Thousands of years ago my soul had been split by Zeus’ lightening, but it wasn’t until tonight that I felt like I was burning.

This was a beautifully written modern Greek Tragedy, I absolutely love love love loved this!

Thousands of years ago, Zeus split humans in half, creating soulmates: the one person who makes you feel complete, your literal other-half. Finding your soulmate is easy, especially when Aphrodite is involved. At least, it should be easy.
Vanessa has waited her whole life to find her soul mate, but after an apparent error, Vanessa finds herself with not one soulmate but two, leaving her, Alexander, and Theo to question everything; Who is their true soulmate? Can you live without your other-half? Is there such a thing as more than one soulmate?

A kiss was the start of forever, the most important moment in any fairytale, walking the maiden, sealing a promise.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, ‘uh oh, love triangle alert!’, but trust me when I say this is not your typical love triangle.
This book is FULL of twists. Seriously. So. Many. Twists. It had me HOOKED right from the start.

The writing is beautiful, I really enjoyed the characters. I was also impressed with the Classical Greek aspects (and that the GREEK Heracles was correct! It’s the small things lol), and how the mythology was incorporated into a modern tale.

If you love Greek mythology, modern retellings, love triangles, this is perfect for you!

Very torn between three and four starts, but because the first 300 pages were a solid 5 star read, I'm rounding it up to four.

My god, I loved everything about those first couple of hundred pages. The world building was super interesting, and I think the author did such a good job of introducing us inch.to this mythical world, without having any of those obnoxious exposition paragraphs.

I loved all three of our main characters - especially Alexander, that boy exuded such golden retriever energy (this is even mentioned in the book), he had my entire heart. But I also absolutely loved Theo, who had to go through so much but had such good character development throughout the book.

I think my favourite thing about this novel was how all of their relationship(s) developed in the beginning, and how much the characters surprised me - at several instances I was expecting someone to lash out or be super mean to the others, but then that didn't happen, and instead there was lots of good and open communication between them.

Unfortunately, the last third or so of the book ruined it a little bit for me. That good and honest communication I loved reading about? Kinda vanished. I loved that the book was so long, but at the same time, I think it would have benefitted if about 100 pages of Vanessa's "I cannot come between you two, you are better off without me" would have been cut. Like, I understood that that was her initial instinct. To close off and let the other two be happy. But at some point all three of them knew they all cared about each other, and it still didn't click that they could just all be happy together? I was super annoyed by that.

and the ending kind of didn't cut it for me. Like, I loved the little flashbacks, slowly being able to figure out what happened in the past and how this lead to this threeway predicament in the present. but then when all was revealed (during that clusterfuck of a press conference/speaking event of Aphrodite), it just felt... weird? Like I was so sure the book was gonna end in a cliffhanger, and a sequel would be spent on further unravelling that mystery. but then it was so quickly revealed why this threeway soul split happened and I was just left...disappointed? I guess? idk, it just didn't feel like a very satisfying ending.

I'd still absolutely recommend reading this book, because the Vanessa's, Theo's and Alexander's relationship is absolutely everything. I know nothing of the sort is mentioned in the author's note, but I would be so estatic if we got a sequel, or even just a novella of the three of them navigating everyday life and just living their relationship, cause I'd love to see that

The story in general was very well done. I didn't even mind that I recognized some of the tropes used and knew more about the characters before we'd even really been properly introduced. I do think the story grew a little long at times, but the pacing never felt like it was really dragging.

There were however a few things that kept me from giving it five stars. As someone who has worked with deities mentioned in this novel, the portrayal of some of them was very off to me, while others were spot on. The general judgement of the darker gods and goddesses to be beings that are feared or mistrusted is also a tired story that I wish people would stop going back to, although it was refreshing to see that love and light can be just as cruel as all the rest.

The second thing that kept this from being a five was in the beginning I didn't even care about Vanessa. She was our heroine and yet we knew almost nothing about her. I had to push myself to get further into the story so I could gain a connection to her, instead of just waiting to see what would happen with Theo and Alex. I'm not sure if this was intentional by the author, as events that are later revealed in the book do help that make sense, but it still doesn't sit right with me. I didn't love Vanessa and root for her until nearly half way through the novel, and I think I should have been wanting them all to succeed and find happiness from the beginning.

