This is the second book in this series and oh boy, what a series it is. It is a fantastic book that I couldn't put down for even a minute. This story is nail biting and it captivates you while keeping you on the edge of your seat. This is book #2 in the Secrets and the City Series and I would defiantly read book #1 first although you don't have to. This book is just as captivating and very suspenseful as the first.

Fallon is on the DEA task force and is determined to take down all he drug dealers that had ruined a lot of things in her life including her parents. And the drug addiction that has tortured her life because of her parents, parents that once loved there little girl until the drugs took hold and nothing mattered to them. Fallon has a connection to Dillon from the beginning and they have had similar challenging childhoods and they had to do what they had to to survive. Fallon is going to bring them all down. When Dillon first meets Fallon he knows she is different, and when they are trapped in the elevator this is the start of a terrifying and emotional journey for them both. He wants to protect her at all costs but he is hiding a secret that could change everything. (NO SPOILERS)

This book is a thrilling action packed read and I loved every page and I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen. This book is a very emotional read and has a lot of twist and turns and shockers and the suspense is gripping.
I loved this storyline and the story flows perfectly and I loved how this author always kept you guessing. I love how this author writes and her writing style and I love how the nail biting book holds your attention, this really is a great book and an awesome series.

This book is about as intense and mind blowing as a reader could wish to read. Kathy’s first book in the series Deadly Illusions was awesome, but this book was on an entirely different level of awesome.

I’m not going to say much because I don’t want to accidentally spoil anything. Go in expecting an intense, emotional and adrenaline-rush of a read. This book will make you question your feelings and thoughts.

I loved every moment reading this book…it made me gasp out loud, cry, laugh, and hold my breath while my heart pounded nearly out of my chest. I cannot wait for whatever this author comes up with next.

I received an ARC from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

This was yet another thrilling read from this talented author, jam packed with even more suspense and surprises than the first book, if you can believe it.
This was one the best opposites attract book that I've read in a long time, so I couldn't not add it to my top reads of '22.
Seriously be prepared to avoid all adulting until you've read the very last page, as once you start you'll be unable to look away.
And that's all I'm going to say about this book, as talking anymore about either the characters or the plot will dampen the enjoyment and shock value.
Definitely recommend.

✨ “When a gorgeous guy walked into the otherwise empty elevator, I had no idea that in a few weeks, he would kill several men to protect me”

✨ “Addiction didn’t just destroy the user; it hurt everyone they loved, too”

✨ “You might not like what I do for a living,” he said, his mouth distractingly close to mine. “But you know I’d protect you with my life.”

✨ “I’d never hurt you, Fallon,” he said in a deep voice that sent pulses to my heart. “I’ll always do everything in my power to protect you.”

This book *chefs kiss* 🤌🏼 I LOVED the first book (𝑫𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒍𝒚 𝑰𝒍𝒍𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏) and Fatal Cure is even better! I could not put this book down and stop reading! It is a page turner and will have you feel many emotions reading it.

Fallon practically raised herself while both of her parents were addicts. Growing up she had one goal: take down the same kind of men that destroyed her family and her home.

And now, she’s a DEA agent working on a big case hunting down top drug kingpins.

Fallon meets Dillion. Dillion makes her smile and after shutting herself down and out to everyone - Fallon finds herself trusting - and falling for - Dillion. Dillion will do anything to protect and keep Fallon safe.

After a night of love making - Fallon sees something that catches her eye and her veins turn ice.

Fallon has been falling in love with the drug lord she has been hunting. And now, they’re both a target of the most dangerous criminals - and the only hope to live - and get away safely - is to work together.

I received an ARC of this book, but all opinions are my own.

After reading the first book in this series, Deadly Illusions, I could not wait for this second book to come out in the hopes that it delivered the same suspenseful mystery romance, and it definitely did not disappoint. While I found the romance aspect of this book to be more subtle, it worked with the dynamic of the two main characters, a drug syndicate captain and a police officer working on a DEA task force.
From the first chapter this book already had me on the edge of my sit wanting to know what would happen next and questioning everyone's intentions. In the regards of figuring out who was on what side of the conflict, it had a real who-dun-it feel because there was no clear answer and everyone seemed suspicious, which lead to a great reveal at the end.
This book is the second in a series, but it does not follow the same characters as the first. While you could read this book and not the first in this series, the situation and one of the characters from the first book make a small appearance and the story line is mentioned. So, if you're hoping for no spoilers, I would read Deadly Illusions first, and it's worth the read.
I do recommend reading the warnings at the front of these books before reading in case you are uncomfortable with any of the topics that they cover. Kathy Lockheart does a great job though handling tough topics and does it in a tasteful way. In other words, there is a reason for the topics and it's not just added for fluff or shoved in your face.
I can't wait for the third book in this series to come out, and I hope even after this series is finished that Kathy Lockheart will write more books with a similar genre.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

