Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.

James Bowen is an author and musician currently based in London. He is author of A Street Cat Named Bob, which tells his life story.

James Bowen was born in Surrey in 1979. Following his parents’ divorce, he moved to Australia with his mother and stepfather. Home life was tense and, because the family moved frequently, James was unsettled at school. He was frequently bullied, and began sniffing glue while still in education, becoming a self-confessed “tearaway kid” who would later be diagnosed with ADHD, schizophrenia and manic depression. In 1997 he returned to the UK and lived with his half-sister, but this arrangement did not last; in time, he became homeless and began sleeping on the streets. From this point, James spent almost 10 years either sleeping rough or staying briefly in charity-run shelters; it was during this time that he began to use heroin in an attempt to escape the realities of homelessness.

In Spring 2007, James was enrolled on a methadone programme, busking in Covent Garden, and living in sheltered accommodation in Tottenham. One evening he returned home to find a ginger cat in the hallway of his building; assuming it belonged to another resident, he simply returned to his flat. When the cat was still there the following day, and the day after that, James became concerned and discovered the cat was wearing no collar or ID tag, and had an infected wound on his leg. James checked with other residents to see if the stray belonged to any of them, and when none of them claimed ownership of the animal James decided to help the cat himself.

He took the cat to a nearby veterinary surgery run by an animal charity, which provided antibiotics to treat the infected wound. In order to make sure he received the full two-week course of medication, James decided to take him in for a time while he continued to look for the stray’s owner. When he couldn’t find any information, he released the cat back on to the street, hoping he’d find his own way home. Instead, he began to follow James around, even following him onto the bus when he left to go busking. Concerned that the cat had nowhere else to go, James took him in on a permanent basis, naming him Bob after a character from the television drama Twin Peaks.[3]

Since Bob seemed keen to accompany James to work, he constructed a harness from shoelaces and began to bring him along to his regular spots in Covent Garden and Piccadilly, travelling in the window seat of the number 73 bus. The public reaction was positive and the pair became popular, their visibility increasing still further when James began selling the Big Issue. Soon the public began uploading videos of James and Bob to YouTube, and tourists from across the world would visit Covent Garden to see them. During this time, James decided to withdraw the methadone treatment; he credits his success to Bob, saying “I believe it came down to this little man. He came and asked me for help, and he needed me more than I needed to abuse my own body. He is what I wake up for every day now... he’s definitely given me the right direction to live my life.”

In time, James and Bob’s public appearances attracted the attention of Mary Pachnos, the literary agent responsible for the UK rights to John Grogan’s Marley and Me, who secured the pair a book deal with the publishers Hodder & Stoughton after she heard their story. The book was co-written by Garry Jenkins, and since its publication has sold over 250,000 copies, been translated into 22 languages and spent over 45 weeks at the top of the Sunday Times’ bestseller list in both its hardback and paperback format.

As of November 2012, two further books were at the planning stage - a follow-up to A Street Cat Named Bob, and a version of the book for children.

WHY

Feel good books just make me cry!!!!

James Bowen didn't have the greatest of lives growing up, I'm not sure why, but his parents didn't really notice him and kept putting him into mental institutions. This eventually let to drug abuse and homelessness.

Sometimes something comes into your life and drags you out of the bad stuff.. and that something doesn't have to be in the form of a human being...

 :

It can be in the form of a sweet animal, and in James case it was Bob. He found Bob who was hurt and he got him fixed up. They were friends from then on. Bob helped him get money selling his homeless magazine "The Big Issue" and just being a friend.

It was the sweet stories of kindness that people gave him and Bob at Christmas by purchasing his magazines and giving him money in cards that just made me cry. They helped him get the heat back on for him at Bob at Christmas so they wouldn't freeze in their own flat. They helped James be able to get small gifts for his best friend Bob and Belle.

 :

And then when James went and bought Christmas cards with some of the money to give to the people that always bought his magazines and helped see him rise from a drug addict... I cried some more. James also gave money to some homeless people on the street that were trying to make it doing the same type of thing in the freezing cold.

Bob and James started their own form of Pay It Forward and I thought it was wonderful and so humbling. It made me think so many good things. God Bless everyone out there that has any kind of problem and are getting help in any way shape or form.

I wasn't aware that the suprise hit A Street Cat Named Bob was getting a sequel, let alone being released this month - the impact of the Coronavirus has seen this head straight to streaming services (along with a limited theatrical release).