I stumbled across this book on tik tok the other day advertised as a girl with a terrible choice between two potential soulmates given to her by the gods and I instantly had to order it and OMG it did not disappoint! I loved the way the world was built around this modern worlds' connection to the Greek gods and goddesses and loved the elements of dreams and flashbacks that the author incorporated through out. Though I did guess the twist a few chapters before it was revealed, I was so excited about what it was that I didn't even care! The three main characters and their relationships were amazing and I could read about them all day. I can't wait to see what Jenna writes next!

Delightful

I don’t usually reach for the soulmate troupe but this book was a pleasant surprise for me. I think it did the troupe justice and handled the tangle of emotions really well, and the romance was so cute.

OH MY GODS!!! 🏛 If you’re an avid fan of greek mythology and the soulmate trope like me, you can’t miss TPL!!! 🌸🔥
A well built modern day society based in Ancient Greece traditions, where the belief in the gods and all their philosophy never faded/toned down.
From the first moment Theo appeared I WAS IN LOVE!! ☕️🖤 he’s just so my type~ tattoos, coffee, dark aesthetic, art boy, apollo cult...and when you add golden retriever demigod Alexander in the mix...🕊💫 istgs I spent all the time screaming at the arc copy VANESSA YOU’VE TWO HANDS ID DWORD TO BE YOU WITH TWO HOT GUYS SIMPING FOR ME😭😖😻
The characters in general are all so incredibly fresh and relatable, as I mentioned in my tiktok review, the duality of sun/moon of Alexander & Theo (Altheo) is one I adore and can relate to☀️🌙🖤💛
I could talk a lot about why i loved this book sm, I’d probs seem annoying lol You can sense the classics knowledge and TSOA insp✨

Following the MC, it's one that is more of a story of self discovery on Vanessa's part. That self-love is just as important as romantic love. That you can be your own soulmate. That platonic soulmates are just as important.

In spite of nothing particularly spicy occurring until over half way through—which is totally worth the wait! 🥵🔥 The tension build up makes you cling to wanting them to have moments together, to see their dynamic develop and flourish.

One thing I loved was seeing how the bonds Vanessa had with the different guys flourish—and how unique each one is, but also how well the compliment one another.
It's amazing how each of their stories, as a throuple and as their own characters, thrive and strengthen as you read—especially when spanning across the different lifetimes and stories.

The amount of Greek mythology and how it all intertwined into every aspect of the book is phenomenal and made my little geeky heart happy. How the soulmates, both romantic and platonic, are just as important. That the past Greek stories of their lives are playing out to the ones now.

Definitely recommend if you're looking for something with a polyamorous romance, Greek mythology and a whole lotta tension and spicy spice! 🔥

Do you like Greek mythology? Does a saucy love triangle make you giddy? Then The Promise of Lightning is your next read! Sprinkled with factual Greek references, this complicated love story will soften any heart.

When humanity threatened the gods, the ancient gods split their soul in half, making humans look for their soulmate to become whole. Desperate for love, Vanessa asks the gods to show her the way to discovering her soulmate. Everything was working out perfectly, until she is given two soulmates. Torn between making a decision and fear of losing her true soulmate, Vanessa journeys towards discovering the truth behind her predicament.

This book was so much fun. It has amazing polyamorous representation, which is hard to find in fantasy. The representation of consent is dealt with perfectly. The love triangle is difficult and romantic. The use of Greek mythology for such a unique concept was amazing and intriguing! I cannot wait to read more by Jenna!

This book got me through grippy sock jail, it had the prettiest cover out of all the other books in the library. I’m a sucker for Greek Gods mythology, and this book had everything I was interested in down to the love triangle. I’m so glad everyone got a happy ending, and the story really put my idea of love into perspective. None of the doctors were helpful while I was in the psych ward, only Aphrodite, haha!

