CIA analyst Brynn Taylor developed a new program to combat terrorism, and she invited members of foreign intelligence agencies to America to foster cooperation between countries. Now one of them, Egyptian spy Remon Riad, is missing.
Jack Hudson has been working for the Strategic Neutralization and Protection Agency (SNAP) for almost nine years and takes the lead in hunting down the missing spy. But he isn't at all pleased to find out Brynn is involved. It's hard to trust a woman who's already betrayed you.
Every lead they follow draws them dangerously deeper into an international plot. Kidnapping, murder, explosions, poisoning--the terrorists will do anything to accomplish their goal of causing a digital blackout that will blind a strategic US military communications center and throw the world into chaos.
Can Brynn surrender control to a man who doesn't trust her? And can Jack ever get over what she did to him? The fate of the world--and their hearts--hangs in the balance.
My world revolves around GIJOE and our three adult (or almost adult) children who keep my life anything but predictable. Our boots hit the ground wherever the Army sends us but home is when we’re all together no matter the zipcode. My passion is writing stories where adventure meets love and share my belief that life rooted in purpose is a story worth telling.
Readers who pick up Lights Out should prepare for a book that will keep them turning pages long past their personal lights out. It is a compelling story of international intrigue and implications. It's also a story of second chances if the hero and heroine are willing to embrace them. This novel will satisfy readers who love romantic suspense with threads of thrilling international intrigue. I highly recommend it.
Romantic suspense readers will fall in love with Brynn and Jack as they race against time and the terrorists to figure out who's killing Egyptian nationals and has painted a traget on Brynn's back. A compelling, must read from one of my always reads, Natalie Walters.
WOW - what a WILD ride ya'll! A great start to a romantic suspense series! This one is more fast paced, action packed suspense with a dab of a great second chance romance included and I can not WAIIIITTT to see how book 2 goes! The end of this with the romance though was TOP TIER!
I am such a suspense girl now and this one is SO unique where we see this awesome team (the SNAP or Strategic Neutralization and Protection Agency) agency) work together to combat terrorism and cyber crime - something I normally don't read about. Loved it so much because it really kept me on edge where I "NEEDED TO KNOW ALLLL THE THINGS" and getting to see everything from behind the scenes was so interesting to me!
This follow Brynn and Jack, who have quite the history together. They haven't seen each other in years and now all of a sudden they have to work together to bring down a missing spy. Jack doesn't trust Brynn for past reasons but they make it work throughout the story as their past comes to the forefront and they discuss everything. It's obvious there are still feelings between the two of them but they have a job to do with so much happening and they make sure to put the focus where it needs to be! Terrorist attacks loom among their case and things pop off left and right as they are trying to track everything down.
This felt like an episode of a show like NCIS or something like that - so engaging and fast paced, with a little bit of possible romance between our main characters - loved!
Highly recommend for anyone who loves a good romantic suspense!
Characters: Brynn and Jack were both interesting characters who added to the story, but my favorite character was Kekoa. I mean, who doesn't like reading about a huge Hawaiian guy who's always joking around and trying to take over the plot? I'm guessing the next book is about him, so I'm looking forward to reading that.
Language: Clean.
Moral: I'd say the main themes of this novel were trusting God and knowing that God is in control. These themes were shown in Brynn's life because she tended to think everything was up to her and she always tried to be in control.
Plot: Plenty of action, tense moments, and growing character relationships kept the plot moving. The technology aspects were described in a way average readers can more easily understand them (average reader here). I didn't love the domestic terrorism/your next-door neighbor is probably a terrorist angle though.
Random comments: At the beginning, I struggled with the whole CIA aspect because the CIA isn't exactly the most moral of organizations, but I reminded myself this is fiction and moved on with my reading. :) I was also a little disturbed by the few lines that presented the idea that the whole world needs to unite to get rid of terrorism. Let's just say I've read Revelation ...
Romance: Clean. Just a kiss at the end. I did think the romance took away from the plot at some points in the story. For example, Jack and Brynn would switch from talking about their case to discussing their feelings for each other in a way that felt a little unnatural/disruptive. Then again, I'm not the biggest fan of romances. :)
Writing: Natalie Walters has a great writing style. I liked how she worked some humor into the characters' dialogue to keep the book from getting too dark.
Overall: Lights Out was an entertaining read, and I'd recommend it to those who enjoy Christian fiction and romantic suspense.