This tie-in edition was originally published as A Gift From Bob depicts the life of former street vendor James Bowen over Christmas.

This poignant tale certainly reflects the potential loneliness for the less fortunate, just a small token of kindness can go a long way - fortunately James had companionship with his cat Bob.

Theres a nice array of antidotes as James reflects back to what might have been as addiction is more prevalent at this time of year, learning exactly how The Big Issue works is one of the most interesting aspects from this book.
From the pre-Christmas rush to the near deserted London on the 25th, it's a fine balance to make ends meet with selling the magazine and busking.

Of course Bob is a big hit on the streets in his seasonal outfit, the amount of people stopping to take pictures and smile helps show kindness towards James plight.
With many overspending on unnecessary items, the simple message of being kind and thoughtful to others is what the real spirit of Christmas should be.

*
“Bob was by far the most intelligent and resourceful cat I’d ever encountered. Our time together on the streets of London had been eventful but also hugely cathartic. Each day it seemed like he gave me direction, purpose, companionship and, well, a reason to smile.”
- James Bowen

* * *
Eu associava o Natal a tristeza e solidão.”
*
“There’s an old saying that ‘Christmas isn’t a season, it’s a feeling’. I’m sure it’s true. For most people that feeling is one of almost childish joy. Whether it’s the sheer excitement and anticipation of Christmas Eve or the warmth of the laughter around the table at Christmas dinner, that feeling is what makes it the happiest time of their year.
For the first thirty or so years of my life, the feeling Christmas stirred in me was very different. I mostly associated it with sadness and loneliness.”
- James Bowen

* * *
Proporcionava-me o afeto, o companheirismo e - sim - o amor que há tanto tempo me fazia falta.
*
“And so it was that we had become inseparable. In many ways we were an odd couple but in others we were two peas in a pod, a pair of lost souls trying to survive day-to-day life in London. I also felt like he was my family. He provided the kindness and companionship and, yes, love that I’d craved for so long. He’d even given me the prospect of a new kind of life, one that just might get me off the streets.”
- James Bowen

* * *
*
“Until Bob had come along I’d been a hopeless cause. I’d wasted so many chances it was ridiculous. I was probably extremely lucky to be alive, such was the abuse I subjected my body to during my darkest days. The fact that I could now appreciate and enjoy a Christmas like this was just one of the blessings Bob had bestowed upon me. It was part of the even greater gift he had given me, probably the most wonderful one I’d ever received. Bob had given me a new life, a new life that was full of happiness and hope.”

A very moving, sweet and yet sad, true story based on the life of the author, James Bowen and Bob the cat whom he rescued, and who, in turn, rescued James. The gift of love and acceptance were all that Bob had to give, and Bowen himself had little to offer in terms of palatial lodgings, or fancy cuisine. For a while, just keeping ahead of the heat shutting off in his small apartment was a struggle, as well as simple, cheap meals. There were no luxuries, and Bowen had to struggle for them both to make a way through life and make enough money for that day by playing his guitar for a dollar here and there, even during freezing days and nights on the streets. While it may be true that Bowen had made some questionable lifestyle choices which landed him in this situation, he had worked hard to change his lifestyle and succeeded in living a substance-abuse free life. And then Bob came along and gave Bowen incentive to create a better life for them both, wanting it perhaps more for Bob than for himself. There’s a saying that goes something like, Angels don’t always have wings, sometimes they have whiskers and paws. Bob was that kind of angel who not only showed Bowen the way, but gave him a reason to give, and receive, love, and truly believe in himself again, or maybe for the first time.

In a year when we have had so much more distress between COVID, political unrest, toilet paper shortages, and a contested Presidential election, this put it all in perspective.

Many thanks to my friend Melissa who pointed the way to this story of hope, and love. Please check out her review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I am a huge fan of James and Bob and couldn’t resist this Christmas edition.

If you haven’t read any of the other books yet it isn’t a problem as James goes over the basics of what you need to know with out it feeling repetitive for readers who have read them. It easily reads as a stand alone and if your looking for a read that has a deeper meaning of Christmas than just money and presents then look no further.

Through James and Bob we get to see what life is like for people living on the streets at the coldest time of the year. This book sees James slightly better off than those on the streets but even then he is still struggling to make ends meet and provide him and Bob with heat, electric and food in their small flat.

