Crown and Crest #2

Forged in Cursed Flames

Rate this book
Lady Clover’s life suddenly takes a turn for the worse when she’s framed for necromancy by Princess Camellia. She and the princess both know she’s not a dark magic user, but little good that does Clover when Camellia disappears.

The kingdom is in turmoil over the abduction of their beloved princess, and Clover is determined to find her way into the rescue party—even if Henrik, the most handsome commander in all Caldenbauer and the man of her reoccurring dreams, is in charge.

He suspects Clover’s guilty.

Clover thinks she should have pushed him into the troll pit when she had the chance.

Once again, they’re at odds, but they have no choice but to play nice if they want to find Camellia—especially when they discover their mission will take them into the heart of Ferradelle, the High Vale elves’ territory.

They’re going to need a guide. Thankfully, they know an elf who just might help them…for a price.

Forged in Cursed Flames is the second book in Crown and Crest, a connected fantasy romance series full of humor, adventure, and a good helping of epic action. The books are perfect for readers who enjoy feisty main characters, handsome male leads, plenty of banter, and an enemies-to-lovers style romance.

A fun sequel with a lot more action then the first. Leaves you on a cliff hanger so don't read this series if that upsets you. These are just fun to read. So irritated I can't keep reading. Can't believe I haven't gotten bored of this author. :}

This picks up shortly after book one. The team is back together and on to another adventure, into the lands of the High Vale to rescue the Princess. Or so they think. Things aren't what they seem and they're in for a few surprises.

I admit, I had a bit of a harder time with this one. I didn't love it as much as the first book. I love the characters, but I was little bored with all the men being in love with Clover! lol. I liked Bartholomew in the first book, his young optimistic and energetic personal was endearing and added some lightheartedness to the story, but he did a complete 180 here and was just mopey that Clover didn't like him. I would have liked to see his character more consistent with the first book and not have a crush on Clover at all.

I am still enjoying the series and am curious to see where things will go.

They're back! Henrick, Clover and friends are right back into the thick of things as they proceed in their adventures. This book picks up right where the last book left off so you must read this series in order. And of course, this book leaves us hanging in anticipation of what is to come next. I sort of had a moment of frustration at the end. Cliffhangers aren't my favorite! AAAAAHHHHH!

Do you like adventure? You've got it here. On every page. On land, on boat and in a royal castle.
Do you like fantasy? It's right here. The cast of characters are all over the fantasy spectrum.
Good VS. Evil? Yup. Staring you in the face. The evil keeps getting bigger in this book.
Romance? It's progressing! There are so many charged moments between Henrick and Clover. In fact, most of them are charged one way or another. haha Lots of tension here, friends.

This story is fast paced and just full of everything I've come to love and expect from Shari Tapscott and now, her husband. I'm so glad they are writing in this genre! I'll be anxiously waiting and watching for the next installment of this series! It cannot come soon enough.

Content: mild violence, mild peril. Dark magic.

- I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.

Why must every single book have a love triangle?! I mean, don't authors have anything else to think of? Dude, kill the MC, make her deaf, get the love interest kidnapped!
So many things can make a book interesting!
Why, pray tell me, must you break the heart of the love interest!!

I binged this, so my thoughts on individual books are brief, so I included a general series paragraph thoughts:
This series is full of absolutely INCREDIBLE characters, the side characters vying for the attention along with(or in some cases, stealing the spotlight entirely from) the main characters. The plot is gripping and completely sucks you in and requires you to read the complete series in a week. Seriously, there's no such thing as casually reading a Tapscott series. You will binge them. Just clear your schedule now. It was also hilarious, made my tear up a few times, and had just utterly delightful worldbuilding that felt so real. And there were some really lovely themes woven in, too, especially in the last book. *sobs*
Forged in Cursed Flames:
Herein was born and blossomed my affection for Lawrence. Look. I love Henrik. He's so noble and patient and heroic. How could you NOT? You can't not. Henrik is great. But Lawrence? He's hilarious and charming and CLEARLY has so much depth to him. I JUST WANT HIM TO BE HAPPY. #teamLawrenceforever
Also, that cliff tho. Talk about going out with a bang.

How did I miss this release?!

Actually, I know exactly how. I’ve been rereading Will Wight’s Cradle series in preparation for Reaper, and then somehow, I got sucked back into the Elder Empire series...

I digress.

So, it’s 2:53 AM where I live.

Did I stay up to finish Forged in Cursed Flames?

Yes.

Will I regret it in a few hours when I need to be conscious long enough to get my kids off to school?

Most likely.

Would I do it again?

Absolutely.

To avoid spoilers, I won’t provide a summary... but let’s just say that things are heating up. Our two characters finally admit they have feelings for each other at the WORST possible time, and a happily ever after is looking impossible due to the circumstances... but the slow burn torture is freaking delicious.

The fact that I have to wait for the third book to be written is a crime against humanity.

HIGHLY recommend this series to anyone who likes spicy-lite fantasy romance, enemies to lovers, and found families.

Cue the swoon!!

