A single mom afraid to love, a dangerous legend and a monster who will do everything to protect the family he cares about.
Diesel is notorious for being the biggest, strongest and most protective basilisk of the group. But he's also still figuring out the whole "mate" thing. That is, until an assignment to a curious corner of Texas brings him face-to-face with a curvy woman with flame-red hair and wary eyes. And though the monster inside him roars to claim her, it's clear she isn't looking for a partner. Or so it would seem.
Morgan Seward is just trying to get by as a single mom. But when she watches a man turn into a gigantic beast in order to fight off a vicious creature attacking her home, the whole world feels like it’s ending. But then she meets him in person, and all that changes. And though she tries to fight her attraction to him, his intense protectiveness is matched only by his rugged good looks. But love isn’t safe for Morgan, even if Diesel is the ideal man in every way.
Fun evenings and cute moments quickly turn into steamy nights of pleasure for the two lovers, as Diesel realizes he’s found his reason for being in this harsh new world. But Morgan’s past still haunts her, the memories of what she’s lost almost too much to bear. And to makes things worse, an ancient legend in town is swiftly becoming a dangerous possibility for Diesel and the others. And it will take all the strength and courage the fated couple can muster to fight off the terrifying monsters that threaten to tear them apart.
Terry is the author of over forty bestselling shifter romances. She spends her spare time dreaming of dragons, playing with her pets, and watching sunsets from her home in the mountains alongside her husband (who she suspects would make a great bear shifter). She loves the wild outdoors, her fans, all readers, and getting lost in a great book.

Big Bad Basilisks is a wonderful series.. Diesel is a sweetheart! Very sensitive guy for a basilisk, and I completely love him! Great story.. and a super couple.
I am very happy that Morgan, who is a widow, doesn't wallow in her past life. She quickly realizes that she can see a future for herself and her daughter. Diesel was worried that he wanted a mate so bad he could be projecting his desires into the situation too strongly. Luckily his Basilisk and the other shifters make things more clear for them. Loved it!!
Similar to the first book, I found the final battle a little anti-climactic, but the overall journey was fun and captivating. I look forward to the last member of the basilisk group finding his mate. -------- Ratings - completed series: #1 Apex Basilisk: ★★★★☆ #2 Primal Basilisk (this book): ★★★★☆ #3 Savage Basilisk: ★★★☆☆
This is an interesting addition to the Big Bad Basilisk series, but I did have a few issues with it. It gets 3 stars from me.
The books in this series can be read standalone, but I wouldn't recommend it. They will be much easier to understand, and much more enjoyable, if you've read the Texas Dragons series first, followed by reading this series in order.
First, the story really needed more character development. I wanted more backstory on both Diesel and Morgan. I also wanted a better understanding of what the basilisks had been doing underground for so many years (hibernating?), and what kinds of monsters they had fought years before (dinosaurs, maybe?).
By the end of the Texas Dragons series, the basilisks had just emerged from underground, and were learning about living as a human in today's world. They had much to learn, and were often very confused about human behavior and relationships -- especially fated mates for shifters. But somehow, by the time this series began, all three of them had learned enough to handle meeting/romancing their fated mates. I found that a little hard to believe, considering the short time they had been living in the human world.
I realize this series is pure fiction and fantasy, but I thought it was odd that the author kind of made up a new description of basilisks. Basilisks in mythology were evil, and were very different from the ones in this series. These basilisks look and behave differently -- and they are actually protectors, not evil creatures.
This book is about Diesel and Morgan. I liked Diesel, and liked that he was slowly learning how to recognize his fated mate. He was even willing to ask for advice on how to romance Morgan, since he knew he had much to learn about relationships/romance. I also liked that he was so good with Morgan's daughter Grace.
Morgan was OK, but her determination to avoid relationships got a little annoying. I get that she was trying to avoid grief like she experienced after her first husband died -- but avoiding any kind of relationship for over 10 years was a bit much. She even tried to break up with Diesel, just because he was in danger. She realized that was a mistake, but still ...
My rating system is below. 1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it. 2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws. 3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating. 4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one. 5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.
