***Inspired by the short story Blessed Offense (found in Parade) Season One: The Reluctant Ones Volume One: Faultless
Caroline Wallace is a woman who never forgets a wrong, particularly when it is committed by Lynford Townsend, her sister’s fiance’. Is Caro really the heartless woman people believe her to be? Or has she a reason for maintaining her grudges? Perhaps, after all, a little humility and forgiveness are what Caro needs to find the love that has been right in front of her all along.
V.R. Christensen writes classically inspired romantic historical fiction and steampunk dystopian novels of depth and sensitivity. V.R.’s historical romances have been multiple-time bestsellers and have been compared to Jane Austen and Charles Dickens (a literary lovechild, perhaps?) V.R. is half English and resides in the United States, though she spends a majority of her time immersed in late-Victorian classic literature and costume dramas. Her work has been described as “masterful for its genre” and “gorgeous”—“like a river flowing through a beautiful landscape that is sometimes light, sometimes dark and threatening.”
The writing in this book is not bad, but the story was rather tedious. It threw me a bit that it was written in the first person. But what i didn't like the most was that the heroine was so unlikable. She was selfish and bratty. She purposely pushed the hero away even though she loved him. And the hero hero was stiff and had very little personality. I won't be looking for more books by this author.
2.5 The story had possibilities, but I just couldn’t identify with the heroine. She was petulant and selfish, and continually pushed away the man she claimed to love. It got old very quickly. The narrator was fine and the novel was clean which I appreciated.
What a twisted misunderstanding and plain old stubbornness! Neighbors, the three of them habe grown up playmates, but always it was the older two that seemed destined for one another. That is, until she receives a letter from him seeming to assume that they were already a pair. Stubborn and strong willed, she allows those character traits to rule her communications, or in this case, the lack there of, and rather than express her true feelings, she finds fault in every thing he does! Somehow what happens next still comes as a surprise to her but not so much so for her younger sister! You won't want to miss this wildly frustrating, twisted romance that will entertain you as much as you occasionally want to ring the necks of more than one character. Its a fun and fast paced novelty that won't ever leave you bored!
Have to admit books in the 'first person' are my favorite since one can clearly identify with the characters, their feelings, ideals, and motives. This historical story revolves around childhood friends who grow up carrying the past with them, undecided if it will evolve into a future. Caroline and Lyn were the best of friends but worst of enemies as children. However, upon adulthood, Lynford comes to love Caroline who carries her childhood grudges, not ready for the commitment of marriage. Her sister, more flighty and opposite of Caroline in personality woos Lyn into an engagement, despite Lyn's continuing attraction to Caroline despite her stubbornness. In-dept emotional roller coaster as Caroline realizes she is to lose her best friend to her sister. Much inner turmoil until the final unraveling of a surprise ending. Great book for those who enjoy psychoanalysis of characters.

I love first person narratives where we get to see inside heart, mind, and character. Caro has some strange commitment issues and worse communication skills, but a heart that loves and dreams if only she will admit it. I loved the back and forth banter between Caro and her childhood friend, Lynn, her attempts to help her friends, and her outrageous missteps along the way. Great read. Loved it.
Faultless:Less is More . . . by V.R. Christensen is a romantic set in the vaguely Regency/late Georgian past. The Heroine is a strange girl, slow to make up her mind about things and even slower to understand her own feelings about them. She pushes our hero away over and over until at last she pushes him too far. Is she capable of change? Is he able to give her another chance? These are the most important questions in the story, and I fell that she took just a little too long in reaching her epiphany. The pacing was just that little bit too slow that it earned four stars instead of five. But it is well worth reading anyway. I do recommend it. There is no explicit sexual content.
If you want a book where you can feel the characters heartache this is for you. I had to stop and read reviews before continuing as the storyline it introduced did not seem the one I would be interested in reading. The flashbacks are a bit lengthy and I'm not a fan of that writing type so I took it upon myself to skip ahead after getting the gist. If you ever wondered what it would be like to be interested in a shy internalizer this is your guidebook. Too much hurt feelings over not communicating well. Pride and prejudice feel in that way. I liked the characters and the journeys they went on. Its well written just not preference of storyline.
This book was not faultless. I enjoyed the main story in this book; the setting, getting to know the characters, the plot. It was well written and flowed. I did not like the flashbacks, they could have been more concise. They just went on and on and on. The book would have been just as good, better in my opinion, if the flashbacks were just mentioned...not made into entire chapters. Loved the last few chapters. Recommended
I enjoyed thus book late into the night when I should have been asleep. Excellent look at relationships and customs very different than today and emotional complications that are the same. Very enjoyable read written by a skilled writer.
What a mess! I didn't see how a happy ending could come about, but after witty dialog, self-examination and many blunders, the end was worth the wait. Superior writing. I loved the heroine's voice.
The author does an amazing job showing us a flawed but lovable protagonist. There is nothing more frustrating than acting the opposite of our wishes and pride and fear will have us acting the fool every time.
The style of writing can be hard to follow sometimes but I loved the story line and the wonderful characters. I'm definitely going to read the next few books in this series.
The main character is a nice but grumpy young woman. Her sister is jealous and takes not just clothes and jewelry but wants to marry the lifelong love of the MC. There are many other characters in their small town that are complicated and interesting. Story ends well
I was so frustrated with Caro that if it was in real life and I was within striking distance I would have throttled her! The torture she put poor Lynn through was unforgivable! And with all that he still loved her! Well he is quite a man. No man today would subject himself to such abuse over and over and still come back for more. But as they say, "Love will win in the end". A compelling story!
Delightful, as always. I don't enjoy first-person POV as a rule, but this approach *really* helped me get extra frustrated with the main character, Caroline. She suffers from misinformation, some low confidence, and a general sense of not knowing what she wants. If told from any other perspective, I would have lost patience with it. I found myself saying, "She's so bitter." "So resentful," etc., and not liking her so much at times, and it was a delight to watch her to grow in self-awareness. She doesn't just wake up one day and suddenly resolve her mental 'woman vs. herself' conflict, she comes to it gradually, just in time for that revelation and opportunity to fall away from her.
Overall, it's got the makings of a good, clean and easy romance; some intrigue, self-realization, betrayals, and a happily ever after. I've enjoyed this author for years and look forward to her future works.
