Lover & Commander

Rate this book
Talon is the elite of his kind, one of the proud, beautiful Kuryeen. So he cannot understand how he ended up under the command of barbarian Earthbreed Liam Grey. Ace fighter pilot Liam is the sort of untamed brute that Kuryeen females pretend to have no interest in—but they always look. Talon finds Liam’s so-called boyish charm childish. Liam is brash, brazen, shameless—qualities not valued by the Kuryeen. To the warrior, pride is everything and Talon would choose death before shame. Talon is afraid of Liam and cannot say why. Friendly, cheerful Liam is no one his wingman should fear. So why does Talon’s guard go up the first moment Liam brushes near him? Talon only knows that his commander presents a threat to him beyond his ability to resist.

I am a madam's granddaughter.

I write homoerotic fiction.

Scarlet Blade is a swashbuckling romance between a dashing Spanish nobleman and a fallen priest in colonial California.

In Chasing Shadows the trail of a killer leads two Chicago police detectives to each other.

Beloved Captor is a sci fi love story between a prisoner of war and his keeper.

Sovereign's Gladiator is a tale of lust, loyalty, betrayal, and love between a sovereign and his bodyguard.

Touch of a Wolf starts in a Philadelphia alley with anonymous sex between a young graduate student and an ageless wolf shifter from Valley Forge.

Force of Law is a Pretty Woman tale, but with a tomcat garage mechanic in the Julia Roberts role.

Shadow of a Wolf takes place in contemporary Washington DC. The men are wolf shifters.

Lover and Commander is science fiction.
The men are space fighter pilots.

In Name of a Wolf I'm back to wolves, but Craiglaren is a sort of highland neverwhere neverwhen.

The stories always involve two men. No threesomes. Always erotica. A strong plot. Always an HEA.

Other than that, I never know where the next road leads.

STOP LOOKING AT ME LIKE THAT I HAVE PERSONAL PROBLEMS OK

description

it's bad.

gay is a thing you can catch, like chicken pox, or a parasitic infestation.

and words like this:

Liam’s hard sex rubbing against his buttocks was driving all higher thoughts from Talon’s head. He felt desire—and fear. Liam was moving as if about to mount him.

“You wouldn’t dare.” Talon said, vibrating with outrage.

“I might.”

“You degrade and abase me!”

He heard his own words, all outrage and no, no, don’t you dare, even as his body was begging for him.

Liam stopped. The space between them as Liam backed away felt cold and empty.

“Why are you stopping?” Talon demanded.

which is legit vile.

naturally, i masturbated almost the entire way through that scene—until even the sex decomposed into horseshite like this:

Talon closed his eyes as the tip of Liam’s tongue drew lines of tender fire across his eyebrows.

fiery-tender eyebrow-licking. IN SPAAAAAAACE.

also:

His lover’s essence spreading over him in heated wetness demanded an answer. Fire welled up through Talon’s own cock. Explosions of bliss tore through him as he released onto his lover’s hot climax. He shuddered in pure joy and fulfillment, burning, transcendent.

which, you know—lawl. jez morrow loves to verb her nouns.

bcuz who wouldn't want to jizz on a climax?

Liam’s erection slid a few strokes within the iron hard channel between Talon’s hard buttocks. Then, slick with wanting, he penetrated his lover’s body.

especially when the alternative is to grind your dick into an iron-hard asschannel whose only lubrication is, um, wanting.

ouch.

I would have given this 5 stars if it was longer and the ending unrushed and less abrupt. However, this is one of the few romances where the chemistry between the H & H is combustible. In this case, it's between Liam, an earthling and Talon, a Kuryeen, who are related to earthlings in some way, apparently, and allies with Earth.

Though this is a sci-fi MM romance, the focus is always on the two men and the sci-fi, futuristic stuff never intrudes. I loved the interaction between the two men and they couldn't be more different. Both are fighter pilots and Liam is cocky, irreverent and irresistible. Talon, on the other hand, is tortured (especially when he realizes he's fallen for Liam!), serious and disgusted with being put under command of someone he despises and considers childish.

