولة انطلق ديكارت ليدلل على وجود الله---) فالإنسان ناقص لكن يوجد في تفكيره تصور لا ينمحي للكمال لكن الكمال غير وارد في عالمه ---) يتحتم ان هذا التصور قد غرس من ذات كاملة فلو لم يكن الله موجودا لما كان كاملا .

٨- باسكال :
يرفض رأي اللاهوتيين والفلاسفة الذين يجعلون الإنسان مرتبطا بذات الله من خلال عقله ، فالعقل عنده لا يمكن أن يكون همزة وصل بين الله والإنسان لأن الله خارج نطاق أي عقل ، فمحاولة إثبات وجوده عن طريق العقل محكوم عليها بالفشل، يعتبر باسكال من كبار المحفزين إلى مذهب الوجودية في القرن ٢٠

صاحب مقولة ( قلبي قلق حتى يستقر فيك ) ، فالإنسان عنده فزع من الفراغ يظل دائم البحث عن تشتيت الذهن.

( المبادئ سوف تُحس والنظريات سيستدل عليها ) فكل النظريات عند باسكال تأسست في الأصل على الحدس ولا يمكن معرفتها بالفعل بل بالقلب مثل أن الأعداد لا نهائية ، فالقلب يملك عقله الذاتي الذي لا يعرفه العقل بالمفهوم الضيق ، فيعطي باسكال محدودية للعقل في مقابل القلب الذي يمكن الوصول به إلى الله بإحساس القلب المتطابق مع مبدأ الحب أو الرحمة المسيحي والذي يعتبر معرفة الله كإحساس للقلب او كحب يمنح ولا يمكن اكتسابه.

يرى باسكال إن موقفنا من وجود الله هو موقف رهان إما للإيمان بوجوده أو عدم وجوده ، أما حرية الامتناع عن انخاذ قرار فلا يعترف بها باسكال، يجب على الإنسان أن يراهن على وجود الله لأن الخسارة الممكنة لا تتكافأ مطلقا مع مكسب السعادة الروحية الأبدية الممكن ، و على الإنسان أن يتصرف كمؤمن يتبع شعائر الدين ويكبح شهواته ليمهد لطريق الإيمان الحقيقي.

٩- جون لوك :
يرى لوك أن سلطة الحاكم تستمد شرعيتها من الناس وليس من ارادة الله، وكان ك يرى أنه عند وجود (الوضع البدائي) لا يمكن إنهاء الفوضى إلا بأن تعطي الناس الحقوق الكاملة لحاكم مسلح بسلطة مطلقة وهو هنا يقف بجانب الملكية المستبدة موافقا "هوبس" في نظريته عن العقد الاجتماعي.

ثم أصبح لوك مناصرا للبرلمان وللملكية الدستورية التي تجعل ما يقره البرلمان يعلو دائما فوق الملك والحكومة، وأخذ يدافع عن حرية ممارسة الشعائر الدينية لجميع الطوائف باستثناء الكاثوليك حيث أنهم لا يطيعون إلا البابا ولا يطيعون أي حاكم دينيوي مما يشكل خطرا على السلام الإجتماعي.

رد على "جون فيلمر" في كتابه (أبوة) والذي ادعى فيه أن الحكم الملكي يستمد شرعيته من السلطة الأبوية التي وهبها الله لآدم في التوراة، فرد عليه مستندا هو الآخر على التوراة.

يرى لوك أن للإنسان حسب قانون العقل ثلاثة حقوق أساسية : الحياة والحرية والملكية ، والله خلق كل البشر أحرارا متساوين، وعند اشتباه الأمر كن مع المواطنين ضد الحكام لأن الحكومة هي أداة المواطن وليس العكس.

تأثر به منظري الثورة الفرنسية مثل مونتيسكيو وفولتير وروسو ، وكذلك واضعي الدستور الأمريكي مثل توماس جيفرسون وفرانكلين.

١٠- هيغيل :
يرى هيغيل أننا لا نستطيع التفكير بشيء إلا إذا قارناه بشيء آخر، ولا يمكن لشيء أن يوجد أو يكون له معنى إذا كان مجردا عن العلاقات والصلات التي أكثرها شمولا هي صلة التناقض.

و الحقيقة عنده وحدة عضوية لأجزاء مضادة ، فتشكيل آرائنا بالنسبة للمسائل الكبرى هو التذبذب بين قطرين، فحركة التطور هي حركة دائمة للتوفيق بين الأضداد، فكل قضية تحتوي على تناقض تنتهي الى الإنسجام بين الأمور المتعارضة ، وذلك ينطبق على حركة الأفكار والكون ، فالمنطق والميتافيزيقية شيء واحد.

ومهمة الدين عند هيغيل هي بلوغ المنطق إلا وهو الله، والشعور أنه ذلك الذي تحللت فيه جميع المتناقضات من مادة وعقل وخير وشر وفاعل ومفعول.

وليس الصراع مع الشر مجرد تصور سلبي لكنه مرحلة لبلوغ الخير وتحقيقه فالتاريخ يصنع في الفترات التي يقرر فيها النمو والتطور فالإنسان يصل الى سموه الكامل عن طريق الإلزام والحاجة والمسؤوليات والشدة والألم ، كل حالة على الرغم من إن مصيرها الزوال فيها الحق المقدس الذي يخصها كمرحلة ضرورية للتطور.


١١- راولس :
- العدالة عند راولس لا تقبل الحلول الوسط فالعدل عنده يسبق الخير والصالح العام ، فالخير هو قبل كل شيء هذا الذي يعتبر عدلا ، خلافا لأصحاب النفعية الذين قدموا الخير والصالح العام على العدل ، فالسلوك العادل عند النفعية خاضع للسلوك الخير و خاضع للصالح العام الذي يمكن الوصول إليه من خلال السلوك الخير، فالخير يسبق العدل في الترتيب ، وهذا نتاج صراع عقائدي متوارث بين الليبرالية التي تعطي الأولوية لحقوق المواطن الفردية والحرية، والاشتراكية التي تعطي الاولوية للعدالة والاصلاح الإجتماعي ، لكن راولس برنامجه هو "العدالة كإنصاف" بدون تضحية بالحقوق الفردية عند الاشتباه وبذلك يكون عكس الاشتراكية في هذا الاتجاه.

يرى بأنه يتحتم على المجتمع الأخذ بعين الاعتبار حالة الأضعف اجتماعيا كمقياس حاسم ،وذلك خلافا لمذهب الليبرالية الكلاسيكية ، ولذلك هو يفضل مجتمعا محدود الرخاء اذا كان الحد الأدنى مضمون للأكثر فقرا على مجتمع غني ممكن أن أسقط فيه تحت خط الفقر.

تقف الدول الأوروبية وخصوصا الإسكندفانية منها قريبا من تصورات راولس -التي تعمل للصالح العام- من النظام الأمريكي الذي يعطي أولوية للنجاح الاقتصادي قبل الإجراءات الاجتماعية للدولة ، ولقد انتقد أصحاب الليبرالية الجديدة أفكار راولس مثل "ميخائيل فالزر" حيث نقدوا توجه راولس إلى دولة الرعاية الإجتماعية مع أن راولس نفسه انتقد تحول المواطن إلى متلق لمعونة الدولة وبذلك يدفن عزته النفسية

من الملفت أن راولس يرى أنه عند نفاد كل الوسائل المشروعة فإنه يقر للمواطن حق العصيان المدني.

