Can a girl, armed only with stories, make her way through a land of myth, magic and monsters, to save her grandfather's shattered memories before they're forever lost?

His only cure? Memory Glue. To brew it, Alexis just needs eight ingredients: stuff like nose hair from a baku (dream-eater), sweat from a duyung (sea siren) and...OK. Maybe some are tricky to find in local supermarkets.

To obtain them Alexis must journey to a realm where the fabled creatures from Grandpa's folktales are alive in the flesh (and often flesh-eating).

At least she'll have fun company: the nasty kenit (forest imp) who'd cast the horrible spell on Grandpa, and her no-nonsense Grandma, who harbours a secret that’ll change Alexis' life forever.

Piece of cake, right?

Oh, there's also a deadline.

Can Grandpa be saved before he's forever lost to the mists within his mind?

Based on a true story.

Daryl Kho is the author of Mist-Bound: How to Glue Back Grandpa, the multiple award-winning and bestselling fantasy novel for kids and families published by Penguin Books SEAsia.

Inspired by his father's affliction with and eventual passing from dementia, the book hopes to increase appreciation for the elderly, raise dementia awareness and highlight the importance of familial love in keeping one glued together. It also aspires to grow appreciation for the power of stories, especially the tales found within our elders' minds and from around our own backyards. Due to its prosocial themes, Mist-Bound has been supported by non-profit organizations such as Dementia Singapore (part of Alzheimer's International) and TOUCH Community Services (Singapore's preeminent social services charity).

Mist-Bound swept all of Singapore's major children/youth book awards in 2022: Firstly it was awarded the Hedwig Anuar Book Award (HABA) by the Singapore Book Council , given biennially to Singapore's most outstanding children's middle-grade book. Next, it won the 2022 Singapore Book Awards for Best Young Persons Title (ages 7-18 years), which was presented by the Singapore Book Publishers Association. Mist-bound was also a finalist for the Singapore Book Awards' Book of the Year award and even made it to the Top Ten Reader’s Choice books after an open public vote. Finally the book was nominated for the 2022 Crystal Kite Award, presented by the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), a global non-profit organization.

Mist-Bound was on Times Bookstores' Singapore's Children's best-seller list for 26 weeks, and on MPH and Kinokuniya Malaysia's Childrens bestseller lists for over 10 weeks: amongst the few local/regional books on all lists. Daryl was also named Times Bookstores' Author of the Month in November 2021.

Mist-Bound has been featured in numerous media platforms across Singapore and Malaysia, including leading newspapers (The Straits Times' Singapore, The Star, Nanyang Siang Pau, The Sun Malaysia and Malaysiakini), radio and webcasts (ChannelNewsAsia987FM, BFM Malaysia, Vintageradio Singapore, Great People TV, Two Book Nerds Talking etc), writer's festivals (Singapore Writers Festival, Malaysia Writer's Festival) and online publications (makchic, Project we forgot, A-List Singapore etc).

Sadly, Daryl’s father passed away before Mist-Bound could be completed and read to him. Daryl nearly abandoned the project thereafter. Ultimately however, he found renewed purpose to see it through: each time that the story was read, was a chance anew for Grandpa to be “saved”, over and over, and over again.

In terms of other works, Daryl's short story "The Wake Up Call" was published in HarperCollins Childrens Books' "Flipped: Mystery Stories/ Sci-Fi stories" in June 2022. A piece about the metaverse, "The Wake Up Call" was originally published in 1997 in INCITE, an annual anthology featuring the best student works from Ontario, Canada where Daryl attended high school. That same year, Daryl was also awarded the Reginald A. Finney Award for Proficiency in Senior English. At his alma mater, the University of Chicago, his plays and kung-fu performances (all co-written, co-directed and co-acted with his landlord, no less!) were the highlight and backbone of the annual Chinese New Year Shows that were performed to paying audiences of close to a thousand.

Malaysia-born and Singapore-based, Daryl Kho works in the regional TV industry, where he sells other people’s stories and ideas for a living. More on Daryl and Mist-Bound can be found here: http://darylkho.com .

I got lost sometimes when I was reading this book. My imagination went wild. I was really into it.

Daryl Kho is such a good storyteller. I wanted to read this book in one sitting but work get in the way.

I’m super into mythical folklore stories especially in Southeast Asia. I found that the stories were written beautifully and I was enchanted by the magical stories.

So glad that I got the chance to follow Alexis’ journey and adventure into the magical world. The plot is just so amazing. Most importantly this book teaches you the importance of family. I loved the bond between Alexis’ with her grandparents especially her grandfather.

