After a harrowing escape from Berlin following the Russian invasion, Heinrich Schloss struggles with the risks of going back on the offensive in the war while terrified for the safety of Germany. He constantly balances opportunities to gain advantage over invaders while avoiding those potential defeats which would see the Red Army push through to the Atlantic coast.
Each event is a roll of the dice for Schloss while he meanwhile works to maintain continuity of the government, now in Frankfurt. Other problems facing Germany include potential instability in the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan. He cannot ignore these flash-points, but he cannot allow them to distract from protecting the Reich.
The opportunity to turn the war against Stalin in a major way presents Schloss in his greatest dilemma. The need for action rages against his terror of losing the war.
Overall, this entry moved the story along quite well. I enjoy the inclusion of so many historical figures.
My one issue is the author has the force structures of the German and Soviet armies incorrect. They seem to small compared to what they should be at that time.
I'm a huge fan of alternative history and this series is the genre at it's best. The story is well written and exciting. Book 6 has set up intriguing possibilities for upcoming books. I highly recommend this and this series.
This novel ends with nothing really resolved and leaves me very frustrated. To a small degree my issue with book six is slightly dialed back, but still far exceeds real world physics. I was also very disgusted by the non-resolution of the German/Russian story plot and the complete reversal of realities in the British plot. Oddly the Japanese plot was the one that rang closest to what I would expect to take place under these circumstances and even that was really pushing changes from actually cultural norms as seen historically. Even with the Japanese story line the wrap up of the book leaves the stuation only partly resolved.
This book and series keeps you reading. Because I discovered this series recently, I have more books to read and I do not have to wait a year between them. Actually, I don't know how long it takes the author to write the next one and get it published. The Parallel Nazi events just keep rolling along. It does help I have studied World War II in some detail, so I have some knowledge of the historical characters and time period details. Playing with history this way is fun! This book and series are recommended, just realize it is best to start at the start and not jump in the middle.
"This Throw of the Dice: The Parallel Nazi" is the 7th and most recent installment in this series and I sincerely hope it is not the last. These books are one of the best alternative history series I have read. The author brilliantly weaves authentic history into his alternative history novels with an added science fiction twist. All of his fictional characters interact very believably with the actual historical figures. In many alternative history series the authors carefully avoid any major changes in the narrative or the timeline in order to preserve their characters. Ward Wagher, however, didn't do this in the 7th installment. I hope that doesn't mean the end of the series because where he left it just begs for future installments.
You might get lost in this world, but you won't mind
Mr. Wagner has done very well in his world building, and the 7th entry in the series is as fresh and interesting as the first. This is easily on the level of Harry Turtledove, and that is the finest compliment one can give for Alternate History.