Disclosure: I received this book free from the publisher/author. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a positive review. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Hmmm. I love the idea of this agency and plan to continue the rest of the trilogy, but I did struggle with this book for different reasons.
A main reason would be the main characters: Brynn & Jack.
I’m not a big fan of Brynn. She’s keeping a possible clue to herself because of the implications it could have for her if it is a national security concern. Her comments about working in a man’s world—while not frequent—were a bit much.
I didn’t like that Jack was sort-of-kind-of-somewhat-just-friends dating a girl, but started to be re-attracted to Brynn at the same time. He and the other girl weren’t serious, but it still felt kind of weird to me. (I have to add that I don’t think it helps that I was unconsciously comparing him to the Jack Hudson from Sue Thomas: FBEye that my family recently binged and I much prefer that Jack Hudson.)
I was more interested in the other characters, which speaking of side characters, can there be a side story of Dr. Payne? He amused me.
Secondly, there wasn’t really any Christian faith content until pg. 164, beside a few mentions of praying earlier. I was expecting at least a bit more Christian faith content, honestly, so I’m disappointed in that. There’s some mentions of trusting God and Him being our anchor in a storm, but at one point Brynn feels like God was giving her an anchor in the chaos when she sees Jack’s gaze towards her, which kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Our anchor in a storm is God, not a handsome man you like. Later, she still feels that peace and says it’s the hope that only God could offer, but I wish the prior part had been clearer. I would be more likely to mark this as a clean read than a Christian one because of the lack of faith content.
Overall? I’m pretty bummed. I had high hopes for the start of this series, but this first book definitely did not make them.
Good! Author Natalie Walters has shifted from a small town police force series to one covering security worldwide. While most of the story takes place in Washington DC and Virginia, there is also action in Egypt, Texas and Georgia.
Outstanding cast of characters. Plausible and fast paced storyline. Slow building romance. Comic relief with team member Kekoa. This all comes together for a great start to the SNAP (Strategic Neutralization and Protection Agency) Series!
My gratitude to publisher Revell for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.
Lights Out is a great start of a new series set in Washington, DC. I am excited to read the next story and have purchased the novella that is an overview. Brynn Taylor has wanted to stop terrorism since her firefighter father of House 11 of FDNY was badly injured in 9/11. She is an agent of the CIA and head of a special project that brings people in from around the world to work towards fighting terrorism. Things go bad when a participant from Egypt disappears and the intelligence community goes on high alert. She is sent to work with SNAP, a private company in the business to help find him but has to work with ex-boyfriend Jack Hudson, who she went through the CIA Farm training with. That didn't end well. This is a rollercoaster of action, danger, suspense, and the terrorists always one step ahead. I enjoyed the setting, fun group of characters working to stop what appears to be one bad group of troublemakers along with the hope of a second chance at romance and sprinkled with faith. Better get started with this new series if you enjoy intense suspense and second chances filled with tension and sparks. I received a complimentary ARC from Revell Publishing and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine only.
Natalie Walters has put together a phenomenal new team for the SNAP series! The characters are all fantastically written and I look forward to reading more stories with them. It’s scary to think that the scenario that plays out in this book could happen in real life, but throughout the story, we’re presented with the hope that only God can provide when faced with such evil. Her personal experience with the locations and the agencies involved shines through and brings a realistic experience from start to finish!
Fans of Lynette Eason, Dani Pettrey, Dee Henderson, etc will want to grab this series for sure!
A high-stakes international terrorist plot. An elite agency created to handle this kind of threat. A CIA analyst so immersed in her career that she's lost track of everything else -- including the man she once loved. Only now they are thrown together in a race-against-time scenario. Talk about sense of urgency and angst and a ricochet of heart-in-throat action moments that kept me on edge right to the last breathless second. Phew!
First off -- our hero, Jack Hudson!!! That takes me back to the good ol' days of Sue Thomas F B Eye. Did anyone else watch that show? I wonder if that was deliberate on the part of the author, or just a coincidence? But this Jack definitely has the same qualities as the TV Jack and the same melt-your-heart-into-goo chocolate brown eyes. :-)
And his SNAP team -- a diverse and eclectic band of talented professionals who know how to work hard and have formed a deep bond which spills over into teasing banter and pointed heart-to-hearts. They've created a kind of family and I loved every single group scene! Super excited to see what's in store for each team member in future books in the series.
