I had worked in the Software field for about 5 years. I quit my software job in the year 2018 and decided to pursue my passion for sports and writing. I along with some of my friends started a Sports based NGO (Non-Profit Organization) named Play2Discover. Through our NGO, we have been supporting underprivileged children to excel in their sporting activities.
Currently, I am volunteering for another sports-based non-profit organization named Victory Sports Foundation.
My first book titled ‘Play2Discover: Improving Lives through Sports’ (50 pages) was self-published on January 9th, 2021. This book is an anthology of short stories. It comprises ten fictional stories which focus on connecting certain aspects of sports with real-life scenarios.
I have written 3 more books across different genres:
My second book titled ‘The Wheel Breaker’ (62 pages) was self-published on March 19th, 2021. This book falls under the Mystery Drama genre and unlike my first book, this one has a single storyline.
My third book titled ‘When You Start Seeing It’ (60 pages) was self-published on June 29th, 2021. This book is a collection of eight Supernatural Thriller short stories.
My fourth book titled 'The Divine Dark & The Evil Light' (54 pages) was self-published on January 11th, 2022. This book is a coming-of-age drama with fantasy elements.
Emotional and compelling, The Wheel Breaker by Vinod Balan offers much more than just a suspense story.
Sid is a reporter whose passion for interesting articles makes him chuck his well-paid jobs in the industry and do freelancing without too much interference and hassle. Given a chance by a publication to go to the National Film Archive of India in Bangalore, Sid’s life undergoes a massive change as he comes across a film by a group of friends that never saw the light of the day in its time. The film made by Mahinder and friends sweating out for 5 long years without much help from the film industry is a political intrigue that would have been an eye-opener, so why was it buried and never released, and what happened to all the people connected to the movie?
The short story in 60 pages conveys simple lessons for life that I never expected, the concluding chapter especially reiterating the human fault of never giving due credit in their time and always giving recognition posthumously. The story that alternates between events in the past thru Mahinder and the current times thru Sid has a suspenseful setting.
The author has left it to the imagination of the reader to decipher the story of the movie that is referred to as political but kept vaguely undefined and I loved that aspect of it. Crisply and shortly, the author sets the tone for the story and unravels the puzzle of the past and its far-reaching consequences into the present.
Diverting 🌧️ 🌧️ 🌧️ 🌧️
This review is published in my blog https://rainnbooks.com/, Goodreads, Amazon India, and Twitter.
First of all thank you Vinod for letting me know about this precious gem. Really liked reading this book. This book is about Sid a rich dad's good boy who does not want to follow his dad's step starts freelancing journalism and in such one assignment he is introduced to mahinder. Mahinder a new bee in the film industry and has directed a movie with new actors wants to release the movie what are his struggle is in the book. How Sid's and Mahinder's life intervenes is the story of this book. Author has beautifully presented the chapters one dedicated to Sid and other to Mahinder. Overall I would say a short precious Goodreads. 🙂
I would like to appreciate the author for writing a kind of story. I booked this book from a post by the author in Goodreads site and I am glad I did so. Thanks, Vinod, for such a nice book, short and complete. Sid is a self-built kid of a business tycoon, not interested in the family business he wishes to become a journalist. After failing in a couple of media companies, he decides to be a freelancer, which does not bring a lot of success to him. Sid happens to get his hands on an old unreleased film, when he watches the film and gets the details about the same, he is shocked and develops a lot of interest in it. Though he was having his own stress issues and strange dreams, he is works over times to learn more about the movie, the people who made it and why such a master piece was never released. The movie context is set in 60’s but the content of the movie is way too ahead of that time and is relevant even today. The movie develops a lot of interest in Sid. After a lot of research and efforts he could catch up with a few contacts and also gets the necessary authentications to release the movie. Sid faces a lot of set back to release the movie so he ends up posting it on a friends YouTube channel, which gets a lot of appreciation. The story has a parallel of the efforts that went in, in making the movie. A group of friends go though a very tough time to make the movie, 5 years of effort with no help from any film industry, they create the movie on their own. They some how influence a producer, a well-known figure in the industry to sponsor the release of the movie. After a lot of setbacks and personal loss for the members involved in making the movie and the producer, the movie never gets on to the screen. With the initiative of Sid the movie eventually reaches the audience. What interested me the most, in the book is the way both the parallels are eventually linked, and more than that, the context of the movie, though there was no detail of the movie in the book, yet the interest developed by the author over the movie has interested me a lot. Also, the way the whole story is presented is also very impressive. A good, interesting and involving read.
The plot is appropriately paced, the mystery of the visions and its connection to the story is well explained.. overall a very interesting read for mystery loving audience..
**The Wheel Breaker** by Vinod Balan is an emotional and gripping story that blends suspense with meaningful life lessons. Sid, a freelance reporter, leaves the security of well-paying jobs to follow his passion for writing unique stories. His journey takes a turn when a publication sends him to the National Film Archive of India in Bangalore. There, Sid discovers an unreleased film created decades ago by Mahinder and his friends, who spent five years crafting a politically charged masterpiece that never saw the light of day. The mystery of why the film was buried and what happened to those involved pulls Sid into a web of intrigue that changes his life.
What struck me most about this book was how it effortlessly alternates between Sid's present-day investigation and the struggles of Mahinder’s group in the past. The film’s content, though vaguely described, carries themes that remain relevant even today. As Sid uncovers the truth, his personal challenges and determination mirror the filmmakers' perseverance. The story builds suspense with each chapter, culminating in a satisfying conclusion. Sid’s eventual decision to release the film on a friend’s YouTube channel showcases his ingenuity and resolves the story in an unexpected yet fulfilling way.
The parallel narratives of Sid’s journey and the filmmakers’ struggles are skillfully intertwined, leaving a lasting impression. Despite the lack of detailed descriptions about the film’s plot, the author succeeds in sparking curiosity and making the story impactful. Vinod Balan’s writing is crisp and engaging, and this book stands out as my favorite of his works so far. It took me some time to get into the story, but the payoff was well worth it. I’m eagerly looking forward to reading more from this author, whose ability to weave twists and thought-provoking themes continues to impress.
