Deep in Your Veins #7

Touch of Rapture

Rate this book
Rulers of vampirekind Sam Parker and Jared Michaels are enjoying the current peace that’s fallen among their species … until it abruptly shatters. A vampire unlawfully attempting to Turn unwilling humans is somehow inadvertently killing them. It makes no sense, just like the strange brand on his palm and the fact that he boasts multiple vampiric gifts. He also has the same mercury glint to his irises that Sam herself possesses … indicating that she’s no longer the only vampire hybrid in the world.

It quickly becomes clear that eliminating him won’t be easy, especially since he’s under the protection of an ancient being more powerful than Sam and Jared combined. They must win-over the ancient and track the hybrid before more innocent humans die … which would be a lot easier if a distraction hadn’t come in the form of a stranger appearing at The Hollow making an exceedingly bold claim.

A claim that he once had a precognitive vision of himself Bound to Sam.

A low disappointing 3*

I can’t begin to describe how excited I was to discover another book in this series. Dark in You and Deep in Your Veins are two of my favourite series. So I dropped everything and started reading.

Okay so it’s been awhile and I’d forgotten how much this author constantly recaps and how much said recapping gets on my last nerve. I mean seriously if you start a series mid way in you’re going to miss things. It’s the way it goes, or should go. Not with this author every little thing is recapped.
Why?
Seriously why?
Anyway I’m not pulling my soapbox out that’s it on the recapping.

Sex.
Yes sex is good but was there so much of it in previous books?
It just felt like filler. Maybe because the story felt weak and wasn’t enough to carry the book. I don’t know but between the recapping (just a quick mention no soapbox I promise) and filler sex it was like wading through treacle.

So while I was excited to be back in the Hollow. I was left wishing I hadn’t bothered.

How do I rate this book?
I want to give it 2* a reflection of my disappointment. But honestly it’s not actually a 2* read so I’m reluctantly giving a low 3*.

I honestly didn't expect for Mrs. Wright to write another book in this series LOL, cause I kind of wrapped it up myself, in a sparkling purple bow and put it away safely in the "best series ever" compartment where I dust it off from time to time..cause yeah, I love Sam and Jared that much...

And now this title Touch of Rapture...my hands shake a little... *input nervous laugh cause WTH, right?!* brings the anticipation to the next level...

So, my weekend is set...

Simply put, PERFECT!!!!!

Loved hearing more about Sam, Jared and gang!

I love Sam and Jared and enjoy reading more about them. I like that they just didn't fade away after their HEA. It was also nice seeing all the other couples that have gotten together since the beginning of this series.

I'm very excited to know there is another series that is spinning off of this one called The Devil's Cradle that is about the Ancients. The other series that came from this one is The Dark In You. I think our may be time for another reread of that series.

Quick(ish) Review

For completists only, as this story is more of a check in for those who loved Sam and Jared and the other vamps in the Hollow. And a lot of sex. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

My main problem is Sam and Jared feel like the only distinctive characters, everyone else just blends into each other. They are all possessive, kinda bloodthirsty and occasionally snarky. I could not tell you what each member of this legion does for or who they’re with. And I’ve read Sam and Jared’s HEA already so this is just more of the same. I love several of Ms. Wright’s books but unfortunately this is only ok for me.

This book acts as both a bridge to Suzanne Wrights’ new Devils Cradle series and as a way for us to check back in with Sam and Jared (who, by the way, are as funny, crazy and sexy as they have always been).
It did a wonderful job of feeding the cravings we’ve been having for the OG couple and of sending them off on a new, interesting adventure to make the book more than just filler content.
Of course, since Suzanne Wright wrote it I thoroughly enjoyed it and I’m both happy and sad that I’m at the end of this series. Happy because of the sense of satisfaction you feel for finishing a full series. Sad because I’m steadily working my way through Suzanne Wrights’ works and I don’t want to run out.

5 ‘ I’m yours. You’re mine.’ stars

Awwww, how I miss these guys! As captivating, and enthralling as the rest of the series, I absolutely ADORED how secure and rock solid Jared and Sam were in this one, even considering all the energy balls thrown their way. It was SUPERB from start to finish and I was even left want more! Yep, truly ADDICTIVE!!!