And then we have Brynn. Gulp. I'll admit I wasn't a fan in the beginning. She's driven and so focused on the job that she's seems almost robotic. In fact, she chose the CIA over Jack in the past and their reunion on this mission is fraught with tension. He doesn't trust her and she's all kinds of defensive. The author does a great job of building up the suspense about their past relationship and I found my heart softening towards Brynn bit by bit as more and more of her back story was revealed.
The complex suspense with all its twists and turns makes for a compelling read. As does the way the author manages to weave a faith thread into Brynn's life. Trust and forgiveness. Finding the strength to let go and hand the control over to God. Tough lessons during an impossible time which makes the learning that much sweeter.
These are characters I can't wait to meet again so I hope the next SNAP Agency book is due out soon!

'Choose fear or choose faith, but only one choice will bring peace.'
When I read Natalie Walters' first book, I was hooked on her writing. She has released three books prior to this one and they've all been really good. This time, Walters totally ups her game. Big time.
Fighting terrorism on an international level, Brynn Taylor, a CIA analyst, and Jack Hudson, from the SNAP agency, must race against time to prevent what will play out as a total catastrophe. Then there is the issue of trust, or non-trust, they have with each other. Can they set that aside and work together for the common good?
Pulse-pounding excitement and action-packed, this one is a definite for the keeper shelf. And the secondary characters are great! Well done!
My thanks to Revell Publishing for a copy of this book via Net Galley. The opinion here is my own.
I have read this author's work before and was impressed. In this book she has really upped her game. Her writing style has improved, I am very impressed. I spent too much time reading this past my bedtime but I just couldn't put it down. The plot was intense and I'd compare it to the well known, top authors my husband reads with his thriller books. An intriguing plot, it had all the right elements to keep my attention, lots of action, many law enforcement agencies, terrorism,an international plot, danger around every corner, explosives, murder, etc.etc. This is a high action book that you won't be able to put down! Highly recommended. I can't wait to read the next in the series.
Pub Date 02 Nov 2021 I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Wow what an up-to-the-minute, suspenseful story. I loved getting to know the gang at SNAP Agency as they team with CIA analyst Brynn Taylor. The problem is that Brynn has a history with team member Jack Hudson and when they last saw each other, it wasn’t pretty. They agree to work together to find an Egyptian spy who is missing on US soil. Oh the scary and subversive things they discover. And it is more widespread than they thought. While they are tracking down suspects and uncovering clues, Jack and Brynn are forced to confront their awkward parting. They are both Christians but still find it difficult to connect. Jack: “When our trust lies in the control we think we have, we are saying we don’t trust in the One who is completely in control and completely good.” When it came down to a critical time, Brynn realized that God was her anchor and held her firmly in His hands. The addition of a Princess Bride Movie birthday party was a great break in the tension. Dramatically told story of everything I like in modern suspense: Danger, romance, faith, a quirky but lovable cast of characters and a what-if that could certainly happen today! *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell Publishing on behalf of the author. I was not required to give a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*
This is the first book that I have read by this author and I really enjoyed it. Things started out a bit slowly for me at the beginning of the book, however, there came a point where everything started clicking along and I simply did not want to put this book down.
The worldwide threat in this story seemed credible and the agents and experts attempting to uncover all that was going on felt like real people. I liked the tension between Jack and Brynn. They were both extremely professional and focused on the threat, yet their painful history caused both of them to feel distracted at times as they juggled reemerging feelings for each other. I thought the romantic tension was just the right amount for the story and would have even liked it to have ramped up a bit with maybe an epilogue after the last chapter.
I liked the introduction to the various members of SNAP and I look forward to seeing this group working together in future books.
I'm just going to go ahead and say it...romantic suspense is probably one of my least favorite genres! I KNOW but hear me out...When it comes to world building in a fantasy..im all in, I love complex systems and magic, and political intrigue. I don't know what it is about suspense and like a 24 tv series type setting that makes me zone out. I find myself skipping to the romance parts. I like to watch some 007, or Jack Ryan or mission impossible (like im there in the theater)..but really I would just not rather read about it.
BUT, HOLD UP.
I feel like Natalie Walters did a really great job of making my actually enjoy a suspenseful narrative! It was easy as a reader who doesn't have much experience with the genre to follow along and had some really fun characters to go with it.
