I’m Brandon Sanderson, and I write stories of the fantastic: fantasy, science fiction, and thrillers.

Defiant, the fourth and final volume of the series that started with Skyward in 2018, comes out in November 2023, capping an already book-filled year that will see the releases of all four Secret Projects: Tress of the Emerald Sea, The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, and Secret Project Four (with its official title reveal coming October 2023). These four books were all initially offered to backers of the #1 Kickstarter campaign of all time.

November 2022 saw the release of The Lost Metal, the seventh volume in the Mistborn saga, and the final volume of the Mistborn Era Two featuring Wax & Wayne. The third era of Mistborn is slated to be written after the first arc of the Stormlight Archive wraps up.

In November 2020 we saw the release of Rhythm of War—the fourth massive book in the New York Times #1 bestselling Stormlight Archive series that began with The Way of Kings—and Dawnshard (book 3.5), a novella set in the same world that bridges the gaps between the main releases. This series is my love letter to the epic fantasy genre, and it’s the type of story I always dreamed epic fantasy could be. The fifth volume, Wind and Truth, is set for release in fall 2024.

Most readers have noticed that my adult fantasy novels are in a connected universe called the Cosmere. This includes The Stormlight Archive, both Mistborn series, Elantris, Warbreaker, and various novellas available on Amazon, including The Emperor’s Soul, which won a Hugo Award in 2013. In November 2016 all of the existing Cosmere short fiction was released in one volume called Arcanum Unbounded. If you’ve read all of my adult fantasy novels and want to see some behind-the-scenes information, that collection is a must-read.

I also have three YA series: The Rithmatist (currently at one book), The Reckoners (a trilogy beginning with Steelheart), and Skyward. For young readers I also have my humorous series Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians, which had its final book, Bastille vs. the Evil Librarians, come out in 2022. Many of my adult readers enjoy all of those books as well, and many of my YA readers enjoy my adult books, usually starting with Mistborn.

Additionally, I have a few other novellas that are more on the thriller/sci-fi side. These include the Legion series, as well as Perfect State and Snapshot. There’s a lot of material to go around!

Good starting places are Mistborn (a.k.a. The Final Empire), Skyward, Steelheart,The Emperor’s Soul, and Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians. If you’re already a fan of big fat fantasies, you can jump right into The Way of Kings.

I was also honored to be able to complete the final three volumes of The Wheel of Time, beginning with The Gathering Storm, using Robert Jordan’s notes.

Sample chapters from all of my books are available at brandonsanderson.com—and check out the rest of my site for chapter-by-chapter annotations, deleted scenes, and more.

Words of Radiance (Parts 1 and 2) – 5⭐
The Way of Kings (Parts 1 and 2) – 4.5 ⭐

Our Stormfather,
Who art in thy Tranquiline Halls,
Hallowed be thy name;
Thy Heralds come,
Thy will be done
On Roshar as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily Fried Cremling;
And forgive us our Stage 5 Clinger Sanderson obsession
As we forgive those who know not his writings;
And lead us not into the Everstorm
But deliver us from Odium.

I, of course, forgot every moment of that ending because the concept of remembrance doesn't exist in my world. But what the fuck? That was so good!

I just don't know how Brandon Sanderson does it. His storytelling abilities? Bonkers.
Me reviewing any part of this story? Pointless.

---------------------

So, my mind is reeling! What the heck was that ending??

Sanderson just hits you with that avalanche ending! I was trying to read so fast at one point that I'm pretty sure I've missed some vital parts. Some plot points were left so open-ended. Frustrating, but it makes me all the more excited to see how they'll be developed in Book Three.

This is the second part of the second instalment in The Stormlight Archive series.

This is an accurate depiction of me trying to accurately describe how incredible this book is:

The first book was packed full of magical information for the reader and the characters to learn. I had assumed that the education in this series was complete but it proved to be only the beginning as even more background and history concerning the spren, the Knights Radiant and a whole host of other entities, as well as how to manage or use them for future purpose, was imparted.

Much of this information was learnt through Shallan, one of the many protagonists that featured here. Shallan was present in the previous instalment yet her role in the overarching story-line remained unknown to me then. She was always an interesting character but here she came into her own, by overcoming the obstacles placed in her way, and became a truly lovable one. Not, however, one devoid of flaws, but this only made her more authentic and relatable.

Kaladin was the other primary protagonist. He was the individual I originally most bonded with, and who now must only take a share of my affections. The responsibilities placed upon him at book one's close were heightened here and his character was far more overwrought and overburdened because of it. I shared new information with Shallan but how to utilise them came largely from Kaladin. This made both perspectives not only highly entertaining but also as key as each other in seeing the plot through to fruition.

I remain as excited as ever to continue on with this epic fantasy adventure and am yet to find a Sanderson book that does not make my jaw drop open in awe of his brilliance.

This had so many good things about it but it was let down by the interludes, (IMO) and the author seems to have an aversion to killing off main characters. If everyone is immortal or can be brought back from the dead, then what's the point of the story?

