From the Kennedy assassination to September 11 attacks… The novel Mirror above the Abyss by Oleg Lurye is a sensational political thriller based on real and well-known tragic events and refuting the official versions. The intelligent action filled with facts and evidence appears to You. It proves that global events did not happen at all like it is generally understood. So, Kennedy wasn't killed by Oswald, who had been framed in advance, but by a woman - a professional sniper who worked on an unusual order. The man who planned and carried out the September 11 attacks in New York was just one kilometer from crumbling skyscrapers. The assassination attempt on Pope John Paul was being prepared to hide billion bank scams, and the pontiff knew about it. These and other significant events of the last 60 years turn out to be interconnected, leaving the trail to a criminal syndicate ... from one person, and from him to the highest establishment and intelligence services of the United States and other countries. In these times already, the "disappeared" archives belonging to those who died because of paying too much attention to the tragic events of September 11 end up with the American journalist of Russian origin Max Malin. Exciting events and mysterious coincidences, which many choose to forget about forever, lead the hero to dark shadows from the past. As a result of a complex and risky investigation, Malin discovers the perpetrators and mandators in the most remembered political assassination of the 20th century, the September 11 terrorist attack in New York, the assassination attempt on John Paul II, and the murder of a world-known banker. The novel is set in our time, and in parallel, it takes place in the days of the above horrific events - in 1963, 1981, 1999, and 2001. The book's ending is entirely unpredictable and shocking. The characters and protagonists of the novel are real and recognizable persons - from great politicians, billionaires, ministers of the Vatican to leaders of national and world crime syndicates. Most are acting under their real names. Of course, there are fantasy characters, but they are the connecting links in the chain of events. Some of the names are encrypted and easy to guess.
Oleg Lurye is an Israeli writer, journalist and author of high-profile journalistic investigations dealing with corruption cases and mafia activities in different countries, from Russia to the United States. Oleg Lurye has been repeatedly harassed, both by the secret services of various countries and by international criminal groups, because of his revealing articles and books. Two attempts have been made on his life. Oleg Lurye took part, over a period of about twenty years, in independent investigations of various major events, such as the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York, the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II, the assassination of President Kennedy, and the multibillion-dollar theft of international loan to Russia, in the 1990s. The results of these investigations, supplemented by the author's versions of the development of events, provided the basis of his novel A Mirror Above the Abyss. As the story unfolds, the author completely debunks well-known official versions of tragic events, referring to surprising facts and unlikely connections. At the same time, A Mirror Above the Abyss is easy to read, like a real criminal thriller. The action takes place both in our times and, in parallel, in 1963, 1981, 1999, and 2001, when the most infamous crimes of the century happened, be it President Kennedy’s assassination or the 9/11 destruction of WTC skyscrapers. Protagonists of the novel include both fictional characters and real major politicians, bankers, oligarchs, Vatican officials and heads of local and international criminal syndicates (some appear under their real names and others with slightly changed, but easily recognizable names). Oleg Lurye is a member of the Crime Writers' Association (CWA).
I received this from the author in giveaways and in paperback which I am happy about. Now for my honest opinion. Superbly researched and the footnotes were a nice touch. This is the author's opinion of major events and I believe most as they were previously proven by experts, Very well written and lots of danger and excitement for the main character. I do recommend this book to people that enjoy political books written that are part factual. The very last chapter is a surprise ending even though it is part of the fiction.
Won the book, book from Goodreads/Giveaway! I LOVED this book! It seriously is a page-turner! It IS a novel! I have lived through all the events that occurred in this book. I recall all of them but the billions sent to Russia - that seems fiction to me! You don't have to be a conspiracists theorist to believe or disbelieve something like what occurred in this book occurred! Anything, ANYTHING can be accomplished by the RICH! GOOD & EVIL! This just happens to be EVIL! Unless you agree with what this EVIL bagillionaire did the right things??!! ALSO - everyone needs to recognize a NARCISSISTIC PSYCHOPATH! They lie and believe their lies until it is the truth - in their minds! YES, I do know a narcissistic psychopath! They tell HUGE lies, not little white lies! HUGE! The ending of this book is incredible! I LOVED THIS BOOK! DO NOT, I SAID, DO NOT SKIP TO THE END! You will want to wait for this one!