Overall, this book is so much fun and easy to read. I hope that I can read more books like this because I really loved the world building.

“Here's another Grandpa's saying for you, Alexis.

if Love is the seed, then the Oak that springs from it.. is Family.

Family is everything. It's the whole tree.

From the roots that hold it steady, right up to the trunk, its branches, the leaves and the fruit that hangs from it. Everything, the foundation, the roots, the flower and the fruit.

That's why we call it a Family Tree.

Our branches may grow in different directions. But our roots remain as one.”

I mean. This quote alone had made me teared up, and best believe, its one of the best Middle Grade Fantasy books I've read in my life.

Personal Ratings: 4.5/5🌟

Short Summary
Alexis is an eccentric girl who takes comfort with the companionship of her grandparents. Due to her parents nature of work, she has few friends and she is especially close to her grandpa. He's her whole world and she loves the stories that her grandfather tells her. One day, whilst they were on their way back home, something happened that led her Grandpa's memories to be scattered around. In order to save him, they have to travel to the land of Eastern Mist, where monsters and faeries resides. Alexis goes on an adventure of her life to save her grandpa's memories.

Personal Thoughts
This is a Middle Grade YA that heavily handles topics about family, love and most of all believing in yourself. Whilst the plot may sound cliche or it sounds familiar, I like how Kho had taken the context of the book and made it into a story that was so raw and close to home and heart.

There were a lot of things that makes this book just a perfect read and I'm here just to convince yall to pick this book up and give it a go;

✨𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗸𝘀✨
The story is somewhat an Own Voices story, of the experience of the author himself handling with his dad who has dementia. Even the Forward and Dedication page had left me teary. I like how the author had incorporated the importance of old folks in a family and in some ways, Alexis relationship with her grandpa was portrayed so beautifully. I love how they connect with stories, the lessons that she learnt with that stories and how it had helped her survive loneliness. In some ways, the author had indirectly shown the struggles of handling people with dementia, and how frustrating it can be, for both the patient and the family member taking care of them. The lessons that the author had instilled in handling this is through three things, Hope, Faith and Love. Whilst it may not be easy, old folks brings joy and purpose to our home and I like how the family relationship is portrayed in here.

✨𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻✨
Back when I was younger, I took this representation for granted, but seeing a book, with so many South East Asia representation, Malay words that you're familiar with and just having some of your myths being put in a fantasy book its just so refreshing. The fact that I can somehow lend this book to my younger cousins and proudly showed the illustrations of the mythical monsters that are mentioned in the book makes me happy. The legends and myths are a mix of the old folks tale that we have grown up with and it lifts my spirits up a bit whenever I feel represented in a book.

✨ 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬✨
There are a variety of characters in this book and I like how the characters are all relatable and in a sense, it made sense to and adult reading this book too. The thing about middle grade books is that, for an adult reading it, it will be a buffer read, a read that will definitely lift your sprits up, and for children who are reading this, it will serve them a variety of characters to learn and take lessons from. I like the relationship of Alexis with the Kenit, the rekindling of her relationship with her grandma and most of all, I love how kindness is represented in this book. It shows that at the end of the day, when you're kind to everyone, everything will work out for you in some ways.

✨ 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲✨
"Stories are the soil upon which dreams grow, and dreams are the buds within which Hope dwells.

And Hope-is one of the most precious gift of all"

Throughout the book, the most important lesson that we learnt is about family and hopes and love. A family member that you didn't think you could be close with, is somewhat the biggest pillar of your existence. It really made me teary. The relationship that Alexis had with her grandparents is just so precious my heart just swelled.

Overall
Although a Middle Grade Young Adult Fantasy, this is surely a book that is suitable for all. I highly highly encourage yall to pick this up. The writing is straightforward, yet, leaves room for you to enjoy. Its a read that is suitable for everyone be it you're 50 or you're 10, its something that everyone can take a lesson with, and I for one am taken with this book.

Thank you to Times Reads for generously providing me a review copy of the book.

"When all appears lost, with all hope but gone; Keep faith that the night, is darkest before the dawn. It's in that hour most forlorn, that the light of Spring is born..."

As a result of stumbling upon a kenit's (based on Malay folklore and it refers to small humans with magical powers) house, Alexis' Grandpa was hit by a Fog of Forgetting spell cast by the kenit. Grandpa's memories start to shatter. To cure the spell, Alexis (together with her Grandma, who apparently is a fairy Princess, and the kenit, Riff) must collect 8 ingredients from the magical world of the Mist to construct the Memory Glue. We then follow the journey of Alexis in overcoming different hurdles to collect the ingredients to save Grandpa's memories.

