Divide Theory: A Layer Deeper (Mirror Book 2) by Sonya Deulina Williams is a sci fi/fantasy adventure that picks up where Book 1 left off and runs way further than I ever thought this series could go. The story takes the exploration of the first book and multiplies it by adding another level of depth: new characters, new situations, new problems, and a lurking enemy the main characters don’t even realize they have. The characters are fantastic and really drove the main plot points, especially with the two worlds element. It felt like a much different approach than the first and was fresh and new in building upon what Williams laid out in the first. But the great thing about this book is that you don’t have to have read the first to jump into this one: It’s easy to get into right away and definitely should be on your list.
The connection between worlds has grown much more than just between Sarah and Sam. It’s a phenomenon that is going on all over the world, and everyone has another “pair” in the other world. There is now an Institute that studies this and a new threat. I loved the addition of a political angle. The conspiracy and the intrigue really kept the book interesting, and the action scenes were fantastic. I just loved how the book built on so much of what Williams initially created and took off in this wild ride of a story.
The characters were awesome, and I loved the new additions. Sarah and Sam were perfect together as always, but I felt like I got to see a different layer between the two of them that I didn’t see in the first book. It was quite awesome. The story is fast-paced and pulls you right in. I liked how you didn’t need to have read the first book to jump right into the story because there is so much new stuff going on. The best parts were the intrigue and the global scale of the problem, but the story still stayed character-driven. That’s some great storytelling right there.
Overall, Divide Theory: A Layer Deeper is a fun yet deep read that makes you think. Just focusing on the two worlds is interesting enough, but Williams adds the political intrigue and action that takes the book up a notch. The characters were strong, and the plot was solid. I enjoyed the main thematic elements, though I don’t want to get into it because it would be some big spoilers. I would definitely give this book five stars. If you are looking for a different type of sci-fi book that’s thoughtful and asks tough questions, I would highly recommend this book.
I absolutely LOVED this second book! It was clear from the first page that Sonya Williams spent a lot of time developing the story and characters for this final installment. I enjoyed getting to know the characters even better and could not put the book down. I feel like there have been many book series that I have read where the first book is better and subsequent books in the series never quite hold up to the initial book - that is not the case here. While I thoroughly enjoyed reading Mirrors and being introduced to the dual worlds of Sam and Sarah, Divide Theory was even more fun to read. I connected so much to the two protagonists that I am still thinking of them, even though I finished reading. That is how I know that these books are wonderful - they don't leave my mind for a while. It would not surprise me to see both books made into movies. I would definitely recommend the series to anyone who loves a good story! Maybe I can hope for a spin-off story?
It's been a little while since I read this one, but I forgot to post a review, so here goes...
This sequel to Mirrors revisits the idea of everybody having a double in a parallel universe and takes things even farther with more people awakening and developing their awareness of this connection. We see a grand paranoid conspiracy at the highest levels of government and beyond. It's sort of like a technothriller, but the technology involved is human consciousness. Dreampunk for sure. Very nicely done!