If anything this book really brought home to me about what Christmas is all about. It’s not about the receiving but the giving and the fact that some of the people that are giving have very little themselves was totally humbling.

James and Bob are just an amazing duo and deserve all the success that has happened to them. Goes to show a mans best friend isn’t always a dog!

An inspiring and humbling read.

Everyone needs a bit of happiness, especially on Christmas. Okay, it isn't Christmas, but that doens't mean a person can't read this book, right?
So, let's say, that everyone needs a bit of happiness, mostly, when they at least expect it. I've read James' other book: 'a streetcat named Bob' and this one is a book on a specific periode of Bob's and James' life: Christmas and the days before it.
I've read somewhere that humans choose dogs and that cats choose their human and this prooves it again: Bob came at the perfect time to save James' life. I think without Bob he wouldn't be able. With the help of his fury little friend James got himself and his life back in order.
Again, a living proof that the bond with an animal can be special and life-changing.

A Gift from Bob ; "How a street cat helped one man learn the meaning of christmas."

"Time spend with cats is never wasted"

               -Siegmund Freud-

"I could never be cross with him for doing this. How could I? The fact that this handsome face was the first thing I saw each day was a blessing. Even if, like today,  it was wearing an expression that said, Come on, Lazy bones. I should have had my breakfast half an hour ago." -blz.72-

"I couldn't help shaking my head at the changes that had come over me. A few years ago there would be no way I'd have done anything as sensible as this. I'd have blown that money on drugs. But now, I had a different perspective on life. I also had someone else to take care for." - blz.89-

Bob is echt gewéldig! Ik hou ervan!

A gift from Bob is een must read en must have voor elke feel good liefhebber, het is een heerlijk waargebeurd kerstverhaal en mag dan ook niet ontbreken in de boekenkast van elke kattenliefhebber.

This little novella was exactly as good as I hoped it would be. Running at just 192 pages, it was a quick read and my only complaint is that it wasn’t long enough.

This is the third book about the relationship that’s formed between James and his cat, Bob, who he met one night on the stairs in his block of flats. There’s a fourth book, but it’s a children’s book that depicts James and Bob’s friendship through pictures, but I’m not such an ardent fan that I’ve gone as far as picking that up!

When James met Bob, he was at a difficult point in his life due to drugs and homelessness, but Bob the cat helped him learn what’s important in life through his unique viewpoint. I know it probably sounds like a bit of an exaggeration that a cat can turn someone’s life around, but it’s a really heart-warming story that’s about so much more than just a man and his cat. James used to live rough on the streets of London, so the reader gets a glimpse into that life as he recounts the time. He’s also trying to establish his business of selling the Big Issue, which is a magazine made specifically for struggling members of the community to sell on the streets. The hope is that, vendors who sell the Big Issue, will learn how to make a living and get on a better track in life. If you want to pick the first book in the series up, which I’d strongly suggest, you can find it here A Street Cat Named Bob (Amazon US). You don’t need to read the series from the start though; that’s not important at all, although it will add to your understanding.

The second book in the series is a continuation of James and Bob’s time together and lets us know a bit more about their relationship and how the sale of their first book impacted their lives. An excellent book, but the top spot still goes to the first one in the series, mainly because it described the part of James’s life that held the most interest for me.

This novella is about the last Christmas that James and Bob spent together before their lives changed due to the first book being published. Obviously, it’s really timely, so it’s a great time of year to pick it up. And like I said, no need to read the other two. You can start with this book and you won’t feel lost at all.

It was another story that made me feel the same way as the first two. Of course it’s filled with clique lines and observations, but who cares!? It’s not the best written book either, but James was so honest and frank about his life that I couldn’t help but love him. And of course Bob the cat too! James is the star in these books though and a great one. He let me into his life wholeheartedly and ended up feeling like my friend.

Some might say that James and Bob have had long enough in the spotlight and should probably step back and to an extent that’s right, but if people buy the books and love them, I fail to see where the harm is.

Reread:
PODCAST is here :)
In this touching story, James Bowen recalls the last Christmas he was to spend on the streets, busking and selling the Big Issue with his cat Bob, before his life changed forever.
In 2010, the weather was as bleak as his prospects. Now at least he had Bob by his side - but his health was bad and he had no money for food or warmth.
What James learned through this toughest of times was to give his new life with Bob - and Christmas - a meaning it had never had before.

