Keira is ready for her life to return to normal. Though, to be fair, normal is a tall ask when your ability to see ghosts has landed you the job of groundskeeper in a small town’s cemetery.
When Keira receives an invitation to dinner at Dane Crispin’s crumbling ancestral estate, she knows she can’t refuse. The last living descendant of the Crispin family is reclusive. Keira only met him once…on the night he tried to kill her.
The mansion is steeped in history that is equal parts complicated and bloody. Keira senses the presence of restless spirits the moment she steps through its door. And Dane, waiting for her inside, wants to ask for her help.
Darcy Coates is the USA Today bestselling author of more than a dozen horror and suspense novels.
She lives in the Central Coast of Australia with her family, cat, and a collection of chickens. Her home is surrounded by rolling wilderness on all sides, and she wouldn't have it any other way.
This booked worked very well as a stand-alone book for me! The Twisted Dead had me fully invested in the plot from the very beginning. I found this to be a fast read that was not only entertaining but fun!
Kiera has a unique ability to not only see the dead/ghosts but to talk to them as well. She helps them to move on while working at a local cemetery. Keira, Zoe and Mason (her friends and helpers) get invited to the crumbling Crispin estate. Their host is Dane Crispin needs her help. He has no idea just who much help he really needs. Upon entering Dane's home, Kiera knew instantly that the house was full of restless spirits. Ones that have no intention of leaving.
This was a fun paranormal mystery/horror book. I didn't find it to be scary but found it to be creepy. The ghosts were scary (to me) but some may find them to be spooky. They do set a chilling vibe and the graveyard and haunted house creates atmosphere.
I enjoyed meeting Kiera, Zoe and Mason and although I did not read the first two books in the series, I didn't feel like I was missing too much. Sure, there is backstory and how she met her friends which I would have loved to have known/explored but that just gives me incentive to go back and read the previous books.
I enjoy Darcy Coates books. I find them to be gripping, well written, and hard to put down. For me, this book excelled in being creepy and spooky. It was full of tension and ghostly vibes. I enjoyed Kiera's character and her abilities. This made for an interesting and fun read.
Looking forward to reading more of her books in the future.
3.5 stars rounded up.
Thank you to Poisoned Pen Press and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
Kiera is back in this third installment with her trusty sidekicks, Mason and Zoe as all three of them are invited to the estate of Dane Crispin. They are wary of his invitation as they do not know what to expect from Crispin with him being an eccentric recluse but they soon learn that all he needs is help with spooks in his mansion which only Kiera can provide with hopefully some relief to get the ghosts to move on.
Kiera is not only going to have a fight on her hands with Crispin's ghosts but she has learned more on "who" was hunting her in the beginning of this series and she is slowly remembering "bits and pieces" of her past. Spooks are wrapped up within her past and the men hunting her are tied in within some sort of conspiracy that Kiera along with Mason and Zoe will have to figure out what is going on before danger comes knocking on her door!
That is about all I can give on a backstory as if you want to know more than you need to read this series!
Thoughts:
I really like this series as I become so caught up in the ghostly capers that Kiera finds herself in that I have a hard time putting the book down. There are some chuckles with her friend, Zoe as the quips she comes off the wall with make me laugh.
This series has kind of turned into more of a spooky mystery than spooky horror as the main character, Kiera is really trying to solve paranormal ghosts that are stuck in between worlds.
As always, author, Darcy Coates is able to bring the atmosphere of the hauntings/ghosts more into focus within this story and keeps the mystery of Kiera's past wrapped tight but the author builds up the suspense of the bad men that are still after Kiera. After I hit the 55% mark the story moved faster and I totally went into insomnia fuel once I hit the 68% mark as I could not put the book down with reading the last of the book during the night! Coates kept the story moving lightning quick and I felt there was no way I would be able to sleep till I finished the book! Looking forward to reading the rest of the series when it becomes available. Giving this book four "Shivering Specter"stars!
"Sometimes you end up with ugly bits in your life. Things you’d give anything to go back and erase. But the past is immovable, and your choices are set in stone, and you just have to try to figure out how to live with what’s been done."
The third book of Gravekeeper collection is the BEST!