This was a fantastic fantasy read so filled with mythology that I love so much. It really made me want to read up on the Greek Myths more because I don't know as much as I should and did have to look up a couple of things to get all the jokes and some of the finer workings. Some of the more Ancient History things I did briefly wonder whether they were part of the real Greek myths or just part of this fantasy world.
The whole story idea for this book I absolutely adored. The idea of the soulmate ceremonies for the Gods to reunite you with your soulmate and Vanessa's issue when she accidentally might have two and all the things that then causes was really cool. I loved the cults too, to each of the gods/goddesses that reflected the characteristics of each person. I reckon I'd probably be Cult of Demeter from the bits we saw of some of them within the story (although there are obviously lots more we didn't get to experience).
I loved all three of the MCs, they were all great in different ways. Vanessa and her indecision were very relatable haha, and Alexander and Theo were so different but both so lovable. I did find Vanessa a little selfish at times. I know she was in a difficult situation but I thought she could have been a bit more understanding at some points. Overall I did really like her character though and her whole storyline aside from the romance. There were a couple of little bits that seemed unrealistic (yes, I know this is a fantasy novel but I'm talking in the way people would react to things and interact with each other) but they needed to be done for the sake of the story so although they bothered me a little bit I can kind of forgive them haha! And sometimes they were a bit slow to figure things out that seemed like they should have been more obvious and could have saved themselves a bit of worry. Also some little small continuity things, not story-wise but just like people holding hands but also gripping a chair with both hands kind of thing.
The queer rep throughout, in fact right from the second sentence, was great. Because in a world where your soulmate is predetermined by the literal splitting of your soul, the gender of the body housing that other half of soul is completely irrelevant.
If you love Greek mythology and/or fantasy reads I'd definitely recommend this book. The writing style was really nice too.

Spoilers:

This was a first for me an MMF story. I love the writing it definitely kept me engaged. I enjoyed the first half of the book but in the second half, I was starting to get frustrated with all the characters. One moment things were looking good then the next moment we are taking 3 steps backward. This was done one too many times throughout the book. Too many riddles. I wish we could've gotten some POV base on Theo and Alexander because I would love to know what's going on in their minds too. One thing that draws me into the book is that it is based on Greek gods and references a lot back to them. In irony, I hated the Greek gods in here. I was not thrilled by Aphrodite aka Alexander's mom. I adore Alexander but loathe the mom. Alexander is so forgiving of his mother I don't know how he could do it but bless his heart. I personally wanted him to be a little more resentful. Vanessa learns how to build her confidence and Theo learns to give love another chance. I did get tired toward the end because Vanessa was really indecisive. Yes, she can be very bold during certain moments but loses that momentum and begins to doubt herself. I did not like when it came to the part where they were going to drink the cure, Vanessa said she was not going to drink it anymore like it was as simple as that and here I was like wow you should've done this many chapters ago and everyone could've avoided the constant heartache. Yes, this did get a HEA but I feel like their relationship could've been more developed a lot. In the last part of the book, I feel like all three of their bond just sort of kind of withers away. Hence why I gave it 3 stars. I also have a love-hate relationship with all their platonic soulmates. I liked Ronan in the beginning but as time went on he stop doing much and stop being there for Venessa, especially how much the story implies the importance of platonic soulmates. I probably have more to say but I will stop here. Overall I think it is a good read if you want something that has just the right amount of angst you should read this.

I loved this book! The description of the characters and settings were rich with strong sensory details that made me feel like I was in the story. I fell in love with the characters, each of whom had a a unique sweetness and traits that made me empathize with their actions.

I’ll admit that I knew nothing about Greek mythology before reading this book. However, Weatherwax invites readers into this world of gods and goddesses in an approachable and modern way. Fans of mythology will appreciate the many references in this book, while romance readers will be drawn in by the quippy dialogue, enemies-to-lovers storyline, and queer love story. I highly recommend this as a summer read!

The Greek Myth of this story with the contemporary setting was well done! Loved the characters and the way they interacted with each other--from the uncertainty to the way they got to know each other. The storyline and arcs were enjoyable and I liked the growth of their relationship on a personality level between the 3 characters. My only little hindrance from giving it five stars is how the physical aspects of their relationship felt a bit rushed to me towards the end. The beginning it felt so natural, even a bit awkward which was understandable for most of their experience level.

This book was amazing. I am a writer, and this is was one of those books that inspired me to write more, which always means it's a really good book. I loved the characters (especially Theo... lol). The dynamic was very interesting. I'm not usually a reader of romance novels, so some of the relationship stuff was a little much for me at times, but it didn't make me put the book down! Content warning for rejection-sensitive dysphoric people--it's going to be triggering. But it's worth it. A great romance book!

In a world, set where Greek Gods still rule the universe. Soulmates are appointed to you by the Gods between the ages of 21 and 24. Vanessa has always felt lost, she waited all her life to find her other half, the one who will make her life whole. After her soulmate ceremony goes terribly wrong, she finds her self with two soulmates. Torn between the bonds between them and the choices she has to make.