The beauty of this story lies in the fact that it is incorporated with a lot of South East Asian / Asian folklore and mythology, ranging from the "duwendes" (little elves) from the Philippines, the "batuan" (rock troll) from Indonesia, the "pixiu" (a hybrid flying beast with the head of a dragon, the body of a horse) from China, the story of Ganesh and Karthik's race around the world, the "bunian" (forest spirit) from Malaysia/Brunei/Indonesia, the "nangmai" (nymphs) from Thailand, the "baku" (a creature which eats nightmares) from Japan and etc. Drawings of these mythical creatures are also provided in several pages of the book. Underlying the journey of saving Alexis' Grandpa's memories would be the issue of dementia faced by senior citizens. As acknowledged by the author himself, this book was inspired by the author's own experience with his father who suffered from vascular dementia caused by two strokes. This resulted in Daryl's only child, Alexis never had the chance to spend much time with her Grandpa before his memories were robbed by dementia. This family-centered YA novel highlighted the important factors in handling senior citizens who are suffering from dementia, which are Hope, Faith, and Love. While I may not be a target audience for this book, I would still highly recommend this to fans of YA or children's fiction as it showcased the beautiful Asian folklore and mythology. YA fantasy is truly not dominated by Western-centric tropes. Thanks to Times Read for sending this review copy to me!

I was pretty close to my grandparents. My grandma was a woman of a few words, but she was always present in my life. When I lost her shortly before my graduation, I was deeply heartbroken. I only had the opportunity to meet my grandpa for a short time, during which he filled playing with us grandchildren, reciting to us in a sing-song voice countless Malay poems and rhyming pantuns that I still memorise today.

This is why this book has a special place in my heart. I could relate to the bond between Alexis and her grandpa, and later, with her grandma when they forged a deeper connection through the trials they faced during their journey in the magical Mist.

After an unfortunate encounter with a Kenit which cost her grandfather his memory, Alexis and her grandma had to travel to the mythical land of the Mist to seek for special ingredients to brew a cure. Pressed for time before grandpa’s memories were lost forever, Alexis, her grandma and the Kenit were tested to the limits and most times, found themselves risking their lives as they ventured into the strange land.

I thoroughly enjoyed the little stories grandpa told Alexis. It has been a long time since I last heard of our local folklores and to have these and other Asian fables infused into the storyline was just cherry on top. I was so happy with the appearance of characters with names familiar to me, like the Duyung, Kenit and Onis. Paired with the beautiful illustrations, Mist Bound makes for a wonderful reading for the young and the young-at-heart. I couldn’t help but read the whole text out loud especially voicing the dialogues between the different characters!

I’m glad I joined the giveaway organised by TBNT and won the book. Thank you Daryl and TBNT for giving me a marvellous reading experience!

Honestly, this is in par with my love for Harry Potter. Loving the ASEAN reps and folklores that were given life. Loving the family theme that this book has given and it reminded me a lot about my grandparents.

My late grandmother had Parkinsons and my grandfather is showing symptoms of dementia, so the author’s first page caught me off guard and I started to tear up 🥲

“…each time that a child reads the story is a chance for Grandpa to be ‘saved’, over and over, and over again.”

STAHPPP😭😭😭😭

Those who say that Alexis complains a lot, here’s the thing. Don’t all children do is complain? Alexis’s a child, this is a middle grade book. It’s not THAT deep, please.

Yes, I will defend this book, I don’t care. It’s sad that you were bitter when you were a child 🙄

And I will most definitely recommend this to those who would want to rekindle their childhood memories.

"Why spend your life missing someplace you've never been, and can never be? And why risk having our children mocked and ostracized for believing in something that the world could never understand?"

What a warm cuddly emotional fun story.
Like what more could I ever ask for.
What really hooked me into reading this book was my relationship with my grandparents.
Grandparents are such special people in my life and the fact that Mist Bound involved the relationship of a grandparent and grandchild already stole my heart.

And let's be real a plotline that has old people in it like grandparents, we all know it's going to be good fun and emotional.
From the beginning of the story, I was already in it.
Grandpa's stories were as if just like Alexis, we are the ones listening to his stories and he is speaking to me.

They just didn't go on an adventure, they went on the best craziest adventure ever!
Like during the moment I am reading it, I was like "nothing is going to get crazier than that." But I was definitely wrong, it gets better and more adventurous.

When I recommend this book to someone, I don't want to tell them what is it about or what to expect, they need to go through the journey themselves to enjoy it themselves of all the things they are going to read, see and experience.