Oh my goodness -this series!!! Where do I even begin?! I love that it picks up right where the other left off, and immediately things are tense and another quest begins. I adore the supporting characters, the witty banter, the action and suspense, but most of all the SWOON! After nearly two books, danger and peril and lots of flirting, countless moments of romantic tension that always seems to get cut off, there are some serious toe-curling moments in this book! I love Henrik and Clover! Gah, I would write more but I have seriously got to get back to the next book in the series!!

Now that was intense 😳. The ending goes beyond ‘cliffhanger’… The book is action packed, funny, and thoroughly engaging. I will warn, however, that the romance is starting to get a little too steamy for my taste. Not that anything has gone beyond kissing/holding, but there is enough lustful thoughts and words to cross the line for me.

fabulous!

I ignored all my responsibilities so that I could read this. And wow! I am not mad about that decision. This book picks up right where Knight from the Ashes ends. It follows Henrik and Clover on their next adventure, with some old friends and some new sidekicks. It pulls at your heartstrings in all the right way and leaves you begging for more. Cannot wait for the the next one.

Once again, Shari and Jake have written an epic adventure. And released early!

Similar to Book 1, Henrik is given a quest from the King, in turn, he will receive his seal and! Princess Camellia’s hand in marriage. Poor guy!

Along for the journey is Clover, yay!, Bartholomew, Pranmore, Prince Lawrence, and Ayan (remember him?!). If you’ve read book one, you know who they all are, and why exactly this makes for such an interesting group! But my oh my is it fun.

Henrik and Clover have a lot of swoony moments in this book. Finally! So much tension and passion. Just what we wanted. Hehe.

The story is packed with adventure, laughs and romance. You’ll definitely want to give it a read.

Book 3, will be released in May 2022. Possibly sooner…fingers crossed!
BUT! If you can’t wait that long for more of Henrik and Clover, Shari and Jake have a special Bonus Story for us over the holidays. All you need to do is sign up for their newsletter (which is linked at the end of the book).

Content: clean
Romance: swooooony kisses. ;P
Violence: mild. Punching, sword fights, monster attacks, that’s sort of thing. Same as Book 1.
Language: none.

A strong second book in the Crown and Crest series. I enjoyed this one, and thought the plot moved on from the first book quite well. I liked the flirtier side of Henrik, and it was good to get to know more of Lawrence and Ayan. I loved that Maisel showed up at random times, and her fierce loyalty to “Calendula”.

I didn’t particularly love Clover in this installment. In the first book, she was pretty fierce, and wielded her bow regularly. In this book she felt like more of a hand-wringing maiden. It mentions her wanting to get into fights, but mostly she seems like a liability, and that’s kind of a disappointment. I like when the heroines can fend more for themselves.

I had hoped we’d get a bit more time in Ferradellel and a greater understanding of the High Vales, but maybe that will come later. I’m intrigued by the magic use here, especially in regards to Camellia. It’s still not clear what the necklaces do, so I’m looking forward to seeing the plot develop. Overall, I really enjoyed it, and look forward to book three.

I am loving this series! The almost forbidden love tension, the banter between all the characters, the sort of love triangle, the adventure I am here for it all. Their rag-tag group is so loveable and quirky, fun, and will make you giggle just a little bit🤭
The relationship between, Henrik and Clover finally reaches the point in this one where they can no longer deny it, they give in and we get the swooniest kissing scene that makes so happy because they finally did it!! And this story has great side characters which I love. There is never a boring moment for them nor as a reader, it's fairly well paced not slow, but not too fast either just right, with more world building and paints really good imagery in your mind of what this place looks like. The end is where it got really interesting, with plots being discovered, truths being spilled, danger, desperation, twists and a cliffhanger ending. I really enjoyed this one and can't wait to see how the story continues, it's really fun and cute!

I love Clover.
I ship Lawrence and Audra.
Bartholomew is so sweet.
I need more Maisel scenes.
Pranmore is 💯.
I didn't like Henrik at first but now I love himmm.
I like Ayan but I feel really bad for him.
I hate Camellia soo much.

I really think Lawrence has genuine feelings for Clover he just doesn't know how to express it. I feel really bad for him. I hope he gets together with Audra. I think they would make a really great couple, I love their banter❤️❤️❤️.

"But there is something about the way I’ve caught him looking at her on this mission—secret, lingering glimpses that last a few seconds too long, an affectionate smile cast her way when she isn’t paying attention.
Lawrence has feelings for Clover. He truly cares for her, and not only as a man cares for a friend."

I really liked how Clover handled the scene she Clover talked to Bartholomew about his unrequited feelings for Clover.

“I know what it’s like to have your heart set upon someone unsuitable for you,” I say. “The last thing I want to do is crush Bartholomew, even if his feelings seem foolish to us.”

"Stay exactly as you are. What feels like flaws to you are actually veins of gold.”

This is book two of the Crown and Crest series and picks up where book one left off - the Princess is missing, Clover has been insinuated as having something to do with it, and Henrik is tasked with finding Camellia and bringing her back safely.

