It should come as no surprise to ANYONE reading/seeing this review, that the second this was announced I jumped all over it and devoured it ASAP.

Now, obviously you are aware of my fanatical devotion to all things Pyper. But – to be honest – I was very worried about this one. Not that I didn’t think I wouldn’t like it. No, that I wouldn’t even be able to enjoy it. I’ve never done a single audio book before. I’m a very methodical reader and have a schedule and like to stay with it. I also don’t like distractions and enjoy being able to go back and re-read sentences, passages etc and digest sections.

Don’t get me wrong – if you love audio books, all the power to you – but for me, it’s always been tough to consider. I don’t have the time to sit and listen. That’s my reality.

But for this – I knew I’d need to force myself out of my comfort zone and attempt it.

A few things before we dive deeper into what makes ‘Oracle’ tick.

The first – I actually really enjoyed listening to this. It took me maybe three or four chapters to find a groove and to figure out the speed at which I found it to be most enjoyable (1.4x for me).

The second – Joshua Jackson absolutely NAILS this narration. I have no experience with anyone else, but his was picture perfect for narrating the story, for the characters and his delivery specifically for The Bone Man was phenomenal. I’d have to imagine he’s already under contract for the sequel drama ‘Oracle: The Dreamland Murders.’

Lastly – even with this being read by someone else and me not reading this – this is 1000000% an Andrew Pyper book. From the way sentences are crafted, characters dialogue, setting and environment as a character. Time and time again, you know you’re in Pyper’s masterful hands.

What I liked: Nate Russo is a haunted man. Suffering from an ability to connect with people and see events and horrible moments through touch, he’s not only running from his childhood, but also running from the feeling he somehow failed his family.

Pyper takes a simple man and a simple story and infuses it with all of the best bits from his previous work. This is crime-fiction, psychological thriller and haunted house all done to the nth degree. We get the dread of ‘The Guardians’ the hunt of ‘The Demonologist’ and the never ending fear of ‘The Killing Circle.’

But at the heart of this story, we get Nate Russo (who is a full on blend of Bartholomew Crane/Patrick Rush/Danny Orchard/David Ullman) who knows the thing that haunted him in his childhood home, the thing he called The Bone Man, is ultimately responsible for not only Russo’s gift, but also the mysterious disappearances Nate is now involved in solving.

Pyper weaves a fast-paced-who-done-it narrative, while using the small town aspect to make everyone a possible suspect and keeping the reader (listener) guessing with deflections and landmines all over the place. I would estimate that over a dozen times I said to myself ‘ah ha! it’s this character or that character’ and each and every single time I was wrong.

With The Bone Man, Andrew has finally delivered a true ‘monster’ story. The only other book he’s released with anything close to this would be ‘The Damned’ with Ash trying desperately to lure her brother Danny to the underworld. Here, we get a real/imagined, flesh-and-blood boogeyman which made me almost shout with joy when I realized that we were being given this type of story from an author as deft as Pyper. And guess what? He nails that character.

The Bone Man was absolutely terrifying. Every single time Jackson would slip into that voice, that timber and deliver the lines of The Bone Man, it felt like it was right beside me, as Nate did himself. And the beauty of The Bone Man character was that not only did we get a horrific and truly awful back story, but we had a WHY. A why to this man, this creature doing what it was doing and ultimately why he choose these innocent kids over and over again.

The secondary characters were great, Fernandes (I hope I spelled that correctly) and Tillman making for great cohorts to both work with Nate but also to keep him in check when he goes off the rails.

And I’ve often mentioned how Pyper utilizes setting so well. Here, the absolute best set piece was Russo’s childhood home, a place of darkened floor boards and wallpaper peeling from the walls. The descriptions of this place were so well done, so lush and vivid that you could picture it and smell it as though you were there.

*As a side note – I know some of you were thrown off when Joshua Jackson was announced as the narrator. For me, I smiled from ear to ear. Just ask my wife. A few years back I wrote an essay on how Andrew Pyper and The Tragically Hip made me a better writer. Within I reference one of my all-time favorite movies – One Week. Starring? That’s right – Joshua Jackson. You know who has a cameo in it? Gord Downie. The circle/cycle continues. Amazing.

What I didn’t like: It is hard to actually discuss what I didn’t like here – as I need to stay spoiler free – but this is the best I can do: the person ultimately responsible for the main events in this story – I wish we had a bit more of them earlier on and a bit more of their involvement. I can’t describe more of that, but when you listen to this and want to discuss it more later, feel free to DM me.

Why you should buy this: I’ll state this here and now (even though I’ve been practically begging for this since it was announced!) but this really does need to be released as a novel. Not only for those unable to hear or listen to audiobooks, but I think Andrew’s once again delivered a masterclass in story telling and how to phenomenally lay out your beginning, middle and ending. If you’re an Andrew fan, you’re already excited to get on this, but for those who haven’t experienced Pyper’s work yet – this showcases why he’s a master at crime fiction/dark fiction/psychological thrillers and emotional horror. He has a way of weaving words around and having them gnaw at your soul.