This is a book about a second chance at love and found family. I loved the SNAP agency. They really had some great banter and the chemistry between all the characters was really cohesive and fun. There is an underlying terrorism plot that will keep you on your toes in addition to a sweet romance arc. It really gives off a 24 (the tv show) vibe and had great progression of clues leading up to the climax. And while I wanted more romance, I think what was in the book was really sweet and done well.
So I would classify this as a suspense novel with a dash of romance and if this seems like it would be up your alley, I say go give it a try! You never know what genres will surprise you.
*completely clean in content, no language and some light kissing.
I don’t even know where to start… I’m OBSESSED with these characters & this new series!!
This book was so fast paced! A LOT happened and though there were a few moments my head was spinning from trying to keep up, I never missed a beat or anything important.
The chemistry between the SNAP team made me want to hug this book to my chest! I LOVE teams that are more like family. It makes my heart so happy! 💗
Brynn & Jack had history which worked in this story because of how fast it went down. While I feel Jack holding onto the hurt and “not being able to trust Brynn” for 8 years was a little ridiculous (they were both in training for the CIA…they knew their weaknesses would be exploited) I’m glad they had an actual discussion about it and worked to make a relationship work.
I enjoyed them together, though the SNAP team (and Kekoa) took center stage for me. 😍
The “suspense” plot line was one I don’t normally read. Cyber crimes and terrorism (at home & internationally) is not my normal thing. (It kind of freaks me out a bit because it is SO realistic nowadays) BBBUUUUUTTTTT!!! I really enjoyed the behind the scenes look at how our wonderful brains keep our country safe DAILY!
And even though this is a work of FICTION, it did give me an extra appreciation for everyone in any kind of service for this country!
I don’t know what else I can say…I was HOOKED from the beginning! I finished it almost in one sitting and I’m ANXIOUSLY awaiting book 2! This is my favorite Natalie Walters book so far. 😍😍
5/5 stars *I received this book from the publisher**All opinions are my own*
I'm a huge fan of Natalie Walters' stories and so I was super excited to read Lights Out. It was amazing! This story takes place on a national stage which is quite the leap from her other series which was set in a small town. Higher stakes. Larger threats. And unspeakable consequences should Brynn Taylor and Jack Hudson fail their mission. So to say this story was gripping would be an understatement.
The cast of characters was cleverly varied enough that I could easily tell them apart. That said, on many occasions Kekoa stole the show! (I can't wait for his story) The romance was sweet and clean. I enjoyed the snappy banter between Brynn and Jack. The plot was fast-paced and intriguing.
Walters penned another fabulous story that I highly recommend!
*I received a copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Natalie, Natalie, Natalie!!! This book! The idea of a non-governmental agency such as SNAP was so unique and fascinating, and Walters did a fabulous job creating such a fictional agency. As for characters, I fell in love with Jack right away. (Anyone else want his full backstory??) Brynn as well was a very compelling and interesting character and I loved the way their romance unfolded throughout the book. Their joint backstory about their previous romance was rather confusing to me and even after finishing the book, I'm still not sure I understand what exactly happened, which was slightly frustrating after all that romantic tension. ;) But that didn't detract much from my enjoyment of the book. All in all, Walters has written a wonderful new series debut and I cannot wait to see where this series goes!
This book was such a nice change of pace! It’s been a long time since I picked up a suspense book and this one really hit the spot. With characters that are unique, exciting and well rounded, it was such a delight!
It was such an interesting concept. I love the idea of independent agencies such as S.N.A.P. who are unbound by the governmental red tape who can act in conjunction with law enforcement to solve national threats possibly better than our government can. It’s such a fascinating concept and one that I thoroughly enjoyed!
Every single character had something that made them unique and not only were they special, but they grabbed your interest and made you excited for the next book! It was so nice to have such a charming read that was an easy read, but also had so much character depth. I really love books that are character focused and I love how each of these characters had so much that made them unique, loveable and relatable.
If you are a fan of suspense books in general and political/3 letter agency stories in particular, then you will probably really enjoy this book! Highly recommend it!
P.S. YO! Hold the phone… There is a prequel novella they published simultaneously that describes the founding of the SNAP agency and I’m so STOKED I just found it. I’ll be back, apparently I have some reading to do.
This was my first experience reading a Natalie Walters novel and it was definitely a fun experience!