This is my second Kathy Lockheart book, and it didn't disappoint. Kathy, at least in my very short experience, writes very complex characters and challenges them in ways you do not see how they will eve end up together. I have fully enjoyed this series so far.
Fatil Cure grabs hold of you! I was so impressed. DEA Agent with a captain of a gang? How much more complicated can it get.... trust me, it gets more complicated if you can believe it. Fallon and Dillon are both amazing characters. Together, they are fire. The way Dillon wants nothing more than to protect her. Fallon is tough as nails trying to prove herself. There is a tangled web that surrounds them. Honestly, I feel you need to go into this book somewhat blind.

HOLY EVER LOVIN' HELL! Fatal Cure is one thrilling ride that left me exhausted once I devoured every last page in one sitting, and I mean I didn't eat or even adult the day I started it (thankfully my kids are grown LOL). I've gone back & forth about how I would write this review, and I decided that not only would it be short & sweet, but there would be very little detail so I didn't spoil even one thing. I'm telling you, I went through every emotion known to man while experiencing all the chaotic heart pounding suspense that I live for. Obviously this means there are twists coming in hot, and since we have a nasty cartel at work bringing on a kicker of DEA that you already know the action is insane as the law breakers do the dark things they do! I'm so glad the brilliant Kathy Lockheart decided to release her special brand of talent for all of us to benefit from so buckle the hell up buttercup for a thrill ride to get the blood pressure up! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Another wonderfully written story by Kathy Lockhart! I really enjoy her style of storytelling. It’s not my typical read (I gravitate towards light hearted, but spicy romantic books), but I’ve read two of her books now and she may be changing my taste! There is an underlying romantic story, but much more serious nature, with a lot more substance. I look forward to reading book 3.

I was contacted by the author to read this in advance. And let me tell you, I was blown away! I was literally crying in the last few chapters. A story of finding love in the wrong place, dangerous enemies and the redemption that comes when you meet the right person, who can love you like no one else.

Fallon is a young woman with a heartbreaking past. Her parents once doted on her and she was the center of their world. Until a freak accident landed her mom in recovery on pain pills. Unfortunately, that's where the addiction started and it would not end well, as they often don't. Her father fell apart after the death of her mother, and he himself became an addict. Fallon has basically been on her own since she was 11. All grown up now, she's determined to make it as a DEA agent. Her life goal to destroy and raze the drug organizations that decimated her family and others like hers.

On the morning she is supposed to be joining a new DEA task force, she decides to hit the gym to burn off some excess energy. While leaving she takes the elevator and is met with a tall, dark haired and muscular stranger with spellbinding eyes. He introduces himself as Dillon. Suddenly the elevator stops and they soon realize they are in grave danger as there is a fire about to take out the cables holding them up. They manage to get out through the escape hatch at the top and barely make it to the next floor when the fire consumes the cables and the car crashes below them. Once out, Dillon asks her out as a thank you for saving his life. If that's not an opening chapter, I don't know what is!

From here their relationship progresses pretty quickly, as they are both drawn to each other in a way neither can explain. While on their first date they talk about their pasts and inside they both realize that for many years they have pushed others out and that maybe this time it will be different. But all they've built up is about the explode when Fallon starts to uncover shocking truths about her parents, her past and the men she is hunting. She doesn't realize just how close she is to catching the people who destroyed her family. Dillon has enemies, a lot of them. Dirty, cruel and ruthless, people that will blow up entire cities to get their point across. When it's discovered that a major drug cartel is trying to make a move to the states, things heat up. Putting not only her life and Dillon's life in danger but thousands of the people she has sworn to protect. Can Fallon change the course of things and save the lives of those she loves before it's too late?