I enjoy the emotional moments here and there, the hidden life lessons we received and the character growth Alexis goes through.
The ending was so emotional, of course, what's a story without a few emotional moments with grandparents.

I am starting a petition that I need a Riff and Yume's plush toy! They are my favourite!

"There is a land that exists beyond this world you know of. One that's unknown to many here. This land is called Mist. Those in Mist with magical abilities are able to breach the divide and traverse the walls separating Mist and Earth using doorways or portals woven with their powers. Some of them even choose to remain and live on Earth." But humans here rarely pass through the other way."

I don't recall how I stumbled upon this, because honestly, the marketing around it is... non-existent?? But I somehow found Daryl Kho's website! And realised there was a preorder sale! So I ordered it!

Mist Bound tells of Alexis' quest to cure her Grandpa after he was hit by a Fog of Forgetting spell. She just has to travel across the magical world of Mist with her scary Grandma and the annoying kenit who cast the spell to find the 8 ingredients to make Memory Glue. As Alexis journeys across Mist, she discovers a wonderful (and scary) thing - all the wild tales Grandpa has been telling her are true!

As an MG book, lame jokes abound - which was a little meh for me, but I'm not the main target audience. The concept itself isn't terribly new (my Coexist is written in a similar vein), but what I love about it is the delving into of Asian folklore. Not only do we have the kenit, Paeri, and duyung, there are also the Nangmais from Thailand, Baku from Japan, and pixiu from China (and a lot more lah!). While this is primarily Alexis' journey (and ours) of meeting these strange and wonderful creatures, Kho also weaves in short snippets of actual folklore and regional myths.

There are also all these cute little illustrations!! by SillyJellie!!

Whilst this is an exciting journey to a magical land, there's also a sad note to it - book Alexis' Grandpa is hit by a spell that makes him forget, but real-life Alexis, Kho's daughter, will never be able to know her grandfather before dementia struck.

Mist Bound: How to Glue Back Grandpa offers a determined story of faith, hope, and love, glued together by family.

Rating: 4.5 (bumping it up to 5 because I can)

This was such a charming book, and though it's children's fiction (this book is aimed at middle-graders), there are lessons and takeaways for adults as well.

The blend of the real world and the mythical folklore from all over Southeast Asia (and even beyond!) are portrayed with beautiful illustrations by Ellie of SillyJellie, and though at the surface the story is simplistic enough for children, there are also real-life lessons on the consequences and effects of our choices and action, as well as a touching and poignant reminder of dementia.

The combination of both Kho's clear writing and Ellie's magical artwork would delight all children and adults alike, and to have such a beautiful representation of the bond between grandparents and grandchildren was an added delight. Loved how Kho shows the bond between Alexis and her grandfather in the beginning and the contrast of Alexis's newly-found appreciation for her grandmother when her adventure into the mythical world of faeries and monsters unfolded. I think this is one of the few books that feature such a strong presence of a child's grandparents in their "journey", be it the mundane or the magical, and I really loved it.

On top of all of that, we also get wonderful representations of Southeast Asian folklore and characters! I smiled every time I came across such examples in this magical world where faeries, kenit, onis, duyungs, and many other such creatures exist.

Huge thank you to Times Reads and Daryl Kho for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

When you're wholly immersed in a story and it feels like home, you know you've struck the gold mine in books.

In what I can best describe as the Southeast Asian version of Narnia (with a tinge of The Princess Diaries), Malaysian Singaporean author Daryl Kho spins a beautiful tale filled with magic, nostalgia, and familial love.

Being a fan of mythology in general, I jumped at the chance to read a tale inspired by the mythology of my home region and also the whole of Asia. I knew I was going to love reading about the mythological creatures that I was familiar with, and I was pleasantly surprised to encounter some that I had not heard of before! Still, Daryl Kho's intense storytelling made it all too easy for me to envision everything around me, as if I too had been sucked into the Mist.

All the characters had their own signature tone, which made them very entertaining. The grandfather is an eccentric storyteller who often spoke in riddles, whereas his wife was portrayed as the strict no-nonsense grandparent who made sure everything was in order. Then we have the protagonist Alexis, who is your essential stubborn, rebellious teenager, but with an iron will and a heart of gold. We also have the kenit Riff, who provided the comedic relief with his impulsive bursts of magic and overall amusing demeanour. I laughed out loud several times during my read, which is a rare occurrence for me.

As this adventure takes place in the fantasy land of Mist, the atmosphere for a majority of the book was whimsical and airy, which I truly loved, so I had not expected the ending to hit me as hard as it did. Despite the tonal shift, the last line of the epilogue might just be my favourite one in the entire book. It's the sort of open ending that sparks hope, fully embodying the overall theme of the book. A brilliant example of showing, not telling, and something I feel separates a good author from a great one.