Another prime example of why Andrew Pyper is my favorite author. Now, I sit back and await the next novel.

I found this in the Audible Plus catalogue and thought I’d give it a listen because it was read by Joshua Jackson. I was a teenage girl in the 90’s so clearly I was obsessed with Dawson’s Creek. So, I was pleasantly surprised when I found myself loving this book! The performance was great, the story was fantastic! It grabbed me from the beginning and I was on the edge of my seat the entire book!

A psychic working with the FBI is on the case to solve a string of murders similar enough to have been committed by a serial killer even though they were committed by different people. If you are looking for a creepy mystery, this should be your next read! I will absolutely be checking out other books by this author!

Oracle
By Andrew Pyper
I think this is the first book I've read by this author, and I am very pleased indeed! What a wonderfully evil and suspenseful book. Great use of psychic abilities with a terrific plot. Loved the characters and world building. Definitely plan to read more by this author.

[2.5 stars] Love Josh Jackson and his narration, but I found the mystery mediocre. I was surprised to learn that this had been written specifically for audio, as I didn’t find the dialogue or narrative structure really lent itself well to the format.

"Deep shit was it, as I recall," I hear myself talking in Joshua Jackson's (aka Nathaniel Russo's) voice.

In the supernatural thriller Oracle, Andrew Pyper delivers a new take (or perhaps, the old one) on a haunted house/scary ghost theme.

At age 7, Nathaniel Russo told his parents that he saw a ghost, somebody he called the Bone Man, during the nights. His parents, desperate for cash, made a sensation out of the story to sell it to journalists. Nothing came out, and the family moved away from Johnstown, New York. But Nathaniel received a special gift from the Bone Man, an ability to 'read' people whenever he touched them. When Nathaniel grew older, the FBI exploited his talents in searches for missing people. They never found anybody alive, though. Was there a particular reason for that?

Except for the supernatural talent of the main hero (and the ghost), there is nothing in the books out of this realm: no angels, demons, or long reflections on life and death. Three-dimensional, relatable characters constitute the attractive core of the story, which can be labeled as a supernatural and psychological thriller simultaneously. If we compare it to Stephen King's 'It,' the horrors are not exclusively conveyed through the foul smell or peeled-off skin of a clown but through the cold-bloodiness of the murders and desperation of the detectives trying to find the killer. Joshua Jackson alone managed to tell the story from multiple angles, talking in different voices, some moments torturous for me as a mom of two.

The book will be a welcomed companion for those who want a solid psychological thriller with an unostentatious supernatural element. Not suitable for minors, obviously.

This book could definitely have benefitted from a great editor. While the concept was interesting and suspenseful, I got a bit tired of The repetitive nature of it. The character development was poor. I felt nothing for Nathanial other than some mild pity and a desire to smack him with a “snap out of it”. His FBI cronies (I don’t even recall their names - they were so unmemorable) were one dimensional stereotypes with no personalities of their own. The story could have been half as long. Then we just ended like hmmm - what? Literally “the end” would have been just as good. It’s too bad the potential of this book was never seen.

I'm going to file this book under "utter surprise in all the best ways" + "deliciously creepy, compulsive read" + "Joshua Jackson can do no wrong".

Did I snag this book off Audible solely because Joshua Jackson reads it and I've been obsessed with him since Dawson's? 100%. Did I get every tingly feeling every time he said the character name "Audrey". Ummmm. 100%. He can talk in my ear any day of the week. Swoon.

But in all seriousness this is a thoroughly entertaining, full on creepy book that I couldn't stop listening to. I haven't heard such a well executed creepy voice since I listened to The Bright Lands. Shiver.

Nate Russo is a psychic who partners with the FBI on abductions and murders across the country. He has the ability to see events and moments of the missing, by physically touching someone connected to the missing person. These visions haunt him, as does his past, and it's a power he never wanted and cannot escape.

A new case forces Nate to return to the hometown that he was more than happy to leave behind. But this story proves you can't outrun your past.

This has it all - FBI/police investigation, psychological thriller and the supernatural. We get a taste of Amityville here along with one of my favorite tropes - what I've dubbed 'the reluctant return home'.

I was all in and truly wasn't sure where this story was going to go or how it would end. So well done. And please can more people hire Joshua Jackson to read their books?

The series continues with Book #2 in a podcast format - Oracle 2 The Dreamland Murders.

This came up for free on my audio book app, so I thought I’d give it a whirl. It was a little outside of my usual genre, but I quite enjoyed it. Nate Russo is a brash, formidable, and self-centered character but also a softy at heart. He was a conundrum and I found myself rooting for him. A touch of sci-fi and a lot of mystery, and best of all, I had most of the answers I’d want by the end. Plus listening to Joshua Jackson, was an added bonus!

Audible books are a peculiar thing, sometimes I think that the narrator and the presentation is just as important as the author and their story.

I’ve always enjoyed Andrew Pyper’s books, and I was looking forward to enjoying the Audible version of Oracle.