The Story tried to salt itself with a seasoning of humor, not only because wisdom is not wise if it scares away merriment, but because a sense of humor, being born of perspective, bears a near kinship to philosophy; each is the soul of the other.

A few years ago, as I began teaching myself philosophy, I bought a used copy of this book. But I could never seem to get around to it. So its yellowed pages only grew more yellow, and its already cracked and broken spine castigated me from my bookshelf every time I passed by. Thus, to relieve my conscience, I finally decided to dive in; but I quickly lost interest. Every time I put the book down, I waited a long time before picking it up again; and it was only when I downloaded an audiobook that I was able to finish Durant’s popular history of philosophy.

This difficulty in finishing is the clearest indication of how I felt about it: I was unimpressed. Though by no means a bad book, and one with many good qualities, I can’t say I would recommend this book to anyone, for I believe Durant does an injustice to his topic. Simply put, this is both a poor history of and introduction to philosophy; it fails to convey adequately what philosophy is, what philosophers do, and how philosophy developed. There is little of intellectual or academic interest in these pages, and despite its eloquence I often managed to find the book quite dull.

The trouble comes early on, when Durant makes this announcement:

The author believes that epistemology has kidnapped modern philosophy, and well nigh ruined it; he hopes for the time when the study of the knowledge-process will be recognized as the business of psychology, and when philosophy will again be understood as the synthetic interpretation of all experience rather than the analytic description of the mode and process of experience itself.

The absurdity of the above paragraph is obvious to anyone who has read a fair share of philosophy. Writing a history of philosophy while omitting epistemology is like writing a history of chemistry while refusing to talk about chemical bonds. Epistemology is a central part of philosophy, and, besides, a central concern of the greatest modern philosophers; so any treatment of the subject lacking epistemology is doomed to miss the mark.

Besides this, I would also like to point out that the above paragraph reveals an intellectual weakness as well. How could epistemology be the subject of psychology, a science? Epistemology asks “What is knowledge?” This is clearly not a subject that can be investigated empirically or decided scientifically, for scientific investigation presupposes that knowledge is empirical in nature. In other words, by the time you set out to do science, epistemology is over and done with. So already Durant is showing himself to be a poor philosopher, as well as a poor historian.

When we get into the thick of Durant’s book, we encounter an even more general problem. Durant’s modus operandi throughout this work is to treat the ideas of philosophers as byproducts of their experiences and their personalities. Not only does this often lead him into cheap psychoanalyzing (such as speculating about how Nietzsche’s father and mother influenced his outlook) as well as broad and often ridiculous generalizations about peoples and places (the Germans do this, the Jews do that), but, more damningly, turns systems of philosophy into mere quirks of personality and whims of fancy. In this book, philosophers are artists, not thinkers. Although Durant would have you believe that this is the wise and cosmopolitan perspective on the matter, this fails completely to do justice to these men.

Philosophy is, among other things, the art of argumentation. Philosophers—good philosophers, at least—are extremely focused on the logical reasons for their beliefs. This is embodied in that great creation-myth of Western philosophy, Plato’s tales of Socrates, wherein that old sage wanders from citizen to citizen, perpetually demanding to know the reasons why they believe what they do. Plato’s Socrates is always asking, What do you mean by this word? And why do you mean it that way? The final goal of the philosopher is to harbour no dogmatic opinions—and by dogmatic I mean opinions that are accepted without scrutiny—but rather to probe and investigate every assumption, idea, and goal in life.

Durant’s treatment of philosophers does exactly the opposite. In Durant’s hands, philosophers are mere pundits, who spout theories left and right without taking the time to justify them. Durant’s chapters on their ideas are mere litanies of opinions; and the final impression is that philosophy is just the art of having pompous and high-sounding views about grandiose subjects. It is absolutely worthless to know that Plato believed in a world of ideal forms without knowing why he did so; and the same goes for every other philosopher’s view. This emphasis on reason and argument is what separates philosophy from philosophizing; but you will find almost exclusively the latter in this book.

I would be being unfair if I didn’t acknowledge that many of this book’s faults are due to its genesis. This book was originally published as a series of pamphlets for the Blue Book series, which were inexpensive paperbacks for worker education. This origin largely explains why this book contains such a huge chronological leap, from Aristotle all the way to Francis Bacon, and also why Durant continually emphasizes the practical over the theoretical, the biographical over the intellectual. Less excusable, perhaps, was Durant’s choice to write a chapter on Voltaire, who wasn’t even a philosopher, and Herbert Spencer, who was obsolescent even back when this book was written. Much better would have been a chapter on John Locke, who formulated many of the ideas later endorsed by Voltaire, and John Stuart Mill, a contemporary of Herbert Spencer who has had a much more lasting effect on the subsequent history of philosophy. While I’m at it, I think a chapter on Descartes would have been much better than a chapter on Francis Bacon (who is a fairly minor figure in the history of philosophy), for Descartes was also a pioneer of science, as well as a great mathematician, not to mention the father of modern philosophy.

For these reason, I would much more highly recommend Russell’s History of Western Philosophy over this book, as Russell, being himself a philosopher, at least does his best to reconstruct the reasons for other philosophers’ views, even if Russell sometimes falls short in this task. (I also want to note, in passing, that Durant considers Russell’s early work in logic and mathematics to be pure hogwash, whereas most philosophers today consider that to be Russell’s most enduring work.) The only place that Durant surpasses Russell is in his chapter on Kant, which I think is a truly excellent piece of work, and a good place to start for any students seeking to understand that obscure German metaphysician. But other than this brief flash of sunlight, the rest of this book is nothing but passing storm clouds, rumbling ominously, constantly threatening to rain, and yet passing overhead with nary a drop, leaving us as parched as they found us.

This is the best introduction to Western philosophy that the layman can find. It's a "dummies" book which, however, does not assume that the reader is a dummy.

I would have given it a five, had it included Eastern philosophies too.

قراءة هذا الكتاب تجربة جميلة و مفيدة جدا في نفس الوقت , صحيح انه من الصعب ان تختصر حياة فيلسوف و كتبه و افكاره في خمسين صفحة – وهي تقريبا متوسط عدد صفحات الفصل الواحد – لكن ما قدمه لي هذا الكتاب هي القدرة على رسم بعض الخطوط ووضع بعض الحدود والعلامات , فالامر أشبه بأنني اخيرا قد تعلمت ان ارسم خريطة العالم , ان اخط على الورقة البيضاء القارات وان ارسم حدود الدول و ان اضع بعض العواصم و المدن والانهار الكبيرة , وتلك خطوة معقولة جدا ولعل هذا ما اردته من الكتاب منذ البداية , لكن ان ارسم على الخريطة التضاريس , الجبال و السهول والمنخفضات و البحيرات , المدن والقرى الصغيرة , اتجاهات الرياح فهذا شيء أخر

"The Story of Philosophy", first published in 1924, tells the history of the philosophy through the life and work of philosophers the author considers great. The story of each philosopher's life and the summary of their philosophical views and contributions is followed by the critique section, which discusses the legacy of the philosopher's work. Being written in 1924, the chapter on Nietzsche misses any reference to the usage of his teachings made by Nazism. At the same time, probably because of the later editions, there is a mention of Bergson dying in 1941 and Sanatayana in 1952. So there is something chillingly unsatisfying in the chapter on Nietzsche left unupdated, in view of future developments.