I'd rate this 4.5 stars. To be honest, I didn't think I'd be that into this book, especially since Captivated, set in this same world with the same characters, had just come out as well. This author definitely exercises her right to reuse the same themes, style and phrases and after having a lot of the well-worn clichés rolled out in the couple of books, I though this one would push the love too far. I'm glad to say that while there was a teeny bit of this, it wasn't excessive and I really enjoyed catching up with the Deep in Your Veins crew and world again. I saw a couple of other reviews mention that they think the Jared and Sam story line has run it's course, but on the contrary, this is what appealed to me about this book and I love that this author made the effort to revisit a fan favourite and keep the charm of the main couple alive, especially for someone like me who revisits the original three books every now and then for a reread.

Firstly, if you're only just picking this book up as a starting point for the series, you can probably get away with doing so as there are plenty of recaps and enough repetition of past events and key characteristics of the Hollow (where the main characters reside) that you won't be missing a whole lot of critical information. However, I'd recommend starting this series from the beginning. While you can skip the books that deviate to other couples' stories in the series, the first three books really are the best, setting up Sam's history and her relationship with Jared. It's what introduced me to this author many a year ago and they will always be a nostalgic favourite for me as it kicked off another one of her (best, in my opinion) series. I'll also add that since this is a well-established series, there are definite spoilers throughout this book for key events that occurred in past novels in the same series, so consider yourself warned.

So, what's this novel about? Well, Jared and Sam are as much in love with each other as they've ever been, being the Grand High Vampires and leading their kind in a firm but fair manner. Life in the Hollow continues as it always across this series and it was great to catch up with all of the secondary characters that made this series great, including Fletcher and the male and female squads lead by Jared and Sam. Although to be honest, there are so many couples now I get a bit muddled up with who's with who and what their special vampiric gifts are. While you get to touch base with the whole gang and they pop up throughout the story, the plot definitely revolves around Sam and Jared, which personally, I loved. Like I said above, to a big fan of this series such as myself, I love that this author went back to the main couple and gave them another story (and I hope it's not the last in the main couple's books, either, as they're what made me fall hard for this series in the first place). Of course, things can never be that simple and when an ex from Jared's past pops back up and maliciously reveals that another visitor has had a premonition of Sam being bonded to them, Jared and Sam's lives are sunk into turmoil. Add to that, there's a menace on the loose who appears to be another hybrid like Sam, except he's killing humans and vampires by the bucketful. There's also a death and a missing person on the island.

There was a lot to like in the series. The squads working together with Jared and Sam was definitely great to read, as was the introduction of a new species. I won't spoil it here as it's a good moment in the plot, but there's a new big bad on the block that is the stuff of myth and legend. I love the background and premise to the new species - the male introduced in this book smacks of Knox Thorne for fans of this author's The Dark in You series: dark and deliciously handsome, crazy powerful and leaking danger. I have a strong feeling this new spin has made an appearance as a new series with an anti-hero might be on the horizon and I really hope I'm on the right track. If Wright can manage to write another series without relying too heavily on the repeated words, phrases and themes and over the top tragic backstories that some of her books have been steeped in (as it strips away the originality of her series), it'll be a sure-fire winner.

Anyway, back to Sam and Jared. If you liked them in the previous books, as I did, you'll continue to love them in this one. Sam is still full of sass, confidence and kick-butt attitude, making her a great heroine. I didn't think it was possible, but I think Jared became more jealous, possessive and obsessed with Sam in this book and I flippin' loved it. His character also had periods of insecurity and anxiousness which gave a new perspective for a familiar character. If you read Captivated, there was a loose end with what Lexi's gift might be - this is tied up in this book, thankfully. The plot moved along at a solid pace as they try to track and catch the new hybrid as well as get to the bottom of the premonition, especially since there's also the murder and missing vampire to attend to. There was also the possibility of another relationship being formed among the squad - possible groundwork for a future book being laid down?

