Two hot roommates, minus clothes, plus a drawer full of debauchery, and a WHOLE lot of tension. You don’t have to be a math genius to figure out the sum of that equation.
They say I’m a super genius, but would a super genius make the outrageously stupid mistake of falling for his roommate? Out of all the men in the world, I had to go and develop a crush on the one who’s already in love with his best friend.
But when Theo tells me he found my drawer of toys, the only logical thing to do is to offer some no-strings fun. I’ve read enough romance novels to know this can’t possibly end well, but I can’t seem to stop myself from falling for Theo. The only question is…
Will he be there to catch me?
***By the Numbers is a low-angst roommates to lovers to HEA story with plenty of heat and lots of swoony moments. It’s the third book in the Love Logic series but can be read as a stand alone.
K.M.Neuhold has long since been a romance junkie. When she’s not writing she’s reading or spending time snuggling with her husky or her husband. She fell in love with M/M romance last year and hasn’t been able to turn back. There’s nothing she loves more than love in all its forms.
As someone who enjoys and reads a lot of K.M. Neuhold, I have to say that By the Numbers isn't her best effort.
First of all, this book is fap-central. I mean, masturbation for daaaaaays. If you want to read a book where the majority is spent with the characters not communicating with one another and stealing each other's sex toys, then this book might be for you.
I got tired with the story around the 50% mark. It wasn't offensive, but I was seriously impatient with it. Just scene after scene with them dancing around each other. I contemplated DNF-ing multiple times.
I thought I would love this story. A fluffy, high steam book with GEEKS! What could go wrong?? Apparently, a number of things, if the author gets in her own way.
Look, this story isn't bad, but it didn't satisfy my itch for a steamy treat. WHERE IS MY STEAMY TREAT? It sucks to say, but this was just very bland.
While the first book remains my favorite, I liked Theo and Alex a great deal. Alex plays up the "big nerd with glasses" image and attracts men like flies. The problem is that sleeping around has stopped being satisfying. I mean, one-night stands don't cuddle, and cuddling is the best.
When his roommate and friend Theo suggests helping each other out (euphemism for let's be friends who fuck), Alex agrees. Commence kinky dildo play and other very sexy exploration.
But it's not just sex. It's fun and games too. Since his mother constantly pushed him to be the very best academically, Alex missed out on so much as a kid.
Theo wants Alex to have it all, so he recreates slumber parties, nerf gun fights, and blanket forts. He even teaches Alex to ride a bike. Gah. It's all so damn wholesome.
The problem comes down to a lack of communication. Alex may be a genius, but he's still only 19. He thinks Theo is still pining for Elijah (even though Elijah and Pax are madly in love). And Theo .... well, I'm not sure what his deal was honestly, but he does finally initiate the Big Conversation. Hallelujah!
The last chapter, set a few years in the future, made my heart happy. This is very much a feel good story, and I quite enjoyed it.
Note: My ARC contained quite a few typos, but I'm not down rating for that because I didn't read the final, fully proofed version.
Ridiculously hot and also still really sweet and uplifting.
This is Pax's brother Theo's story and it was interesting to see the progression from him realising he wasn't actually in love with Elijah to being totally aware of his feelings for actual genius Alex.
I loved Alex, he's never had the chance to be a normal child or experience anything fun just for the sake of it. He's a literal genius, at college studying for a PhD even though he's not yet 20, and he's following a path he isn't really sure he wants.
Sex is his distraction tool, and he uses his nerdy persona to the max to get some semblance of normality.
That is, until Theo starts to offer him not only his friendship, but also insights into what it would be like to live a 'normal' life doing something he truly loves.
This book has one of the most intense sex scenes I've read, which I won't spoil, but it was perfectly written to skilfully skirt the line between the insane hotness and the element of potentially stepping over a line (don't worry it's not a taboo or extreme kink.
I loved it!
#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.
I don't have a lot of reading time these days, and this one just isn't holding my interest. Just never really felt much of a connection to either MC really.
It’s surprising I managed to finish this book. The romance was kinda cute, but boring and predictable. Roommates to friends with benefits to boyfriends.
But the thing that really didn’t work for me and almost had me GTFO and not return was this one scene. Theo and Alex are roommates. Theo finds himself in Alex’s room, and snoops around and finds Alex’s toys.
“I would have to ask; is it more of a violation to use someone else’s sex toy in their own bed? Or is fucking myself with Alex’s dildo already so far over the line that I’ve maxed out the violation, thus leaving his bed as fair game?”