I loved that for each of the greatest philosophers the author discussed how their philosophy is influenced by their personality and is very much its product.

What I didn't like was the author's petty and narrow-minded contempt towards mathematics, expressed on many occasions, his inability to accept that pure mathematics can be just as beautiful as philosophical suppositions. More than once he states that logic is "the most boring part of philosophy" (obviously, because of its close relationship with mathematics). According to Will Durant, Bertrand Russel rose to greatness only after he left mathematical logic behind and went into "pure" philosophy.

Other authors(for example, Piergiorgio Odifreddi) turn mathematical logic into an exciting and mentally stimulating narrative, but Will Durant's obviously nurtured a vicious old grudge against mathematics and logic.

In August of 1982 I was invited down to Tampa-St. Pete with my girlfriend to visit her paternal grandmother. We stayed in a trailer court with a pool during a week of hot and muggy weather. With no car, the only activities available to us were walks to the mall or sitting by the pool. For me, this being my first trip to Florida, the high points were the many varieties of reptiles: turtles in the drainage ditch behind the house and magical little lizards darting about everywhere.

School was to start when we returned, so I brought Durant's Story of Philosophy along. After a summer of recreational reading, it was time to get back into gear. Surprisingly, Durant's book turned out to be one of the best reads during the whole season. It was clear, coherent, even fun, the author mixing the lives of the philosophers in with their thinking. I particularly enjoyed reading his account of Spinoza, normally a rather obscure figure. I got so excited during part of that section that I had to get up, walk around and think before jumping in and out of the pool to begin anew.

وأخيرًا أنهيتُ كتاب قصة الفلسفة .. !
يمكنني اعتبار قراءته هي أفضل صزاقة عقدتها مع كتاب حتى الآن ، فلقد كنتُ حريصة على تلخيص معلوماته وتقسيمه إلى فصول والتخطيط على كل عبارة تلفتني بألوان مختلفة ، لقد قرأته بأمانة XD
يمكنني تلخيص رؤيتي حول الكتاب في نقاط متعددة :
١ : لم أستطع فهم المعيار الذي وضعه ويل ديورانت لاختيار الفلاسفة الذين تحدث عنهم في كتابه ، فكثير منهم لم يأت بجديد ولكنه جدد أفكارًا قديمة ومكررة ، استغربتُ منه عدم الحديث عن ديكارت مثلاً رغم أنه مؤسس مذهب الشك .

٢ : لم يتحدث إلا عن فلاسفة أوروبيين ويونانيين متجاهلاً فلاسفة الهند والمغرب العربي والأندلس وبقية بلاد العالم .. كان الأجدى أن يسمي كتابه قصة الفلسفة الأوروبية !

٣ : لقد حاول ديورانت أن يكون محايدًا عند الحديث حول فيلسوف ما أمكن ، لكنّه كان يفشل أحيانًا .

٤ : الترجمة مزعجة نوعًا ما وتحتوي على أخطاء كثيرة ، كنتُ أشعر بالتوتر وأنا أقرأ الكتاب ولم أدرك السبب حتى قرأتُ تنبيه مشاعل حول هذه النقطة .

٥ : حاول المترجم الرد على إساءة الفلاسفة للذات الإلهية وللأقدار في الهوامش وهذا أمر جيد جداً ، لكنّ ما أثار استاءي هو عدم رده على جملة أوردها المؤلف في بداية الكتاب حول أن عمر بن الخطاب أمر بإحراق مكتبة الاسكندرية خشية كتبها ، وهذه مغالطة تاريخية معروفة كان يجب على المؤلف الرد عليها .

٦ : لقد قررت منذ اللحظة الأولى التي أمسكتُ فيها الكتاب أنني سأتعامل مع أفكار الفلاسفة بحيادية كما سأتجاهل مبادئهم الدينية المنحرفة ، الحق أني خشيتُ على نفسي من التأثر بهم ولكنني خاطرتُ بالقراءة دون أن تكون لي الحصانة العقائدية الكافية ، لكن بعد انتهائي من قراءة الكتاب أدركتُ بأنّ تخبط الفلاسفة الديني وإنكارهم لوجود الله لا حول له ولا برهان ولا قوة ، الحمد لله الذي رزقنا نعمة الإسلام والعقيدة الحق

أخيرًا ، من المعروف أن هذا الكتاب أحد أعظم الكتب التي أُلّفت في الفلسفة ويعتبر فاتحةً جيدةً للتعرف على أشهر الفلاسفة - الأوربيين - !

চমৎকার বই, যদিও যারা বায়াসবিহীন বই নিয়ে অনেক বেশী ���ৎকণ্ঠিত, তাদের জন্য না। এই যেমন, রাসেলের বইটারে নিয়ে যেরকম গালবর্ষণ হয়, সেই গালের ভাগীদার করানো যায় ডুরান্টের প্রয়াসেরেও, কেনো না তিনি হেগেলরে দিছেন হার্বার্ট স্পেন্সারের একশ পাতার বিপরীতে আট পাতা, লিবনিজ, দেকার্তের জায়গা হয় নাই, জায়গা হয় নাই মার্ক্স বা অপরাপর পাড়ার বড় ভাইদেরও। তথাকথিত প্রি-সক্রেটিকদের নিয়েও তেমন উচ্চবাচ্য নাই, নাই স্বয়ং অ্যান্টি-ভগবান হিউম।

বইটা যে ইউরোপের দর্শনচর্চ্চা নিয়ে, অতএব ভারত-চিন-আফ্রিকা যে এই বইয়ে নাই, সেই কথা বহুবিধবার বলা হয়ে গেছে। আফ্রিকা অবশ্য কোথাও নাই, শুধু আছে ম্যাপ জুড়ে।

কিন্তু যা আছে, তা মণ্ডা মিঠাইয়ের বাড়া। ধরেন কেউ এইদেশের মিষ্টান্নগুলিরে নিয়ে আপনার কাছে বেহেশতে পার্সেল পাঠালো, রসমালাই, ছানার জিলাপী, এসব বাদ গেলো, আপনি তারে গালিও দিয়ে নিলেন, কিন্তু তাই বলে কি বাক্সবন্দী চমচম সাবাড় করতে আপনি অবহ��লা করবেন? এ বইয়ের ক্ষেত্রেও তাই, প্লাতো-আরিস্ততল বলুন, আর বেনেদৈত্য ক্রোসে বলুন, এদের সম্পর্কে এত সাবলীল বর্ণনা, ভুল বললাম, এদের ভাবনা চিন্তা সম্পর্কে এত সাবলীল বর্ণনা আমি কমই দেখেছি। আরো আছে ছোটো বেকন, স্পিনোজা, এবং শেষদিকে উইলিইয়াম জেমস বা সান্তায়ানা। আর এই ভদ্রলোকের বায়াসটাও পরিষ্কার, তিনি এপিষ্টেমোলজিওলাদের দেখতে পারেন না, একটু বাস্তবঘেষা রাজনৈতিক দর্শনের পক্ষে তিনি, হেগেলীয় 'এই দেখুন সব হিন্দী সিরিয়ালের প্লট কীভাবে আসলে একই'-এর বিপক্ষে, এসব তিনি স্পষ্ট করেই বলে রেখেছেন, রাসেলের মত অন্যত্র জেনে আসতে হয় না। তার এই বই নিয়ে গালির তুবড়ি ছোটে না সম্ভবত তিনি দর্শনের লোক না হয়ে ইতিহাসের লোক হয়েছেন বলে। কাক হয়ে কাকের মাংশ খাওয়ার দোষটা তারে কেউ দিতে পারে নাই হয়ত।