Another pleasant surprise was the fact that Alexis's grandparents happen to mirror my own. My grandfather was also a master of tales, a warm kindhearted person who could make friends with anyone who passed. Much like Alexis's grandmother, mine too was stern, stalwart, and the strongest woman I know. Though they have both passed, I could relive the times when they were here while reading this book. Aside from the Southeast Asian setting, this is the representation that my soul craved, though I never knew I needed it.

That, for me, was true magic.

All in all, Mistbound is a fantastic read for readers of all ages. I wish that there was a book about Tricia and King Temeng too, and the trials of her courtship in Mist. If you like Asian mythology, fairytales, enchanting characters, and teenagers with an iron will, this is the book for you!

5/5 stars!

"courage isn't the absence of fear, but being able to push on, in spite of it"
Have you ever read a book you wished you could have read earlier or that it entered your life when you needed it the most? Wonder no more! Save yourself the time and get yourself a copy of Mist Bound: How to Glue Back Grandpa.

"sometimes Alexis . . . the least of us can even be the best of us"
Malaysian Singaporean Daryl Kho transports you into the magical world of Mist. Imagine 'The Nutcracker' meets 'Arabian Nights' but make it filled with creatures from Malaysia, Japan, Vietnam and other Asian folklore. We follow Alexis as she travels in Mist with her grandma to collect ingredients to brew Memory Glue for her grandpa, whose memories have been shattered. This is no regular trip to the grocery store, it is an adventure in a foreign magical world that carries the air of familiarity to young Alexis thanks to her grandpa's fantasy stories.

"the only person you're destined to become, it who you decide to be"
I loved the entire book, there were many quotes that captured my eye. Especially the prose in the sentences, those were poetry on its own! Daryl Kho's bio states that he was a prolific creator during his student days: composing songs, poetry, plays and even a kung-fu musical!
It is no wonder Mist Bound turned out the way it did:
-filled to the brim with illustrations to accompany the imagination of the reader.
- amazing quotes
- flawless storytelling
- captivating plot
- heartwarming characters and a morally grey one ;)
- precious life lessons to be learnt in between the hustle of running away from an onit and duyung
- raising awareness of dementia
- will definitely make you cry (i did)

There is never a dull moment with Alexis in this middle-grade book, it is perfect for anyone who wants to try reading since it is easy to understand and it captures the reader's interest instantly. Especially if the reader is Malaysian or Singaporean. The fairytale-style illustrations in the book is sure to be a pleaser. Btw, the book cover is filled with little easter eggs!

I genuinely appreciate this book, it felt blessed to be able to read such a tale such is a hug to my soul as I too am journeying in a Mist of my own collecting my ingredients. Thank you Daryl Kho for not giving up on your story and choosing to go through with the publishing, it is a gift. Forever and always. I have endless praise and admiration for my new favourite author - Daryl Kho. I will read anything he writes in the future. His personal story that inspired this tale has my entire heart. Mist Bound isn't just a book, it is an experience. I insist that you treat yourself with this delightful tale that showcases the profound love between a granddaughter and her grandfather.

❝ – #BookReview: Mistbound by Daryl Kho

🔸 About: A journey of Alexis into the Mist to glue back her grandpa’s memories.

“If only she could go back to that night, and tell him she loved his stories, instead of making fun of them, pretending that they bored her!”

This book is so beautiful, so many words of wisdom and life lessons that you can ponder upon. Even though this book is for middle graders, I believe adults would also enjoy it as much, just like me.

Here are some of the reasons why I think you should give this book a try:

1- Asian represents! There are so many of Asian folklores included in this book, quite a number of our local folklores too AND from different races.

2- Non-stop adventures. There will be no dull moment, at least for me. One adventure took place after another. Kids would very much enjoy this. It’s so exciting.

3- Beautiful relationships with grandparents. This book did not only teach about appreciating your grandparents while they’re still alive, but for those who lost them. It brought me to reminisce the moments I had with them long time ago <3

4- Awareness on dementia. I love how Daryl teaches the readers about dimentia in a very magical way. I now know how to tell my kids one day when they ask me ‘mom, what is dementia?’, thanks to Daryl.

“Despite dementia, there is a life to be lived now and for the future”

This is the book that I will definitely read to my kids as their bedtime stories. Thank you so much Daryl, for writing this masterpiece! Again, I’m practically on my knees for book 2.

My rating: 4.5⭐️

Thank you so much to @times.reads and @putrifariza for sending me this book in exchange for an honest opinion. This book is available in all bookstores.