And I’m like WTF is wrong with you???? I skimmed through that scene and was never able to connect with the romance afterwards, and especially with Theo.
And even without that scene, it would be 3 stars. I didn’t connect with them, and I didn’t really feel much. The whole thing with Elijah felt like fake drama. I don’t know.

This was cute enough. I don’t really have any strong feelings one way or the other beyond that. It was nice to catch up with Bishop and his guys from book two and Elijah and Pax from book one. I may have to reread those in the near future.
Sweet and sexy story about two roommates deciding to try celibacy because they both use sex as a way to feel less lonely and then deciding to try a friends with benefits arrangement together. What could go wrong, right?
It turns out, nothing. Everything went according to plan except for the part where they forgot to leave the feeling outside of the arrangement. But since both of them forgot, it was a win-win situation.
Theo is in love with his best friend who also, recently, became his brother's boyfriend, so if he wants to keep them both in his life he has to learn how to be okay with seeing them together.
Alex is an extemely smart guy, working on a PhD that he finds ridiculously easy and doesn't interest him in the slightest, just because he thinks that's the path he has to take in his life.
They have mutual friends so they end up sharing a house and as they get to know each other they become friends.
By the Numbers is a low-angst, cute story and there are no big surprises when it comes to the plot. It's a light read for when you want to feel good and relax.
There's one scene, before they got together, that made me extremely uncomfortable and I had to skip it altogether - I won't spoil it, you'll understand which one I'm talking about when you read it - but other than that it was an enjoyable read.
An ARC of this book was kindly provided to me in exchange for an honest review.
I have been excited about Theo and Alex, since we first net them in Rocket Science and I totally adored this book!!
Having a crush on someone in love with his best friend? Bad idea. Adding sex to the mix? Worse. Falling in love with him? The worst.
I love the chemistry between Alex and Theo, how Alex is so open with him and doesn't try to put up his usual façade. This is third book in the series and can be read as a standalone. But I'd recommend reading the first book at least to get a richer experience, especially because Elijah is Theo's best friend.
I really enjoyed By the Numbers and if you're looking for a feel good story with high steam and a sexy dildo collection, cute sarcastic nerd, and science punny T-shirts, definitely pick this up! Hopefully Holden's book is next 'cause like Alex, I definitely ship the hot tattooed baker and the nerdy botany professor!

I was inclined to give this book a 3.5 but rounded up to 4 because of top drawer adventures.
Alex and Theo, both smart, both in denial, both hopelessly gone on each other. Sweet characters without a clue.
This was a laid back kind of story. Mellow, concentrating on the emotions of two men falling in love. Excellent writing (as always). The author infuses her men with everyday doubts and gives them the tools to solve the puzzle called love. She will always be an auto buy for me.
The first book in this series remains the best. I’ll keep reading this author in the hopes we’ll reach those heights again. Alex is sweet and lovely and his road to happiness is nice to read. Theo, on the other hand, did not strike me as a fully formed character. We know how Alex ended up in his program and what brings him joy but aside from having thought himself in love with Elijah, I didn’t get much of a sense of Theo at all. Why psychology? What are his aspirations? We don’t really know anything about him except in relation to other characters. Also, this is one of those books where the epilogue is just WTF. We jump ahead 4 years to learn that a teacher and a support worker are comfortably settled into the house they bought a year ago. They live in California. Alex is 23. How on earth are a 2nd year teacher and a non-profit worker buying a house? Where? How? I know it’s a minor footnote to a book but I find this type of departure from logic and what is possible to be so jarring. It just feels sloppy. Like, oops, forgot to write the epilogue and have to send this one off. Okay, done. Finally, this is my own thing but I’m not a fan of masturbation scenes. I don’t find them sexy and I don’t want to read pages and pages of someone jerking off or playing with toys. Maybe this is a familiarity breeding contempt thing but masturbation scenes are very boring to me. This book starts with two. Blegh.

By the Numbers is the third book in K.M. Neuhold’s sweet and sexy Love Logic series. Plot-wise this story stands alone, but we meet both Theo and Alex in previous books, and characters from earlier stories appear here, so I think you will enjoy it most if you have read the others. This is such a good series, it is definitely worth giving them all a read.
The book plays with some classic tropes in the roommates-with-benefits storyline, but I think Neuhold does a nice job adding other elements that give some more depth.
