What does it take to be the best? To become an exceptional?
The exceptionals are the few individuals who have achieved an unparalleled mastery in their field. They are the 1% of the 1%. They have reached seemingly unreachable heights. They may be athletes or entertainers who are household names, or they may be people who have invented life-saving drugs or won a Nobel Prize by making fundamental advances in knowledge. Or they may have changed the world through science or music or business by influencing millions or perhaps billions of lives.
They are the people who have succeeded in being able to draw out the best talents they have within themselves and have maximized the physical, mental, and social potential available to them.
The Exceptionals is their story, and it provides you with the blueprint to advance yourself from good to great—and from outstanding to elite.
Impressive read. Delivered more than what I expected.
This is a book which will tell you the difference between the rest and the excellent winners who shine in whatever they do. The content focus on how they do it, why they do it and most importantly how they maintain this consistency.
📌 Tips for reading this book:
✔️Take your time
✔️ If you can, read one page at a time. Then one chapter at a time. I promise you it will be worth it
✔️Make notes or annotate wherever it’s applicable according to your needs
There are parts which are applicable most appropriately for students and there are other parts which are more appropriate for the pros at what they do.
But I say try to take the best from both and try to apply wherever you can wherever you are.
I find the writing quite accessible and easy to follow. There’s an undeniable voice in the writing. There’s this urge to tell you it will be worth it when you listen to this voice.
Also, I find the references and the footnotes quite helpful and relevant.
•You can't become the best in your field if you only excel at certain moments.•
Well, it's one of the best nonfiction read that I read this month. We all need a Lil push, a reminder to not give up, and this is one such book that will not let you give up.
As the name says, The Exceptionals by ( @kumarmehta_author ) Kumar Mehta is an inspiring read that motivates us to give our best in everything we do.
As the cover says, How the best became the best and how you can too, the author shares examples of inspiring personalities, how they succeeded in being able to draw the best talents within themselves.
Read it a bit slow, understand the concept, the author shares about how we can advance ourselves in life. I liked how he explained each concept in a well-detailed manner, giving us clarity.
From explaining the elements of excellence and explaining each element in-depth to the myth of the solo superstar and many other topics, the author gives us a reality check.
It's a well-researched and well-organised book. The simplicity in the writing style of the author and his powerful words does the magic. He made it easier to understand with the help of charts, examples and listings. I enjoyed reading examples, the journey of individuals.
One can achieve everything they want in life, all you need is to not give up on your dream and focus on achieving your possible best every day.
Overall, It's an interesting read that will inspire each one of us.
The Exceptionals by Kumar Mehta is about the 0.1% of people who reach incredible heights and prove their mettle in their field of interest. This rare breed of humans goes on to exhibit how they maximize the physical, mental, and emotional potential to be the best.
The book essentially chalks out the blueprint to go from good to great in life. It discusses the case studies of excellent individuals such as Phelps, Usain Bolt, etc. and shares how they went about achieving envious success. These people worked hard to become exceptional and leave an indelible imprint on the world.
The book breaks down the characteristics of outstanding individuals who achieved sustained excellence: - innate abilities - environment - belief - teamwork - microexcellence - focus - intense effort - dream big
I like how the author has been very precise with his content in this book. It talks about the focal point i.e. to become exceptional and sticks to it till the end.
The writing is lucid and comprehensible and there is some solid research done before piecing together this book. It was an enriching experience for me to read The Exceptionals for it not just motivated me but provided me valuable insights to march ahead in life.
If you are new to non-fiction, looking for some juicy and crispy motivating read, do check out this book.
I can't think of a subject or area that I care to work to try to be the very best in the world, but I was curious about this book anyway, and it still gave me value on the subject of improvement. The topic is well researched and packs a lot of information into a small book. It was quite interesting, and kind of motivating as well. It definitely made me feel like high goals really *can* be achieved (with lots of advice on how to go about it). I think a great many people could benefit from reading this in a general sense, but it would, of course, be most useful to the ones already determined to become the best of the best in their field.
Have you ever wondered what the 1% of the exceptionals have in them that makes them unparalleled masters in their disciplines?
