In a world where bigger is often better, a tiny tree realizes that its extra small size can make an extra big difference. This book is a wonderful deployment tool designed to help military children enjoy the Christmas holiday while separated from a loved one overseas. Military families will be inspired to create their own Soldier's Tree which can be sent to their special service member serving abroad. With a poetic storyline and perfectly imperfect illustrations, The Soldier's Tree is sure to be loved by children who wear the stars and stripes of America.
Based on the cover, my expectations were very low. (It looked like she wasn't sure if it should be "Soldier's" or "Soldiers'" and so put the apostrophe *on top* of the S to hedge her bets.) But it was....okay. The rhyme scheme had a meter that could be followed, and the illustrations were obviously hand-drawn, but serviceable. The story was....well, you've got to suspend your disbelief, and then it's okay. (The appearance by Santa was cute, and the idea of the "Heroes' Tree" is a good one, but let's not talk about why shipping a live pine tree to and from wherever the dad was stationed isn't going to work.) My biggest problem came on the next-to-last page: after an entire book with a consistent meter and rhyme, there's a *very* jarring break from it. It's not even an if-you-squint rhyme, it just throws the whole thing out the window.