4.5 stars I was excited about this pair since we met them in Rocket Science. Theo has moved from New York to California to be closer to his longtime best friend and crush, Elijah, and his big brother, Pax...even though he was shocked to see them fall in love with each other. He moves in with Elijah's university friend, Alex, and becomes part of their extended friend group.
Alex is a younger genius and aerospace engineering PhD student. He is cute, sarcastic, and easily distracted. He enjoys romance novels and quirky t-shirts. And he loves helping kids learn. But his own childhood was spent studying and missing out on fun things. His life is all planned out and has been forever due to his parents' influence.
Theo is also getting a PhD, but in psych. He is a caring, loyal, and thoughtful guy, but he is lonely. He is a bit jealous that his brother found love with the man he had feelings for, but can see how happy they are. But he craves to have someone important in his life as well.
After enjoying too many random hookups, both guys have decided that spending some time being celibate would be good for them, and are starting to become friends. Theo tries to help Alex catch up on fun he has missed and to live a little. But a look here, a touch there, and maybe a little kiss under the influence leads to them thinking...
How bad would it be to release some sexual tension with each other? Would someone catch feelings or get hurt? Is Theo still pining over Elijah? If only lust and love was as easy as following an equation.
This is a delightful, oh-so-steamy, new friends-to-roommates-to-lovers, M/M romance with just the right amount of angst and tension (and unique toys). I really liked both of these guys. They are just so adorable and a bit nerdy, but also have great chemistry. Even though Alex is younger and totally brilliant, he is not shy or inexperienced. He can hold his own. They are able to get through the other's defenses and see their full potential, but they do have some self-discovery and growing to do as well.
It brings back all of the friends we have met in the other books, but can be read as a stand-alone. I was happy to get more with darling Elijah and Pax, and Bishop and his guys, and Seph. There was a little hint at a possible story for a nerd and baker and I am here for it.
3.5 stars. Cute but with much more of an NA feel than the other two books in the series. Alex was an interesting character and Theo was adorable with all the ways he wanted Alex to explore the things he missed out on in his youth and the way he supported Alex in finding his true path in life. Theo was a bit underdeveloped in his own right though. The chemistry between the boys was scorching, but the love story felt a little easy and underwhelming. Overall this was an enjoyable read, but not my favourite in the series.
2.5 stars. I think this author is not for me sadly. I got this series as the box set so finished it up but don’t think I’ll be buying any more. I just don’t like the writing, the characters feel one-dimensional and the storyline flat. I kept having to check if I was reading Alex or Theo’s point of view and I couldn’t really discern between the two? I get they were both petite builds and nerdy and that Alex was messy and forgetful whilst Theo wasn’t but that was it. I feel bad not to have enjoyed it more. I think if I had read this early on in my reading journey I would have liked it but it’s maybe not to my tastes these days and I’ve read so many similar books that this just came across as rather underwhelming. Overall it was sweet, low-angst but forgetful.
This is super petty but as a health professional it absolutely killed me that they went to ED after he fell off the bicycle 🤦🏽♀️ aaaand what nineteen year old has such an extensive selection of sex toys?! I did have to google some things which was rather eye opening 😱
If you are looking for an easy breezy read, By the Numbers is a cute, funny, sexy, opposites, low/no angst, slow burn tale. Alex and Theo start out as roommates who evolve in to friends with benefits which in turn leads to something more organic in nature that neither Theo nor Alex expected or have any experience with. Alex, a literal genius, had an unconventional childhood. I absolutely loved how Theo gave him many firsts that he didn’t experience as a child and they were incredibly sweet moments. They are adorable together and their HEA left me with all the warm and fuzzies. However, I think the editing in this book could have been a bit tighter. The first half was a bit too slow for me with too many "what if" internal musings. It felt like everything plus the kitchen sink, in regards to MM, was thrown in as well. The story really gets going at about 55% and from there it is quintessential Kyleen. This book can be read as a standalone but I recommend you read Rocket Science first, an EXCELLENT story and a top read of all time for me, to get a better feel of the dynamics surrounding this story.
Watching Alex and Theo come together was like watching an awkward dance that makes no sense at first, but then the beat drops and it just hits! Both kept clinging to the idea that messing around with your roommate was a bad idea. There was such a push and pull between them that was utterly delightful to read.
Theo was so genuine and sweet. His mixed up feelings for Elijah just made me like him more. He was capable of such emotion but just had no outlet. Alex was adorkable and funny and sweet. I felt bad for him, with the expectations of his parents hanging over him all the time. It’s not easy being one of the smartest people in the room. Through his relationship with Theo, he finally begins to see that it’s not always about the expectation of others.
