Wendy Monica Winter, M.Ed., is an award-winning author who lives with her husband where the mountains meet the sea on the west coast of Canada. Wendy enjoys bouncing around like Mamma Kangaroo. You can spot her on the local mountains bouncing on her mountain bike and even her skis! She loves exploring new cultures and countries on our beautiful planet. In fact, travel inspired her to write her first book. While teaching in Perth, Australia, Wendy came up with the story, Where’s My Joey?. Her second book, Where’s My Monster?, was released in 2022; her third book is on its way, so stay tuned for more exciting adventures.
This is a children's book that I read to my twin boys. I found this book so cute, and it really made my laugh out the end, and both my boys where laughing at the end too. I loved the pictures so much. The Mom Kangaroo looks everywhere for her little Joey, and of course her little Joey is in the last place she looks. It is so cute. I won a kindle edition of this book from Goodreads Giveaway, but this review is 100% my own opinion.
A cute book that can be used to introduce many exotic Australian animals to kids.
Mamma Kangaroo can't find her little Joey and searches everywhere she can think of for her little one. In the process, she meets many animals native to her Australian land. But she forgets to search one important place. Can you guess which it is?
The illustrations are amazing. I couldn't believe that the artist is self-taught. It was brilliant work!
The language is very simple and the book can be easily used for read-alouds at home or in school.
All in all, a sweet book with plenty of lovely animals and vivid sketches. Definitely recommend to little animal lovers.
4 stars.
The book is free on KU.

Where's My Joey? by Wendy Winter follows Mrs. Kangaroo, as she searches high and low, from one side of the Australian coast to the other, and even among their friends in the ocean. It is dinner time, but she can't locate him. Follow along on the full color map shown on both the front and back inside covers. You can see that she is becoming more and more concerned when she is informed that Joey isn't there. Of course, she finds him safe and sound in the end, with a nice insight included. Great illustrations and easy for all ages to follow along word by word using their fingers. Highly recommended for family reading time.
This book is so uplifting and beautifully illustrated. Like "Love You Forever" by Robert Munsch it transcends a mere bedtime story. It is a book to be treasured for years. It is a heartwarming story for the child within each of us ... from toddlers to grandparents.
I won this through Goodread's FirstReads giveaways. It's a cute little story about a mother kangaroo looking for her joey. It would be a wonderful introduction to Australian animals, and could be used to compare Australian and Canadian animals for a science unit.
This is a sweet adorable book that teaches children about many unusual animals found in Australia and Canada. A good number of these animals were new to me and this sparked my own learning adventure to learn more about them.
Although, this first appears to be a book for pre-school aged children, I can see it being used in the lower elementary grades to learn about the various animals and their habitats.
I love the funny ending. It is so cute. It reminds me of looking for your glasses when they’ve been on your head all along.
The illustrations are beautiful and give a sense of community between the various animals. I look forward to seeing more books by this author and illustrator.
I received an advance review copy for free from Book Sirens and the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Where's My Joey? by Wendy Monica Winter is a charming picture book that will take children on a journey around the world, meeting an array of animal friends as they help Mama Kangaroo find her little Joey. This is a beautifully illustrated tale that serves as a gentle reminder that what we seek is sometimes far closer than we realize. It is often inside of us. This is a beautiful message, contained within a cheerful and colourful story that I am sure any young reader will delight in and relish. This one is destined to become a bedtime favourite. Recommended.
Thank you to BookSirens and author Wendy Winter for providing me with a copy to read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Where’s My Joey? by Wendy Monica Winter is a cute, cute story. Roxana Antochi beautifully illustrated this adorable book.
I fell in love with all the pictures. However, my favorite illustration is one of an ocean. The colors are so pretty and soothing. The creatures, for instance, the whale, clownfish, all the sea creatures, plus the vegetation, are gorgeous!
Children will learn about animals in Australia and some in Canada, too. There were a couple of animals I wasn’t familiar with that I discovered also! (I remembered a song about the Kookaburra, which is a bird, that I learned when I was younger, too.)
Where’s My Joey? is a fun book to savor and read over and over again.
I received Where’s My Joey? from Book Sirens. However, I was under no obligation to post a review.
This book is very well illustrated that includes, maps of Australia, and unique animals that inhabit the area. I plan to share this book with my second grade students and 4 year old daughter.
Cute picture book about a mama kangaroo looking for her little one. In her search, she encounters several animals indigenous to Australia. Love the illustrations.
Very cute and adorable book for little ones to read. Or you read to them. I think younger children would love this book. I thought it was cute. That her little one was where he always been ♥️ ◀️ . This book releases on January 11th. I was given this as an ARC.
I review a fair amount of children's picture books, and the illustrations in this book really make it stand out. They are vivid, detailed, and absolutely beautiful. The story is about a kangaroo mother who is looking for her baby kangaroo named Joey (which happens to be Australian slang for a young marsupial, especially baby kangaroos). She sets out on her quest and meets a lot of other animals native to Australia, some of which will not be well-known to American children... I know I didn't recognize a few. It would be a great book to introduce young children to unusual animals like kookaburra (a type of Aussie/New Guinean kingfisher) and a quokka (a cat-sized wallaby). If a child already has an interest in Australia, it would be a great read, too. It could certainly spark an interest in finding out more about the different animals as well as Australia. Surprisingly, the book was not written by an Aussie but rather a Canadian! Highly recommended.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
This one is a 2.5 for me. I would imagine that many mothers and caregivers can relate to Mama Kangaroo's plight. After all, no matter how carefully parents watch over their offspring, bad things can happen and those youngsters can disappear--or in this case, get misplaced. When Joey doesn't respond to Mama's calls for dinner, she sets out to find him. In her search, she looks for him near and far, in the fields of flowers and ocean, talking to various animals, and even covering unfamiliar terrain. But one of the animals offers her a helpful tip, and Mama Kangaroo realizes that Joey has never been far away at all. There are two large maps of Canada in the book so that youngsters can explore them in order to identify certain places and animals typically found on that continent. This sweet story would be a good read aloud. I just wish there had been more pictures and more places that Mama Kangaroo searched. The artwork effectively captures Mama's growing frustration and concern over the whereabouts of her child.
Delightful, little children's book that is also beautifully illustrated!
As Ms. Kangaroo searches for her Joey, she encounters many animals, some of which are unique to the Land Down Under. It's an opportunity for young children to be entertained by her storytelling while also seeing adorable illustrations of these animals. There are also some beautifully illustrated maps of Australia and the surrounding vicinity that will help young ones to visually place this continent in the context of the oceans that it's found in, as well as some of the animals that inhabit it. There is one at the beginning of the book and one at the end.
What a wonderful children’s book. I could not get over the illustrious artwork throughout, and careful attention to detail. The colors, lighting, and compositions were all fantastic. I thought of how the hidden message could also portray our own happiness. Wherever we search, our best bet is always searching within ourselves. Beautiful story and artwork. I’d definitely purchase a print copy to read to my children in the future.