Their romance doesn't feel rushed even though it happens early but the sex scenes aren't as explicit as most MM ones. There is only one with penetration and it occurs at the end of the story...but, sigh, the getting there was great.

Lover & Commander is one of those yummy MM stories that made me yearn for more of them. I now have to hunt through my MM TBR pile to find one I think is comparable - and longer, just to have a more substantial ending.

The intensity is not supplied by the sex scenes but by the characters themselves, which is my favorite way. I've been reading too many erotic romances lately where the book is just padded with sex and no character/relationship development.

"Space, the final frontier..."

Heh. No, this is certainly NOT Star Trek, but I just had the movie in the back of my mind while reading it.

I do dislike over the top Alpha figures. But put them in a sci-fi, outer space setting... I find that I don't mind it at all! Surprise, surprise.

The story was nothing complicated. Two alpha-male, one with happy go lucky attitude the other the discipline stiff stern with dignity kind of guy. Contrast coloring, personalities; both gorgeous and best at what they did (of course). Put them in closed conveyance, away from others for gads knew how long... see if they didn't finally eat each other up! In a non-carnivorous way, I mean. HA!!!

Easy reading. Sex on space-ship/craft, whatever. What's not to like!

Bad writing. The whole time I was reading the space fight scene this was in my head: PEW PEW PEW PEW PEW PEW PEW!

Which about sums up the whole story. I'd call it PWP, but I don't think it even qualifies as porn. It's a really condensed, really badly written story about two characters who seem to have absolutely no chemistry together.

The best part of the book was that it re-enacted those shooter games from the 1990s where you navigate a space ship that spewed out fluorescent beams.

Talon and Liam are polar opposites. Talon is stoic, arrogant and cold, sneering at humans because they are beneath him whereas Liam is full of energy, recklessness and boyish-charm, smiling and making friends where ever he goes because he's so likable. Talon doesn't like Liam from the start and it only gets worse when he realizes Liam is his mate.

I really liked this one. The characters were interesting and the world building was fascinating. The descriptions about the differences between Kuryeens and Earthbreed humans kept my attention throughout the whole book and the conflict with Talon's pride and having a mate like Liam and the repercussions of it really interested me.

My only problem with it was how short it was and how much sex there was. I would have liked to have it a bit longer and a bit more explained about where Liam and Talon will go from here but I still really enjoyed this one because it kept me smiling through the book. I'm hoping there will be more about them someday. Definitely recommended.

This was a sweet, sci-fi, paranormal romance and another one of those gay-for-my-mate stories. Oh, and it was also kinda enemies-to-lovers.

For some reason, I found this to be the sweetest line in the whole book:< blockquote> "You're going to have to slime me all over again. "

Liam and Talon are both warriors but from different planet. Both far descendant from Earthian, they share common genes, but not the same customs. Talon is from Kury, a planet whose people are proud and fierce, and always in control; they have a strict code of honor, and they will kill themself to not break it. Kury's warriors are also extremely handsome, lean and lethal, similar to Native American warriors; when they meet their mates, they release pheromones to imprint the female and make her desires the warrior. Female... not male! When Talon realizes that he desires Liam, the only right thing to do is to commit an honorable suicide.

Liam is a friendly and open big man. Jovial and always ready to a joke, he has a perennial smile on his face. He can admit without problem that Talon is an handsome man, only a blind wouldn't notice that, but Liam is a woman's man... or not? When faced with the perspective to lose his new-found fellow fly-fighter, Liam decides to do anything to prevent it... anything!

This is not a long book, less than 90 pages, but it's very funny. Usually a futuristic novel involving planet wars and aliens is strange, interesting, but not funny! Liam and Talon's story reminds me a bit Top Gun... who has not imagined that Iceman would be a better match (in bed of course!) for Maverick, rather than that insignificant woman? And so Liam and Talon play at wargames and in the bedroom with the same strenght and attitude: Talon all honor and duty, stick to tradition and hierarchy, and instead Liam is always ready to rebel and to make a risky move that in the end gain him the victory. So with Talon, Liam will risk and win.