Morgan notices a large, extremely muscular man standing a ways down the road. She is waiting for the school bus to bring her little girl home. But, she has a hard time withdrawing her focus from the man. Why is he there? What is he doing? Who is he? But just then the bus brings her most precious possession home and she is anxious to get her inside. But before she can accomplish that feat, all hell breaks loose. A huge dinosaur looking monster comes up from the ground and the handsome man turns into a mountain with teeth and claws. The dinosaur turns its focus on Morgan and her daughter, but the major mountain with teeth protects them. Diesel cannot let anything happen to the beautiful, curvy redhead and her young one, he has to protect them and this tiny, quaint town. He in on a mission and must stay focused. He feels a strong pull to this little beauty, but he doesn't have a good record when it comes to which woman could be his mate. When he was at The Dragon Claw Ranch he thought every woman he was attracted to was his mate. He soon learned that you only have one mate and he had yet to find his. Even though he felt completely different when he was near Morgan, he didn't want to make a mistake and she probably wasn't his mate anyway. Right? I absolutely love this series. Terry Bolryder has been one of my all time favorite authors for as long as I can remember. I have yet to read anything this woman writes that isn't a ten star plus rating. This series is no different. I am so thankful for all the enjoyment I get from reading these books. In a world that all you hear about is bad news and constant turmoil, this is the perfect getaway.
I love how Diesel acts with Morgan and her daughter Grace. He is so gentle with them and the cat Wendell. Morgan sees Diesel shift first thing to fight off a rock wyvern. She doesn't understand what is happening, but is intrigued by this protective yet gentle giant. Then there are the cultists claiming that a Dragon will return and bestow riches in the believers. The story moves along really quickly.
The pace is breakneck and the tone is uncertain yet hopeful with an action and character oriented storyline that has some steamy scenes. The characters are vibrant and engaging. I can't wait to read Ajax's story! You should probably read at least the Texas Dragons series in order before this one. But to get the full effect of this complex world read the following series in order: Double Dragons box set, Tiger Protectors box set it if you don't like two on one, then start with the Awakened Dragons box set, Rent-a-Dragon box set, Date-a-Dragon box set, Awakened Sea Dragons box set, Dragon Guards of Drakkaris box set, Nightmare Dragons series, Frozen Dragons series, Club Crimson series, Bad Dragons series, Forgotten Dragons series, Wings, Wands and Soul Bonds series, Reclaimed Dragons series, Rogue Dream Fae series, then Texas Dragons series and finally this series Big Bad Basilisks in order. If you like your shifter romances with unusual situations and fascinating characters in a complex world with lots of action, then all of these are for you. Enjoy!
It was a really good story and I loved Diesel. I give it 4.5 stars. I can’t bring myself to give it five stars because of Morgan. I am not a huge fan of prior losses (Morgan being a widow), but I could have understood and be ok with it if it weren’t because even after 10 years of his death, she let guilt and the love she had for her previous husband interfiere on her relationship with Diesel. That was annoying and frustrating specially because Adam is not the kind of man that deserved her love or all that guilt she still felt. He wanted her to abort their baby (Grace- and they fought plenty of times because she did not want to abort) because having a baby was going to interfiere with their future plans. Seriously? He was amazing and a loving person when everything was going accordingly to plan (easy to love when everything is sunshine and flowers), but he actually asked the woman he loved to abort their baby? Talking about Red flags.
I had a really hard time understanding Morgan or how could she feel guilty or feel some kind of love for a man like that.? It really bothered how she let her previous relationship interfiere with her actual relationship with Diesel ( a real man) that cared and loved Grace from the beginning even though she is not his daughter. I did not like that about the book at all. I would have loved it and give it five stars if it weren’t because of Morgan and all her drama.
I have to say that I love Diesel more than Gunnar. It might be because of his interactions with Grace or his insecurity over Morgan being his mate (or not), either way, Diesel went straight to my heart. From Diesel's first appearance in the Texas Dragons series, you could tell that he was a bit different and now that he has settled down and learned more of the modern world, he is settling in to his role as protector.
Very rarely do we see any of Terry's shifters get mates that already have children. That makes this story special from the start. What I enjoyed the most about the story is the relationship building between Diesel and Morgan. The brewing trouble throughout the story and it's antagonist cause some drama but the ending trouble and solution show that compassion and understanding are alive and well in Terry's shifter universe.