There was a little bit of repetition but I didn't find it anywhere near as bad as some other books by this author and this made reading Touch of Rapture much more enjoyable and restores a little of my faith in my ability to continue reading books by Suzanne Wright. There was the jealous and catty ex, the snarky comments by Sam that came close to laying it on too thickly (which can sometimes make this author's heroines go from being strong and confident to annoying and obnoxious), a revisit to past trauma/tragedy that has led to relationship issues and the repetition of jokes, quirks, the series of three or so verbs in a row and themes that are often dragged out by the author. There was also a couple of the typical, obvious conversations amongst the characters where key facts come out when they're having a deep and meaningful. Thankfully, none of this was dragged out ad nauseam (apart from probably the Dexter vs Jared thing), but it's worth mentioning as it's still floating about. And I'd be remise if I didn't mention my favourite word that always manages to squirm it's way into this author's books: sipping. Yes, you'll be pleased to know that Jared has a bit of a sip from Sam's mouth. Thank goodness for that. Here I was thinking that the hero was losing his juju.

I took half a star off because even though I know it's this author's style to have zippy dialogue. Still, having Jared and Sam talk like teenagers when they're the Grand High vampires became a bit too much after a while. Like, I get it's part of their 'charm' and the mannerisms established in this series, but the whole 'you're so bloodthirsty and violent' little chats got a bit tired by the end, especially for someone like me who's reread the past books in this series more than once. Some of the plot was predictable, including the antagonist in the Hollow murder, although I will say there was another twist added in that I hadn't seen coming. I also found it hilarious that in one of the expected 'laid on thick' dialogue scenes where key points are smashed into readers' faces in a really obvious way, Sam gives a condescending speech to a more powerful being. Stretching the reality a bit far here lol. Oh, and there were a couple of typos which you don't normally see with this author - one was accidentally calling Jared 'Jaren'. Oops.

Overall, I really enjoyed this and will probably read it again, most likely straight after Book 3 (and possibly 4, which is also a winner) in this series and skipping over the middle books which are a lot of rinse, recycle and repeat of... you guessed it.... the same themes and style but to the extreme. I really hope there's another book with Jared and Sam. Maybe with them being the focus, this led to there being less repetition? I don't know, but I really enjoyed it and hope there will be more in the future.

After procrastinating about this book and Captivatedof should I or shouldn't read them I have decided not to read these. The main reason I reread Here Be Sexist Vampires recently and it just wasn't the same anymore. I also can't be arsed to go back and read them all again to remember who these people are.
After such a long time is it wise to go back to a series? Even to tie up loose ends?

Not gonna lie,I was a bit disappointed with this. It was nice to revisit the OG series regulars and the banter was fun. She gives good steam, but I need more than quirky quips and nostalgia. The main plot line/mystery was Not much of a mystery At All. The only thing missing on this villain's head was the flashing neon sign that read GUILTY. If you couldn't figure out the who and why in this story then I think you need to check for your pulse. Hoping that the next shifter and Dark In You installments are better or I might have one less author on my auto-buy list.

It's Suzanne Wright, like many would say.....She could shit on paper and I would read it and love it. I am her biggest fan.

It wasn't easy for me to get into this book for some reason. Honestly if I hadn't been buddy reading it with Kodie, I probably would have put it off. I'm so glad we pushed each other into not getting side tracked. While it wasn't the best she has given me, it was still so enjoyable.

What I loved most about this book was getting a sneak peek into the Devils Cradle. Now it's just a little peek, but it has me so ready and excited for it.

I loved seeing all the characters and getting back to Sam and Jared. But, I do feel like this could have been someone else's book and it would have fit perfect. This could have easily been Paige and Max's storyline and I would have devoured it. But it's not. And while I really enjoyed it, it wasn't my favorite.

Like I always tell myself, if they were all my favorite, I would haven't have a favorite right? This book served a purpose. It is a bridge into a new world and I can't wait to run across it and get to a new series.

If you read this, Enjoy My Friends….

I listened to this series a while ago and then this book came out. I didn’t go back and listen to the others so I really struggled to remember things. I just found it very very hard to get into this book. There is some spice. Might have liked it more if I read it back to back with the others in the series.