If you're looking for a good Middle-grade book, head over to @mphclick and get Mist Bound: How to Glue Back Grandpa by @darylkho.

It's a beautiful book written by a talented local author that for me personally is deserving of a Newbery Medal, if it could be nominated. I really do think that!

Mist Bound is beautifully written and makes use of local and Asian myths and legends. I love the many mentions of Asian mythical creatures that I'd never heard of when I read the story. The descriptions are accompanied by beautiful illustrations designed by the talented Ellie from @elliethopia. I love them!

Although it is a story written for children, it does not undermine their ability to appreciate good writing. It's fun to read but not overly simplified and that's one of my favourite things about it.

Alexis is a great heroine. She's feisty, high-spirited and loves her grandparents. Her relationship with her Grandpa is beautiful, made even more so when you understand the story behind the story. Her Grandma is a wonderful adult figure that symbolises strength, endurance and maturity as well as sacrifice and I love how Alexis grows to understand her better.

There are many other magical beings which make the story fun. I like that even though there are comical elements (which mostly come in the form of Riff the kenit), the story still has this serious tone about it. I really appreciate that in a storybook. In fact, I can't help wishing this book could be turned into a movie!

I won't say you will definitely like it because I don't know that but this is a book that is high on my list of recommendations for Middle-grade books. I do know that I look forward to reading more books from Mr. Kho.

Mist Bound: How to Glue Back Grandpa by Daryl Kho is a wholesome story following Alexis and her grandma's adventure through the magical lands of Mist. This book highlights on the importance of family, restoring balance for the magical creatures and braving all the obstacles to procure all the ingredients to get grandpa's memories back.

A few pages into this book and I was immensely hooked. This story is so very well written, the stories within and the plot is just as amazing. Obviously, the first thing that made me want to pick up this book is the cover but I can definitely and proudly say that this book is both beautiful inside and out.

I absolutely love grandpa's tales of mythology and I would totally revel in it every time a new story is to be told. The journey to compile all the ingredients to bring back grandpa's memories is such a whirlwind and an exciting crusade. It feels like I'm right there along with the adventure with the characters, a great book to read during very trying times when we are cooped up at home.

Daryl Kho is such a talented author and if he has any plans to publish another book, I'd totally want to get it. I seriously cannot get enough of this book and the world building, perhaps a companion book set in the same setting is a great idea too. I would totally want to know more as it ended too soon.

This book is utterly breathtaking and I don't care how old you are, I wholly recommend you to read this book about family, the magical land of Mist and learn important life lessons along the way.

"𝑪𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒈𝒆 𝒊𝒔𝒏'𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒂𝒃𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒇𝒆𝒂𝒓, 𝒖𝒕 𝒃𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒑𝒖𝒔𝒉 𝒐𝒏, 𝒊𝒏 𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒊𝒕. 𝑲𝒆𝒆𝒑 𝒌𝒆𝒆𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒏."

This book was amazing. Immediately, the premise pulled me in. I'm always a sucker for grandparent relationships 🥺 add sprinkles of magic, myths, mayhem, and MIST, just wow.

"𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒍𝒊𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒓𝒚 𝒊𝒔 𝒐𝒏 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒆. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒈𝒊𝒄 𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒑𝒆𝒕'𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒇𝒍𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔. 𝑨𝒍𝒍 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒈𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒖𝒑 𝒊𝒏 𝒔𝒎𝒐𝒌𝒆."

The lessons learned about Alzheimer's are so crucial, so needed. Thank you for bringing this important discussion into a unique and creative story that can help young readers understand the direness.

"𝑱𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒉𝒖𝒈, 𝒎𝒚 𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔, 𝑰 𝒘𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒇𝒍𝒚 𝒖𝒑 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒉𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒔."

This is a book I wish I read when I was younger. It would just help me feel represented and be more appreciative of family. I would also learn so many new myths and magical creatures! Fantasic Beasts, move aside. Finishing this, I now understand so many hidden things on the book cover. Brilliant!

The plot development was so well done. We get closer to Grandma, we forgive Riff, we follow on their journey to fixing mistakes, making new friends, and learning more about Grandma.

"𝑻𝒖𝒓𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒇𝒂𝒄𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒖𝒏...
...𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒉𝒂𝒅𝒐𝒘𝒔 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒇𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒃𝒆𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖."

Every message is so uplifting! I found myself smiling and going 🥺🥺🥺 I'm so excited for the goodness this book will bring to the younger generation.

P.S. Pleaseee tell me there is a sequel. I need to learn more about King Temeng and the next adventure with Grandma and Grandpa!