As much as I love Diesel, the glimpses into Ajax's psyche that we received in this book, might just make him surpass my all time favorite character - Aegis the Emerald dragon. I cannot wait for Ajax's book.
Terry Bolryder has been a favorite author of mine since I read Double Dragons in 2015 and I look forward to every new release.
A wonderful second book in this simply riveting read, one sitting full of action
This was a wonderful read and it was lovely to read about Diesel and Morgan the main characters who it was simply impossible to fall in love with, they were so sweet and the emotions they had for each other were genuine and honest.
Morgan’s daughter made me think quite a bit when I was reading the book I was trying to decide if she was a shifter or perhaps the shifter gene had skipped a generation in the family, which although unusual may happen on rare occasions.
The story was very focused on these three characters and from start to finish I found it impossible to put the book down until I finished the story, I was totally captivated and had to discover what the final outcome would be.
I am looking forward to future books in this series I am sure that they will be equally as entertaining as the previous two books.
I assure you that you will love every moment of this book it is simply a fantastic read. I voluntarily received and review an Advanced Reader Copy I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the great writing.
Diesel and Morgan - such a swoony sweet shifter romance
I loved the Texas Dragons series and the basilisks who were introduced in them so I am excited to read about their HEAs. Diesel is one of the three basilisks sent to mediate and keep peace when there are shifter issues. He’s only recently shifted into his human form after untold years underground and he has been looking for his mate since he first shifted. Morgan is a single mom living in a small shifter town. After her husband died before her daughter was born she closed herself off from love. From the moment they meet, Diesel and Morgan feel the pull toward each other but they have to overcome Morgan’s past along while dealing with the current danger. On the way to their HEA, Diesel and Morgan experience sweet moments, strong families, sexy times, dangerous situations, and paranormal creatures. Expect to feel all the feels. There is growth for both the main characters, though much more for Morgan than Diesel, as she lets her past and her fear go in order to embrace having a mate and their future together. I am excited to read about the final basilisk.
I liked Diesels story for a few reasons. Diesels whole attitude changed from how he started thinking everyone was his mate. He became thoughtful and patient. Morgan was well a mom who still had not moved on from her husbands death. Grace who is Morgan's daughter is simply a really great addition to this story. I like her curiosity and how she wanted to learn what she could. I also liked how she became this fearless little human after she met Diesel and saw what he could do. Diesel accepted that he could actually have a family if and when Morgan decided she could allow herself to trust again and live. Who lets a dragon cult leader interfere with their family and try to steal their mate. Diesel and his friends are there to help protect Morgan and Grace. Grace saves the day when she convinces Morgan not to leave Diesel but to be there for him. It really is a good story. Some big surprises I did not expect. In the end, I simply enjoyed Diesel and Morgan's story. I think you to will enjoy this story.
The Big Bad Basilisks are assigned to protect. Doing his guard duty draws the attention of lovely, curvy Morgan and her sweet little daughter. They witness a battle as Deisel turns into his animal and defends the town. Wow. You'd think it would terrify the kid--not Grace. She is a mythical creatures fanatic. To see a real one-WOW! It doesn't hurt her mom's opinion that his human form is a gorgeous man.
He's looking for his mate. He doesn't know how to tell when he finds her but he feels for Morgan.
The time spent guarding the town gives the three of them time together with fun times and fans the flames between the two. Can they have a future? Can she get past her fears from her losses? Will the enemy from the past ruin the future?
This is a favorite series with new to me shifter-creatures. There is plenty of steam, problems, and fun times. I loved the characters, visiting old friends, and watching the new family work to overcome their problems. Will they succeed? You'll need to read to find out.
Primal Basilisk is the second book in Terry Bolryder’s Big Bad Basilisks series. This is an amazing paranormal romance that contains a great storyline filled with action, interesting characters, an adorable ten year old and a happily ever after.
Single mom, Morgan Seward has pushed aside her heart and needs to raise her daughter Grace and run her store. When she witnesses Diesel in his gigantic basilisk form fighting another monster, she’s scared but drawn to him. As they get to known each other, they begin to grow closer together, but will Diesel be strong enough to save Morgan and Grace from a dangerous legend come to life? Read it and find out. Pasts and futures collide when fated mates meet. Mysterious legend. Intense chemistry. Adorable child-adult interactions. This is a great addition to a fantastic new series. I read it in one seating. I can’t wait to read Ajax’s story next.