As I said above the author asked me to read this book. I have already read Deadly Illusions, the first book in this series. I absolutely loved it and was thrilled and honored to be asked to read this one. I love the fact that the author uses real locations that I can look up, it gives a sense that this could be a true story. Dillon is an alpha male, which I'm drawn to and Fallon and Dillon have a love that I know. An electric, "I knew this was my soul mate" kind of love. The last few chapters of this book are so wonderfully written. I was in tears. A romantic, page turner that will keep you guessing until the very end. I very much look forward to more from this author. I agreed to read this book free from the author for an honest review.

5 Stars for this captivating and heartbreaking story!

Hold on tight because this is another wild ride! I loved how Dillon didn't waiver in his feelings for Fallon. He knew it was deadly for both of them to be together, but he never cared about his own safety ... he only cared that Fallon was safe. I felt so sorry for Fallon for her to go from a perfect childhood to one of heartbreak when her parents turned to drugs. The twists and turns had me trying (the operative word) to guess what would happen next. This book is just as intense as the first book and I can't decide which one I like better because they're both exceptional! Ms Lockheart drew me in with well-developed characters and a suspenseful story ... and held me captive till the end. I could not put this book down. I can't wait to see what's next for this author!

Fallon and Dillon are strangers that get trapped in an elevator. When the elevator shaft starts on fire, Fallon refuses to leave Dillon behind because she's a DEA agent and has vowed to serve and protect. By the time Fallon finds out that Dillon is a captain in the very drug organization she is trying to bring down, they have fallen for each other. Dillon had no idea Fallon is a DEA agent, but she is the first person to bring his heart back to life since he was a boy and he's going to protect her with his life.

I received an early copy courtesy of the author in exchange for a honest review.

Holy smokes! The first book in the Secrets & The City Series (Deadly Illusion) had me hooked from the first page and I couldn’t wait to read this next book when it became available. Well, let me say, it far exceeded my expectations! Again, it had me on the edge of my seat and I could not put it down. Dillon and Fallon’s story is incredible and not for the faint of heart. I mentioned in my review of Deadly Illusion that Ms. Lockheart’s writing read like it was written by a well-seasoned author and not a debut author and she has done it again-excellent writing! Well-developed storyline and characters and I honestly think she hit it out of the park with this second book. I loved that it was just as intense as her first book, but so very different as far as the plot and storyline. I don’t want to ruin this read for the rest of you, so I’m not going to get into what happens, just be prepared for another intense, emotional read. If you’re looking for mystery, intrigue, action, suspense, off the charts chemistry between Dillon & Fallon, heart-pounding, nail-biting, blow-your-mind, twists & turns – grab this book! Just make sure you set aside some time because you won’t put it down once you start reading it. I experienced a full range of emotions as I did with the previous book, so be prepared and grab a box of tissues. Ms. Lockheart is fast becoming a one-click author for me and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us in the future!

Once again Kathy Lockheart has rendered me speechless with her books! From page one your attention is grabbed and never let go. She has a way of writing that feels like you are watching a movie instead of reading a book. Dillon and Fallon’s story is truly spectacular to read and I couldn’t put it down. With the familiar places, the realistic drug cartel, and the heartbreaking childhood of Dillion this books transforms you into a world that could so easily be reality. If you enjoy intense love stories, suspense like no other, unexpected twists and writing that is so good you can’t stop reading, then this is the book for you!

I was given a copy of this book for free as an ARC reader and I am leaving this honest review voluntarily.

Not enough actual procedural knowledge of law enforcement to be a convincing crime book.

Not enough actual romance (either relationship building or smut) for it to be a romance book (for those lured in by booktok - it’s not closed door but it should be).

I finished it, and it wasn’t the romance aspects that bothered me as much as the issues I had with the law enforcement side of the book. All I kept thinking was with her history - there is no way she would have passed a background check to work for the DEA - and when you’re thinking that you know you’re reading with scepticism.