It really took me some time to get into Oracle, I didn’t find any of the characters likeable; Jackson seemed to lack differentiation in voices for his characters, it seemed like every character was Pacey (I feel bad for Joshua Jackson – he is a very talented actor yet is forever tied to one role). But as time and the story went on, it grew on me.

Pyper and Jackson, together, created an exceptionally dark atmosphere, one that I really enjoyed immersing myself into. When you look at the synopsis it may seem like you’ve seen or read this sort of thing before, but Pyper really goes to some different and intriguing places.

In the end, the team built a connection between myself and Nate Russo. He was a troubled character, just trying to do the right thing at any cost. Oracle was a mysterious who-done-it, with some great twists and turns along the way. I was kept guessing right to the bitter end.

2.5 stars, rounded to 3 for the excellence of the narrator.

Nate Russo assists the FBI with missing persons investigations. He does not like to think of himself as a psychic, more a seer. He's gift allows him to help find the missing, but also have him feel and experience their terror. This is not a gift Nate wanted, but rather "bestowed" on him by The Bone Man - the terrifying ghost from he's childhood home .....

Now The Bone Man has stepped up the game and Nate is drawn back to his hometown to try and find a missing girl before it is to late.

The narration was excellent but the story a bit mediocre. The final reveal on The Bone Man's origin story was a real let-down and the ending not a surprise at all. The author wrote this exclusively for audio, however, it did not feel like the dialogue was especially suited to that medium.

3.5 🌟
I listened to this audiobook several years ago and found it intriguing. My 2nd time listening to it was quite the same! I find Nate Russo to be fascinating with his seeing abilities. Particularly them coming about with what he experienced as a kid in that house. CrEePy!! I would've liked it more if his character had been more developed. The haunting and supernatural elements of this story were what drew me in the most. I know so many people liked this book for the simple fact that Joshua Jackson narrated it. I can admit that I, too, was a fan of Dawson's Creek back in the day, lol, but I was drawn to this book from its premise. Although the narrator was nice to listen to! This book is missing something that would've made it at least 4 stars, but I'm not sure what that is. 🤔 All in all, it's a pretty good book!

Once I got past the slightly clumsy read-these- newspaper-articles-to-get-the-backstory start and on to the first chapter, this was a hell of a ride.

A supernatural thriller that felt fresh and kept turning up the tension until the final sentence.

An evil at its heart that was original, gruesome and fully realised. >A hero so broken he barely functions.

A series of races against time that were more than a puzzle because the emotions attached to the outcomes were so intense.

Most of the action was set in the husk of a once prosperous town in Upstate New York where the smell of desperation and failure is as pervasive as the reek of the tanning vats that once made the city wealthy.

A plot filled with discoveries that almost always lead to either disappointment or fear or doubt but which propel the reader forward with a growing need to know and a strengthening desire for the fractured hero finally to succeed.

The icing on the cake was pretty much perfect narration from Joshua Jackson.

And all that good stuff came to me free as part of my Audible membership.

What more could I ask for?

The storyline was good. But I think my problem is that I don’t enjoy audiobooks. Because I didn’t listen to the book consistently enough, I would lose interest in the books or forget where the story was. I do enjoy self help audio books though.

Oracle is a fantastic listen. The voices Joshua Jackson uses enhance the story, especially the Bone Man’s voice - perfectly creepy. The story kept me guessing until the very end. This spooky, thriller ghost story is well done, fast-paced, and highly recommended.

4 creeptastic stars for Oracle, written by Andrew Pyper, narrated by Joshua Jackson.

As we head into spooky season, if you're looking for a creepy ghost story, this one is definitely worth a listen! Nate has a ghost in his head, one that's been there since he was a child, one he calls the Bone Man. The ghost is malicious and infects anyone he gets inside, causing them to do evil things. Nate, however, has been presented with a psychic gift and it's up to him to stop the Bone Man and his puppets before it's too late.

This one is creepy and atmospheric with a compelling plot. And, come on, who doesn't love Joshua Jackson? That voice is perfect for this chilling horror story. I highly recommend giving it a listen!

I found the story hauntingly memorable! It was the flame on a slow burning candle that suddenly topples and sets it's surrounding ablaze. Raw, emotionally charged and brutal throughout the tale also has great depth and quiet moments to be savored. This in my humble opinion was thanks largely in part to Joshua Jackson's outstanding performance. At times, I envisioned his portrayal of traumatized, world weary modern day Nate Russo as a classic Noir detective. Seemingly beat down, hanging on by a thread, somewhat reluctant and yet getting the job done in the end no matter the cast to himself. His subtle switches between male and female characters, a bevy of emotions and the narrative made for an intense experience.

Touched by an evil entity as a child, Nathaniel has the ability to see clues to abductions through the eyes of the victims. Working with the FBI, he runs a losing race as the entity calls all the shots. Now, having given up, he is called back to where it all began, and he must figure out the clues before a child dies at the hands of a monster.

The story is very faced-paced and both the police procedural and the horror of the preternatural make this a winner. Right up to the last pages, the author holds reader by the throat. One of Pyper’s best!
