The Aldoran Chronicles #3

The Four-Part Key

Rate this book
An ancient proverb holds the key to restoring the long-awaited wizard fortress of Aero’set.

Sitting in the front room of his family’s cottage, TY listens intently as Nyalis conveys the urgency of his upcoming quest. Having agreed to search out the four missing pieces of an age-old relic, Ty soon discovers how unprepared he is for a mission of this importance. Not only must he find the missing pieces and assemble them, he must survive long enough to figure out how to use them before the White Tower closes in.

Desperate to reach Rhowynn ahead of Chief Inquisitor Sylas, FERRIN pushes his small band of convicts to their limits—his twin sister’s life depends on it. On foot, they fight their way through the harsh winter countryside of Sidara, hoping to find someone willing to help. But the help they find is not what they expect, and the battle that ensues will likely mean the end of them all.

Still struggling with the loss of his memories, AYRION and his companions travel north, eager to find a safe haven in the rugged mountain community of Wellhollow. Instead, they find an army of Black Watch purging the town of wielders. And when a local seer reveals a disturbing prophecy that directly links his fate to hers, Ayrion finds himself donning his black leather coat and twin blades once again.

Meanwhile, in Easthaven, ADARRA makes a shocking discovery. Not only were the Tallosians who attacked her home part of Mangora’s scheme, it seems they are also part of a much larger invasion—an invasion Easthaven isn’t prepared to withstand.

The third book in this award-winning epic fantasy saga continues where the second left off, with a world in desperate need of saving, as powers beyond their control threaten to bring the Five Kingdoms to its knees.

1 Star!

This will be a very unpopular opinion as this book currently has a 4.6+ rating. The Four-Part Key will be the last book I read from Michael Wisehart. This series has really disappointed me. I keep hoping for a faster moving plot, some character growth of any kind, some world building, some explanation of the magic, or just a story where the most important character, Ty, isn't left to fend for himself time and time again.

After 3 books, I am left with no reason to continue....

Supposedly, the 4th book may correct some of the aforementioned issues, but I have finished my journey into this series. Good Luck fellow readers.

I love this series but man do I hate the trope of (spoiler) ‘woman from exotic culture makes herself the hero’s wife without his knowledge or consent’. Extremely frustrating and tired. I’m not sure where the author is taking this but I doubt I will ever like a character who immediately latches onto someone (why?) through deception, assault, and willful ignorance. Gross.

loved it!

I highly recommend this book, as I do the entire series.

It’s fantasy for adult readers, excellent, of a very high standard. I’d rate it as one of the best books & series that I’ve read in this particular genre.

I only wish, so much, that there was more!! Mr Wisehart really takes you on such a journey, as a reader you are highly invested. Emotionally as well as intellectually. Through what can only be described as an Epic adventure, with so many twists and turns, peaks and valleys and unexpected events.

There is such depth to the story. Stories inside stories really.
With strong characters, who you can’t help but root for. Each set on their own individual story arcs, which are all incredibly well written. All faced with overwhelmingly difficult tasks or situations.

It all finally starts to come together, most of these characters meeting and joining forces near the end. There is however so much of this story ( the most important part, that you’ve been waiting for through all the ups & downs ) left unfinished!!

It’s feels a little like Silas ( one of the very bad characters - a twisted inquisitor ) has come back from the dead, to gleefully torture you.

I have loved reading this story Micheal Wisehart and thank you so much for writing it. Please can you finish it, post haste!! It would be great to see any information on your site regarding your progress on the 4th book.

Slow

This is the third book in the Aldoran Chronicles series, and by far the slowest.
Seriously, I struggled with this one. It dragged on a bit, and I was getting tired of all the jumping around between characters. I was really starting to wonder if all these characters will ever actually meet...
The story focuses more on Ty and his journey to find the scattered pieces of a key. He is sent on this quest by an old wizard who is really bad at explaining things. The wizard insists that Ty must do the journey alone, but doesn't say why. Of course... Ty doesn't do it alone....

Slight spoilers: Try travels with his brother. At one point, they meet a desert princess. There are a few nudity scenes, but nothing more untoward than that.
The book is NOT the last in the series! The end isn't quite a cliffhanger, but there is clearly another one coming.

Some adventures were interesting, but for me the best part was at the end when things finally converge a little.
Good luck tackling this one.

Review: This dipped a bit in value because once again, we have another female trope in the form of Adarra The Dumb. See, she is really speshul cause she has freckles and all the dudes want to bang her. She has a handsome lordling she used to crave but now likes a hunky Viking whom wears a human hair cloak. See, there just is a hidden depth of covert longing that lies within those sensitive barbarian eyes. Why heck, she just might blush constantly if not for her stubborn and mulish resistance to all things obvious.