About 70% of this book feels like set up; Henrik and Clover (and companions) go into a dukedom that sounds a lot like The Everglades-Meets-Venice. It’s swampy, buggy, and most people get around by magic-powered gondolas.

The last quarter of this book is where all the action takes place. It was so fast paced as events unfolded rapidly and (probably important) new characters were introduced.
We still have the push-pull of “will they won’t they” between Clover and Henrik, and add in the royal siblings Lawrence and Camellia, and there’s a lot of drama.

I’m sad that the last two books of this series aren’t available as audiobooks. That means I can’t get through them as fast. :(

It's been a long time since I found such a good story. The first adventure took place in the mountains; this one takes place in the swamp.

In the first book, Lawrence was depicted as an immature, arrogant, and annoying royal. At first, I was with Henrik; why would Clover be his friend? He must be just like Camellia. However, during this book, there are small glimpses of a Prince who cares a lot about his family, his kingdom, and Clover.

This time, Henrik is the *sshole who refuses to believe Clover. Lawrence is on her side since minute 1 but Henrik has doubts about Clover being a sorceress. I was frustrated, but I guess Lawrence has been her friend for years while Henrik for less than a month.

The romance between Clover and Henrik was sweet, leaving me breathless. Nevertheless, I have a small hope Lawrence will end up with Clover as his queen.

Fun adventure. Lots of fantastic characters. That’s what I like most about this series, the characters. The ending was pretty good. Still love Pranmore the most. Didn’t feel the chemistry between Clover and Henrik. All their moments felt forced. I didn’t feel that searing tension that makes a good romance. Yeah, they make out a few times, but it was a without purpose other than to have them make out. Still a cute story, with characters I like. I really want to see Lawerence happy, with the high elf chick. Oh, why are there so many similar names that start with A? The king, the duke, the high vale king… I can’t keep them straight.

Romping Good Time!

Forged in Cursed Flames is an action packed and fun addition to the Crown and Crest series. Clover and Henrik go on a grand adventure together and we get to see their relationship slowly evolve. I really enjoy getting the POV of both main characters. The side characters are also great. Good banter, mild conflict and action, and slow burn romance. Winning combination!

Wow! What an ending! I already have the next book on my Kindle ready to continue the story.

So much romantic intensity between the obvious love between Henrik and Clover, the vying unspoken love of Lawrence, the evil powerful magic and jealousy of Camellia. That does not even address the intense drama of a fallen king, unbreakable contracts, and the power of black magic holding people in thrall.

Where will this go next and how will Henrik and Clover ever get their HEA? Heading on to book 3, Fall of the Ember Throne, but already nervous about the violence and potential deadly interactions that may be coming.

Such a fun and yet dramatic sequel. The stakes are higher, the pressures are mounting, the relationships are becoming more intricate and the plot is moving at a perfect speed; not too slow but not too fast. There’s action and adventure and romance and banter and deception. Introducing new key players to the plot really refreshed it and didn’t make it feel like a rehash of the first. We also got to know more about the characters we already know and love or vehemently hate. It’s not typical for me to say but I think the sequel has outdone the first book which makes me so excited to read the third and fourth!!!

Magic, betrayal, loyal knights, hidden feelings, and an ending that will leave a reader begging for the next book long before Spring. I cannot tell you how much I love Henrick and Clover, but Lawrence snuck up on me in this book, and I can't help but love him a little, too. And Ayan. This book series has so many great characters. And, the slow-burn romance from book one made my heart clench in this book, but I have to honestly admit that with my growing affinity for Lawrence....well, I'd be okay with a few twists and bumps along the way.

Amazing!!! Loved it! Will pray they complete the next one ahead of schedule as I’m on pins and needles! This book was my favorite kind. I appreciate the genuine relationships among those working together and the integrity of the characters. The witty banter made me laugh out loud several times! I couldn’t read in bed because I might wake up my husband! Thoroughly entertaining! I loved it, and highly recommend this series!

Great read

Oh my goodness. I hate reading a series while they ate being written. I want book 3 now. I love these characters. This book has some great lines. I love how Henrik and Clover's relationship has gone from dislike to funny friends to love. I also like the other characters, even Lawrence, and hope they get their happily ever after too! It looks like some other relationships might begin. Woohoo!

quick easy read, with a great story

I’ve been in a reading slump for awhile. But this series pulled me out of it. After the first book I wasn’t sure if I’d continue, but I’m glad I did. It’s a cool world, with a different magic system, it’s inventive and a great slow burn romance. I also love that they avoided a love triangle, it would have been easy to fall into but they avoided it nicely.

I didn't like this one quite as much as the first, but I'm in it for the long haul at this point! Henrik and Clover do not disappoint. But truly, the secondary characters continue to elevate these books. I love Pranmore, Maisel, Ayan and even Lawrence is growing on me! Action, romance, and humor all in one, what more could you want? Can't wait to see what's next for Henrik and Clover as everything and everyone seems to be conspiring to keep them apart.
