I'm always on the hunt for a new YA series, especially if that series involves some sort of future dystopia. That said, I didn't expect this. If Harvey really is a first time author, then he's a genius. This book was as gripping as it was terrifying. They way he takes us from what is basically the world we live in, to a dark, twisted future not only feels real but almost inevitable. To make things even more believable, Harvey does it, without spoilers, through the eyes of the villain - like Joaquin Phoenix when he played The Joker. Just like you felt empathy for his character Arthur Fleck, Harvey makes you feel the same for Edgar Spear, and you kind up end up thinking... well... it's not his fault.

The characters in this book are brilliant. It's one of those that make you think almost straight away, ok, how long before they make this into a movie?

Like all series, I hope it delivers because the cliffhanger ending sets things up nicely for cracking sequel. 5 out of 5 in my book, my only gripe is how to categorise it?

I think it would be wrong to say The Spear of Destiny is a dystopian novel because it's not really. It's much, much more. It's not really hard sci-fi, and it's not really a teen/ coming-of-age drama either. On the other hand it is a thriller but it's both a medical and political thriller as well, at least in part, before we move into the dystopian future which would then be something more between a horror and a sci-fi revenge, again, at least in part. The problem is that The Spear of Destiny is something else. Something very different and it crosses many of the traditional genres that books are normally placed into without fitting comfortably into one specifically itself. Perhaps this is why it's presumably relatively unknown (very few ratings) and also why it is so unique?

It's great read. A refreshing take on YA sci-fi and dystopian fiction.

An Absolute Must Read!

Loved this epic twist on a new dystopian future by Harvey. Well written and an excellent start in my opinion to a brand new young adult sci-fi thriller series. In short, it had me hooked from the get go. Harvey's dialogue and characters are just fabulous. I won't do spoilers, except to say that the protagonist (Spear) is a sort of sad, hopeless case, at least in his youth, but does he ever turn into something!

I'm sure there will be a lot of great reviews over this novel so it's probably no point in me adding my 5 cents, but I have a bit of a fun fact... Did you know that "The Spear of Destiny" is also known as The Holy Lance, and is supposedly the spear that pierced the side of Jesus as he hung on the cross? Now I have a theory here that is probably wrong, but here goes, the reason Harvey called the main character Edgar Spear is because in his dystopian new-world (where humanity loses it's ability to reason and so it could be said also loses hope) is he drawing a parallel? As in, just as The Holy Lance ended the hopes of mankind, has Spear now done the same?

I'm starting on the sequel (The Absolution of Kane Part 1), so I guess we'll see if my theory pans out or if Harvey throws in a few more twists just to dismiss my theory. Either way, HEROPLOT is a definite must if, like me, you love sci-fi and are tired of the oh so typical dystopian teen stuff out there. Seems Suzanne Collins really defined a genre that just became so overdone and copied that it's hard to find anything different or exciting. HEROPLOT was absolutely what I was waiting for. A refreshing surprise just begging to be discovered. Gripping. Explosive. Tons of twists... and a climax worth waiting for!

This really was a gripping dystopian thriller. The start was maybe a bit slow but then it's building as you discover more about the characters. By the time you hit the halfway point it really is rollercoaster stuff. Loved it. Have to say its easily one of the best sci-fi / modern day/ dystopian/ revenge thrillers I've read in years and I'm left wondering the reason why this book hasn't been reviewed so much is most likely as it crosses mant genres and isn't written to market as so many books nowadays are. If you like sci-fi, if you love a good thriller, if you want a more credible dystopian spin on the future, then I'd say this is definetly for you. Can't wait for the next installment. I thought Spear of Destiny was brilliant. And a debut author as well!