Don’t forget Ty (Kai) as he was born FROM magic but knows jack shjt in how to wield it. This story line gets drawn out way too far to be cogent.

The other characters are moving along at a good clip and continue to be entertaining.

Great first book, continued in the second but, for me, became bogged down in the third instalment.
As a reader of fantasy for many years after building a world the hard job comes in holding interest without losing the casual reader. This book like so many fantasy books these down gets bogged down in too much dialogue and unnecessary, in my opinion, narrative. It takes ideas - yet again - from LOR, Dune, GOT, Wheel of Time etc. I also found some of the dialogue immature and down right silly. It might not be an adult book but boy did it irritate me at times.
Having said that, there is much to admire with a strong main story and a range of interesting characters. I have now read all 3 books back to back and I gather there is now a fourth. Think I’ll wait a while before delving into that one.

This is by far the most captivating book of the series. I can’t wait to read the next book. Bring it on.

I'm actually kind of torn on how I want to rate this book. First of all, I did not realize that it was over 1100 pages when I started it (that is my fault and I take complete responsibility for that). My first hint should have been the fact that the audio book was almost 36 hours long, but when I was looking for the next book to start, I didn't even look at the summary or the details of the book. I remembered that I had liked what I had read of the series so far - both The Aldoran Chronicles and the Aramoor series - so I was interested in continuing onward.

Unfortunately, it had been a pretty long time since I had actually read any of the books in the series (not to mention that there have been hundreds of books read in between) and it actually took me quite a while to remember and understand the actual details of all that was occurring and why. This is a series that has a LOT of characters. And, not only that, but there are several storylines going on at the same time. To me, it was confusing as heck and for that reason, it took me much longer than I would have liked to get back into the story.

Then, part of me began to get anxious with how long the book was and how much longer I had before it was finished. I began watching the time left and pages remaining. To me, that is never a good sign. I have absolutely no problem reading large books. In fact, many in this genre tend to be large books. Yet, I just couldn't seem to settle into any type of rhythm. Just the fact that it took me several days to finish is a sign to me that there was something "missing". By that, I just mean that the magic that occurs when you lose yourself in a book and time begins to fly - that you look up and realize that the book ended and you had no idea how that happened - that was not happening. Why? Well, a couple of things. The pacing was uneven, it seemed sporadic at times, sometimes we are bogged down in the minutia of details that just felt like "filler" and then at other times the action was exciting and non stop. On top of that, the storylines seemed like they were a bit all over the place and I had ABSOLUTELY no earthly idea if and/or how they were all going to mesh together..

There is the storyline of Ty and his quest. There is Aryion and his loss of memories. We have only a couple of chapters with Valtor interspersed at odd times (and THAT I thought was a pretty BIG part of this overall story arc - with the events of the new and crazy King), and then there is Ferrin and his gang as they have escaped the White Tower and are being hunted all over the country by some pretty powerful bad people (The Black Watch, Silas, etc)

But, with all that being said, by the last 25% of the book, things began to gel and the action began to ramp up and things got interesting. That is also about the time that I realized that there was no way that everything was going to be resolved in this book and that there was going to have to be another book following this one. I think my biggest problem with this latest book that even with over 1100 pages, we did not move all of these storylines as far forward as I was hoping for. We did finally get to see two of these storylines overlap at the very end - that was a definite plus and I enjoyed getting to see the results of this occurrence.

Did I enjoy this book? Yes, I did.

I think one of its strengths is the development of the relationships that were got to see and the ties that were formed between the various characters. Mr. Wisehart really did a fantastic job in that department. Ty, Aryian and Ferrin are MC's that you cannot help but like and root for. They each also have a character - and sometimes more than one - that serves as a friend or companion and those relationships grew strong and are only getting stronger. We see Ty's confidence in his magic increase, Ferrin's confidence in his abilities grow and Ayrion...well...no spoilers on that front.

I am looking forward to the next installment in the series as we are left at a time in each of the different storylines that events have occurred (and most unexpectedly) so it leaves the reader eager to find out what is going to happen next.