Held my attention to the last page! Started this book on a flight to California for a “job”. My days were Crazy busy and only had the chance to read a bit at night but I was eager for every moment I got so I could read a few more pages. All of the “historical” events this book touches on are so widely known. But the spin that OLEG LURYE puts on what led to these events are incredible. Very interesting and thought provoking. I was also very pleased with all the footnotes that were provided through out the book. A good read in my opinion
A big thank you to the Author, Oleg Lurye for my Goodreads Giveaway win!
I wasn't sure what to expect with this book, but it sounded interesting with it's "what if" storyline so I was happy to receive the win. I'm not typically a fan of "political" stories, you get enough of that in every day life and that's not what I want when I'm reading. This however was interesting. There were times when I found myself very engrossed and then there were times when I found my interest drifting off. To actually think some of the most major events in my lifetime may not have actually happened as we were led to believe they did, really raises some questions - what if it really did happen the way it was written in Oleg's book? Maybe? I liked that aspect of the book and some of the intensity of it but at the same time, like I said before, I kind of got lost in some of it. I found Max and Jia's relationship a little odd in the sense that they fell in love with each other so quickly unless I drifted at their meeting and missed that they knew each other prior, but I don't think that's the case. There were a few other times I felt the story drag a little bit and so many different characters and names to remember along with their significance but overall I did like the book and still find myself thinking about it and wondering, "what if"?
Dear Goodreads: I have NOT reviewed a Kindle edition of this book. I only read real books!
If you're one of the many who believe the truth about the JFK assassination - that Oswald did not act alone - you're going to love this book!
What if, the JFK assassination was the result of not only a conspiracy, but it was orchestrated by a criminal mastermind who - for a fee - would set things in motion that would change the world? Toss in a few others, such as the 9/11 catastrophe, the attack on Pope John Paul II and a few others and you have the basis of this highly enjoyable book.
American journalist Max Malin stumbles onto this conspiracy quite by accident while looking at some photos and the story takes off from there. Since I don't do synopses for fear of their turning out to be spoilers, suffice it to say, Malin comes across and interacts with, during the course of his burgeoning investigation, some rather unsavory characters.
Israeli/Russian journalist/author Oleg Lurye has put together an imaginative yet thought-provoking piece of fiction which makes you think......what if? And that's what makes the book a worthwhile read, you find yourself asking, what if?
Get it - Read it - Enjoy It. It will be well worth your time!
A thought-provoking, conversation-starting what-if novel. For the tinfoil hat-wearing crowd, this was right up their alley. Also, the ones who believe in the cigarette smoking man from the X-Files might have existed. The plot was easy to follow and the entertainment research was top-notch. And that is why this is called fiction, and not non-fiction. As for entertainment purposes, and not reliable facts this was a very enjoyable read.
Are we living in the world of lies? What is the truth? What happened during the most tragic events of the twentieth century? Who are the true assassins and villains? A Mirror Above the Abyss offers a gasping alternate reality of our world. A very interesting concept worth reading and pondering!
A conspiracy story to cover every conspiracy story of any significance for several decades. I found the story to be very believable and the complex plot to be top notch. I didn’t buy the romance. It felt forced and unreal. I also thought the dialogue was very stilted. People just don’t talk like that, although I got the idea the book wasn’t written in English, so maybe it’s the translation, or maybe they do talk like that in Russia. When the narrator is doing the “talking”, it’s excellent. The last few chapters seemed to drag and be predictable. I have trouble keeping up with books that have lots of characters, but we met them one at a time and the author did a good job with reminders of who they are. I didn’t have any trouble.
I’ve never read a novel with so many explanatory footnotes! It’s pretty nice to have things explained so I didn’t have to do research on the internet. For instance, I don’t remember hearing about the Russian banking scandal. Footnotes gave me just enough explanation, as well as letting me know it was a real thing.