Reread and I still have the same feelings about the book as before, kind and warm story about a friendship between 'hooman' and his cat :)
James and Bob are charming as always, recreating a real-life story, where every one of us can learn something. Not just about Christmas (or Easter, if you are reading it as me, at this time of year) but as well about ourselves and our approach to life. With a comparison to Dickens's story of the Christmas carol and adding his own part, the story is easy to read and enjoy. Read and enjoy in the circle of those you love... is my advice ;)

First sentence: It was still a few weeks before Christmas but inside the swish hotel near Trafalgar Square the party was already in full swing.
Last sentence: I was going to treasure that gift, not just this Christmas, but for as long as remained together.
Goodreads Challenge 2023: 25. book
**************************************
Perfect read not only for Christmas time. For anyone who needs a bit of warmth.

And yes, I got this after reading Street Cat named Bob so I just browsed some pages and order the second part and this one too :) and another yes, I read it in one go afternoon I got it and settled into my rocking chair with a cup of tea and my own tomcat next to me :)

what to say last, I can't wait to lay my hands on the last book when it will arrive.

This Book was fairly predictable but never the less charming in its way. There was an improvement in the. Actual writing so I presume the proof reading was more exacting than previous books. The Scrooge theme was a little too corny and at times the writing got a bit surgery sweet. The encounter James had with an old drug dealer and his memories of sleeping on the streets at Christmas were interesting and showed what a battle a recovering drug addict goes through each day to stay clean. I hope In buying this book it contributes a little towards a better quality of life for James and Bob . I hope that he is able to build and strengthen his resolve to fight drugs and carry on the talks against drug use , he has begun in schools and with the animal charities Bob supports. =^^=

Inhalt:

A Gift from Bob is a Christmas-themed volume of James Bowen's adventures with Bob the Cat. The writing is relatively simple in places, but it is the story and the wonder of Bob which is the main focus; here, he is just as clever and full of character as in A Streetcat Named Bob. My particular favourite chapter dealt with the way in which Bob rearranges the Christmas tree with his paws if it isn't to his liking, and also flicks off any of the baubles which he dislikes. A quick and heartwarming read.

What's it about?

"A Gift From Bob" continues where "A Streetcat Named Bob" and "The World According To Bob" finished; telling the story of James and Bob's journey together. In this memoir, James looks back at the last Christmas he and Bob spent scraping a meager living on the streets and how Bob helped him through one of his toughest times - providing strength, friendship and inspiration but also teaching him important lessons about the true meaning of Christmas along the way.

Who's the author?

James Bowen is a musician and author currently based in London. After a tough start in life, James found himself sleeping rough and using heroin to escape the harsh realities of living on the streets. In 2007, James was enrolled on a methadone programme, began busking in Covent Garden and living in sheltered accommodation in Tottenham. One evening he returned home to find an injured ginger cat in his hallway. When no one in the building claimed ownership of the cat, James sought treatment for Bob at the local vet and nursed him back to health before taking him in on a permanent basis. Bob became a regular sight out and about in London with James and attracted a crowd when James was busking or selling The Big Issue. Approached by a literary agent, James wrote "A Streetcat Named Bob;" the story of his life before and after Bob. Shortly after, James wrote a sequel; "The World According to Bob," continuing the story of how Bob changed his life. "A Gift From Bob" is the third book from James Bowen. "A Streetcat Named Bob" spent over 45 weeks at the top of the Sunday Times bestselling list in both hardback and paperback format.

Was it any good?

Definitely! I read the first two books last year, before I started this blog, and loved both. This third book is no different. It's a fantastically poignant novel, full of emotions, hope and love. Although the book focuses on James' life with Bob, it serves to illustrate the things we take for granted and what's really important, especially at Christmas. It's a book with a message behind it, and it's a message that will stay with you long after you've put the book back on the shelf. All three of these books are ones I can't wait to share with my family and friends, and intend to keep on my shelf for years to come. They are worth all the hype around them, and then some!

Would you recommend it?

Yes - to everyone! I defy anyone to read any one of James Bowen's books and not love them!

Onneksi näitä oikean elämän satuja on olemassa! Luin suomeksi nimellä Bobin joulu.

This book contains a lot of stuff found in the author's other books so if you hadn't read them then it's fine. This one is set during Christmas and jumps around to other Christmas's he experienced to explain why he is a scrooge and how Bob slowly has changed how he feels about the holidays.

Riktigt mysig julbok!