I alternated between listening to the audio version and reading the print version. I did enjoy the narrator and had no problems with the narration. So... now I guess it is back to waiting on the next book. I just need to remind myself to come back and look at this review before I start Book 4 so that hopefully, it won't take me so long next time to dive back into the story.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through this book so far, and while I genuinely like the characters, the world, the personal struggles, I have a problem with the structure of this book. There are essentially three storylines intertwined in this narrative. The three are completely separate, and they have no idea the other exists. This has been happening since book 1, and while I am still hoping that the plotlines are able to connect by the end, it crushes the pacing of the story. It feels like we reset every time we switch back to a different plotline. Also, the main characters are out to save the world, as they usually are, but I feel no sense of impending doom. There is no urgency in their quests. We know the villains are plotting evil things. We know they have sinister intentions for the land. But the villains are not actively pursuing that goal. They are meandering just as the protagonists are. And since there is no urgency on either side, I find myself without much urgency to keep reading every day. I'll go a few days without reading a word, and then maybe I'll get back to it. I don't have issues with the book's length. I have read long books before. There just isn't any necessity for it to be as long as it is. But, I'm hoping I will be proven wrong about this whole thing by the end.

Update: I’m done, and while it was a satisfying finale, I’m not sure if I’ll finish the series. This book just put a bad taste in my mouth for this series. A lot happened in this book, but when the dust cleared, not a lot ACTUALLY happened. I loved the first book. Loved it! But I don’t know… I’ll have to see how I feel when book four comes out.

Enjoyable book, well written, bog standard fantasy plot (get the magic thingy, make friends along the way, stop the insidious baddies).
My main complaint is with how frustrating the story is. Repeatedly, the laughably overpowered and evil baddies *somehow* get the better of one of the three main characters, seemingly appearing from nowhere and ahead at every turn. I found myself rolling my eyes every time this happened as it seemed to be just for the sake of padding out the plot. It’s a very engaging story in that it causes this frustration because I want nothing more than the 3 main characters and associated side characters to all meet up and overthrow the over-the-top evil group.

Most of the story is around Ty, who I personally find very un-relatable in a pathetic wet piece of paper way. The other two characters (especially Ayrion, following the street rats series) more than make up for this, as do the side characters. The preceding books had set up a much more intriguing narrative of a pervasive, corrupted threat undermining all that is good; which the series could do with returning to rather than this overblown, super-obvious evil.

Let me be honest here. I finished this book under protest. Mr. Wisehart, please, please stop writing this series if the writing is going to be this low effort. Not trying to be mean, but the characters were all over the place, the plot makes you care less about it by the chapter and the actual writing angers me to my core as to how basic and boring it is. You have a cast of characters devoid of any characteristics that don't move the plot forward so they are paper thin. Unless these characters are directly involved in the action, they practically don't exist. The tone of the romantic subplots also don't make sense. You had something with the Lenara subplot (something more adult) but then you ruin it by making all the other romantic entanglements outlandish and silly. Just end the series if you truly don't want to write it anymore, don't subject your fans to reading something like this.

Took time

So good I slowed down so the next book could be released. So ready to keep on this amazing journey. I am enjoying each character development but do not want Th with Nariendi.

"That's what faith is all about. Believing in something even when those around you choose not to. Faith is when you close your eyes and look with your heart."

I admit I approached this third installment with a healthy dose of trepidation. Many other reviews talked about how this was the worst one in the series or that it was obnoxiously slow. I disagree on both counts--and I am so relieved because this is a long book for sure.

Yes, it is a slow book. But I didn't find that to be a bad thing--there wasn't non-stop action but there was a purpose to every scene and I just adored the different storylines and I can't wait for all the heroes to fight against the white tower.

There is so much I want to go into but I really want to keep this review short and sweet cause I could go on about so many different parts of this book--then I'd be here all day. So here is a few non-spoiler bullet points:
a. Ty grew as a character so much in this installment and I can actually say I like him as a character. He has really grown from the obnoxious and whiny boy we met in book one. 10/10 character growth.

b. I have such conflicted feelings about Narendi (hence the 4.75 instead of 5 stars). She is a kickbutt warrior princess but the whole thing with Ty had better not turn into a love triangle. Lyessa and Ty are my whole soul.
c. the romances were on point. So excited for all my ships to sail in the next book (as long as no one dies)

I am seriously in love with this series and have already borrowed the last book! Really hoping the last installment is just as good as the first three!

I have a few problems rating this book, the story is perhaps a bit overblown with to many story lines to juggle for this author. There is also not a lot of story or character progression happening. If it wasn't for the quest plot line of Ty,there wouldn't have been a whole lot of plot progression either. My Problem is Ty as a character is not particularly appealing to me, I enjoyed Ferrin and Ayrion considerably more. Even if there is no reason for Ferrin to be such a skilled fighter.