Scripture Connection
We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
Heb. 6:19-20 The first part of Hebrews 6:19 is quoted in the text, and lays the groundwork for the key spiritual theme. I added verse twenty for context about that hope, although the context isn’t discussed in the book. (It’s more about trusting God, without specific emphasis on Jesus.)
Spiritual Themes
The major spiritual theme is trusting in God and, although it wasn’t introduced until about 60% in, there were some really strong, meaningful statements mixed in. (I’ll hold off on direct quotes because I think they’re more powerful in context.)
I think there’s just enough spiritual content to offend a non-Christian (which, honestly, I take as a good sign haha) who is offended by Christian content. As a Christian reader, I wouldn’t have minded seeing a bit more 🙂
What I Liked
The plot was well-paced— not only due to the amount of action, but also because of the mixture of POVs. While many of the chapters alternate between the protagonists’ perspectives, there are also occasional segments through the eyes of secondary characters. This contributed to the mystery and intrigue, while also livening up the plot line. I don’t often see this combination of perspectives, but I feel that Walters pulls it off really well. I would definitely say that this strategy added to, rather than detracting from, the plotline.
The characters were believable. I especially enjoyed Kekoa and his dialogue. Kekoa is Hawaiian and his lines are peppered with dialect. As someone who doesn’t know the language, I felt that the lines read very realistically, like a real person talking. It didn’t feel like “now I will throw in a Hawaiian word.” His lines really flowed, and in that sense I think he was the most “real” character, to me.
Likewise, the action elements were believable and felt realistic. I really hadn’t given a lot of thought about what it would mean to work for an intelligence agency, where so many people’s lives are at stake and the job’s commitments go so much further than a basic 9-5. Although it’s a work of fiction, I feel like Lights Out gave me a glimpse into this world. As Hannibal (an author I really enjoy) says, the “details [are] so real you have to wonder who she’s really working for.”
In a similar vein, I did appreciate the insight that Jack sheds on Brynne’s commitment to her career. He’s concerned about her willingness to risk her life for her job— not because she’s a woman and he’s a man, but because she’s not taking care of herself.
Romantic Content
This is a comparatively “clean” novel. In fact, it might be considered quite clean, by some standards. There isn’t a lot of kissing, but there is a bit of build-up in anticipation of kissing, as well as occasional mentions of the physical attraction.
There’s also some discussion of physical chemistry with one of the characters being described as kissing “like a brother,” but I’d say the discussion was pretty clean.
One thing I did appreciate with regards to the romantic content was a brief discussion about what love is— not just physical attraction, but paying attention to the details of what makes your partner happy. Jack recalls his father brewing tea for his mom every morning and his mom stocking his dad’s favorite chips during baseball season.
Content Notes
The book is about terrorism and there are quite a few deaths, but the violence isn’t graphic.
There was one part that raised a red flag for me, when Brynne is praying for “an anchor” in an extremely intense situation. When Jack appears and she looks into his eyes, she “fe[els] that God is giving her an anchor in the chaos…”.
When I first read this line, the alarm bells were going off when I read the sentence, because it sounded to me like a person was being described as an anchor. After re-reading the scene a few times, I’ll give the author the benefit of the doubt that she is referring to the person as being a symbol of hope in that moment. With that said, I’m very wary of Christian books that put the romantic interest in God’s place (or reference the romantic interest in a verse about God). All this to say, I don’t think the author is trying to make an idolatrous point, but I do have a problem with that specific line and think that it could have been written differently to avoid that ambiguity.
Recommendation Status:
Reader Discretion
This is not quite a book I would recommend without reservation. With that said, I’d feel pretty fine recommending the book, with knowledge of the above disclaimers (especially the anchor thing). Overall, this was a really fun book to read and I am intrigued to see what happens next.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher. Opinions expressed are my own.
W o w. That's all I can say. This is a new and refreshing story idea, and I'm all-in. Walters very artfully weaves together high-stakes suspense with relatable characters and thought-provoking themes on the lengths we'll go for our jobs...or the people we love. Lights Out has a memorable cast of characters, and I really can't wait to read more about characters like Kekoa and the rest of the SNAP team. (Trust me, you'll love Kekoa.) Brynn's easy to relate to and you really end up rooting for her -- and you'll probably love Jack, too. Their relational dynamic is just perfectly done, and it was fun to read as well. Not to mention, Walters weaves great Christian themes into the story with a good amount of care and thoughtfulness, which is refreshing to see. And as a side-note, the pop culture references are absolutely perfect. My goodness.