If you're looking for that special book for your children or to gift your nephews and nieces, search no more. Mist Bound is one of the few perfect books written with kids in mind. It gives a lot of love and laugh, it gives a lot of life lessons in a fun way and it's one of those books you'd want to read with the little ones. I found myself reading this out loud (as I always do) but this time I'm missing an audience with cute faces. I could imagine parents or guardians reading this book to their kids, making the voices and everything.

What I love most about this book is one: it is written by a Malaysian who seems genuinely proud of his family. Two: it combines a number of folktales from all over the world in such a seemless way. I'm not sure if they're really known folktales or made up for this book, but they're still very good either way. Three: the illustrations are just a perfect fit with the story. Everything just worked for me.

Well, everything that is, except a few things. I didn't particularly like the disgusting scenes but that's just a personal taste. I think children would be very delighted about those scenes though. But what was hard for me to ignore was the editing errors. There were some dialogues missing the quotations and at some places, what should have been "he" was written as "his" instead. This in no way reflect negatively on the author or the story itself but for me it did take some of the enjoyment away.

I read Mist Bound last year. It had its heartfelt themes, a resourceful protagonist and a colorful, fantastical world. It's a solid definition of a decent children's book. But I couldn't overlook this one thing. Mist Bound attracts positive reception for its inclusion of Southeast Asian mythological creatures. One of those creatures included Dyaks. An isolated seafaring tribe with a fierce, intimidating air. They get generous with sage wisdom in times of crisis. In reality, Sea Dayaks are real people, many concentrated in East Malaysia. They work, go to school, start their own businesses, achieve stardom (Henry Golding, anyone?). They have myriad of feelings and experiences just like anyone. I couldn't help but feel that the author reduced them into Magical Natives. Bear in mind, no other creatures were coded as real life ethnic groups. Knowing that the author was Malaysian, I'm more angered by this poor choice in writing. The stereotype of our indigenous peoples being mystics are a product of colonialism. Sadly, it has gone long enough for Malaysians in the Peninsula to perpetuate it in the form of a children's book.

EDIT: The author has acknowledged my review and has decided to rename the Dyaks for future reprints of Mist Bound. I have deleted my 1 star rating. However, I will continue to leave up my review for accountability's sake.

Stumbled on this book from someone's Instagram, and was intrigued by Daryl Kho's backstory. His "why", and Southeast Asian elements were the 2 big factors that led me to pick up this book. I found the story simple in a childlike, whimsical way. But that simplicity and lyrical writing are the same ingredients that made this book... magically easy to read. I would read an entire section each time, and only stopped because of bedtime. Highly recommend it, as a way of exploring dementia without too many real-life elements getting in the way of empathizing with the characters and their emotions.

P.s. Today I learnt about the real life Ujong island. It doesn't have as many mythical creatures, but there's a family of lion-fishes (lion mermaids?) that spit water out all day, er'day.

Prepare to be enthralled from the very first page of Mist Bound. At times laugh-out-loud hilarious, at times heartwarming and poignant. It folds Southeast Asian culture as well as diaspora feelings into a magical adventure with Southeast Asian Mythical Creatures complications and twists keep the plot engaging and snappy. The way Daryl Kho takes traditions and lore and incorporates them into an exciting contemporary fantasy setting makes my heart soar as a reader. Readers who love magical adventures, complex family relationships, should pick up Mist Bound immediately!

After reading the first few lines, I was transformed into my 12 year old self and I had to force myself to not finish it in a single sitting. Loved the personal story behind the theme of this book. There are so many other gems; the author has a way of communicating complex social interactions and adult themes to a child in a sensible and positive way. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to be reminded of the innocence, purity and determination of childhood. Can't wait for book 2.

a must-read especially after learning the author's own personal story about his father. for someone like me who's not yet had to go through the experience of having a close family member with dementia, the book is a wonderful literary experience to understand more of what is typically a difficult yet so very important topic. definitely suitable for all ages to read and hugely enjoy the references to Asian mythical folklore too!

This story now has a special place in my heart as it made me think about both sets of my grandparents. Looking back, I am truly blessed to have such fond memories of my grandparents during my childhood.

This story follows Alexis who is under the care of her grandparents while her parents are sorting out another move due to the nature of their work. Alexis doesn’t have any friends because she moved around alot so she took comfort in spending time with her grandparents, especially her grandpa. He kept her captivated with his stories and they often go for little adventures together. One day, something happened to Grandpa which caused his memories to be scattered. In order to save him, Alexis has to travel to the mysterious land of Mist, where magic resides. Alexis made many discoveries about herself and her grandparents during her adventure. With limited time ahead, can Alexis help bring back Grandpa’s memories?