Again a rather light and easy book, surely not a serious "futuristic" novel. Don't search for detailed description of new-worlds, but if you want a quite charming romp between the sheets... well try it.

Re-Read Jan 2010

I got the urge to read this book because of the Anyone Anyone section of the All Romance Wildfire newsletter. A lady had posted in enough details about this book that my memory started going 'ding ding ding' I hunted down the title and emailed All Romance.

Having read this a second time I stand by my rating and my original review. I would have loved just a tinsy bit more story so it didnt seem so abrupt. I realise some author want to stick to a limited wordcount so the book is cheaper but there was words that could have been cut out of the beginning to make the ending more satisfying.

Original Review

Really enjoyed it :) :) :)

short, sexy, primal and HOT!!!

The ending was a little abrupt, it could have benefited with 5-10,000 words more.

Still it was an awesome fun read that was perfect for the mood I am in.

Ok. I try not to be overly harsh on books, and I really do not try to say, "don't buy this". After all, if I don't like a book, there is someone else who will love it.

But this book (I use this term loosely) really is just a novella with looks of angst and sex scenes. What is really disappointing is that it could have had so much potential. I think that's what frustrating about this novel, I wanted so much more and the author.

This one just left me wanting. And while price should not be compared to length, but the price for this compared to how long it was was not porportional.

Now this story, guys, had something in it!:D I mean, well, the behaviour of the main characters towards each other...that was one thing. Another one: I enjoyed hell of a lot of a new culture, traditions, clashing of two different cultures...
The book brings you into brand new world. Everytime this happens I´m just praying for the author to explain all the traditions and customs and rules of the world. And man...so many few of them actually do that (not even when those things matter a big time). Which – shame.
But here, I finally got my answers, explanations and even though there were some things that didn´t quite sit with me in the story I overall really liked it.

The chemistry was definitely missing from this one. I never bought into Liam wanting/loving Talon, even at the end, and honestly, I didn't really get Talon loving Liam either. He decided Liam was his mate just because he happened to brush Talon's arm when he walked by?! It didn't even come across as insta-love because I don't think either character was in love. There was no build up of the two working together and/or becoming friends or any kind of relationship to where I felt they may have had feelings for each other. I think the story was just too short to really convince me of their feelings/chemistry.

Two alpha males: one human, charming and immature, and the other an alien Kury, a warrior, quietly arrogant and honorable. Because of Kuryeen genetics Talon imprints on the human Liam, and male/male partnerships are forbidden on Kury.

We get alien/human relations, space battles, incompetent intelligence officers... it's not an epic tale, but it definitely is a fun one.

Overall this is a super quick (the ending was almost too fast, actually), entertaining read and I really enjoyed it.

Lover & Commander was a HOT little surprise for me. I went into this book not really knowing what it was about and came out of it with a big old smile on my face!

Liam is the the all-American space-fighting, bad boy! He flies by the seat if his pants and says and does whatever he wants. Talon is his exact opposite - he is disciplined and controlled and above all not human.

Thrown together as commander and wingman, this story focuses around a mission that sends these two deep into space and more importantly alone together for several days. It is during this time that something beyond what either man imagines possible happens. Throw in a sexy plot twist and a few tense moments and you've got your self a good time.

I loved how intense their relationship is as it unfolds and I found myself truly engrossed in watching it play out. Would have been perfect if it had just been a little longer!

Lover and Commander or barbarian and savage. Talon and Liam are different in every way two individuals can possibly be different. The only thing they have in common is the ship that they have both been assigned too. The attack ship they live on and protect others with is their only common ground. Liam is charming and flirty. Talon is controlled and methodical. Talon thinks about honor and his peoples customs above all else. Talon is sure Liam doesn’t think, he just does as he pleases.
So you’re given two alpha males. These two alpha males are seemingly hetrosexual until a mating heat rears its unwanted head. At this point things got really rushed. Liam and Talon breezed through the first initial touches of a man to another man. While the sex scenes were hot they also had a forced feel to them. There was a missing chemistry that appeared once Talon and Liam began touching. That is the point where I should really be able to see the chemistry between the lovers in my romances.