The author has created a marvellous fantasy world here but there are too many holes in things for me to love it. Travelling seems to be instantaneous; the assassin in white just appears out of nowhere as and when he feels like it and Kaladin does it as well towards the end of this book.

As much as I like Kaladin I was bored when he and Wit had a lengthy exchange about stuff that still didn't make much sense for me even afterwards. As for the exchange between Wit and a certain 'other character' (people who have read the book will know who I'm talking about) at the end; I was left baffled and confused and wondering why I'd bothered with the rest of the book. I don't mind being tricked or deceived but that ending just seemed to be to try to get me to read the next book. I will read it but only when I feel like it.

As you can tell I am pretty underwhelmed by this one, and I have read that some people are bored while reading Oathbringer. Does it get better? Does Sanderson kill people off and leave them dead?

Well, I'm still giving this 3-stars because Sanderson has a great imagination, (so please do read and enjoy this and his other books) but I won't be taking on his other series of books until he finishes this series.

Thanks for reading.

(https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...)

Words Of Radiance - Part 2 is some of the most well crafted fantasy fiction I've ever read. Top marks.

*This will be a spoiler free review of Book 2 of The Stormlight Archive; Words Of Radiance.*

First of all I want to mention that I believe Words Of Radiance works better read as a whole, rather than divided into it's two parts. That, or the divide came just a few chapters too early for me. Everything I felt was missing from Words of Radiance, Part 1 was given to me within the first few chapters of Part 2. I'm not sure if this was intentional or not.

We had some of the best characterisation of the series take part within these pages and we were introduced to a couple of new faces that were a welcome addition to the ensemble (looking at Lift and Wyndle here, as well as a handful more).

The characters arcs were melded together perfectly and interwoven in a way that left me feeling both cheated AND excited at the end of EVERY chapter - torn between wanting to stick with the current POV and looking forward to what our next character was up to.

SO many questions were answered and we had some seriously satisfying revelations! The fight scenes were masterful, Adolin's duels were great to read and seeing Szeth and Kaladin in action is SO much fun.

Shallan's flashbacks, despite being a little predictable, were very engaging and I look upon her in a much more favourable light now, after not being entirely convinced by her character during The Way Of Kings. I think that is partly because of her newly found independence, drive and motivation, but on this I shall say no more so as to avoid spoilers.

Seeing Kaladin through the eyes of Shallan and Adolin was interesting too. Seeing how others, beside Dalinar, Gaz and the lads in Bridge Four, see him made ME view him differently. It was really well done. Although... his incessant hatefulness (despite current affairs) IS getting a tad old.

Wit also has more of an open appearance in the latter half of this book and drops a boat-load of information regarding the wider Cosmere in a rare moment of liberal clarity from Sanderson.
It really draws me in knowing there is SO MUCH more story to be told - so many more books to be read in this universe. It makes me really care and pay attention to every detail, although I am certain that I still overlook references and hidden easter eggs!

The world building is as flawless as ever. We see a lot more of this magnificent world through the eyes of both new and familiar characters. During this part, more than all the others, I found myself checking the map at the front to help with the geographical placements of events, which is great in my opinion. It makes it feel so real.

Anyway, I could rave about the brilliance of this series for ages. If you've read this far, thank you. And if you have yet to read these books... Just do it. Put the other books in your TBR pile aside and give these a try as soon as you can. You won't regret it.

5 stars for Sanderson. I am very much looking forward to both Edgedancer and Oathbringer!
Happy reading folks!

Updated Review - September 28, 2020

Words of Radiance his packed. It’s packed in terms of plot, character development, and world building. There isn’t a single moment in this 1000 plus page book that is filler. Every moment and every revelation is deliberate and serves a greater purpose. This is my first reread of Words of Radiance and what was most noticeable was Sanderson’s decisions he made in terms of plot early on in the novel as well as those he made regarding certain characters. Notably, Kaladin. Kaladin sucks in Words of Radiance. He’s a petulant child for most of the novel, though it is hard to fault him for this behaviour but it’s still annoying.

Like my reread of The Way of Kings, I found a new found appreciation for the interludes and prologue. The insight into The Listeners is priceless and made me realize how excited I am for Eshonai and Venli’s flashbacks in Rhythm of War. I’m also incredibly excited for Dawnshard because I forgot how great Rysn’s interludes actually are. It’s funny how perspectives change.

Shallan continues to be my favourite character. Words of Radiance is very much Shallan’s book and she owns every second of it. Her personal growth is heartbreaking yet exciting.

Again, the Sanderson Avalanche strikes… Hard. There is so much going on at the end that it’s hectic and overwhelming, as it should be. There’s moment in particular that encapsulates the ending and that is

Overall, Words of Radiance is everything. It took me forever to write this pretty short review because Sanderson renders me speechless, even on reread.

_____

Words of Radiance.
Words of Fucking Radiance.
Brandon Sanderson.
Brandon Fucking Sanderson.

The man is a genius. The man can write. The man has an imagination I’d love to be able to saturate myself in everyday all day. My review will never be able to do justice to the majesty that is Words of Radiance, but here goes nothing.