I really loved Theo and Alex together. Their chemistry was off the charts and the depth of feeling you can read on the page was stunning. The steamy scenes were super sexy and Alex’s “collection” was interesting to say the least. This series has just gotten better and better. I have my fingers crossed for a Jordy and Holden book, because I definitely ship that too, Alex. 😁
Bonus points for author working the term polycule into this books. I LOVE that! Highly recommend this addition to the series.
I was lucky enough to win an ARC of this book and I’m so happy I dug right into it.
With every book I read by this author, I kick myself for not trying her works earlier. By the Numbers is a fun, sexy, and flirty story that kept me in the best mood while reading it. This is the third in the Love Logic series but each book features a new couple and works as a standalone.
I really enjoyed Theo and Alex. They had an easy friendship that morphed into a relationship that was sweet and fairly uncomplicated. I especially liked that Alex didn’t fit the stereotypical nerd role. It gave the story a different spin and focus. I enjoyed seeing Alex’s personality come out as the book progressed, particularly while Theo provided the fun experiences Alex missed out as a youth and encouraged Alex to follow his dreams. Best of all, these two made me smile. They were adorable and likable, and I simply enjoyed reading about them.
I’d consider By the Numbers a low angst romance perfect for readers who appreciate uncomplicated love stories with good characters. I’d be remiss not to mention that By the Numbers includes some of the sexier scenes I’ve read in a while and, yet, it never felt overdone or gratuitous. I’d recommend this title to others looking for some light, sexy fun and will definitely be reading the other books from the series.
*** Copy provided to Bayou Book Junkie for my reading pleasure, a review wasn't a requirement. ***
I won an ARC of this sweet book. My very first ARC ever, and now my first review, which was not a requirement of winning the book.
I really enjoyed this story between Alex and Theo. By the Numbers is the third book in the Love Logic series. It’s a standalone, but characters from the two previous books appear in the book, since they are all part of the same group of friends.
It’s a low angst, roommates-to-lovers story of two young men. Alex is a 19 year-old math and physic genius doing is PhD. Despite having such brilliancy at such a young age, Alex is not socially inept or an awkward nerd. I appreciated that about him. As for Theo, I feel that I didn’t learn so much about him, except that he’s a great friend and is not afraid of sweet gestures.
It really was a fun read to start this year and a nice third book in the series.
You can read this book as a standalone, but fair warning, if you do, you'll just end up going back and reading the first two because these characters will draw you right into their world. Rocket Science is one of my favorite KM Neuhold books, and this one's pretty close to it.
These wonderful, funny, sexy, intelligent guys make my heart happy. And the toys! The toys are epic . There's just the right balance of story to pining, heartachy romance, and sex. Plus, it's just the right length for a quick, fun read.
While it isn't necessary to have read Love Logic 1 and 2, I'd certainly recommend reading Rocket Science (1) for context and also because it's great. Alex and Theo are roommates who both initially try celibacy having tired with hookups before attempting a friends with benefits situation. I'm so glad Alex got a book because he's a great character, and it was nice for Theo to get his HEA because he seemed so lost in Rocket Science
alex was truly so precious to me, i loved the whole "genius who doesnt want to be a genius" thing. he was under so much pressure and all he wanted to do was help kids love math!!!! my heart.
i really enjoyed his relationship progression with theo. i thought it was fun to see them go from just roommates to having feelings. it was a bit slow for me overall, i wish they got together sooner so there could have been more moments of them being domestic and cute. BUT i did love how theo was trying to give alex his childhood back, i wish there had been more but everything from riding a bike to the blanket fort was absolutely adorable. i think they were both really good for each other.
Note: I put off writing the reviews since January. I'm slowly catching up. So my memory will vary according to how long ago I read it and how impactful it was.
I remember some of it, but not enough or details.
It was a quick read. Not bad, a bit flat and quicker towards the end. Overall it was nice but not memorable or original enough though.
This book was pretty cute and had some steam for sure. It wasn’t spectacular but it wasn’t horrible, it was cute. A nice short read with some fun. I absolutely loved Alex’s love for obscure gay erotica and romance. That was a fun twist to the typical genius trope. Overall enjoyable, light, sweet.
“Does the sequence of events really matter? He can hold love in his heart for someone he’ll never have and find new love with someone else and neither has to be less than the other.” 💕