This is a voluntary review of a reader’s advance copy from the author.
Is this love the real thing? Diesel is a little gun shy when it comes to finding his mate because he has been confused in the past. Every woman he has met, he thought it was his mate. So now this time, he is not sure but this feels so different!
Meanwhile Morgan is juggling being a single mom, a businesswoman, and these emotions that she feels for Diesel. She has some emotional baggage that she needs to deal with and I think that she does not believe she deserves a happy ending. So she chose to protect her heart and stay emotionally distant but that’s difficult when Diesel has a tough exterior with a softy interior.
I love the way that they resolved their personal issues and then also how they helped to save the day. Hopefully, there is a story for rehabilitated villain in the future.
Meanwhile, I can’t wait to read about Ajax and the lucky woman who captures his heart!
Another great story for this series. I'm loving the basilisks, I did in the previous series they really added something, in my opinion! This is Diesel's story and it's a very enjoyable read. Having been sent by the double dragons to another small town in Texas , where a strange cult to the "Crater Dragon" has come to prominence, he is tasked with guarding the town from the supposed return, after a 1000 years, of the "Crater Dragon". Morgan Seward is a single mother and shop owner on the road into the town of Heller's Rest, she also calls to Diesel's basilisk. I really enjoyed this book, if I'm honest Diesel has been my favourite in previous books and I wasn't disappointed with his book. Thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I can't recommend it enough to others that enjoy paranormal romances.
I really enjoyed reading Primal Basilisk. Diesel is much sweeter than I originally anticipated, especially when he meets Morgan and her daughter Grace in Heller's Nest, a place surrounded by legends and myths. He was sent there to protect the town from some strange appearances of Wyvern. Morgan runs a small shop in town, putting all her energy into the shop and raising her daughter. Grace and Wendell take to Diesel immediately, but his mate needs some convincing to take a leap into a relationship with him. A sweet and spicy romance that that has some bumps on the way to the Happy Ending. A warm and light read that's perfect for the chilly fall nights. I received an advanced reader's copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
These basilisk books are just plain ol' fun. In this book, Diesel finally finds his mate, Morgan. She's running scared because she lost her prior love and so, she's hyper aware of danger, especially around her daughter Grace. I have to admit I am not a huge fan of prior losses just because it feels like if the widow didn't lose her prior love, she wouldn't be with this new love (And her loss was placed front and center in this book). But overall, the story progressed well and I liked the way that they reconciled her fear of danger and loss with her being with a basilisk (and therefore, always in danger; in this case, the danger was from an old foe of Diesel's- a dangerous dragon) Grace is adorable and I liked the glimpse into Ajax- the end made me laugh. I can't wait for his story.
Diesel truly is one in a million, finding his mate in the height of danger..as they all do. Morgan and Grace has truly calm the beast in Diesel. But I knew that Clark guy was up to no good..thinking he could just come in and take what he wants and not know how a person feels about bring told what u are to them..the nerve but he got what's coming to him..hopefully he can be rehabilitated. Now life begins for Diesel, Morgan, and Grace..now in heaven's name is Ajax researching if he thinks b this is how you find out about how to catch a mate he's in for a rude awakening..can't wait yo see what happens when he fines his mate..big fan as always Winzie19 🤗💞.
This is the second book in this series but if you want to get the full story then you also need to read the Texas Dragon series as this is where we first meet the Basilisks and they are giving us such wonderful stories as these ancient monsters learn all about modern society
Right from the word go we knew that Diesel was going to be a protector and when he meets Morgan and her daughter Grace. Bur can they have a future when she doesn't want a partner he isn't sure about mates and the first time she saw him he was a huge monster fighting for his life. As they spend more time together though the passion flares Can they have a future You will have to read to see
I enjoyed the first book in this series but was pretty disappointed in this second. It felt more like a contemporary than a shifter/paranormal and the characters and relationships felt undeveloped - almost felt like a very immature story, especially the superficial feelings and corny dialogue. It was also very distracting how often Morgan’s deceased husband is referenced. It was 10 years ago but it’s still paralyzing for Morgan and this really got in the way of the story and relationship development, made it really hard to get invested in Morgan and Diesel’s story.