তাছাড়া তার পরিমিত, কিন্তু তীক্ষ্ণ রসবোধ। রাসেলেরে সম্পর্কে তিনি যখন বলেন, প্রথম বিশ্বযুদ্ধের সময় এক কনফারেন্সে রাসেলের চোখেমুখে মৃত্যুর ছাপ পড়ে ছিলো, যেমন সবসময় থাকে সেদিন রাসেলের বক্তব্যের বিষয় - এপিস্টেমোলজি - এর মুখে, অজান্তেই দাঁত বেরিয়ে পড়ে। কান্টের কথা বলার সময় নিজের ভাষায়, আর ভলতেয়ার ভলতেয়ারের মুখেই - এটাও ছিলো একটা অত্যন্ত প্রয়োজনীয় উদ্যোগ - কান্ট পড়ে কান্ট বুঝবো, এও কী সম্ভব। তবে হ্যাঁ, ডুরান্ট একটু বেশিই আশাব্যঞ্জক চিন্তাধারার মানুষ, এ কারণে তার শোপেনয়াওয়ারের বিপরীতে হার্বার্ট স্পেন্সাররে কবর থেকে তুলে আনতে হয়, দাবী করতে হয় যে তিনি ঊনবিংশ শতাব্দীর শ্রেষ্ঠতম ইংরেজ দার্শনিক, স্তুতি করতে হয় অবধ্য অঁরি বের্গসঁ-র।

সব মিলায়ে খুবই সহজপাঠ্য বিগিনারস গাইড, যেইটার অনেক জায়গায় আপত্তি করা যায়, ছুরিও চালানো যায়, কিন্তু সেটা করলে পাঠযোগ্যতা ভেঙে পড়তে পারে। আজই কিনে দিন আপনার ছোটো ভাই-বোনদের।

তাছাড়া, এই বই এতটাই বাংলা ভাষায় লেখা যে এটা পড়তে গিয়ে প্রথমবার টের পাইলাম, আমার কোনো দর্শনে আস্থা নাই, আমি আসলে হয়ত নাস্তিকও না শুধু, মহাপাতক গোছের কিছু একটা। আমার এই সবকিছুতে অবিশ্বাস্, অনস্তিত্বে অবিশ্বাস, অবিশ্বাসেও, এইটা যেনো অশ্বত্থামার মত, একবার হাতি হয়ে মরে যেই বেচারা এখন তিন হাজার বছর শুধু মাথা ঠুকে যাবে। এই প্রশ্ন আগে কোনো বই পড়ে হয় নাই, কারণ আর কোনো দর্শন বিষয়ের বই আর যাই হোক, এতখানি জলবৎ হয় না।

Ok, so I can only give this book two stars for the following reasons:

* According to the (admittedly arbitrary) GR star-signification system, two stars means it's "ok"

* This is, of course, a bit of an arbitrary distinction amid arbitrariness (stars? wtf?) since a more definitive statement isn't really being made

* Ironically, I'm going to (have to) back up my seemingly arbitrary statement with some definitive ones! Ambiguity be damned! Let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late...

* So I definitely applaud the book for being a popular, cheap, relatively compact, little buffet of philosophical thought. It definitely turned a lot of curious people (old and young alike) into the initially forbidding worlds of Plato, Epictetus, Hegel, Kant, Locke, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, et al.

* That's a really good thing. It doesn't really matter what the particular qualities of the gateway drug are, it's more important where it leads you. If this book got people to start mulling over the dialectic and the categorical imperative and existenz then that's no doubt a good thing.

* But, at the same time, I strongly suspect that Mister Durant is kind of full of shit.

* I mean, I'm no expert on the history of philosophy but I think there's a handy way to keep anthologies and intro-fests to a sort of gold standard.

* Read the excerpts that deal with your particular area of expertise and you'll most likely get a sense of the kind of perspective the book itself is taking.

* I know a lot about Nietzsche (I know, I know, but still...) and I was pretty much shocked to see how Durant does him in his specific entry.

* Nietzsche's father, a solider, died when lil' Fred was small? Ok. Sure. That's a fact, alright, but...

* This meant that Nietzsche had a misplaced dad/warrior obsession that led him to draw some crazy conclusions about master/slave and ubermensch and all that?

* Nope. Nopenopenopenope. That's just weak, lazy presupposition and lame-as-hell summary or explication of Nietzsche's work. Bargain-basement psychoanalyzing of a guy who knew himself some psychology (and he didn't always get it from a book, either) that really actually obfuscates the issue at hand, which is to introduce the neophytes to important figures in the history of Western thought.

* Honestly, the more I think about it the more annoyed I get. I mean, seriously. Love or hate the guy but don't pigeonhole him because of one event that happened BEFORE HE PROBABLY EVEN KNEW IT DID and let that wrap up decades of intense reflection. What, judge Kant by his metronomyic daily walk around the block or Bentham by the fact that he wanted to be...er...mummified after he died? (it's true, dig it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Je...)

* I'm plenty happy to psychoanalyze philosophers, but only to a point. You can't brusquely shade over someone's entire philosophical career with shite like that. Unless, you're assuming that you don't actually need to teach people something about their work and can pretty much just wrap it up in the guise of brevity or metaphor, but, if this were true: why bother in the first place?

* So, ipso facto, this book's explanations of other thinkers is rendered pretty highly suspect.

* Good to break people like me in, who find august names like Spinoza and Heidegger daunting but am deeply curious about what they thought, but potentially very bad if this kind of shite is all you have to go on.