And now for my real problem apart from to many pov for the author to juggle. Between the previous book and this one i had listened to the whole of the Wheel of time series, which was a first for me. Having that direct comparison, I got the feeling Mr. Wisehart tried to emulate Robert Jordan, something that in my opinion even Mr Jordan only occasionally could pull off, the many interwoven plot lines and plenty of text without movement are a good example of that. Regrettably it also became apparent that Mr. Wisehart heartily included concepts and world elements, pretty much whole sale. If a desert tribe covering their faces with veils before battle, sounds familiar, it did to me as well. Then we have of course the very colorfully clad tinkers with their bright wagons. The Black watch of the white tower in their white cloaks. And the list goes on and on.

Of course it isn't the authors mistake what I chose to consume between his novels, but it annoyed me a bit. Overall I give this 2.5 stars rounded up to 3.

While Tim Gerard Reynolds does a phenomenal job yet again with the audible version (loved his work on the Riyira Chronicles) the writing in itself is. . . well it's a mix of really gokd scenes ripped right out of other popular works then crammed all together without any real driving force behind it. It's as if the writer took major scenes from Hardy Potter, Dune, Star Wars, etc. Then clustered them all together, and aside from the unorigionality of it all, it simply doesn't work. It's overkill.

It's much like if one were to take dishes from all their favorite types of foods (Sushi, Fettuccine, Pistachio ice cream, Cajun baked salmon, Cheeseburgers) while separately, they're amazing, mmm. But mix them together, well, then they're one big pile of ew. That's what this turned out to be. Lots of good ideas with potential if made in a unique or personalized way, but when combined, it's just too much, it's overkill and at parts so blatantly unorigional that it's laughable.

I kept listening hoping it would get better but found myself zoning out because I just didn't care anymore.

It's one thing to steal from the greats, it's another thing to rip them off completely then throw them all into the same bowl. Next time, instead of placing them in the cooking bowl, go straight for the toilet bowl.

Flushed my last audible credit right down the drain with this one. Oh well.

Comfort Food

This series reminds me of a good ‘old fashioned comfort food. You know, it’s not the best thing you’re going to eat but it’s a tried and true recipe that brings back a certain nostalgic “Je ne sais quoi”. A dash of LotR, splash of Arthurian legend, a hint of Sword of Truth, some Game of Thrones, and a sprinkling of Wheel of Time…

It was easy to see the elements especially with some of the names (Mangora vs Morgana) but, it was still a unique story with unique characters. Ferrin and Aryon are easy to love and well built and the author definitely had you empathizing with the characters’ emotions. For example, I imagine I was just as frustrated with Nerandi as Ty was by the end of it.

One thing for me that really stood out though were the Christian elements. I personally love the fact that this author incorporated so much of that in their work and while it was noticeable, it wasn’t overbearing which I think is how that should be. Well done on that point , sir! I am looking forward to the next book and will definitely read it because, like I said, comfort food… maybe a “warm-fuzzy blanket” might be an appropriate description as well.

I think you will enjoy this series and I do recommend you read it.

What I liked
The Aldoran Chronicles is an epic quest fantasy story with three main story threads. Ty is the overall hero of the tale, but he is young and has no clue what he is doing or how to use the powers he has been given. In this final book, he is off on a quest to locate the pieces of a magical key. A common enemy, the white tower, is out to hunt them down and end them before their quest has even started. Ty is a character you want to love and laugh with as things happen to him.
Final Verdict
It would help if you read the series in order or be lost. Also, you might want to listen in small chunks as it can get overwhelming if you lose track of where you are in the story—a classic fantasy at its best.
Audiobook Review
The final book in the Aldoran Chronicles is over 35 hours of enjoyment. I listened to the whole series via audiobook and enjoyed every minute of the adventure. Tim Gerard Reynolds's outstanding narration brings this epic fantasy quest story to life and makes it one of the most enjoyable audio adventures I heard in a long time.

After thirty-five hours of audio, you'd think I'd be ready for some new company, but in this case I have to admit I was sad to see my time with Ty, Arion, and Ferron end. Fortunately, I know there's much more to come. It was great to experience a classic fantasy quest as well as seeing two major POV's collide for the first time. I don't have much else to say besides how impressed I am with Wisehart's continued ability to write such believable, entertaining, and profound works of literature. I must also acknowledge the legendary Tim Gerard Reynolds for his outstanding life-breathing narration, transforming the written word into a most enjoyable listening experience.

Four Part Key

I enjoyed this book more than book one. The glossary I would have liked at beginning since I read this from tablet. I was curious of meaning of a few words and haven't mastered going to end of book for information that you can do with an actual book. The characters were developed personalities were great except Kerren. He just wasn't As smart as he should have been. He should have scouted out and thought about before recruiting his sister. Times I was frustrated because of his stupidity.
I liked at first but he really became unbelievable .