Ok ...this is a surprise...because i thought that the writer was dkne with sam and jared's story and now the books wil be based on the other characters.
But obviously not since one of my favourite coiples are back.
I reqlly liksd the previous books due to a no. of reasons
1. The heroine is awesome.Sam is badass headstrong intelligent and feminist.
All the characters you like in a good heroine
2.The hero as in jared is hot arrogant and sexist. But he is also keen on changing himself when he realoses he is in love. Also he had a bad history and thus genuine reasons to be a sexist arrogant jerk. Thus even though he seems to be after the heroine at first just to sleep with her later on ot bbecomes obvious that he genuinely cares about her.
3. The character development of the hero was thus noth8ng short of awesome.
4.the supporting characters were also quite intresting and funny.
5 the plot was also amazing even though a little predictable at times.
All in all i love the book and the writer..😍😘🥰❤❤

********** Contains Spoilers**********

I rated this book 4.5 Stars, so I rounded it up to 5 Stars. I’ve been a fan of Suzanne’s since I was first recommended this series through Amazon back in 2016. I’ve read books 1 - 5 of this series a couple of times since then, but. Suzanne’s Phoenix & Mercury Pack and Olympus Pride books are definitely my go to re-reads from her. I enjoyed this book and thought that it was another good addition to the Deep in Your Veins Series, maybe it will be the last book of the series. This book goes back to the couple that started it all, Jared and Sam. Their advisor Luther, tells Jared and Sam about the vision he just had. A vampire is unlawfully turning humans, but it’s not working and they end up dying. To make matters even more confusing is that he has the mercury glint to his Irises just like Sam. Does this mean that Sam is no longer the only hybrid in the world? It’s a race against time to find the vampire and stop him before he kills anymore people. Jared, Sam and the squad sets out to the co-ordinates that Luther gave them for where he’s next going to target a human.

They think that it’ll be easy but it’s not as the vampire has multiple vampire gifts, including being able to open portals and has some strange mark on his hand that makes them feel sick therefore hesitating a moment so he could escape. When they get back to the Hollow and tell Luther, Sebastian and Antonio about what happened, they find out that the mark on his hand means that he’s under the protection of the Ancients. Meaning that they have to visit the Ancients and get him to release his protection from the vampire. They go meet Cain, he’s one scary but good looking being. Luther, Antonio’s friend visits the Hollow with his consort Daphne and two guards. Jared really doesn’t like the way that the male guard looks at Sam. They find out later that night when Daphne, is trying to stir sh*t and be a complete b*tch when she mentions that he’s looking at Sam because he saw in a vision that they were bound together.

Jared completely freaks out, which is understandable considering his upbringing, and that his vision that Luther gifted him showed him rolling alone without Sam beside him. I’m surprised how much restraint Jared showed by not ending the a*sehole, Sam also showed it as well. Yes, it would’ve hurt seeing the women he believed that he was going to bonded to, bound to another but why request to come to the Hollow so you could meet her but then not even talk to her. He was an a*sehole doing petty sh*t trying to stir up issues between Sam and Jared, which worked for all of 5 minutes when Jared and Sam got rid of all their anger and realised that, that was what he was trying to put a wedge between them. I’m looking forward to reading The Wicked In Me when it’s released, and learning more about Cain, and the other Ancients. I’m going to enjoy reading Suzanne’s the Dark in You Series since they’ve from this universe. I’d definitely recommend this book, series and author to everyone.

⭐ 1 Star — A Miserable, Repetitive End to a Series That Should’ve Been Three Books Max
I hated every second of this book.
There. I said it.

🧍 We’re Back to the OG Clones: Jared & Sam
After six books of recycled characters and recycled sex scenes, we return to the original duo — the blueprint for every toxic, one-note relationship in this series.
And guess what?
They haven’t evolved. At all.

🛏️ 20-30% of This Book Is Copy-Paste Sex
I’m not kidding.
The sex scenes are literally the same ones you’ve read in the last six books — repeated almost verbatim.
Same aggressive dirty talk.
Same lack of emotional depth.
Same woman instantly turned to mush the moment her “mate” touches her shoulder.

There is nothing new here.
Just the same loop, repackaged for the seventh time.

🤡 Jared Throws a Tantrum — Again
This man…
A stranger has a vision that involves Sam (not something she did, not something real — just a damn vision) and Jared reacts like she betrayed him.
He’s brooding. He’s hurt. He’s dramatic.
And instead of Sam telling him to get a grip, she comforts him.
Because apparently, even Jared’s imaginary pain matters more than all the crap Sam actually went through — including dealing with his real-life exes constantly making her life hell.

If you're wondering whether he ever shows her the same understanding?
Of course not. This is Jared.

📖 The Plot? Who Cares.
There’s technically a plot here.
But it’s just filler — an excuse to break up the endless parade of recycled smut scenes.
No stakes. No tension. No reason to care.