In 'The Exceptionals', Kumar Mehta makes a humble attempt to analyze and break down into accessible language the code of these exceptionals.
Mehta begins the book with his determined belief that every human being has a field either explored or unexplored that he has the potential to excel in. He introduces the concept of sustained excellence which comes along with innate ability, intense consistent effort and enabling factors. The author or rather I'd say the mentor expertly directs the readers attention to almost all the essential elements that are quintessential for success in life.
The Exceptionals is a non-fiction that leaves a mark not only because of the straightforward approach it takes dealing with facts and popular examples/ anecdotes we can look up to but also with quotes that deeply motivates you.
Here goes my favourite :
We often talk about achieving our personal best. That is a backward looking statement because it means that we are trying to do somecthing better than we previously have. Being excptional transcends the notion of personal best and brings us to achieving our possible best, a focus on maximizing what you can achieve rather than doing something a little better than you did the last time.
Dreams don’t turn into reality with just magic. We have been brought up to believe that hard-work and determination are the keys to success. But is possessing these two qualities enough? Most certainly not! Using snippets from lives of Usain Bolt, Magnus Carlsen and et al, Kumar Mehta has laid before us the complete methodology behind achieving the highest level of success.
These exceptional people, they always have a goal, right? They soldier on a set path. They strive to outbound their comfort zone. They are, in all good sense, deliberate over achievers. And though I appreciate the author’s admiration for these people, it got me wondering about the definition of ‘exceptional’.
Does only ‘being one in thousands’ entitle you to be called as exceptional? It’s sort of demotivating, for me at least. Truth be told, I don’t think there is anything special about me, and yet I like to think of myself as an exceptional kid. I have literally never done any out-of-the-world thing, but at least I carry out even the minimal tasks in my own sloppy way. For me, this is equivalent to being exceptional. I might be totally wrong. It is very much possible that I am calling myself exceptional because this book took a subtle dig at my ego. Tell me, do you think of yourself as exceptional?
Anyways, coming back to the book. If you are genuinely passionate about something and want to carve your career in that field, then go ahead and read this book. It’s crisp, captivating and candid. And since it’s self-help, you will definitely end up learning a lot!
Easy lecture with small stories from famous people. I already knew most of those stories so I wasn't captivated. Unfortunately, this book didn't offer me amazing tips and awesome motivation, as I expected. However, it was a nice reminder to continue on the good route.
I received this as an ARC to rate and review. This is my honest assessment.
The writing is straightforward, and new terms are defined nicely with appropriate illustrations. I found several passages, which I highlighted, giving a clear path to excelling in any field. Recommended reading for anyone seeking to improve their skills or desiring to mentor others. Even mentors can excel in their fields.
I really enjoyed the notion of this book, but I didn't inspire me to try to be exceptional as I wanted it to. Per the description "The Exceptionals is their story, and it provides you with the blueprint to advance yourself from good to great—and from outstanding to elite." As I listened to the audiobook, I learnied a lot about many very successful individuals, but rather than learning how those individuals became exceptional, it was hounded into the reader that those exceptional indivduals were born exceptional which is what gave them the greatest advantage. The author shares over and over and over again that 50% of what it takes to become exceptional is your genetics, 25% is how you are raised/your environment, and the remaining 25% is based on your work ethic. From reading this book, I've gathered that really and truly, the only thing that we have an impact on as individuals to become "exceptional" is the 25% that we put into it. The author also discussed that although it is important to become well rounded individuals, being well rounded won't provide the framework to becoming exceptional.
All in all, what I gathered from this book, was that if I am not already exceptional at something by the age of 27, I probably won't ever be and no matter how much effort I put into certain skill, I probably won't ever be exceptional.
The narrator did a great job and I enjoyed the writing, but the book didn't uplift me or teach me how to try to be exceptional as I wanted it to. It instead, taught me why I am not exceptional and why I won't ever be.
There are numerous people who we consider superior to others: Albert Einstein has become the epitome of intelligence, Steve Jobs is considered a visionary of unmatched talent just to name a few. But what really makes a successful person? In this book, Kumar Mehta examines the stories of several very successful people and comes up with some interesting conclusions.