I can relate to Alexis so much. I am an only child and growing up, my parents are busy with work and I had my grandparents looking after me. Both sets of my grandparents have taken turns taking care of me and they all show their love very differently!

Daryl is a great storyteller. He managed to immersed me into his world of magic and myths with Southeast Asian representation. There are some words that I didn’t even know until I read this and it was so nice to read about folklores that I grew up hearing. I love all the beautiful illustrations that helped enhanced my imagination. He also weaved topics about family responsibilities, love and understanding yourself into his story. I also love the little life lessons in Alexis’s journey and the growth she went through in that short time.

There is also a very important underlying message on the issue of dementia faced by senior adults. Alexia’s story is inspired by Daryl’s father who suffered from dementia and miss out on the chance to bond with his grandchild. This story highlights how we can treat dementia patients with a little more love, hope and faith, even when they struggle to remember you, even when hope seems bleak.

Even though this is a middle grade book catered to children, adults will definitely enjoy reading this too. It will bring a sense of nostalgia for adults. This definitely lifted my spirits and made me remember the good times shared with my grandparents.

📖synopsis
The story begins when Alexis’s grandpa suddenly lost his memory due to an unexpected and unavoidable accident. This led to Alexis and her grandma, along with their new companion, the troublesome imp(kenit) to venture out to the land of Mist and save her grandpa before he is forever lost in the depths of mist that is clouding his mind.

This story was inspired by the author’s father who unfortunately suffered from Alzheimer. And the main character, Alexis, is named after his daughter.

💭thoughts
This debut novel was truly pure enjoyment and brilliant! My imagine ran wild reading this! The plot and writing were witty, magical, fantastical and whimsical.✨

The adventures and the surprises that the characters went through were truly amusing to read about. There were even riddles and trials they had to face which made me play along with them. There was only one riddle that I got right! The rest I couldn’t even guess! 😅😂

The best part about this novel are the stories, fairytales and folktales told by grandpa to Alexis which helped her out with all the obstacles she had to face. And the mentions of the mythical creatures in Malay language was a wonderful treat. My fav creature is the ‘baku’ (dream-eater)! 🙌🏽

Of course, I can’t forget about the illustrations!
They are so pretty and enhanced my reading experience much more! 😍

Overall, if you want a book with lots of adventures and magical beings that are exciting and hilarious, then grab this book now! This book was a really sweet escape from reality. Also the themes in this book really touched my heart! 💗

In 2009, three months before the birth of his daughter Alexis, Daryl Kho’s father suffered a stroke. It brought on vascular dementia, which altered the family’s life forever.

Through that wintry dark time, and the spring that came from Alexis’ birth - a crucible was forged. In 2015, Daryl began to tell the story of Mistbound.

On an evening stroll, Alexis is having the best time sharing stories with Grandpa. He gets struck by the mists, and loses his faculty of mind and memory. Her usually stoic grandma is not whom Alexis thinks she is. The two set off on a quest to find the ingredients for “memory glue” to stick Grandpa back.

The quest that follows is an amazing, wildly imaginative one, reminiscent of our favourite Enid Blyton worlds BUT of an Asian influence. There are gnome-like creatures and fantastic beasts woven into a courageous search for the least likely ingredients in the most dangerous places.

Daryl writes in moments where Alexis has to take care of Grandpa. On the best days, there are “faraway smiles and cloudy gazes. The worst days are a “monsoon thunderstorm”. Oh my heart.

“What are dreams but memories waiting to be made? Memories make us who we are; dreams make us who we’ll become.

So who are we without memories? What happens when they’re broken?”

This is a beautiful piece of work by Daryl, with a lot of heart. He’s written an allegory on dementia and it’s effect on loved ones, but he’s also drawn on his own love of language to serve up some profound lessons in life.

I loved this book SO much. This has been my favourite middle-grade read of the season. I started reading this for the autumn half-term and finished the book in time for school to start because turning the pages was so easy. Daryl Kho has so ingeniously weaved Southeast Asian folklore and tales into this delightful "heroine's quest", engaging readers from start to finish. I have not come across a middle-grade novel like this before. More, please!

Kho's storytelling abilities are magical. He is able to weave authentic Asian myths and folktales into this whimsical story. Mist Bound brings me back to my childhood days and reminds me of why I fell in love with reading as a child. The backstory of this book also makes it even more meaningful as it truly underscores the value and joy of having our aged parents or grandparents in our lives.

This book also made me realise the severity of dementia - the foreword by the author really hit me hard.