Words of Radiance hits the ground running, but also finds the time and space to keeps certain things moving at a slower pace. One of the reasons I love Sanderson’s writing so much is his ability to write long mundane sequences within a huge epic story. Kaladin’s struggles from The Way of Kings continues in Words of Radiance, but in a completely different perspective. He’s challenged in ways he hasn’t been before leading him to decisions and actions he might not have otherwise made. Shallan’s successes and failings are put to the test as she’s also forced to make decisions and act as she might not have otherwise. Danilar and Adolin continue to make political plays while hoping to convince the other Highprinces of an unknown impending disaster. All of these storylines converge in the best ways possible. The interactions between the various characters are fantastic and had me gushing with delight.

I will say that I did not particularly enjoy the Interludes. I know. How dare I? The problem I have with them is their placement. As soon as the story takes an interesting turn or I’m ultra invested in the characters, the Interludes are the next page. I will reread them, but in terms of my overall enjoyment of the novel they did ruin it slightly. Not enough for me to rate it anything less than five stars since I know how important they are to the overall story and world building, but I love Kaladin and Shallan more.

Overall, I loved Words of Radiance. It has everything I love in Fantasy. Mundane story lines. Mystery. Epic world building. Magic. And a crazy ending making you desperate for the next book. Do yourself a favour and read this series. I promise you will NOT be disappointed.

O...M...G...this blew my mind! This was SO perfectly executed and at no point did I find myself questioning anything - not once! It was perfect. It was magnificent and what epic fantasy should be about. I am speechless. You just go and read the damn book lol, no chance I can give you a proper review sorry. My emotions are not manageable right now...thank you Mr Sanderson! Just one suggestion - can you stop filling the last 200 or 300 pages of your books with proper action every time because I have to put my life on hold as I just cannot stop reading?

“Honor is dead. But I'll see what I can do.”

If I am a drug addict, Sanderson is my drug. This review contains scattered spoilers that I have blocked out.

There is too much in this book/series to review in depth BUT part two got to focus more on the story and plot and not so much on the world building as the previous books since the foundation of the world and magic system has been placed.

Shallan's pov got really interesting and her character is coming together so nicely! Loving the glances and cute thoughts about Kaladin which he returns. I'm glad that her truth came out about Pattern and her Stormlight abilities when it did. I couldn't take much longer of the secret being kept and she literally saved everyones lives!

“How . . .” Dalinar said. “You fell into a chasm!”
“I fell face-first, sir,” Kaladin said, “and fortunately, I’m particularly hard-headed.”

Kaladin. My dear Kaladin. My fav character in the series! He seems more down and overwhelmed in this book. He was aiming for the idea of freedom from Bridge Four and their runs. Now he is working alongside of light-eyed people who he absolutely loathes. His thinking slightly shifts when Shallan and himself were trapped and were forced to work together before dying from a storm. Another huge important moment for Kaladin was his struggle with Syl and his surgebinding becoming known!

“He saw it in her eyes. The anguish, the frustration. The terrible nothing that clawed inside and sought to smother her. She knew. It was there, inside. She had been broken.

Then she smiled. Oh, storms. She smiled anyway.

It was the single most beautiful thing he’d seen in his entire life.”

As usual, the last 200 pages of any Sanderson book was the avalanche we all know and live for. THIS WAS NO EXCEPTION! Lets discuss that last chapter.

Off to read Edgedancer!

Also for those of you who have also read Warbreaker. Can we talk about Szeth's new sword and Zahel?? The Cosmere is making sense now. I am shocked and so mindblown.

Bless Sanderson, this was *good*. "Words of Radiance" as a whole was great, but I'm amazed at how he manages to make the action pick up even more and become MORE exciting on the last hundred pages, up to the point where I almost skipped paragraphs to see what happens next.

"The Stormlight Archive" is so rewarding - and the more Sanderson I read, the more I love his work. I love the way he builds worlds. I love the way he builds action, keeping things tense and exciting *now*, even as he builds towards bigger plots *later*. Well, eerrr, actually I guess he doesn't always do that, but he definitely managed to hit the right balance in "Words of Radiance". The whole thing is over 1000 pages long, but it goes by like a breeze.

Anyway, I'm so excited for more, that I ordered the next book in the series before I was even done with this one. I can't wait for it to arrive.

yesss this conclusion to book #2 in The Stormlight Archive was everything i needed! i got banter between Shallan and Kaladin (their sibling relationship is to die for), adorable romance between Adolin and Shallan, and kickassery from pretty much everyone. don't even get me started on my love for (most of) Bridge 4... i would die for those boys.

Sanderson has, once again, managed to write a stunning epic fantasy book with intricate characters, a mind-blowing plotline and worldbuilding that any reader would be fully impressed with. his writing is superb, and he deserves a medal for making such long books entertaining throughout!

5 Stars!

With half an hour to go, I've actually done it and completed BOTH careers for my OWLS!

O.W.L.S - Career - Auror
Charms - Read a book with a white cover

I am honestly drained from powering through this book, thoughts and feeling to come, but what an ending. To top it off, those last 30 pages... a lot happened and I am SHOOK!

I will stand on my hill and say that those last 50 or so pages are just unbelievably good!
