Safiya needs the help of the consortium to finish her quest, but nothing could prepare her for them. They are not interested in her meddling.
Torn between lies and allegiances, she turns to the quorum for help. Teaming up with these legendary beings should give her the upper hand, but their reluctance only proves just how out of control the situation has become. She realizes she has overlooked a much larger and far more destructive problem than the dark ones. A problem that they may not be able to stop.
As she and her companions plan to make their final stand, a mistake destroys everything they have been working towards.

This is a great continuation of this awesome series! It’s action packed and full of drama, it’s full of twists and turns to keep you on your toes ad. I could not put it down! It’s a great world that the author has created and I just love her characters.
This is book five of the Twisted Magic series and finds Saf (Safiya) and her friends Fiona and Randall, along with witch Sasmita, and former members of the quorum Otilia and Bhaskar, having helped to stop four of the dark mages and witches who escaped from the consortium’s vault. Who released them from the supposedly imprenatrable vault is unknown. Only the two keys, Bhaskar and Chaand, can open and close the vault, so who else had the power to do it? The group need to meet with the consortium to offload the three portraits they already have in the back of Otilia’s motorhome, before the mages and witches manage to break free from the pictures once more, to wreak havoc on their world. On top of that, Sasmita is getting desperate to get her son Sachin back from the bounty hunter who found him. Why the bounty hunter wants the blood of all seven dark mages and witches, is unclear and it certainly can’t be for anything good! Once they reach the consortium, she finds herself in the presence of four stone statutes, only one of which turns to face her and speak at once, and they aren’t really very interested in her request to access the vault to lock away the portraits she has helped to capture the evil mages within. They have their own plans and it seems she is not important to their plans. They haven’t sent out Stone’s replacement, his mentee hunter, saying he isn’t ready to face the dark mages and witches. She is sent off through a portal to another pocket world and the person she was told would be there, the second key Chaand, is not there. She has been tricked and the world she is on starts to implode. She finds the skeleton of someone with an old journal, inside a broken airship. He was apparently one of the beings called a Builder and died there, unable to reach an escape. She has been sent into a trap and finally manages to get her untrained magic to create a way to raise the airship and travel to a portal. It leads her back to the consortium, where she finds her friends have been sent back home and only she is kept by the consortium in some sort of plush cell. She is visited by the trainee hunter Kadar, the last of the hunters and so someone that can’t be sacrificed. Kadar travels with her to tackle the next dark mage, who is in Egypt, reliving the legends of old, with the plagues of old coming back to life. They go to the wrong building at first, trying to locate the mage’s portrait, then come face to face with him before he can realise they are dangerous. They have to regroup and try to figure out what he is doing and how to get to his portrait without being stopped. What they manage to do to distract the dark mage, isn’t perfect and ends in a sacrifice, but the mage doesn’t kill Saf. He seems puzzled by her and unable to actually kill her. Something Kadar was skirting around when he talked to her before, is bubbling up in her unconscious. She needs to know more about her own background and where her and her twin sister Jada’s magic came from. A comment about her being blessed by the gods, raises a few questions. She manages to persuade him to help her and the rest of the quorum are gathered and become somewhat independent of the consortium and agree to help her and her friends. Sasmita’s need for the blood of the dark witch Elizabeth Brown, who Joseph Stone trapped and returned to the vault, makes them do something unplanned and now with the general of the consortium’s army after them. Death of a key component stops their plans in their tracks and leaves Sasmita unable to complete what was asked for, in return for her son’s life. Lots of action in this instalment of the storyline, but also heartbreak and loss. Some of her questions may be answered, but they may cause her more issues than relief. “Twisted Shadows” is the fifth instalment in the “Twisted Magic” mystery urban fantasy series by Rainy Kaye, whose main character (Safiya Morgan) originally worked as a life coach for both ‘normal’ and supernatural clients, in a small town (Green River) in Nebraska, and whose path has led her the seals and put her in the way of the Consortium at the very same time.
After her stint with Yuto to try to prevent the breaking down of the seal, Safiya has come to the conclusion that to be able to finish her quest and fulfil her fate, she will have to come to terms with the Consortium and work with them. Unfortunately, the Consortium is not interested in joint forces, and resent what they consider Safiya’s meddling in their matters. And thus, Safiya turns to the quorum for help, finding herself – one more- very out of her own depth.
A thrilling, captivating story, fast-paced and action-packed, with interesting characters and a well-balanced mix between pure action, character development and world-building. Nicely written and easy-to-follow and read, with an enticing plot and a satisfactory resolution, that nevertheless lefts the reader already wishing for the next instalment in the series.
Our heroine is faced with roadblocks every way she turns and very few that are willing to help. Is this going to be the end of her quest?
This is book five of the series. It works pretty well as a standalone, but by this point you are missing a lot of background. I would recommend starting at the beginning rather than here.
This is an urban fantasy story. The story is well written and easy to read with a fascinating setting that nicely developed and a bit dark. The cast of characters is diverse and nicely detailed with unique personalities. The plot continues to be fast paced and full of action, mystery, and intrigue. Put it all together and you have another great book in the series. As we approach the end, I am more anxious than ever to see what comes next.
Highly recommended

I'm a little torn on this. I feel like the characters went against their nature in this book too much. We've learned a lot about them, and if you think they are going to do something, you'd be wrong. It will be the opposite, and it will leave you scratching your head and asking why.
Also, what the heck was with the apprentice hunter who was utterly useless. I can't imagine him to be that bad based on what we knew about the mentor.

This is a wonderful continuation of a good series. There is plenty of action and the characters are great. This book leaves the reader wanting more without dropping us off a cliff. I enjoy this writing style and the world that this author has created! No Spoilers Here!