💀 The Worst Main Characters I’ve Ever Read
And I don’t say that lightly.
Sam and Jared are the most unlikable, unimaginative protagonists I’ve come across.
Not because they’re “edgy” or “flawed” — but because they’re shallow, one-dimensional, and written with no growth or nuance.
Sam could’ve been strong. Jared could’ve been complex.
Instead, we got temper tantrums and hormonal puppet strings.

📚 Final Thoughts
This whole series reads like the author wrote the same book seven times and just swapped out the names and trauma backstories.
There was potential here — vampires, action, powers, court politics — but it was all wasted on a parade of emotionally stunted man-children and women whose “strength” evaporates the moment they’re called “baby.”

I don’t even have the energy for a proper wrap-up.
This series drained me.

I’m just glad it’s over.

I LOVE Sam and Jared. I do. I was excited to see they got another book. I just found this series recently and loved it. There were some things that didn't gel well with me but I still enjoyed the books. What has continuously annoyed me since book 2 and has gotten worse into book 7 are THE RECAPS!!! Why must we spend pages upon pages referencing what has happened in previous books??? WE KNOW ALREADY!!! I can't even get invested in the new story because I keep having to skip pages of information I've already read. I just don't understand this and it's taking away from my enjoyment while also making me want to count the number of pages that actually pertain to the new storyline. I LOVE being able to revisit previous characters, but with all the characters from The Hollow we've already met, where does it make sense to go into so many unnecessary details??? I don't want to know about Sam/Jared's issues, what they had to overcome to be together, why they love each other...we got THREE BOOKS!!! Can we focus on the here and now!?! I don't want to know about the squads powers because once again, numerous books.

For anyone who doesn't know, because they haven't read the books, I would assume reading a book like this would pique their interest enough to want to read the earlier books or maybe eventhe whole series. But if you're telling them EVERYTHING they need to know, why bother!?! It's like a good movie trailer, you want it to leave you awed and in suspense. No one wants to watch a movie trailer and decide they already know the plotline and what's going to happen in the movie.

It's safe to say I had to put this book down very early in and maybe I'll try to read it again in 2022. It's possible that these things only bother me because I just read through this series in the past 2 weeks so all the details are fresh in my mind.

Loved this book!
Since starting to read the whole Deep in your Veins series I enjoyed every book.
"Touch of Rapture" shows the reader Sam and Jared a couple of years after their binding. They understand each other still perfectly and are deeply attracted to each other. But as in every relationship they are also learning about each other which is a nice parallel to human relationships (which is proof than one never stops learning). The situation put in front of them in the book requires that (not giving anything away here) and it is great to see that they stand above everything with their relationship. The fact that they are bound helps with the emotional part, but as the book clearly shows they also need to talk (as every couple). And then there's Dexter who spices up their relationship from time to time ;-) I really, really like that snake.
It was also great to hear from their personal squads again and how they are doing in terms of their relationships. One of my favorite scenes is one of the last ones where all of them are described. It proves that mythological creatures like vampires have similar (deep) longings and desires as humans.
I sincerely hope this is not the last book in the series. There's lot of potential in getting in touch with the other species like the Ancients (as it happens already in this book). Just my two cents here.
All in all this is a great story, wrapped in a lot of humor, spicy scenes and new challenges for the Grand High Pair and their Legion.

1st reading : 10th-11th April 2022
Rating : 3.5 out of 5
- 9th book in the month of April 2022
- 84th book in 2022 reading challenge

I'm glad that I picked this book before I read Devil's Cradle series.

This is probably the last book in DiYV series. I don't know anymore if there will be another book in this series. Probably about Damian and Lexi or Stuart and whoever her name is (Too many characters...I forgot). Shit that happened this time is pretty messy. So many to kill within a pretty short book.

Sam and Jared also have their own issues throughout the book because of Ansel (who somehow got this vision about him and Sam being together). They also have to deal with the 'new hybrid' and also a murder in The Hollow. It's pretty messy and there are also some unnecessary things. What I liked is to meet again with Sam and Jared and the gang (even though the girl squad is barely here). I also really like the snippets of Cain, the main male character in the new series.

I'm having a reading slump while I tried to finish this book. That's why it takes me soooo long to finish.