للخروج من الكتاب بأكبر فائدة ممكنة , كتبت بعض الملاحظات :
1) الكثير من القراء يرشح الكتاب كمدخل لمن لا يعرف عن الفلسفة , و أنا لست أجده ترشيحا في مكانه , فالكتاب غير مناسب أبدا لمن لا خلفية له مطلقا عن الفلسفة .. فهو لا يعرفك بالفلسفة و لا موضوعتها .. فقط سرد تاريخي للفلاسفة .. كما أن ديورانت اختار في الغالب الفلاسفة الذين لا زالت فلسفتهم تتردد أصدائها في عالمنا المعاصر . كما أنه أهمل ذكر الفلسفات المعقدة لكل فيلسوف مكتفيا بطابع فلسفته العام .. و هناك فلاسفة مهمين مثل هيجل تجنب عرضهم تلافيا للصعوبة كما أظن .
2) أنصح دائما بكورس crashcourse philosophy كمقدمة لمن أراد التعرف على الفلسفة , فالفيديوهات ذات العشر دقائق . مع سهولة العرض و سلاسة التقديم .. و المحتوى غير متحيز لوجهات النظر المختلفة إلى حد ما .. على عكس قناة school of life ... التي لا أنصح بسلسلتها عن الفلسفة أبدا .
3) كما أن رواية عالم صوفي هي خيار جيد جدا لتبدأ به بعد الفيديوهات ... و لو أتبعت الرواية بكتاب قصة الحضارة المجلد السابع , لتتعرف على مهد الفلسفة الأوروبية و الفلاسفة الماقبل سقراط , سيكون الوضع أفضل .. و إن شئت اكتفيت بالصفحات من 174 إلى 233 و من 461 الى 509 ..
4) و لتغطية الفلاسفة الذين تم إهمالهم في الكتاب يمكنك القراءة بالتزامن مقدمات من سلسلة مقدمة قصيرة جدا .. الصادرة عن دار هنداوي .. و هي ليست كثيرة ..
ديكارت : مقدمة قصيرة جدا
* أظن أنه من المهم الاطلاع على ديكارت لفهم أفضل للفلاسفة الذين سبقهم .
جون لوك : مقدمة قصيرة جدا
روسو : مقدمة قصيرة جدا
* الكتاب مهم جدا و سلس , خصوصا أن ديورانت يهمل روسو و يختزله في عبارات سطحية.
هيجل : مقدمة قصيرة جدا
* أظن أنك لو لم تقرأ من هذه السلسلة سوى هذا الكتاب لكفاك , و لا أظن أن من الممكن أن تكمل قصة الفلسفة دون تتعرف إلى هيجل .

و لفهم أفضل لفلسفة نيتشة , على وجه أفضل مما أورده ديورانت و بشكل أعمق , هناك فصل نيتشة من كتاب تعلم الحياة – لوك فراي .. من أفضل الذين تناولوا فلسفة نيتشة ممن قرأت لهم أو سمعتهم .

كانت رحلة ممتعة بحق .

As a total philosophy novice, this book served as a great introduction – lucidly written, a gripping kaleidoscopic look at the lives of some of the great thinkers of our time, and largely accessible apart from the (unavoidable) strays into abstruse philosophy talk. To me, philosophy is most appealing when applied to the political, social or personal realm; it’s the metaphysical part that I struggle to get my head around.

The most interesting sections in this book were those that dealt with the early Greek philosophers; Voltaire and his strong convictions against political inequality and religious persecution; and the life of the mad man Nietzsche who I don’t necessarily agree with but put across his views in the most arresting, compelling and fiercely poetic way possible. Spinoza and Kant I found to be intriguing yet baffling, although I desperately wanted to understand them better, particularly as the views of the former were borne from the kind of discrimination that most heroes suffer from. What I did get from him is that we need not become atheists if we don’t believe in God, but just understand that God is Nature, impartial, but also a guiding light when we need to see wisdom in the dark.

‘Spinoza does not accept the divinity of Christ, but puts him first among men’

I found Schopenhauer’s incessant negativity a bit depressing, and Herbert Spencer’s sci-fi like vision of the world evolving and then dissolving fascinating but full of too many sweeping generalizations.

Among other things, this book made me questions the merit of democracy and revolutions; did they really bring about the changes desired in the first place? In the case of Russia didn’t it even beget (if not a worse system) a worse abuse of power by the ruling class?

‘The nemesis of revolution….(is) that in order to survive they must restore the tyranny they destroyed’

As libertarian as I like to be, American philosopher George Santayana poses a very interesting question; is man better off (as Hinduism often preaches) being content with his own lot instead of participating in – and therefore perpetuating to infinity – the rat race of life which is the cause of so much lack of inner peace?

‘What Santayana despises above all is the chaos and indecent haste of modern life. He wonders was there not more happiness for men in the old aristocratic doctrine that the good is not liberty, but wisdom, and contentment with one’s natural restrictions; the classical tradition knew that only a few can win. But now that democracy has opened the great free-for-all, catch-as-catch-can wrestling match of laissez faire industrialism, every soul is torn with climbing, and no one knows content’

Dubious, but haven’t all of us wondered at some point that ambition in the wrong hands can be the root of many ills? Plato for example thought that politics could benefit from a slight ‘elitism’; leaving power in the hands of those who were most competent to rule, rather than allow leaders to be selected on the basis of crowd-pleasing attributes:

‘When we are ill we call for a trained physician, whose degree is a guarantee of specific preparation and technical competence-we do not ask for the handsomest physician, or the most eloquent one; well then, when the whole state is ill should we not look for the service and guidance of the wisest and the best? To devise a method of barring incompetence and knavery from public office, and of selecting and preparing the best to rule for the common good-that is the problem of political philosophy’

An idealistic view, thoroughly debatable, but one guided by enlightened principles – what is perfect philosophy if not that? Seriously, I’m still not sure! But at least I feel I’m on the road to knowing thanks to this great book.

بدون تردید فیلسوفانی هستند که همه اقسام حکمت را دارا هستند جز عقل سلیم و بسا پرواز های فلسفی که در نتیجه رقت و انبساط هوای مجاور بوده است.در این سفر که در پیش داریم باید تصمیم بگیریم که جز در بنادر روشن و پرنور قدم نگذاریم و از آبهای تیره و گل آلود ماوراطبیعه و دریا های پر سر و صدای الهیات بر حذر باشیم

بنابراین نکته مثبت کتاب آن است که تنها فلاسفه ای که حرفی برای گفتن دارند ذکر کرده و به شرح زندگی و عقاید آن ها پرداخته است.
نکته منفی کتاب نیز آن است که نویسنده گاه جانبدارانه از برخی فیلسوفان نقد کرده که این امر در مورد ارسطو و شوپنهاور کاملا مشهود است.و جنبه منفی دیگر هم به ترجمه کتاب است که در برخی جا ها از فهم مطلب را دشوار کرده است و نیاز به چند بار خوانی دارد.
در مجموع من کتاب های برایان مگی بویژه سرگذشت فلسفه را بر این کتاب در مورد تاریخ فلسفه ترجیح میدم.

“Science is organized knowledge. Wisdom is organized life.”

The Story of Philosophy is an incredible yet compact book. Despite being 700 pages, it could have been double its length and still would feel like it had more to discuss. Firstly, I will say the name can be misleading (main title) as it primarily focuses on Western Philosophy, and even that, a lot isn't tackled. That said, Will Durant does a great job covering Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Francis Bacon, Spinoza, Voltaire, Kant, Schopenhauer, Spencer, Nietzsche, Bergson, Benedetto Croce, Bertrand Russell, Santayana, William James, and John Dewey philosophies. I won’t review every single philosophy but briefly talk about Will Durant's approach.

The biggest strength of the text is the composition of the chapters. When Will Durant should input his own observations or when it should be the philosophers he is discussing (like Plato) It firstly begins with a small background of the philosopher; he then connects the dots to the prior philosophers (what carried over or what didn’t), exploring their philosophies (in bite sizes) and end with either a conclusion or end note. Furthermore, Will Durant’s prose is simply gorgeous to read. He does an incredible job at helping you (coming to terms with some ideas). I wouldn't state that Will Durant holds your hands (as certain elements are for sure difficult) but, he makes the subject more approachable with his clarity. It's hard to believe this is Durant first published book as it's written so well.