FATAL CURE is the second instalment in Kathy Lockheart’s contemporary, adult SECRETS AND THE CITY romantic suspense series. This is soon to be Chicago DEA agent, police officer Fallon O’Connor , and businessman Dillon McPherson’s story line. FATAL CURE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

WARNING: FATAL CURE contains scenes and descriptions of graphic violence and death, and may contain triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from first person perspective (Fallon) FATAL CURE follows the building relationship between soon-to-be DEA agent Fallon O’Connor , and Dillon McPherson. A high rise fire traps two strangers, Fallon O’Connor and Dillon McPherson, in an elevator, an elevator that is about to plummet twenty-six floors taking our story line couple with it. A quick thinking Fallon saves them both, and a whirlwind romance ensues but all is not well in the city of Chicago when the drug trade explodes, and a war with Syndicate and the arrival of the Mexican Cartel ensues with the Chicago PD. As Fallon and her fellow officers begin a search for the people responsible, Fallon’s relationship with Dillon implodes forcing our heroine to make a heart breaking choice between love and her job. What ensues is the building but rocky relationship between Fallon and Dillon, and the potential fall-out when the Chicago PD suspect a mole in their organization, as Fallon and Dillon find themselves the target of the Syndicate and the Baja Cartel.

Fallon O’Connor’s life is the story of nightmares having lived her younger years with addicts and the threat of death every day. Working with the DEA has been a lifelong dream but all is not well within the Agency, and our heroine is targeted from outside and from within. Dillon McPherson’s secrets run dangerous and deep, and he never wanted his work to threaten the woman with whom he is falling in love. Desperate to protect Fallon, Dillon must sacrifice everything he knows, but the fates have other plans for our story line couple.

The relationship between Dillon and Fallon begins in the wake of a fire targeting one or both of our story line characters. Dillon quickly fell for Fallon O’Connor but secrets and lies are about to destroy the building love, secrets Fallon never thought possible. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Fallon’s best friend and fellow office Shane Hernandez; DEA Sargent Marcus Burch, and Agent Proctor; as well as several members of both the Syndicate, and the Baja Cartel. The requisite evil has many faces.

FATAL CURE is a story of drugs, addiction and family; power and control; betrayal and vengeance; secrets and lies, forgiveness and love. The premise is intriguing, twisted and tragic although I suspected the twist very early on .The characters are energetic, charismatic and troubled; the romance is seductive and captivating.

Fallon is a DEA agent, unstoppable when it comes to reaching her goals and busting the drug organizations of Chicago. Growing up, life was far from easy with two drug-addict parents which is why she takes her job and hunting down criminals so seriously. When asked to be part of the task force to help dismantle Chicago's largest drug organization yet, Fallon can't say no.

Dillon has two rules: never to fall in love and never get caught. When he finds himself trapped in the elevator of a burning building with Fallon, she saves his life and captures his heart. The two strangers have an instant connection and start to fall in love, when Fallon finds out that Dillon is the guy she and her coworkers have been looking for all along.

This is a love story unlike any I've ever read before. The suspense and tension is top notch and I seriously could NOT stop thinking about this book!! Dillon had me totally swooning over his love for Fallon and I couldn't get enough of it. I haven't read the first in the series yet since both can be read as standalones, but I will definitely be prioritizing it soon and looking forward to the third installment coming out in August!

This is available in hardcopy and on Kindle Unlimited, so don't pass it up!

Thank you Kathy Lockheart and Give Me Books PR for the ARC!!

★★★✰ 3 1/2 Stars (took a star away due to excess profanity)

Not an easy review to write. I loved the heart-pounding storyline but almost quit reading early in the book due to the abundance of profanity. I’m not talking about everyday cursing, I’m talking about profaning the Lord’s name… over and over, when it wasn't necessary. I found one time that possibly justified it, due to the character using it, however most times it was used like everyday language.

As for the story, it has a definite good vs evil slant …. Mexican cartel drugs lords trying to overtake a city and then the entire USA. They always seem to be a step ahead of the DEA. How are they getting their information?

The two main characters have secrets to hide, conflicts to battle and contradictions to overcome. Thus when exposed, the situations become intense and dramatic. Is the ‘bad guy’ really the good guy? Can love win out? What happens in life and death situations? Expect a roller coaster of emotions as you turn the pages. There are many plot twists ahead.

4.5 Stars!

Special thanks to Kathy Lockheart for giving me a chance to read and review an ARC of this story

Fatal Cure was a brilliant sequel to Deadly Illusion, and this time around the story was even more action packed and riveting. Right from the get-go, it is a story ridden with suspense, action and plenty of edge-of-the-seat moments that were absolutely amazing. Dillon and Fallon were beautifully flawed yet strong protagonists who were such a joy to read about, and their chemistry was insane! I could not put down this book for even a second (and yes, I had to pull an all-nighter).

If you loved Deadly Illusion, you are going to love this one even more.
