This is actually the main rulebook for a role playing game set in the medieval period. It is historically based with one exception: everything the people of that time believed to be true—angels, demons, alchemy, fantastical creatures—is true. Its an enjoyable premise and the rules system is quite elegant. I actually managed to get a group together long enough to run through an adventure of my creation. It was fun, but also time consuming. I guess that’s why I spent much more time thinking about role playing games than I actually do playing them.
The version of Ars Magica that I enjoyed the most was published previous to White Wolf's World of Darkness and generated some of the concepts that WW would expand upon in Vampire and Mage. I loved this setting. Anyone who loved Mage: The Ascension should look at finding a copy.
I loved the magic system in this game, allowing players to create their own spells spontaneously. I wasn't as thrilled with the troupe-style play that only allowed one or two players at a time to play the magi that were the heart of the game.