In The Exceptionals, Kumar Mehta takes us on a journey through various times and people's lives to unearth a theory that is both humbling and insightful. It's not the brightest people who succeed – if you're successful, the results of your efforts are not just of your own making, but ultimately a product of the world in which you grew up. Kumar Mehta has a look at how our path is influenced by the circumstances we evolved from. We easily tend to relate one persons success to their intelligence and abilities, but fail to see that most of them underwent a long process of hard work.
This impressive book takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of 'exceptionals' - those at the top, the most famous, and the most successful. Kumar Mehta illustrates how they become exceptionals in response to factors like dedication, talent, personality, and opportunity all coming together in a synergistic mix to propel their success.
The Exceptionals is a well-researched subject put down to plausible conclusions through inductive reasoning. Kumar Mehta did a commendable job in bringing this subject of success into a logical paradigm that is both palatable and eye-opening. Above all, this book is really smoothly written and a joy to read. You’ll learn new things, you’ll get some more encouragement to keep practicing at whatever it is you want to achieve professionally or hobby-wise. And it might give you some conversation topics too.
The point of the book is not to explain away success stories. But rather it is to learn from these stories, and use this information to help everyone be more productive and successful. The author shows several instances where proactive steps were able to ameliorate the effect of negative cultural legacies. Kumar Mehta, with poignant examples and rational assessments, makes a tremendous case for a broader picture, one in which individual grit and tenacity are indeed a large part of success, but they are only one part.
The Exceptionals is well written and entertaining and at the same time informative and educational. This book gave me a new perception on how to see success. What make someone a super achievers have less to do with the smartness and more to do with the hunger of doing hard work for prolonged period of time. Citing case after fascinating case of successful people, Kumar Mehta's point becomes unforgettably clear: successful people are often talented, intelligent, and ambitious, yes, but these traits always converge with opportunities. Being in the right place at the right time. Hard work combined with opportunity is everything.
In The Exceptionals, Kumar Mehta delivers a thought-provoking, insightful analysis describing the nature of success and who rises to the top. Kumar Mehta seems to have a way with drawing out unseen and seen ideas of road to success. He helps his readers perceive familiar information in entirely new ways. Definitely recommend to those who are curious.

✨My Rating:-9.9/10
📚My Review:-I hope so you all are doing absolutely fine and healthy. The author Kumar Mehta has come up with an amazing book which will leave you craving for more. The book " The Exceptionals: How The Best Become The Best And How You Can Too " is a guide which teaches the readers about how to achieve exceptional performance and excellence. The author also shares some interesting fact about how to grow in life. This book is penned based on the many years of experience and observations. Excellence at something requires practice, repetition and volume, and this only happens with time. You need to log for hours to achieve a high degree of proficiency in something. Time is really a big factor, wasting it may lead to a great loss in your journey. The sooner you start the better you can be. The exceptionals is their story, and it motivates you to advance yourself from good to great, and from outstanding to elite. The author explains the readers taking examples of few great personalities which makes it easy to relate. Everyone is born with some or the other ability. It's just that we need to recognise it and focus to make it excellent. I greatly appreciate Kumar Mehta for writing down this beautiful self help book. Despite being a self help book, I didn't get bored even for a second. I liked it. Generally I don't like reading this genre as I feel that it's useless reading books just for the sake of reading. Whats the point recommending something to other when i'm myself not practicing it's teachings in real life. Do you agree with my thoughts, let me know in the comment section below. The language used is simple and easy for anyone to understand. The light and fast-paced writing style grabs the attention of the readers and keeps them hooked till the extreme end. The narration done by the author is smooth and well maintained. I would highly recommend this book to each and everyone reading this review. Being a reader, it took me only few hours to complete these 203 pages.
THE EXCEPTIONALS By – Kumar Mehta Format – Kindle Edition/ Paperback available too Print Length – 203 Pages Genre – Non-Fiction My Ratings – 4.7/5
“There is a master way with words which is not learned but is instead developed: a deaf man develops exceptional vision, a blind man exceptional hearing, a silent man, when given a piece of paper...”