Well written book with enough things going on throughout the book to keep you interested. Love how he keeps you engaged with all the main Characters so that not only do they have enough things going on in lives as a group or individuals but the also remain relevant to the story line.

Some things for which i did notice was there were a few times in which he used both the male and female pronouns a couple of the characters. Other than that I'm looking forward to the next book in the series which I'm hoping it will answer more of my unanswered questions for which I have. But I will have to wait and see.

Not very good

Not very good, not very bad either, but this is basically 3 different stories, with a few random pov's thrown in to make it even more chaotic, would much rather read one story, jumps around between each storyline seemingly randomly, the writing and characters are well done done, none of the stories are bad, but they constantly interrupt each other, the most interesting one has the lowest page count, two of them finally intersect at the very end, but the book would have been much better with less pov's or a single group of characters to follow.

This was like wading through mud, I mistakenly started this series thinking that Book 4 was it but a third of the way into this & it was going nowhere fast & I decided to delve deeper & found the mysterious 5th instalment that apparently isn't even in the writing stage- explained a lot! The author changes slightly in that each MC get's a bit longer, about 5%/chapter, but there are so many of them & none are meeting, that it takes forever to get anywhere! Then add in the supplementary characters, for example Dakaran- who for some reason his story arc is literally get drunk, decide on clothing & raise taxes - Rinse & repeat! Finally after plodding through 90% of the Book, something finally happens but TBH that meagre 10% does not make up for the previous 90% of filler. I'll read Book 4 but it won't be now, after all what's the point as I'd need to wait for 5 anyway!

Evil definitely tried to regain its tentative grasp on Aldor, throwing all it's best fighters, doing all their worst, appearing to out think the good and of course trying to get into everyone's heads to make them believe they were invincible. Gratefully the good guys were truly up to the task and spectacularly turn the tide. Not unbelievably, but truly spectacularly, not with saccharin, but actually out thinking the emotionally unstable crybabies that evil actually is. I could not be more pleased with a story actually. This is a well thought out series!

Better and better!

I love this series! To some it seems like several different stories, but it's not. These are different threads of the same story. We saw two of the threads finally meet in this book, and I can't wait for the last thread to meet them in the next book. My biggest problem is the wait for the next book to be released. I am ready right now!!!

I am really glad I found the first book! Get busy, Michael - many fans are waiting!! 😁

The Aldoran Chronicles

Three stories in one. Ty the overall hero, to young and without a clue in need of support provided by his older brother, but not of his blood. A warrior master of his trade guided by magic, but with no memory of who he is. A master Smith whose magic infused his metal craft. A common enemy the White Tower pretending to be saviour but only looking to enslave.
Wonderful storytelling looking forward to more pieces falling into place.

Not a good look…

Before page 1 the author basically tells the reader to buy and read two other books that he wrote that parallel content in this one. Disgusted! Book three should follow book 2 without condition. How long have we waited for 3 anyway - only to be told that sorry to fully understand this one you have to read outside the series. BS! Mark this one Did Not Start and DNF. Last book purchased or read by Wisehart.

You just can’t stop reading this

Book three of the Aldoran Chronicals does not disappoint. It continues to weave effortlessly the multiple plot strands that Michael is so talented in. Since the first recommendation of the white tower a month ago I seem to have don’t nothing but read. What a brilliant world and an amazing set of challenges. The action continues all the way to the last pages, this should have you hooked

A good read

This book focused more on Ty and his quest than the other characters. I gave 4 stars because I am not a big fan of teenage angst story lines and I feel by now, through Ty's experiences to date, the storyline should portray him as more mature because he had to grow up in a hurry. My favorite characters are still the Smith Ferrin and Guardian Protector Ayrion. Can't wait for them to cross paths along with Kellen, who is Ty's father (adopted).

Good, could use an editor

Continued the story in a satisfying manner. Believe it could have been shorter. Author used same plot devices repeatedly (minor spoilers to follow): a warrior commonly left his weapons behind, then got into fights and wished he had them. A fugitive got caught by his pursuers on several occasions, then escaped again and they gave chase. Etc. it got old. Still gave the book 4 stars though so the good outweighed the bad.

This series is a fun fantasy ride. Nothing too deep or heavy or ponderous or dark. If that's what you're looking for, this is it.

It wanders a bit, but not in an annoying way. I get the feeling the author followed the characters around until they were done. So did I. And it was fun. The old wizard never really made sense (he could have solved SO many things but was never around and we we're never told why), but my enjoyment of the other characters more than made up for it.

I liked it!