Brief talk of some of the Philosophers:

It’s so damn fascinating that so much of Plato’s writing can still be applicable nowadays. I won’t say I agree with him wholeheartedly, however, the core principles of the Republic I do agree with in some measure. An example the right people should oversee the state, the person who has the qualification to lead. Though aspects I believe are quite naïve, however, the principles are heading in the right direction for humanity. The man was a forward thinker, and I can’t see why he’s so beloved. The criticism page was fascinating. It’s not what you would think, yes Will criticises aspects of Plato’s philosophy, but he also defends his philosophy from the usual criticism that often opposes his ideology, explaining rationally why certain arguments are quite flawed.

Aristotle was an interesting read as he had such a stark contrast to the philosophy of Plato. Surprising a lot is stated can be still applicable to our current society. I enjoyed his perspective on Democracy and Aristocracy, Ethics, Metaphysics, and some others. Though because there were the first people to create the discipline of biology, a lot stated (in that field) is simply wrong. His perspective on marriage has aged the poorest out of the many things he tackles though it's 2000+ years old it's only to be expected. Once again, the criticism section was very insightful, the historical background was cool to learn and learning about the death of Aristotle was interesting. It's duller than Plato’s philosophy and less engaging but solid overall.

Francis Bacon is a very interesting man; he was one of the founding fathers (if not the founding father) of modern philosophy. One aspect I seriously must respect for him is his perspective on science. Though it's not the modern method of “hypothesis, deduction and experiment”, It was the closest thing to it, especially during the era he was born in. He was trying to bridge the gap (or mistake) that he saw within Greek Philosophers with a less theoretically perspective but built upon practicality (or logic). However, he had a similar perspective (like Plato’s) on government, how a philosopher-king is ideal. He believed Monarchy was the best form of government. His philosophy was more building upon the philosophers that influence him he’s technically not “original” but akin to Shakespeare wears his influences on his sleeves. Whenever Durant was quoting him, it was just bloody elegant, the man's prose was beautiful to read. Of course, I don’t wholly believe in his philosophy, but it’s interesting.

“Read not to contradict and confute; nor to believe and take for granted; nor to find talk and discourse; but to weigh and consider. Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested: that is, some books are to be read only in parts, others to be read, but not curiously, and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention.”

The Voltaire exploration might have been the most engaging section for me. Both Voltaire's philosophy and general life experience, I found to be very intriguing. He was an agnostic man and a champion for reason. There were numerous quotes stated by him that still rings true (to our current society and my own philosophy). The man was indeed one of the greatest thinkers to exist.

There’s more to explore here and I’m not touching the surface, but I hope this illustrates a good point. This book makes you think. The Philosopher-King, ideology opposing that concept, logic, science, the nature of metaphysics, what is conscientious and so much varied ideologies are explored.

Conclusion:

In Conclusion, I loved reading this incredibly dense book. One of my favourite aspects is how aspects of the philosophers connected to each other. It was interesting reading about their background, ideologies, what made them distinct and so much more. Did things go over my head? Absolutely, in particular Immanuel Kant. However, this book has made me interested to tackle more philosophy and read the primary sources. So, it has achieved its task. Being a history and development of philosophical ideas (of certain philosophes) in the Western world.

کتاب با ترجمه ی عالی زریاب خویی اطلاعات سودمندی را از مسیر تاریخی فلسفه به ما می دهد. کتابی که از یونان شروع کرده و در آمریکای معاصر تمام شده است. البته معاصر به سال 1926. یکی از ویژگی های مهم کتاب این است که ویل دورانت فیلسوفان را از کتاب ها و نوشته های خودشان به ما معرفی می کند. یعنی اکثر متون شامل متن های کتاب های آنهاست. همچنین در آخر هرفصل نقدها و یا سوال های وارده به مکتب هر فیلسوف را نیز بیان کرده است. و اینکه علاوه بر معرفی همه ی کتاب های آنها در صیمت پاورقی کتاب هایی را که ساده فهمتر هستد ویا برای آشنایی اولیه بهتر است از آنها شروع کنیم را هم معرفی کرده است. به نظر من کتاب دنیای سوفی و سپس این کتاب معرفی خوب و اجمالی از جریان تاریخی فلسفه و معرفی مکتب های فلسفی برای کسانی که می خواهند شناختی از فلسفه داشته باشند دارد. البته وقتی آدم این کتابها را می خواند متاسفانه جای فلسفه ی شرق و ایرانی و اسلامی را در آن خالی می بیند. من وقتی این کتاب را تمام کردم به یاد آن جمله ی اساطیری افتادم که می گفت: حقیقت ابتدا آینه ای بود که شکست و هر انسانی تکه ای از آن را یافت و فکر کرد که به حقیقت رسیده است.

ربما تكون المعرفة هي السُّلطة لكن لغتها ملتبسة على مريديها، لذلك كان انتظار ارتفاع المخزون وتزايده و الأهم دقته بعد كل قراءة معرفية وفلسفية غاية في حد ذاتها و إن كانت بطيئة المنال
ف ( هنيئًا لمن لم يصبح بعد عبداً لذلك الإنتظار الذي تضعه فينا العادة ) كما يقول جوستاين غاردر، وليته يعلم ما تفعله العجالة لفهم كل هذا الكم من الفلسفة في أنفس هذا الجيل..أدين لغاردر بترتيب كل غوغاء الفلاسفة في عقلي بداية من الأسماء حتى الأفكار كما سأدين لديورانت بترتيب كل هذه المدارس الفلسفية.

حسنًا، اتفق مع من يقول أن هذه قصة فلاسفة وليست قصة فلسفة لكنما يعرف كل أمر برجاله كما عمرانه أو حيزه سيحيلك تلقائيًا للاستعلام لهوية بنائيه ، بين يديك توليفة تاريخية و بيوغرافية عن أهم الفلاسفة لفهم وجههم الإنساني الهش أولاً ،و لمحة عن نهجهم الفلسفي الذي يتضمن أهم نظرياتهم و أفكارهم بقلم الفيلسوف و المؤرخ الأمريكي ويل ديورانت، يتبع كل ذلك وهذا هو الأهم بورقة نقدية بقلم ديورانت يبين فيها رأيه الخاص و أبرز نقاط اتفاقه و اختلافه مع كل فيلسوف أدرجه في هذه القائمة ، و حتى بأسلوب ديورانت السلس والتشجيعي استغرقت القراءة وقتًا مطولًا، ولكن صدقًا أحببت هذا الوقت ولم أبالي بطوله وهو لم يستخرج حماستي البتة، يقال إنك إن أردت أن تكون من ضيوف الفلسفة فهذا هو الباب الذي تطرقه لتستأذن داخلاً لعالمها.