Overall, I think most people will enjoy this book. I appreciate the free copy from Goodreads. I’ve won a few books from them and have liked most of them. This one goes in the Like column.
I received this as a goodreads giveaway. Overall, I enjoyed it and there were some great action scenes and scenes of suspense. The antagonist was great! Seriously those were my favorite parts. I could see this becoming a movie or a limited series. The reason I didn’t give it more stars is because a lot of the dialogue was just so corny and like who talks like that. I also feel like Malin’s love interest was just throw in there and it just felt like it wasn’t really needed and I just didn’t like how that grew.
A very good read. Interesting and thoughtful. I only give the best mysteries four stars (consider above average 3 stars) and this is a very worthy candidate.. with author’s research to support the author’s tale. I’ll certainly read Oleg Lurye’s next book.
A conspiracy thriller that doesn't quite get there.
A reporter from the Washington Post is given evidence that 9/11 was an inside job, and we're off to the races. The prose is very awkward, and the story definitely drags in some places. Still there are some good parts. YMMV.
Thanks to the author for the goodreads giveaway and sending me a copy of the book!
This is not the type of book I typically read, fun to step out of my comfort zone a little. The story was interesting and made me wonder how much was fiction vs. actual facts. I wish there had been a little more character development with Jia, and maybe a slower build for the relationship between her and Max. The speed with which they fell in love seemed outrageous and as the reader all I knew about Jia before Max was in love with her was that she had a brother that was into not great things. By the time of her death I had no attachment to her and couldn’t understand Max’s reaction since I wasn’t bought in to the depth of their relationship. Her reappearances in his dreams seemed unimportant to the story and since I never got attached to her I could have done without them.
At one point in the story I wondered how much the protagonist Max resembles the author - both Russian born investigative journalists - and started wondering if some of this story isn’t wishful thinking for things the author may believe but can’t prove.
While I don’t see myself searching for answers on a connection between the major events used in the storyline, this did make me want to research a few things about the events I was already more familiar with.

Thank you to goodreads! This was a book with a very interesting conspiracy theory that all the major political assassinations and attempts since JFK were orchestrated by one man. The story included a lot of suspense and action although mid strife it did become a little tedious. (I took a break and returned to it after another read.) I appreciated all of the footnotes which were both thoughtful and informative. If you like political thrillers, I recommend you give it a try.
A political thriller that definitely gets you thinking. This book focuses on events that we all are familiar with, but looks at them from a different perspective from what is commonly conveyed.
This book is very different from what I normally read. I found it very interesting in how these events were tied together. Even though it is a work of fiction, a lot of research had to be done to be able to have credibility in the depictions of the events. You definitely need an open mind to appreciate this story.
A Mirror Above the Abyss by Oleg Lurye is a fast-paced novel of well-documented, historically tragic events interwoven into a web of connections with a group of fictional characters and situations. I enjoyed the international flavor of the settings. The moral questions posed by the protagonist and the answers he received from some of his wealthy contacts were unsettling. The book included plenty of "bad guys" chasing the hero, a journalist determined to get the whole story.
I won this book on Goodreads. This was an interesting story that I recommend to anyone that wonders about events that have happened from the Kennedy assassination to 9/11.
Great woven chronological thriller that spans from the 1960's to present day. Many crises created on the world stage have a reasonable hypothesis as to why and how.
This book could get you questioning every conspiracy there ever was in this world. So thought-provoking and how Oleg weaved the stories together is remarkable. You know Mr. Lurye had a lot of research to do for this book-thank you!
While this is fiction, Mr. Lurye gave his own little twist to the real life events that do make you think, What is??
The book is good, fast paced so be prepared to spend some time with this book. This is not a quick read!
Thank you for sharing this book. I will be sure to pass it on to others to enjoy!