I really enjoyed this book, like I really, really loved it. The book started off really fast paced and got right into the story which I really enjoyed. The introduction of the world the story is set in and the world-building overall was great. The modernisation of the Greek world was done so well, it wasn't hard to understand. It reminded me a lot of Percy Jackson (but like without being a rip off of Percy Jackson). I loved the chariot Uber services and the Cupids lol.

The main part of the story, the love story, was so entertaining. The story got more complex as it went on but it was done so well and wasn't overdone. Every explanation lined up perfectly and it made the story so satisfying. Like it all actually made sense.

Yes this story is a love triangle but it's not a typical love triangle. I actually ended up loving all three of them so much. Alexander is this soft golden retriever himbo and he was so cute. Theo is a dark, brooding tattooed boy who has all this trauma and you just want him to know he actually deserves happiness. And Vanessa, the main character was my favourite. Her character development and her coming into her own self-worth was the best thing. I was fully hooked in the Greek tragedy all three of them found themselves in.

The story itself was really enjoyable, yes it had obvious tropes, the characters were a little annoying at times but I could overlook that because of much immersed in the story i was.

The only thing I found confusing was the system to do with platonic soulmates, because it just felt like it was a normal soulmate bound but without the sex. The way it was set up felt a little pointless and I wish there was better distinction between the two. I also found Vanessa's own platonic soulmate, Ronan to be the absolute worse after the first couple chapters and his apology at the end of the book didn't redeem him for me.

Overall, this book was great. The way it was written felt very nostalgic to the romance books I used to read when I was younger. If you love Greek mythology, Tragedy backstories, Slow-burn romances, Poly romances and the sunshine and grump tropes, then you should defo read this.

Vanessa can’t wait to be matched with her soulmate. It’s all she’s ever wanted until the date of her soulmate ceremony arrives and something goes wrong because Vanessa ends up with two soulmates: Alexander and Theo. But who is Vanessa meant to be with and who is the other part of her soul?

I really liked the concept of this story and the idea of people being matched with their soulmate. Vanessa lives in a very different world where humans are born with half a soul after Zeus split not only the bodies of humans but also their souls because he feared them. Humans were given an ultimatum by Zeus. If humans worshipped the Greek Gods he would reunite them with the other half of their soul, their soulmate. Vanessa finds herself in a difficult, unique and unusual position when she's matched up with two people. Vanessa, Alexander and Theo cannot understand how they are all linked. There is a lot of tension between the characters to begin with especially between Alexander and Theo who are both vying for Vanessa’s affections. Vanessa finds herself drawn to both Alexander and Theo but is very confused about the whole situation. I loved how Greek mythology was entwined with the story and it worked so well.

The main trope in the storyline is the love triangle between the main characters. They all become close and start to have feelings for each other whilst trying to work out how they are connected and if there is a cure for their situation. But they are mindful of the fact that if a cure is found that one of them could be left alone. I can understand why Vanessa is torn between Alexander and Theo because they are both great matches for her, which makes the situation even more difficult for her. She is drawn and attracted to both. When I read books which include love triangles I always find myself swaying towards one character that the main protagonist should be with but in this case I couldn’t decide. I couldn't predict how the story was going to end and the ending did surprise me but it was one I was happy with.

The story moves between the past and the present. In the present the trio are trying to work out how to move forward with their situation. In the past we are given a glimpse into the characters past lives and what connects them.

If you like books with Greek mythology, love triangles and the why choose trope then this is the book for you.

Romance isn't normally my genre, but I got sucked into reading this book by the very interesting concept of the world in which this romance is set. It's the present day world, if everyone believed in and continued the worship of the Greek gods, and if those Greek gods were an active and undeniable presence in the world. By which I mean an appearing-on-talk-shows kind of presence. A having-stock-in-companies kind of presence. A having-babies-with-mortals-and-sending-the-demigods-to-high-school kind of presence. The author's knowledge of classical Greek mythology shines through on every page of this book, and it makes this extraordinary world she is painting vivid and believable, as everyday characters go about their everyday lives, with some hint of divine influence being part of even the most mundane decisions.
But back to the romance. A girl appeals to Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, to find her soulmate, and winds up with not one but two! The following love triangle is satisfyingly predictable in some ways, but still has a few surprises tucked in there. It's delivered with enough feeling to wring a tear or two from the reader. The ending becomes obvious to the reader way before the protagonist catches on, which makes her slow realisation both frustrating and ultimately very satisfying when it finally clicks for her. The two love interests start off as well-loved clichés (that's not a criticism, clichés become so for a reason) but soon evolve into well rounded, sympathetic characters as we get to know them.
All in all, it's a very entertaining, very emotional, and very easy read. It's a red velvet chocolate cake of a novel, and you should absolutely indulge.