A mama kangaroo goes searching her missing Joey. Along the way, she visits some amazing animals in distant (relative to me) continent of Australia - and even makes a brief stop in Canada! And the vibrant artwork brings these locations and creatures to life.
This is a fun, engaging story for kids. It's also a great way to spark an interest in geography and/or zoology. It also has an endearing - and enduring - message.
This is a short, beautifully illustrated book for the young child. It is a great way to introduce unfamiliar animals to the child as well as emphasizing a mother's love. I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway for this honest.
In this beautiful, beautiful picture book, Mama Kangaroo is searching high and low for her social Joey. She goes to all of his favorite spots and visits all of his friends in an effort to bring him home for dinner, but where, oh where could Joey be?
These illustrations are absolutely stunning. The style reminds me a lot of Winnie the Pooh or Beatrix Potter, and in fact, the storyline brought back memories of Pooh’s Heffalump Movie (2005). It’s really sweet.
I also loved that the animals that Mama Kangaroo encounters are very unusual and different than your typical children’s books animals, for example, echidnas, kookaburras, and quokkas. This provides excellent educational opportunities for both parents and teachers!
There are also two gorgeously illustrated maps in both the front and back of the book showing where each of these animal families live for even more educational opportunity! Plus, there’s a maze activity in the back of the book, and (better if you have a physical version rather than the kindle version) a Spot the Difference activity between the two previously mentioned maps. To further maximize the fun, there is a companion coloring book to go with the story!
Overall, I think Where’s My Joey? is a book worth adding to your picture book collection!
I received this book from the author for free, however, this review is voluntary. All comments and opinions are entirely my own.
Australia. Mommy Kangaroo is hollering at Joey (Kangaroo) telling him it’s time for dinner. Mommy Kangaroo had to go look for him. Mr. Emu & Ms. Echidna said they had not seen Joey. Whale, Turtle, Ray & the Kookaburra family hadn’t seen him either. Mrs. Kangaroo, Mr. Quokka, & Mrs. Koala weren’t much help other.
Will Mommy Kangaroo find Joey?

An awesome book cover, great hand-drawn colored pictures, charming illustrations & proper font & writing style. A very professionally written children’s (preschool/elementary; MS/HS age) storybook. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters, settings, etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great children’s educational presentation, movie, an animated cartoon, or better yet a mini-TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is an extremely easy rating of 5 stars.

Where’s My Joey by Wendy Monica Winter is an Australian-centric tale of a mother Kangaroo, who fixes supper and then realizes she can’t find her little Joey to feed. She meets with a menagerie of Australian native fellow animals in her hunt for her child. (Now, in the United States, most likely this might result in multiple reports to DCFS or the police, but all the beasts seem pretty relaxed.)
We had fun with it. I got to do multiple voices. There’s some fun looking activities after the story for young children and colorful maps of Australia~a nice bonus!
No spoilers here, lol. But, I will note that Park discovered how to make the pages move on the iPad and that I appreciate getting this digital copy through a Goodread’s drawing.
Superbly presented children’s book with a great mix of animal characters to keep kids intrigued as the story unfolds. I love the deep vibrant illustrations, which younger children will enjoy studying as they identify all the different features (especially the beautifully detailed map). This book has a magical feel and should not be missed...
My grandkids LOVE this book. The illustrations are incredibly beautiful and the story line is simple and profound at the same time. This book has lead to interesting conversations about what we are looking for outside of ourselves but in the end we have to find it inside. BEST PICTURE BOOK I'VE EVER READ.
This book is so beautifully written and illustrated. A happy story about a mom looking for her baby with an education about Australia and it’s animals. It includes some games and a link to more online. Definitely recommend this for children of all ages!
I read this book for the 2021 Goodreads Choice Awards. Where's My Joey? is such a sweet picture book about a mother kangaroo searching all across Australia to find her Joey. The most beautiful part about this book were the illustrations - they were stunning. I love how many animals and settings the book showed. It's a very engaging book with a cute ending.
