This is a sneaky way of reading the Bible or at least getting your daily dosage of it. This book can be read over and over again and each time it can be applicable to you in a different way. I would strongly recommend it. I'm not very good at opening up the Bible and reading it. This is a fun way to do it.

Jesus Listens, by Sarah Young, is a daily devotion that offers thoughtful, biblical reflections on a particular theme, as well as related Scripture. It touches on the relevant topics of stress, anxiety and the uncertainty that we all face these days from a Christ-centered context.

With any daily devotional, some offerings are better than others, but most are truly encouraging, insightful and felt serendipitous, and exactly what I needed on that day. My book has ample highlights from quotes that spoke to me. I enjoy all of Sarah Young’s devotions, but this was one of my favorites.

I enjoy Her devotionals!

I like that this devotional is from my perspective, and I also read “Jesus Calling” to get Jesus’ perspective. What I wish were different is to have the scripture references at the end of each day were complete quotes.

I recommend this to any Christ Follower who would like help with direction in their prayer life.

It’s been 18 years since Sarah Young published Jesus Calling, the bestselling devotional that broke barriers with its simplicity, authenticity, and comforting message. It was a message that was both general enough to apply to everyone and specific enough to be meaningful to everyone. Now, Young has taken that voice and given it new life in a brand-new daily devotional of written prayers in Jesus Listens.

I really like this idea of developing a devotional that focused on prayer—on one’s relationship with God—over inspirational thoughts or insightful knowledge about God. It seems like a lot of devotionals (even one’s I’ve enjoyed) focus on the latter and the format of a daily devotional just often can’t go deep enough to do that sort of content justice. But Jesus Listens is all about prayer. It’s one page a day, beginning by invoking God’s name and then three simple paragraphs of prayer. You could easily pray this aloud as a liturgy in less than five minutes a day.

Prayer can be a struggle. Jesus Listens gets you started. It’s not a substitute for your own words to God, but through Sarah Young’s prayers you’ll find yourself praying for and about things you never would have thought on your own. More than a devotional, Jesus Listens is a primer on developing a life of prayer. Following the example set by Sarah Young, you’ll be led into both the mystery and simplicity of talking with Jesus.

One of the things I appreciated about Jesus Listens is that it’s evergreen. You can use this devotional year after year and begin it at any point you want without having missed anything. With the exception of Advent and Christmas, the prayers are fairly neutral in referencing different holidays or events which may fall on different days in different years. It sets itself as separate from the rest of life and feels no need to connect itself to the events of any specific day, making it refuge to escape the day if that’s what’s needed.

Each prayer ends with a series of Scripture verses that are either paraphrased or quoted in the prayer. These portions are notated in the book through the use of italics. This isn’t altogether clear at first, but became noticeable after a while. I appreciate that Scripture was incorporated into the prayer in a way of showing how we can speak God’s word back to him by way of conversation. One warning, however, (and I don’t have any specific post in mind) is that one should always be wary of taking single verses out of their historical/cultural context and dropping them into a modern context. Overall, I think Jesus Listens manages to keep from misusing Scripture in that way, with the references being analogies or symbolic.

I finished this one a bit early---but it is one of the best daily devotional books that I have ever read. It spoke to me in so many ways, opening my eyes to see myself more clearly and to understand God's grace more deeply. It is helping me to stop relying on my limited self but instead to be still and let God be God. One of the biggest lessons for me is to see that all the things in my life happening to me, good things, bad things, things I am trying to "solve", things that I am blaming for the troubles in my life that I am trying to avoid or undo or resolve in ways that will keep me from suffering, or suffering quite as much----well, sometimes those things aren't about me at all. Maybe I am meant to ride them out to the best of my ability because it helps someone else. Those threads that I so desperately attempt to clip might be the weavings of someone else's miracles. So yeah, I should let God be God and know that he won't abandon me as He works with the next person over. He is more than big enough for us all.

This daily devotional is exceptionally good, and especially useful in setting my mind on things above. It is helpful and practical. In one, the author states that she wants to become more preoccupies with Jesus, because her usually tendency is to the set on herself - her needs, desires, goals, looks, etc. So it is easy to think, yes, that's me, too. Then there are short Scriptural suggestions. I especially liked how she opens and closes the prayer with descriptive, creative words, like, "In your ---Name, Jesus." These words include liberating, loving, triumphant, glorious, restful, delightful - what a wonderful way to worship! I look forward to the next book the author writes!

Fantastic book

Love the book. I purchased the book for myself in Kindle version. I then purchased print copies for my friends and Sunday school class. Everyone has expressed that they are reading and enjoying the book daily. They are making comments about how the prayers are exactly what they needed for the day.

I have mixed feelings about this book. Initially I really loved the prayers, and found the words to be comforting and uplifting. But then in one of the entries, the author wrote “I confess that I’m on the brink of rebellion—precariously close to shaking my fist in Your Face.” Those harsh words written in prayer to our Lord and Savior were like a slap in the face and my heart just wasn’t in it anymore.

This is a great a wonderful companion to the "Jesus Calling" devotional. Here, the author gives prayers we can pray to Jesus while he listens to us. In Jesus Calling, we hear what Jesus says to us. Another contemplative approach to prayer, the author still focuses on three or four themes for the whole devotional year. Other than the repetitive nature of some of the prayers, this could be a great resource for a yearly devotional.

Jesus call to us but he listens too!

This book has been very inspiring. I have read it daily for two years. It has helped me through a time of loss and illness. It is wonderful to know God listens to our prayers and always answers them. Sometimes in surprising ways . If this is the first time you are reading a Sarah Young devotional. Start with Jesus calling first and follow with Jesus listens. Both are wonderful. I think I will read both together this year

Brilliant Read

I do not know how Sarah Young does it, but every day, the devotions AND readings spoke directly to my heart. I send the devotionals out to others with a discussion on her writing, and the power of sharing showed me that her devotions are universal. Every day someone would write back telling me how much they needed to hear both God's words and her reflection. Absolutely recommend!

Sarah’s first book, Jesus Calling, was a game changer for me. I literally taped the spine with packing tape because I read through it so many times, and I’ll probably read through it again next year. I gave several as gifts too. This book is fine, but it did not have the impact of book one. The sequel is rarely as good as the original.

I really appreciate Sarah Young's work. I find these devotionals often really hit the nail on the head. My favorite is her first one Jesus Calling. This one is more in a prayer format and so didn't quite have the same impact for me. But there is always a lot to think about in these wonderful readings.

I enjoyed the way this book was laid out - with the prayer for the day and the supplemental Bible verses. The Bible verses are woven in the prayer and I really enjoyed opening up my Bible after reading the prayer to see where her inspiration for the day came from.