The Exceptionals: How the Best Become the Best and How Can You, by Kumar Mehta, is a self-explanatory title that explains the meaning of the title. The book is about the Exceptionals, who are the rarest of the rare who have excelled in some fields and made a huge name for themselves. In any format, there are always some species who find even the most difficult things easy and achieve great heights in that field, which some people refer to as Exceptions.
In this book, we will study about the three ingredients that make up the formula for continuous excellence: innate abilities, intensive effort, and enabling variables. The book's topics are the result of the author's extensive research and combining information from a variety of sources. The book does an amazing job of teaching us that we, too, can be a part of the 1% of 1%.
Also, there is nothing like anything unusual, such as the World's fastest runner, whom we refer to as an exception since no one could ever beat him because he is so quick. The amount of time he spent training and the hard effort he put in to become the fastest runner, however, went unrecognised.
The book cover is basic, but the major effect was created by the writing style, which helped everything flow right into the mind and in a well-organized manner. The clarity of his language made it more enjoyable to read, and each example he provided added value to the subject and made the book a compelling read overall.
Overall, I thought it was an excellent and thought-provoking read. This is one of those books that is among my personal favourites because of the inspiration and information I received from it. This book is designed to provide you with a road map or blueprint for achieving long-term success. I strongly encourage each of you to read the book.
Note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All of the opinions are my own and this did not affect my review in any way.
For my nonfiction book of the month I was looking for an inspirational self-improvement book and after reading this book´s description I was immediately drawn to it. I can’t wait for this book to come out because I will be buying myself a copy and for everyone who is interested. This book became one of my favorite non-fiction books of all time.
The Exceptionals is a non-fiction book discussing what makes exceptional people exceptional, what does it take to be the best, to become outstanding? In this book the author gives real life examples of people who are the best of the best in their field and what you can do to become exceptional as well.
I was blown away by this book, I have read a lot of non-fiction book that have good ideas but have trouble presenting them to the reader, this was definitely not the case. The author knew what he wanted to teach the reader and in my opinion he achieved it beautifully.
This book motivated me to want to be better, it made me want to work harder and set specific goals. This book has so many powerful teachings that each of us can apply to our day to day life in order to be on step closer to our dream. For me the best part of the book was that the author gave real life examples, he gave us tips and tricks but he went further and correlated it to real life examples to make the tip and trick much more impactful.
It is obvious throughout the book that the author did his research and for me that gave it a lot of validity because you knew that what you are reading is based on real life and it is not something that the author just made up. This book includes interviews, quotes and real things said by exceptional people that give it a higher validity in my eyes.
Overall, I was blown away by this book, it was impactful, concise and extremely motivated and I highly recommend it to everyone who is looking for that small push to make their dreams come true and excel at everything they do.
Thanks so much to the author, publisher and Netgalley for allowing me read and review this book.

I really enjoyed the notion of this book, but I didn't inspire me to try to be exceptional as I wanted it to. •The book has a very creative and intriguing cover page that matches well with the title. The theme of the book is self-help.
•The book teaches readers how to maximize their inner potential and excel in any area. The term "exceptional" is defined here, along with several different ways to attain it. Exceptionals are those rare people who have achieved unrivaled expertise in their area. They may have affected billions of lives by changing the world via science, music, business, or records. The title of exceptionals is held by one-tenth of one percent of the population. They elicit their greatest abilities by optimizing their physical, mental, and social potential. It is their tale, and it presents readers with a roadmap for moving from excellent to great, and from spectacular to elite. The author emphasizes that if you want to be extraordinary, you must genuinely desire it and know the ways to attain it; you must focus on your ambitions regardless of the circumstances. Readers may easily follow the narrative since it flows naturally and swiftly. After reading this fantastic self-help book, your lifestyle will change since you will attain the best sync in your life.
This line got me—"Your stage of life does not matter; your state of mind does.” After this I could not put the book down till the last line. It just goes to say that now is as good as any a time to start leveling up, working towards getting yourself to new heights and discovering new things/capabilities about yourself. I never thought about “maximizing my potential” till I came across this book. We all know our strengths, but very few are truly motivated to go all the way.
In short, I would call it an evidence-based practical guidance book with clear examples and analysis of what it takes to rise up and be a star. A combination that will motivate anyone to start working on themselves irrespective of the domain they are in. The concepts discussed are thought-provoking and can also be a base for some important performance discussions at your workplace.