Thank you to the author and Goodreads for the copy. I enjoyed the book. It did make wonder ‘what if this is the real truth’ in these significant parts of history. I appreciated the footnotes as there were some people, newspapers and events I was not familiar with. I appreciate learning history. The only thing is I think Malin’s character was strong enough without Ji. Ji, I felt, was a filler that was not needed
A complex political thriller based on real tragic events, such as the assassination of JFK and the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York, and refuting the versions we have all learned to be true. With a believable plot and characters, lots of action and suspense, I enjoyed piecing together this mystery as I followed reporter Max Malin in his quest to discover the hidden depths of some of the most tragic events to have occurred over the last handful of decades.
I was given this book through a Goodreads giveaway. Not being a conspiracy theorist, I found the plot convoluted if not completely implausible. Coupled with the stilted dialog, two-dimensional characters, and mishmash of fiction/fact, the book fell flat for me. Those who enjoy reading novels involving international intrigue will no doubt enjoy this book.
I liked reading this book . I was sucked in when it started talking about Kennedy . I liked how well this book was written and got my interest from the start to finish .
Charles (aka, Bedouin, 50+) had unique documents & was ready to share them with Maksim “Max” Malinin (Russian, 35, son, Washington Post investigative journalist, former US Army 10th Special Forces Group & US Army Special Forces: Green Beret, Afghanistan, Iraq, Harvard U) only. Over coffee Charles story began.
9/11/2001, Captain Philip Marshall (USAF) concluded Al-Qaeda, or any other organization acting was not responsible for the terrorist attacks. Philip (father) & his 2 children were found murdered, but its was concluded a suicide. Charles wanted $50 G’s for the packet of documents that had disappeared yrs. ago. Max went to the office to see Richard “Iron” Berwick (boss, Washington Post investigation dept. head). What did Max share with Jia (Chinese, f)? Mr. Edmond Jacob Safra (67, billionaire, banker) was already dead.
Hotel de Paris. Igor Larionov had vanished. Don Domenico Radore (La Cosa Nostra) met with Max. 9/11/2001, Eric Novack (72, older gentleman) looked up again both skyscrapers were on fire now. The western wing of the Pentagon had been hit. The 4th hijacked plane crashed in a field close to Shanksville, SW, PA. 2018, Paris, France. Hotel Lotti (Rue de Castiglione). A silver Peugeot took a different course & headed straight for Max. Several Japanese tourists had been barely missed also.
Richard notified Max that he was unemployed.
I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.
An awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very professionally written historical fiction thriller book. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a huge description list of unique characters, settings, facts etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great adventure movie, or better yet a mini-TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is an extremely easy rating of 5 stars.
Thank you for the free author; PDF; book Tony Parsons MSW (Washburn)
I initially didn't know what to expect when I started to read this book. I originally thought it was some sort of fiction documentary (if there is such a thing),But a few pages in I found a very interesting concept for a great thriller. A conspiracy nuts greatest dream. An evil genius reigns for 60 years and an investigative reporter wants to tell his story. They become linked together for a number of months and both get their wishes come true at the end. From start to finish this read never gets boring or slows down. The author keeps you on your toes and on the edge of your seat waiting for the big inevitable end that never comes. I love how Oleg Lurye makes a rather convincing story out of some of the biggest disasters of the last 50 years and how a pros pro finishes a job to the very last detail. This is the best book I have read in the last 6 months. I find that the KINDLE novels don't pack a punch as well as the novels put down on paper, but this one does. It is a very well thought out storyline weaving it's line through the decades. It held my attention until the end. 4 1/2 stars out of 5 for A MIRROR ABOVE THE ABYSS. Look for this one on Goodreads and Amazon.
Are these the answers to some of the mysteries of our age? Max has been unwittingly plunged into an abyss of great proportion, and he is now a wanted man. Did he plan to fall in love along the way, no. Does he want to be hunted, no. Can he stop to mourn when what he cherishes is lost, no. He must survive and find a way to get the information he is obtaining made public so he is no longer a target. How can he do this when the evil genius behind these tragedies is trying to kill him? Answer……read this book, you think I am going to tell you….ha! A great read for everyone who has wondered if there was a second shooter on the “grassy knoll”, and why such solid structures collapsed like houses of cards on that terrible day in September. I don’t know if these are the answers, but they surely made me wonder if all the truths are known.