My home from home!

The Deep in Your Veins series is an amazing series. Wealth of characters, action, fighting, sexy times, angst, emotions and humour galore. In Touch of Rapture Sam and Jared are the main characters with plenty of side character involvement. As always Suzanne doesn’t give one story but three stories working away. Josiah, the bad bad vamp kept the, on their toes throughout the book trying to capture him. Ansel and his vision, not gonna lie, I felt for him and his feelings for Sam. Expect twists and turns until the end and as always, squad party to finish up. But even better, an introduction to Cain from the upcoming series Devil’s Cradle and omg how excited am I about this!
I love The Hollow and all it’s inhabitants and is one of my go to reread series. I implore you to start at the beginning with Here Be Sexist Vampires, if you have not started the series, but if you’re all caught up, buy this book!

Just another fantastic addition to the Deep In You Veins series. With Touch Of Rapture we go back to the vamps that started it all, Sam and Jared.

These are two of the best characters when it comes to personality. They are certainly the stars of this series they are alpha, crazy, and fun on top of it. They are the rulers of the vampire world now as the Grand High Pair and even though it's been years, still not everyone is ok with them as rulers. But it's their fierceness, loyalty, and unwavering love for each other that makes so fantastic.

It was really great to get another book where they were the stars of the show.

Something I wasn't aware of before reading this was that we get an introduction to Suzanne's next series with the introduction of Cain and the Devil's Cradle where 'The Wicked In Me' is set. I really enjoyed that little surprise.

I don't think there will be more in the series but I would quite happily read more if there is.

Nope. No. This was a DNF for me. I was already annoyed because book 6 was such a disaster for me, only to open book 7 and skip the majority the first 7% of it because it's shit you already know if you've read books 1-6 AND considering this is not a standalone book, it was all utterly unnecessary. Is it word filler? Is it page count?

More questions - is Jared British? NO. He was initially described as a good ol' California boy, but does the author care to make him sound like it ? Of course not !! Are these characters strangely familiar now? Yes, because they're no different than Knox & Harper and any other couple from her other books. Only very few of them actually stand distinctively at this point.

I'm just pissy, this is not an easy break up for me, but it must be done. There is nothing new or exciting for me here.

It seems like a wrap for this series as Sam completes her team and all the characters with previous threads stop to wave goodbye. But it can’t be that simple, of course. Antonio has a guest or two visit the Hollow for his birthday. One of those guests bring two walking bags of trouble. It has been a LONG time since I've been back in this world. The funny thing was that it took absolutely NO time to slide right back in and remember Sam and Jared. I will admit, the other secondary characters were not as easy to place in the beginning, but I did remember Fletcher :)

This was one of those books were we, the readers, have already (for the most part) been given the HEA and it is kind of like a check in just to see how those characters are doing. In that scenario, this was a great story. We got to see most of the gang, there was a small mystery, a bit of conflict and the story arc kept my interest until the very end.

I think that the biggest takeway from this for me was the fact that the author created a strong enough world, with strong characters that stayed in the mind of the reader (that would be me). For someone who reads a LOT of books, any book that can do that is a success in my mind.

Would I read something else from this world? Yep, without a doubt.

I liked this one. It was a bit hard getting into it sometimes as we have dual audio narrators. And when the guy would do the h's voice and her British accent it would sometimes feel a little jarring and take the reader out of the story.

Overall I like the flow of the story and revisiting some good ol' characters. I did question just how many bad things can pop up from the cellar to trouble a couple and cause strife in a relationship, especially this couple. And having a would-be lover show up who had a vision at some time that he is the one who is supposed to be with h did feel like a "here we go again" type of moment. But I guess some relationships are like that sometimes, and you guys have endless crap you have to wade through if you wish to keep your HEA.

Great book.

I’m so glad Suzanne decided to write more for this series. I’ve reread the series at least 3 times and love the characters. This book was great and I like it that there were 2 ongoing issues they had to resolve. One had an interesting twist that I didn’t see coming. Overall, fun action, great dialogue and lots of love & sweet moments between Jared & Sam. She’s direct & confident as usual.
I’m very curious about Cain & the Ancients. Not sure if there could be a storyline there but I’d be interested in reading it.
This is a fantastic book & I recommend this & the series to all.