I thoroughly enjoyed every concept, every idea and every well-researched real-life story shared in this book. There are several interesting techniques described that can help you on your journey to bettering your skills or as the author says doing your “possible best” and going from “good to great”.
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who 1) feels lost and are trying to figure what they are good at and 2) who are working on honing their skills and are looking to improve.
As the blurb suggests… it is a blueprint and has encouraged me to start working on myself and my capabilities. I intend to constantly refer to it to help me skill-up!
“Don’t just set out to do a good job. Set out to do such a good job that the living, the dead, or the unborn couldn’t do it any better.”
Were people who have excelled exceptionally well in their field of work and art born exceptional?
The answer is NO... cause becoming exceptional is not a reservation therefore anyone can become all time great. It is only when you live up to this ethos you can hope to become exceptional.
This book is intended to give you a roadmap or a blueprint for you to achieve sustained excellence. Author Kumar Mehta not only discusses and helps you in your journey toward becoming exceptional by bringing out three elements that you can apply in your life. You can follow the principles laid out in this book to develop the strategy and actions that are specific to you in your journey of becoming an elite or an exceptional.

Book : The Exceptionals How The Best Become The Best And You Can Too Author : Kumar Mehta
A promising nonfiction with an enriching concept. Written in an eloquent style and polished manner this book ferret out the blueprint to reach the highest of highest peaks of our individual fields. With its well proven facts and well argued comprehension the book definitely shows the way of unparalleled mastery.
This book considers the case studies of excellent personalities and enlightens us with the x factors that one should have in order to achieve covetous victory. Mehta introduces us to the concept of innate abilities, intense effort ,how the environment shapes us , the meaning of absolute teamwork and such other key points of one's character. The quintessential to succeed is thoroughly explained which is commendable.
However, there are a few points that the author pointed out in this book that I didn't quite agree with, such as not having a plan B. Other than that the repetitive case studies can be really put off at times. Even though the book is fact oriented, and teaches us some real life components ,it failed to motivate and uplift me.
I received this book through Goodreads' Giveaway Program.
The Exceptionals documents what characteristics, capabilities and God-given abilities the top 1% of the 1% (best of the best) have in common. It is a study of why the very top are so successful. In defining these traits, natural and developed, the author hopes to teach others how to be more successful.
The author notes that 50% of the reason for success of the top is due to natural (innate) abilities that the individual was born with and can’t be accounted for by hard work, luck or any other means. The other 50% is due to skills or talents, which the author calls The Enablers, that can be learned and improve upon. Part of the other 50% is also intense effort.
Mehta lists many of these skills and talents the top performers develop such as need of a good supporting team, micro-excellence (small incremental changes), and putting all of your eggs in one basket (No Plan B).
Of course being the best of the best requires intense effort. I have noticed in my own observations that they are willing to sacrifice parts of their lives that I would not be willing to sacrifice such as marriage and family.
I don’t think I have any desire to be one of the top 1% of the top 1%, but it was interesting to see what the author thought were the defining characteristics of the top. Some of the sections such as micro-excellence, I will delve into deeper because I feel there is a lot of value to continuously look to improve.
Although not typically the type of book I'm drawn to, I read the synopsis for The Exceptionals by Kumar Mehta and I was intrigued. Who doesn't want to learn more about what it takes to be the best at something or to excel in your field? I listened to the audio version of the title and the narration was engaging and the book was well written, informative, and easy to follow. I enjoyed the listening experience, though I was disappointed with some of the guidance in the book stressing the work life imbalance necessary to be truly exceptional I also had a hard time with the author's emphasis on not being well-rounded and instead having a singular focus on one area in order to be exceptional. I think the book was enjoyable and definitely made me think, despite the challenges I had in accepting the information. I would recommend it if you are curious about the author's ideas and to learn more about certain individuals that are in the 1%.
I received an ALC of this title from the publisher via NetGalley which did not affect the contents of my voluntary review. All opinions are honest and my own.