Basically, if you've read any of Walters' other books, you'll absolutely adore this book. If you're a fan of Christian suspense, you need to pick this one up. Now if you don't mind, I'll be waiting impatiently in the corner for book 2 of the SNAP series...
This book is amazing! I was hooked immediately and didn’t want to put it down! I love the whole team and can’t wait to read more! Natalie Walters does such an excellent job creating characters that make you want to be friends with them! I highly recommend this book and series!

Wow what a ride!!! Let it be known this is the first 5 star suspense I've read in ages.
Natalie Walters is a new-to-me author. My sister has her first series but I'd never gotten the chance to read those yet, and what a shame because after this book, I'm sold. Just give me more Kekoa and I'll live happily ever after (and based on that sneak peak of book 2, I'm guessing we're getting a lot more of him!!!).
And did I mention, the whole story takes place over one week. At first I was worried the story would be paced very slowly, but it really does read like an episode of a TV show! Oh, and I could not predict for anything how it would end - except for one detail, which I picked up on right away and waited the entire book for it to make an appearance.
I fell for the entire SNAP team - they feel like family now. The banter - check. The snark - perfection. I felt like all the side characters had stories to them that I really want to uncover, which I'm hoping means they all get a book dedicated to them!
I'm not a fan of second-chance romance, but Natalie hit it out of the park on this one. The ending wasn't all crazy with proclamations of love, rather it left the main issues resolved but allowed for time to see where things would end up. Sometimes I feel like the issue that drives the couple away in the first place doesn't really get resolved properly, but that's not the case with this one.
Seeing as this is a romantic suspense, there is moments in the story that revolve around the romance arc. Some readers might think it detracts from the suspense, but I enjoyed the reprieve and getting to know Brynn and Jack a little better. And also, their interactions together are pure entertainment.
Random side note, Jack Hudson reminds me of the character in the TV show Sue Thomas, FBEYE, because they share the same name. Please tell me I'm not the only one haha.
Honestly, for not knowing what I was going into, I was blown away by the writing, the detail, the intensity... and I'll sound like a broken record but I really did feel like I was sitting down with an episode of a TV show, except in book format. I've only come across one other book that felt that exact same way (in a completely different genre) and I wish there were more! And oh my goodness that ending was killer!!
After reading many suspense books I kind of fell out of love with the genre, and never really enjoyed the ones I'd read. Don't get me wrong, those books were all good, but Light's Out was the book that surprised me - and I think it's because of the style it's written in. I fully recommend this book to any suspense-lovers out there, and even those who have yet to try out a romantic suspense. You won't regret it!
I received a copy of Light's Out from the publisher for review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own. A positive review was not required. Seriously, I loved this book.
Natalie Walters has quickly become one of my favorites within the Christian suspense genre, and fellow devourers of this genre are definitely not going to want to miss out on Lights Out, the first book in her brand new The SNAP Agency trilogy. I wasn't quite sure what to expect going into this one, but I was quickly pulled into the developing story, and easily grew to love this new cast of characters that really grew to feel like old friends by the time I finished the story.
I enjoyed that this one is a second chance romance, and also enjoyed the fact for most of the story, the romance actually takes a back seat to the impending terrorism threat that Brynn Taylor must work to dismantle with her ex Jack Hudson, and his team from the SNAP Agency. The stakes are high, the threats are real, and the team may have stumbled upon something more dastardly than they ever could have expected.
I personally loved how the author used the high stakes to emphasize that we can't ever handle these things alone, and faith in our Mighty Savior is always the only way through it. I also surprised myself by loving every single character on the SNAP team, and I truly can't wait to read each of their upcoming stories. However, I must agree with the general consensus that Kekoa was the absolute best, and made a great story an ever better one in my opinion. I loved his never ending enthusiasm, and his positive outlook on any situation they manage to find themselves in.
This book was everything I've come to know and love from Natalie Walters, and is an explosive start to her new series. I definitely recommend this one to anyone who is a fan of Christian suspense. I have to add one last tidbit and state that this book heavily reminded me of one of my all time favorite TV shows, Sue Thomas FB Eye, and I loved that! I definitely cannot wait to continue on with reading the rest of the series, and I truly think the author hit it out of the ball park once again!