I really enjoyed the book. Though Romance fiction is not my genre, the story-telling power of Jenna Weatherwax is so good, that I found myself waking late at night to finish the book. The story started with some world-building, which was easy to understand. I have read some great books which had the basic flaw of always overcomplicating or over-stretching the world-building part, which makes me either DnF the book or makes it harder to go ahead with the book. But Jenna did an amazing job at creating a world, which was easier to grasp and understand.

The story starts with a bang where the mystery is build-up in the first few pages. I like a good bang-on start and I was definitely not disappointed. The story revolves around 3 main characters: Vanessa, and her 2 soulmates, Alexander and Theo. I enjoyed the conflicting personalities of Alexander and Theo and yet how they complimented Vanessa.

The book got a bit cheesy at times for me (but hey.! I am not a romance reader), but nevertheless, I enjoyed the mysterious and adventurous parts.

The plotline is really solid and I had fun going over Vanessa's past and her present. The involvement of Gods in this whole situation was really intriguing.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and can absolutely recommend this if you like fantasy + mystical + romance.

First of all, I'm sorry cause I don't know any Greek or Mythology stories so it was hard for me to grasp what is what, who, where. I wish I knew what the story was about but no.

Second of all, not gonna lie, I loved the characters from the beginning. It was really a new way of retelling and I'm glad I read it but confused inbetween.

And wow, love triangle plus mates ?? Fuck yes. Alexander was quite adorable, kind, cute and I wish he was my mate. Theo was closed person and wants his privacy and if i were in his shoes, i would do the same. But both of my boys are vulnerable and had tragic past so we couldn't fault them.

Our Female MC is caught between them. All she wanted was a mate who would love and cherish her forever but the gods have another choice in their minds and changed her fate forever.

Would she choose Alex or Theo or BOTH ? When both of them are handsome and sexy in their own ways, would she keep them or leave them?

What would you do if you were her ??

You will love this book if you like:

✅ poly romance
✅ Greek mythology that’s well researched
✅ soulmate trope that includes platonic soulmates
✅ Sunshine and grump
✅ an adorable and earnest himbo
✅ and a wee bit of 🌶

An absolutely beautiful debut that lets you have your cake and eat it too. Vanessa is a loveable and balanced protagonist with a heart much too big, but she’s firm when standing up for what and who she believes in—that includes her love interests and soulmates, the fair-haired loveable Himbo Alexander and the broken-soul Theo. Each character is well-developed and fleshed out, and I couldn’t not root for them and their relationship. I love how the author thoroughly thought out how each personality balances the other, and their characters develop—both on their own and as a thrupple—was beautiful to read.

I really enjoyed this novel. I've always been a fan of Greek mythology and it was my first ever polyamorous romance. It might be my first, but I thought it was well-written. From a reader's perspective, I could even understand why the sex scene was there - aside from the entertainment of the more mature reader 😅 It was a perfect three-chapter summary of Vanessa's, Theo's and Alexander's characters and showcased why they worked so well...well. I can honestly see room for a fanbase of readers who are aspiring writers wanting to create fanfiction from this.

If you love Greek mythology, can stick love triangles like in The Twilight Saga and The Vampure Diaries, and paranormal romance is a genre you read in, I could not recommend The Promise of Lightning highly enough. I tried to find something that might prevent it from getting 5 stars from me but I couldn't.

I adored this book! Everything from the romance to the plot was beautifully written and the way Greek mythology is intertwined with the modern day is so interesting.

I liked the emphasis placed on not needing outside forces for validation and the growth the MC goes through was such a great character arc. This was such an achingly brilliant slow burn in so many respects – both with romance and the gentle build of the plot.

The spice is perfectly balanced with other elements of the story and really added to it rather than just being thrown in. If you’re someone who really knows your classic Greek mythology you’re going to really enjoy this!

Overall, definitely a new favourite and I can’t wait to have a physical copy!
