Whether on a walk a city park, local nature preserve, or national wilderness area, the wonders and healing power of nature are accessible to all. To enhance the experience and foster mindful observation, curiosity, and introspection, poet and nature lover Hannah Fries combines her own reflections and guided mindfulness exercises with a curated selection of inspirational writing from poets, naturalists, artists, scientists, and thinkers throughout the centuries and across cultures, including Japanese haiku masters, nineteenth-century European Romantics, American Transcendentalists, and contemporary environmentalists. Accompanied by beautiful forest photography, and a foreword by Robin Wall Kimmerer, author of Braiding Sweetgrass , Being with Trees is a distinctive gift that invites frequent revisiting for fresh insights and inspiration.
Was a very meditating book, just a good reminder of why we need trees and why wandering in the woods is needed for our health. The book gives you interesting facts about trees. Was also a great reminder not only to look at and take for granted trees but to stop and smell, listen and touch them.
The perfect size to take for a walk in the woods! It was a wonderful read for Fall days among trees! There’s so much in this small book to open your eyes & heart to nature. It is a refuge for the soul in these turbulent times.
A beautiful little collection of poems, prompts, and facts about trees. Less of a literary book, and more of a compilation of art, photos, and meditative guide.
Edited to include the following: I went to go read what I thought was Fries' previous book Forest Bathing Retreat because I enjoyed this one so much and was sorely disappointed to find that it's the same exact book.
I don't mean that hyperbolically. Each page, from the text to the photos, were exactly the same. The only difference is the damn title; her website offers no explanation to why there was a change. FBR was published back only in 2018 so it's not like it had been a while and they wanted to update the content.
It's still 4 stars because I enjoyed it a lot but again, I'm incredibly disappointed to have been duped.