Final Rating: 5/5.
Thanks so much to Revell Publishing for allowing me to read and review this!
I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher (Revell) as part of the Revell Reads Blogger Program. I was not required to give a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Really enjoyed the suspense in this one! The cyber security plot was really unique, and I loved watching Jack and Brynn together. They were both kind of frustrating at times, but the SNAP team was really fun!
Mmkay. *deep breath* That was what I call a letdown.
I enjoyed Brynn! A lot! I loved her get-it-done attitude and the way she wasn't afraid to work at her goals. Though I may not be as driven as she is, I live around people that are, and I sooo understood her shock when everyone took a weekend break. (Was I a bit shocked too? Um, yes. Still not sure if I agreed with them, but Jack made a good point, so I couldn't exactly argue.)
I really liked Jack. His sense of responsibility. His struggle to overcome past feelings and move forward. I loved his happy-go-lucky attitude (though not nearly as happy-go-lucky as Kekoa) and the way he jumped into everything with a positive attitude.
The suspense was epiiiiic. Like, all of the bad dudes and how they tied in to the plot confused me a liiiiitle bit, but other than that, it kept me on my toes. (well...not literally. But ya get my drift.) I especially loved it when Brynn teamed up with Lyla; they made a formidable duo. And Lyla was one of those characters that amused me and annoyed me at the same time, but I adored her for it anyway.
And her + Garcia? Classic. Iconic. Poor dude got majorly friend zoned, but I loved his attitude. (Now that I think about it, there really wasn't anyone on the team that I didn't like.)
And shall I talk about the InjURiEs?? People got poisoned. Shot. Bones broke. Ended up in the hospital. It was great. (wow, Kate, love the priorities there)(also I feel like every time a book involves injuries, I have to make some sort of crack about my priorities)
So. What didn't I like? Um...well...y'all know I'm not a romance fan. If something is categorized as romantic suspense, I expect there to be romance, and I expect there to be suspense. I expect people to do their jobs, and then explore a relationship. What I don't expect is for people to be walking into a potential ambush, guns at the ready, unable to stop thinking about kissing the person next to them. And every moment in between. Really, y'all. It was just...too much. Sparks were flying every which way c o n s t a n t l y, and when one moment they refused to trust each other, the next moment it's "LeT mE KIsS YoU" (can you tell I'm not a fan of enemies to lovers?)
And then the spiritual aspect. Brynn and Jack are Christians. But, as often happens, they kinda walked out on God due to their jobs, past hurts, etc. and then realize that they need to fix that. Fine. I'm okay with that. But the fact that they just kinda mention it in passing and then there's never really any conclusion to that? Like...it would have been better not to mention it at all, I think, than to just gloss over it and give the impression that the mention of God and faith is only because the publisher is Christian.
Someone is going to love this book and learn from it and have it touch them. I just am not that person.
*I received a copy of this book from the publisher for promotional purposes. All thoughts are my own.
Lights Out was an action-packed read! I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know these new characters and loved the banter between the SNAP team.
The suspense was great. I enjoyed following along as the team tried to figure out what was going on and there were some moments that I didn't know what was going to happen. The characters definitely had some SUPER close calls.
All in all, Lights Out was a great read and I recommend to fans of this genre.

Lights Out by Natalie Walters is the first book in a new series. It starts with a bang and it really never lets up. It is full of action, suspense and five amazing characters who make up the team called SNAP. Oh, and a romance as well. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I can't wait to read the next book.
Ahhh so good! Literally had me so stressed I was anxiously tapping my fingers lol. But such a good plot!! And the characters were literally amazing!!! Anyways such a good book would def recommend.
Some faith elements sprinkled throughout as well. Only qualm I had was that Jack was in a sort of relationship and didn’t end it before starting to have feelings and considering kissing Brynn. Also one person they had to get rid of stating it was for the mission, but I just didn’t like that as a Christian. More personal than anything though! Would 100 percent recommend… 10/10!!!
This book was very different from Natalie’s previous series, I honestly wasn’t sure if I would like it but now I think I might have liked it even better then her other books.
She has created a great cast of characters that will engage you and leave you wanting to read whatever comes next in this series.
There was a lot going on and the questions surrounding the events will keep you wanting to read to see what is happening.
A copy of this book was given to me by the publisher. All opinions are my own.