رغم إن العنصر الفلسفي هو العنصر الغائب عن مكتبتي الأولى بقى الأقرب لاهتمامي و الإثارة لشغفي لاقترانه بالعنصر التاريخي، معلوماتي الفلسفية عموماً معقولة حتى نيتشه ما عدا ليبيبنتز الذي نادراً ما سمعت به و برجسون الذي فاجئني، لهذا كان هذا الكتاب فرصة للتعرف على الفلسفة الحديثة بالنسبة لي من خلال ما صنفهم ديورانت بفلاسفة أمريكا المعاصرون/ جورج سنتيانا و وليم جيمس و جون ديوي الذي يثبت التعرف على مذاهبهم وآرائهم أن المشاكل الفلسفية الأم لازالت قائمة والاختلافات التي انجبت الفلسفة حاضرة في كل عصر و أوان بدليل مناداتهم للعودة للأنساق النظرية ما قبل تشكيل الفكر الكتابي وبعده لفلسفة الأوائل أصحاب الميادين المعرفية التي لم تبلى مع الزمن عند البعض، تلك الخيوط الأساسية التي عاد لها الفلاسفة مرا��اً للجمع والفصل ولكن بصور أخرى تحمل بصمات كل منهم الفلسفية ، و بينما تقتصر معرفتي لسارتر و كامو ببعض الأعمال الأدبية دون الفلسفية كالغثيان و الطاعون كانت فرصة للتعرف عليهم أيضًا، نجح ديورانت في تقريب صورة من استغلق على جزئيًا فهمه بينهم و اعتقد أن خيار ديورانت لهذه الثلة الفلسفية جاء مدروسًا وإلا لكان الكتاب امتد إلى ما لا نهاية .. و إن انتباني احساس أنه بناه على تفضيلات شخصية توجب عليّ التعرف على ديورانت نفسه بشكل أفضل لمعرفة سبب خياراته ..لذلك أميل -مؤقتًا -لفكرة أنه صنع منهم نقاط أرخميدس ( أعطني نقطة ثابتة لأرفع العالم ) ورفع العالم له معانٍ إيجابية كما له أخرى سلبية فهو خلخلة توازن متعمدة أحيانًا.. لذلك نجده مقابل كل نقطة أرخميدس يمر سريعًا على من حولها من فلاسفة كإرهاصات لظهور الفيلسوف الذي اختاره وليس هذا اجحاف بوجهة نظره، أجده بنى انتقاؤه لهم على أساس أنهم:
- الشخصيات الإنتقالية القادرة على حسم صراع فلسفي معين ( كما في حالة صراع فلاسفة الطبيعة والمادية الذي غير مساره سقراط - أعرف نفسك- أولاً ) ولو أن ذلك لا يشفع لديورانت تغطيته الشحيحة لمحاولة جرّ الفلسفة تحت قبة الدين متمثلة في فلاسفة القروسطية و عصر النهضة ( توما الأوكيني و القديس أوغسطين ) كأبرز الأمثلة اللاهوتية ..مقابل تشاؤمية شوبنهاور و جدلية هيغل وحلوليته و إلحاد نيتشه وهذا ما شكل خلل في التسلسل بالنسبة لي فكل صراع فلسفي توّلد عنه صراع فكري مؤيد أو مضاد للمعتقدات الفلسفية/ تطرف ديني / نزعة عدمية أو إلحادية كما تمخض اختلاف بارمنيدس وهيرقليطس عن عدمية وشكوكية زينون ثم أسفر كل هذا عن ولادة فلسفة سقراط وتلاميذه - رغم تباينها- و استمراريتها، وبهذا كانت الرواقية و الإبقورية في جدل وصراع لم تنهه المسيحية ألا سطحيًا ويتبعها نقد فلاسفة الهيلينية لفلاسفة الأغريق القدامى كما في غنوصية ومثنوية أفلوطين الذي جمع مسيحيته بالتصوف و تمسكه مبادئ أفلاطون. وهذا الصراع والتشعبات التي تليه مستمرة كما وضّح ديورانت في نهج فلاسفة امريكا سنتيانا و ديوي و جيمس .

- أو بحسب مواقف و كتب و إصدارات فلسفية نشروها وأثرت في تاريخ الفلسفة وبنت توجهات معينة أو تنامى في أعقابها حس قومي وثوري متاخم لها ومستلهمًا أسسها التنويرية فولتير الأبيقوري النزعة و روسو العقلاني - الأخلاقي النزعة مثلاً- مع وجوب ملاحظة اختلافهما الجذري.
-أو من قاموا ببناء معرفة صفرية من جديد
- أو من أقاموا فلسفتهم بأفكار هدامة تركتهم معلقين بين اللأدرية و الإلحاد و العدمية.
- تناوله ل ( كانت ) رغم افراده له أبواب معدودة يُقال في جملة واحدة، إذا ما تذكرت جملة جوستاين جاردر عنه( كانط هو عقل تطبيقي يقوم بخيار اخلاقي) لا وصف مقتضب ومصيب كوصف غاردر ،ف ( كانت ) جمع المدارس العقلانية والتجريبة في بديهيته المثالية و تأكيده المشهور بضرورة الاعتقاد بوجود الله، التضارب أثناء القراءة عن بعض الفلاسفة هو ما يصلني وخصوصا عن هذا الفيلسوف .

الكتاب مرجع فلسفي وخطوة ثابتة أولى لترفع العالم.

أتمنى أن التفلسف لم يمنعني عن التركيز في قول رأيي بالكتاب.

on bad side, book is a difficult reading and if you are new to subject might kill entirely your interest. Also it should be called 'The story of western Philosophy' as there is absolutely nothing about Asian philosophy.Also some big names from western philosophy itself are missing. For someone wanting an introduction,'Sophie's world' is incredible reading. it is for more serious students and it wins 4 stars as it is far better far better than you may find in market. you can't help respecting writer for his hard work and analysis of the few philosophers he discuses.

الكتاب يتحدث عن الفلاسفة انفسهم اكثر من الفلسفة..وهذا امر جيد للمبتدئين في مجال علم الفلسفة
هناك بعض الاشكاليات :
اولا انه لم يتكلم الا عن فلاسفة اوروبا وعرج على فلاسفة امريكا قليلا وتجاهل بقية العالم
ثانيا : نجده يسهب مع بعض الفلاسفة على حساب فلاسفة اخرين
ثالثا :بدأ من سقراط متجاهلا الفلاسفة قبله مثل انكسوجوراس وهيرقليتس وغيرهم من السفسطائيين وافلاسفة
ولكن وبشكل عام اقيمه الكتاب بجيد جدا

A best book to begin with to acquaint with philosophy. The author has imbued the whole work with passion, clarity and brevity. The nuances of each philosophical idea is explained without turning pedantic and the striking vein of agility in his style provides a colorful read.

I enjoyed those chapters on Voltaire(my favorite writer and philosopher) and the dazzling accounts on Spinoza. Never before have I understood the philosophical stand of Kant with such a pristine lucidity. However, I am skeptical about the author's account of Nietzsche and his views upon the philosopher.

The book kindles our imagination and offers a delicious food for our thought by presenting the world's best minds at war in their course to understand and reveal the meaning of this world, in and around us.

An Essential read for every beginner of philosophy.