Keira has a gift, if the word "gift" could be even the right word for someone who can see the dead. She lives in a groundskeeper's cottage near the cemetery and also has a black magic cat, Daisy. :)
What more do we need? Ghosts, Daisy, well let me see, haunted house, vampire spirits, two cool and fellow friends (Zoe and Mason), one unusual friend-Harry, chase and run on a trip road and Twisted Deads!
This time unfinished stories and unanswered questions reveal. Keira figured out about her past and people who have been after her, we get to know more about Mason and why he left medical school, and Zoe, my favorite, "Smart technology is a pretty bow put on top of a corporate spy machine. Do you want the government sending laser beams into your ear to burrow a hole straight through your squishy, malleable brain? Huh?"
Darcy Coates is one of my favorites and I really enjoyed Gravekeeper series, as there is more mission to complete, I eagerly waiting for the next book.
Huge thanks to Poisoned Pen Press via NetGalley for giving me a chance of reading The Twisted Dead (Gravekeeper #3) by Darcy Coates, I have given my honest review. Pub Date 7 Feb 2023
This has been such a superb series! The Twisted Dead is definitely my favorite so far. These books are genuinely spooky and hilarious at the same time. Darcy Coates does an amazing job at making it all seem believable. I loved learning more about Keira's backstory and getting a closer look at the people chasing her. The side characters are pure gold! Zoe is an absolute delight, and I have a soft spot for Harry. It was wonderful getting to know Dane Crispin in this book and learning why Mason left medical school. The banter between all of them is really great! I truly enjoyed every ghost filled minute of this book and can't wait for the next one.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Keira is back and ready to eff up some ghosts! The Twisted Dead is the third book in the Gatekeeper series and probably my favorite so far. You need ghosts? Got that. Need the slowest burning romance in all of space and time? Definitely there. The best part? The inability to put this book anywhere close to down. All three Gravekeeper books have been the same in that you can’t stop reading. Granted, the beginning parts in the first novel I wasn’t sure about, but that was a minor issue in the grand scheme of things.
The thing I love most about reading a Darcy Coates book is that they are typically more cozy mystery/horror. Sometimes you need a break from all the heavy everywhere, and Coates provides this through her writing. The book forgoes a lot of the romance, too. I kind of find it refreshing that a main female character isn’t just a love interest, but more her own entity.
It’s four stars from me. I’ll be waiting (semi) patiently to catch up with Keira, Zoe, and Mason on their wacky ghost quest.
The Twisted Dead is releasing on February 7th, 2023. Huge thanks to Poisoned Pen Press, Edelweiss+, and Darcy Coates for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
When Darcy Coates puts out a book, you drop what you are doing and you read that book, that simple.
I have been a huge fan of Darcy Coates since I picked up The Haunting of Ashburn House, since then I have read 18 of her books in the past year and I am YET to be disappointed even once. Now, The Twisted Dead is a part of The Gravekeeper series. The Whispering Dead and Ravenous Dead are also a part of this series. The Twisted Dead, can be read as a standalone although I would highly recommend you read the first two books as they serve great foundation and history on Keira and her abilities.
We follow along with our main character, Keira and her ability to see ghosts. Coates books are not your typical ghost stories and are actually quite thrilling and jam packed with suspense. These ghosts are not for the faint of heart and will leave you thinking about what you are reading long after you conclude.
I feel as though what is most special about Coates books is her ability to surprise you and keep you on your toes throughout the entire novel. So instead of going into too much detail about the actual plot I will highly recommend you read The Twisted Dead if you are a fan of thrillers, horror, and suspense!
In the third book in The Grave Keeper series Keira is back. I read the first book in the series and enjoyed it. I didn’t read the second but you don’t necessarily have to read all three to understand what’s going on. In this installment you get more ghosts, a creepy haunted house, and plenty of trouble!
Keira lives in a groundskeeper cottage in a cemetery. That’s creepy enough but Keira also has a gift. She can see the dead. She’s about to put this gift to use when she accepts an invitation to Dane Crispin’s dilapidated estate. He wants her to rid him and the estate of its ghostly inhabitants.
The Twisted Dead is available now.