More basilisks. More fighting. More mates. More fun!
📚 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲: Shifter romance
📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Diesel is a prehistoric basilisk tasked with keeping a small town safe from harm. Morgan is a single mom trying to keep her head above water. They meet and sparks fly.
🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: This series gets a few eye rolls from me, but not enough for me to stop reading it. The books are short(er) so not a huge undertaking, and each is romantic enough. There's definitely some hokiness about it, but I'm into these reads and will be reading the last book as well.
The first step is usually the biggest, take the leap! Morgan, is raising her child, Grace alone while trying to maintain her living running the store and surviving the extremists awaiting the return of the legendary crater dragon. She is loving, patient and very nurturing to Grace who is an absolute pip. Diesel is on a mission investigating suspicious activity. He was excited to find his mate and totally clueless about the idea of 'dating'. Fun story about learning new customs, learning about shifters and legends and taking leaps out of comfort zones. Good story, nicely paced and great supporting characters. Well done!
I love the book the store was good but somewhere along the line was missing something I didn’t quite believe it your first book was fantastic I chose this book because the first one was so good I couldn’t wait to find the second and I would recommend this book to my book club the first one is just starting out and it’s a good romance the sex thing is fantastic I hope to see more of your work but the ending was not quite what I was hoping for so I’m hoping AJax book is better
Primal Basilisk: Big Bad Basilisks Book 2 By Terry Bolryder Kindle unlimited purchase Diesel is the next basilisk to find his mate. he is protecting the little town Heller’s Rest. Morgan is afferaf of loving someone after the death of her husband. What she feels for Diesel is making her feel like she has to walk away from him before something happens to him. I enjoyed reading this book look forward to reading Ajax's story. Apex Basilisk Primal Basilisk Book 3?
It’s a cute story with the two leads Diesel, the Basilisk, and Morgan, the human female. Morgan has a sweet and funny daughter who really steals the story, her name is Grace. She is so clever about her mom Morgan liking Diesel. I enjoyed the storyline and this troupe. My only criticism is that Morgan did not move me emotionally as a character. As I read the chapters I was happy with the progress of their relationship but it seemed more mechanical. Diesel was her safe choice not necessarily her love-mate choice. Read On!
Great twist to typical single lady to one who has a little girl . A widower who has focused only on her daughter until she meets a basilisk shifter. She learns she hasn’t been really living and fate has a way of teaching. The basilisk is a little gun shy to pursue a woman as he has been wrong about finding a mate before. Fate helps him to use his special talent to teach a woman she needs to live. Great follow up to this series. I cannot wait to read about Ajax.
I loved the series before this one,the first book in this series was good this book is diesel journey to finding a mate but I found it slow, I love to Read can never put a book down for long but this book I did a few times. There was something missing maybe it was because most of it was him Morgan and her daughter Grace.I miss the banter and other things the group gets up to.this book was more focused on Morgan and her ex Adam (who died) but there relationship was not good, so it felt like you wanted to scream oh move on already.I think that's why I got bored.
He is there to protect the town and she runs a local store. He is leary when he meets her as remember he thought all females were his mate now he is not so sure. She also has a daughter. She sees him fighting a wyvern. she falls for him but is worried she will lose him like her first husband. This one has the drama, suspense, action and of course steam.
I voluntarily agreed to review this product. My review is entirely my own opinion.
The heart really takes center stage in Diesel and Morgan's story. This couple had me feeling all the feels and swoon. They were so achingly perfect together that I had to love them hard and root for them fiercely. Along with the wonderful abundance of emotion that this story delivers, you get a skillfully crafted blend of drama, humor, action and steam that I found impossible to resist. All in all, just a truly terrific read and a superb new entry for this series.
Diesel and Morgan’s love story is sweet, sexy, loving….. Loved that the story has Morgan as a single mother with a ten year old daughter, Grace. Liked the theme of surviving versus living. One of my favorite lines is “nothing in life is safe.” Prime Basilisk has action but it is no where near as violent as the first Basilisk novel. Chuckle, who knew Basilisks’ could hold their breathe for so long. Very Hot!