لو قيل لي أن أقترح كتابا كـ”قصص ما قبل النوم” لاقترحت هذا الكتاب.
لم أتوقع أن يكون بمثل هذه الخفة الأدبية، والوضوح والسهولة، فالكتاب جاء قريبا في معانيه ومبانيه من مستوى العامة، ولا تشعر معه بأي ثقل، أو نخبوية.
أعتبره من الكتب المتوسطة حجما، وقيمة، وأسلوبا، وصالح للقراءة اليومية.
ولو سمي بـ"قصة الفلاسفة" لكان أدق، إذ أنه يسير مع كل فيلسوف مستعرضا قصة حياته بناء على تسلسل أفكاره بإيجاز وبساطة.
قد تشعر بانقطاع في نصوص الكتاب لاسيما بين فيلسوف وآخر، إذ تحمل روحه طابع المقالات أكثر من النص المتسق والموحد في السرد.
كما أن استعراض أفكار الفلاسفة هو من زاوية ديورانتية بحتة، والتركيز على بعض المواطن في فلسفاتهم هو لا يخلو من انحياز في الفهم أو الاهتمام، وقد لا يعبر بالضرورة عن هذا الفيلسوف كما يجب، وقد طرح في صور مبسطة، وإلا فإن فكرة واحدة من بعض الأفكار المطروحة بالكتاب قد تكون محل أبحاث أكاديمية، وحلق علمية.

I've recently completed rereading the 1953 edition (12th printing) of Will Durant's 1926 work, The Story of Philosophy: The Lives & Opinions of the Greater Philosophers, a comprehensive overview that begins with Plato & ends in the early 20th century with Santayana, James & Dewey.


While finding it a wonderfully composed catalogue of philosophers over some 24 centuries, I am not unaware of the criticism of this book, some of it rather severe. However, Durant does exactly what he claims to do in the book's title & its sub-heading. He considers that the lives, the humanity of each of the philosophers covered is intimately intertwined with their "opinions", their respective philosophy, each constituting a "story".

Durant's commentary seems amazingly objective & yet sensitive, even compassionate when assessing each of the philosophers surveyed. While this approach will not please every reader, it stands as a captivating overview of philosophy & philosophers, which may be why it remains in print a century after its publication & why I found it an enduring statement 50+ years after my first reading the book.

Beginning with the 2nd edition preface, Durant speaks of the collaboration of "so many physical & social sciences in changing the interpretations of history, in the midst of the battlefronts of truth." He believes that "every science begins as philosophy & ends as art, with philosophy the front trench in the siege of truth and science as the captured territory." Perhaps, this is overly prosaic but it stands as Durant's point of departure for philosophy.


Durant begins with Socrates' statement that he knows only one thing and that is that he knows nothing; thus, philosophy begins when one learns to doubt. Plato's life is changed by the intersection with Socrates, whose life Plato attempted to save, putting his own in jeopardy. Plato's philosophy was aristocratic & utopian, based on educational attainment, not family status or wealth.

The comparison between Plato & Aristotle is quite memorable, articulate & almost poetic in nature. We are told that Aristotle's works come to be for European philosophy what the Bible was for theology--almost an infallible resource.

Proceeding forward, Durant includes a quote from Francis Bacon:

All the received systems are but so many stage-plays representing worlds of the their own creation after an unreal & scenic fashion, i.e. philosophic theater.

Bacon's utopia envisions a world led by scientists, not politicians and he compared Darwin's scientific explorations to Shakespeare. Bacon served as Lord-Chancellor in Britain while also developing his own philosophical concepts, hardly aloof from the world at large.

I found the coverage of Spinoza especially interesting. a twice exiled Jew (his people from Spain & Spinoza from his own synagogue in Amsterdam) who was a voracious reader & a gifted scholar. Spinoza was called a "God-intoxicated man" and declared that:

the goal of philosophy was to find unity in diversity, mind in matter & vice versa, to attain synthesis & rise to the highest knowledge of universal unity, which is the intellectual equivalent of the love of God.

In fact, there is a wonderful sense of synthesis with each philosopher Will Durant approaches, always gauging the humanity beneath the particular philosophy.


Judging Immanuel Kant, the reader is told that the glory of "The Critique of Pure Reason" lay in in its appreciation of multiple points of view, with "diverse religions & philosophies but changing garments of one eternal truth." Durant then intones that ultimately the brilliant Kant "began to wither into childlike senility, quietly & naturally like a leaf falling from a tree."

The author seemed to have an Olympian grasp of how a philosopher's life & times affected his worldview, appraising the zeitgeist, including art & music, translating all aspects into a coherent philosophy. Perhaps most importantly, Durant's ability with language is quite remarkable.


Labeling Durant's The Story of Philosophy a "history of philosophers", rather than a more expansive review of their philosophies would not be completely wrong but he does quite definitely blend the two.

Beyond everything else, Durant had a keen ability to synthesize philosophical schools & trends, social changes & developments in science & art, within the particular philosophies represented in his masterful book.

ویل دورانت محقق خیلی برجسته ای بوده و در این کتاب هم تاریخ فلسفه رو خیلی خوب جمع آوری کرده... در کتاب تاریخ فلسفه ویل دورانت نظریات مجموعه ای از فیلسوفهای تاثیرگذار رو در موردشون نوشته... خوبی کتاب به این هست که نقل قولهای مستقیمی از کتابهای فیلسوف ها داره و این کمک می کنه به اینکه خواننده نظرات خاص خودش رو هم داشته باشه.
به نظر من ویل دورانت در نوشتن این کتاب دقت خیلی زیادی کرده و وقتی که در مورد نظرات فیلسوف ها صحبت میکنه کاملا سعی می کنه بی طرف باشه و در انتهای هر بخش یه قسمتی با عنوان انتقاد داره که نظرهای فیلسوف ها رو نقد کرده.
این کتاب به نظر من کتاب خیلی خوبی بود و خوندنش رو به کسایی که به فلسفه علاقمند هستن توصیه می کنم... کتابهای دنیای سوفی و ماجراهای جاودان در فلسفه (نقدش رو نوشتم) در اصول کلی شبیه به کتاب تاریخ فلسفه ویل دورانت هستند ولی کتاب دنیای سوفی و کتاب ماجراهای جاودان در فلسفه در حد ابتدایی و بیشتر در حد داستان فلسفه هستن و کتاب تاریخ فلسفه ویل دورانت محتوای فلسفی کاملتری داره.

Delightful, Compelling and involving.

In the adroit hands of Will Durant, that make even the most complicated system of thought accessible to the reader, the story of philosophy is an exciting trek into the realm of thought, from the ancient philosophers' school of Athens to modern philosophy. Durant breathes vivid life into his most influential philosophers (which include Plato, Aristotle, Bacon, Spinoza, Voltaire, Kant (with a nod to Hegel), Schopenhauer, Spencer, Nietzsche, Bergson, Croce, Russell, Santayana, William James and John Dewey)by describing the progression of their thoughts through careful comparison and contrast, introducing the economic, social and intellectual environments before even he introduces the philosopher in order to place the individuals and their ideas firmly in context of the intellectual sweep of their time.

The author also gives each philosopher a position in reference to one another, thus linking all the diverse realm of thought together. Concluding each chapter with a summary and criticism of the major ideas of each philosopher.

The reader should bear in mind that one cannot interpret and present philosophy as it is for any author in the realm of philosophy without himself having his own bias and Durant is no exception, while his admiration for the works of Plato, Spinoza and Santayana are obvious, others had to pay for a less shorter presentation, more criticism or a total absence.


The book will serve as a first-rate introduction to anyone who never took an introductory philosophy course and as a pleasant refresher for those who had, therefore, providing a framework from which the reader can expand into other works.