⭐Short and easy to read exceptional and practical book about the importance of thinking! What a concept. well, for me. It’s the second book I've read by Kumar Mehta and I find his style very readable which inspires me to read more of his books.
⭐The message in this book resonates with others that I have read such as the Slight Edge and helps hammer home the importance of how you think. Give it a chance and decide for yourself. Definitely not like other self help books that vaguely talk about successful thinking.
⭐I didn't expect much going in as I'm very familiar with self-help material of this nature but this book turned out to be a winner! There were a few things I put into place immediately. There are some I will revisit and try in the future. I'll be rereading this in the future. It seems like a book that can feed you different gems at different points in your life/career.
⭐Very good book. All people should read this, but especially young people in the working world that want to know what to do to get ahead. Many lessons in this book with a great reflection. Highly recommended for anyone with BIG dreams!

I recommend this book to all specially to young ones.
🌈 Recently came across this very insightful book that has the power to bring the best out of you, what it means to be exceptional? Extra talented? To be able to do everything? Oh, no it's not that, through this book I have learnt being exceptional means being the best in what you can do the best, that's it, it's not developing or learning a new ways or new skills but actually finding out what you're best at and the putting your 100% into it, if you do that, you're an exceptional. . . The concept of the book is not very new but of course the way it's presented is so unique in itself the book talks about innate talents and abilities and to polish them to do tasks with full efficiency. . . The concepts are very well organized and the book itself is a handy guide to achieve and understand what it means to be exceptional and how you can be one of them. . . I am so glad that I read it because in a way, it's very interactive and focuses on growth of an individual. Definitely recommended. . Rating: 4.25⭐️
I title of this book caught my eye thought i'll get to see how Exceptional individual perform and get good at what they do .Instead , I found that 50% of individual's excellence is due to genetics .It was mostly the chapters that discussed how environment and work ethic develop exceptional individuals into what they are today , that got my attention.
All I gather is that, if a person does not achieve exceptionality by their teens or early 20s, their lives will remain unchanged. In this way, anything beyond a certain age is discouraged. There are many examples that show this is not true in real life.
From this book key take away was that Work ethic and environment play a significant role in bringing out the best in an individual, and will ignore the rest.
It is a good book in terms of narration, and the author does a good job expressing the idea simply. However, do not expect any encouragement, uplift or boost after reading it.
You could be Exceptional. What are Exceptionals? If you are an average Joe, can you become an Exceptional? If you are good at something can you become great at it? Are you more intelligent than you know?
What happens to us is that we compare ourselves to those we name as exceptional people. Certainly, someone we could most definitely never match, like the athlete Michael Phelps, or Nobel Laureate, Richard Feynman. Or could we? Kumar states that 50% of what makes you special is what you are born with. Twenty-five percent is the effort you put in, and 25% come from enablers, the environment, your commitment, your abilities to learn and gain knowledge from.
If you can determine what your own strengths are and work hard at whatever your natural strength is, anything is possible. Work at your possible best not just your personal best. Do it now. You are Exceptional.
I won a copy of this book through Goodreads Giveaways and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I found the portraits of The Exceptionals in this book really interesting, and the idea that anyone can be exceptional with the right starting point and mindset is fascinating. However, I also found this to be kind of a glorification of the “hustle” culture that I honestly can’t get behind, which definitely says more about me than the book. But culturally, it’s interesting that the focus on being exceptional means that I have to choose a career or a hobby and master it. What if I want to be an exceptional mom? Or an exceptional friend? Who would judge that and deem me in the top 1% of that? If you’re looking to become the best (insert job title here), the book offers a way to get there and the tips are sound.
This book is more motivational than informative. Focuses on basic aspects of being good (rather exceptional )at anything. Though the author mentions that this is about being the best self - it does venture into being comparison and being better than other. This is a bit conflicting as this works better in rivalry scenarios (mostly in sport) than in professional jobs. Like how do you distinguish an exception lawyer vs a lawyer who focuses on doing good. The author almost focuses on being financially great defining being exceptional. Still a good book and lot to learn. But if you tread into philosophy- being probably is more important than exceptional. Like would you want to be super rich and single and flooded with legal cases vs being decently wealthy but almost invisible to the public and super happy - so who is exceptional?