I did enjoy this book though there were elements that I struggled with. The sexual encounters were okay until the last one. The last sexual encounter treated the situation as if it were a M/F sexual act. When in reality the catcher would have been severly wounded by the pitcher. You felt like it was taboo touching the butt. You would think that two heterosexual men "crossing-over" would be a little more experiemtnal in charting new territory. It does leave you hanging with an unresolved issue at the end and seemed a bit rushed with no foreshadowing to the issue of being "addicted". The ritual suicide is sprung on you with very little development of the counter human culture.

Loved the "bonding against their will" plot. Wanted more :)
This story is sci-fi and the protagonists are two pilots who need to work as a team to defeat some aliens. Human kind is separated into two: us and Kuryeen, who reminded me of a cross between elves and samurai (very "perfect" both in looks and abilities, with almost no body hair, able to mate for life in a weird chemically explained way and following a very strict code of honor). The pilots are different types of humans and need to cope with their differences.
It ended a bit too quickly, though. I'd have loved to see how the new couple will interact with friends (that were mentioned in the beginning of the book).

How hot and sweet and emotional! I loved it! I mean, a straight guy chooses to be with another man and likes it (and cares about him) so much he comes right back to him at the end. How hot is that? And the reason is hot as hell too. He decided to be his mate to save him, and he obviously loves and cares about him. The only part I didn't enjoy is that a clear 'I love you' isn't said or thought by Liam...strongly implied though, unless I missed the declaration.
This is a favourite anyway. I could easily read this again and again, it was that wonderful in every way. Hawt! I love you, Jez Morrow!

I liked this one for what it was, two alpha, apparently straight men, embroiled in a decision of what to do when nature sends you a taboo curve ball, set against a backdrop of fighting aliens in space. I liked the characters, I liked their interactions and the decisions they made in dealing with the curve ball plot element. I felt it ended at a good point in the story. Sure I'd welcome a second book going into what they did after the end of the first. But my imagination can fill in the blanks.

What started as an intriguing sci-fi quickly turned into a porny PWP. I was so disappointed because the idea was quite interesting. But instead of exploring the differences between humans and the Kuryeen, the author used the setting only as a springboard for the two main characters' humping. Some very interesting plots were touched upon - like Liam's detoxification - but it was all swept under the rug and the ending was so abrupt as if the author suddenly ran out of space. Disappointed.

It starts out great! Develops fabulously, deliciously and then BAM!!! An abrupt ending that left me totally winded. It almost felt as if the author got bored of their own story and just wanted to end it...I'm not trying to be mean but that's how it came off as...The ending was very dissatisfying after the author had worked up a good payload in the form of good character development and plot line but just chopped it short.

I feel like bashing my OH over the head with something hard.
He totally spoilt this story for me, constantly interrupting my reading :(
I'm pretty sure I would have enjoyed this more had I been able to take it in properly.
The story was interesting, with a new concept I'd not read before, and I also enjoyed the characters. I do enjoy an MC who's upbeat, take charge and not so damn brooding.
I think I'll have to read this again sometime.

This book is pretty good for what it is, a short, erotic, gay for you novella. I liked the fantasy premise, and the concept of the imprinting on your mate, although I couldn't figure out at the end whether the author truly wanted the reader to believe that the imprinting is the only reason the two could have wanted each other?

Talon and Liam couldn't be more different if they tried, but the atraction between them is undeniable. Liam is a great guy with a right amount of crazy going for him. Talon on the other hand, is a stoic and disciplined soldier who can't stand what he considers his commander's irresponsible behaviour.

I love them both :)

The plot was good. But the execution was bad. It could have been more longer and in depth. There was no word building, no character building and no chemistry. It was rushed and no scene was complete. Still it had some good final effects and only because of that I've given it 2 stars instead of one. Read this book if you want to satisfy your mild alien fantasy.