Thank you netgalley and poisoned pen press for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
Keira not only sees dead people, but she also talks to them. She much prefers their company to that of Dane Crispin...and who wouldn't?? Dane is the sole heir of the Crispin estate, and Keira is fully convinced that he has invited her and her friends, Zoe and Mason, for dinner at his ancestral home in Blighty, which was founded by his ancestor, Mortimer Crispin. She believes it was so that he can kill them all. Now I ask you...WHY WOULD YOU GO??? Dane has quite a different agenda in mind...he needs her help. The man has been driven to the point of madness by the vibes he picks up every day, he asks plaintively, “Are there restless spirits in my home?” DUH! Keira is well equipped to take on the job of evicting the ghosts from his house, but she soon realizes that the spirits are not attached to Dane’s house but to Dane himself. How is Dane and his ghostly companions connected to the recent murder of Keira's friend Mason’s, fellow medical student Evan Radeck? Evan was stabbed 18 times last year by someone who thought he was just "too dang successful"! Keira, had hoped to solve Dane’s problems by as she put it...“fishing him out of a pot of ghost soup and letting him drain,” but it seems that someone or something has blocked Keira's abilities. She is alarmed to discover that she “can’t see a single normal ghost. Only their shades. As the evidence mounts that she’s dealing with something a lot more sinister, or at least much bigger and nastier than just the haunting of one unhappy man. If you enjoy horror that is not too extreme, the paranormal, suspense, and mystery...you'll enjoy this entire series.
And here I was thinking that Darcy's Black Winter series was my favorite...but after finishing the third book in the Gravekeepers series I'm wondering if that is still true. This was such a fantastic continuation of the series and, similar to the Ravenous Dead, I loved getting to know our three main characters even more-which is something I don't say often as I normally prefer more plot focused books. Keira, Mason and Zoe are some of my all-time favorite characters and I genuinely wish I could be part of their friend group.
This book was similar to the first two in the series as it had very creepy graveyard vibes that were horrifying but felt like the very best kind, and different from them in the storylines that were explored. We find out the reason Mason left medical school, why Dane Crispin really locks himself away in his house, and discover more about Keira's mysterious past.
I loved this book and cannot wait for the next installment. Queen Darcy continues her reign!
I loved it so much. I have been reading this series since the first book. This series is in my opinion, Coates' best work so far. I can't wait for the next book. Zoey is by far my favorite character and I desperately need a best friend just like her.
Edit 5/5/24 Just finished my reread of this book and I have to mention that I have started to just adore Harry as well. He is so funny in a WTF? sort of way. This book had me laughing out loud multiple times during the book.
I realized as I finished this book how incredibly happy I am that I still have quite a few Darcy Coates books left to read! I love her unique writing, her immersive storytelling, her wonderfully rich yet flawed characters, and her ability to take hold of me until I turn the last page of her novels. And this series is positively one of my favorites!
Our protagonists, Keira, Mason, and Zoe are so well developed and you love them more after every book. Their friendship is endearing and as a reader, you become incredibly protective of them as their stories unfold a little more in each book of the series. Edge of your seat suspense abounds as more of Keira’s mysterious past comes to light, prompted by a dangerous life-or-death pursuit by her enemies. Who are they? And why is Keira such a threat to them that they are willing to go to such lengths to catch her—or worse? These are questions that have been circling since the story began, and in this book, we finally come closer to getting some much needed answers.
I must admit, I loved finally learning more about our enigmatic Victorian-era lady, a ghost who befriended Keira in the series previously. A scene in this book involving our Victorian ghost was one of the most touching I’ve read. A truly feel-good-moment, both heartbreaking and uplifting all at once.
I cannot wait until Book 4, literally and figuratively!! And if the first three books are any indication, the fourth book in this hauntingly endearing series will be the best yet!
For those of my Goodreads friends (and future friends) who have not read a Darcy Coates book yet, please change that and make reading one of her books part of your Goodreads Challenge! You won’t regret it! And there are so many fantastic titles to choose from, the fun is in picking which to read first!
I read this months ago, but apparently never reviewed.
It was good. That was about all I remember.
This series is a good way to spend some hours. It's not the best Darcy Coates has ever written, but I'm still enjoying it and I will read as many books as she's willing to write.
I'm so happy I finally got to this one! This series is so fun and relaxing to read! I truly perfect cozy horror! I enjoyed this latest installment of the Gravekeeper series! My favorite character is Zooey! She is hilarious! I'm so excited for the next one!
Kiera is mulling over the revelation she had in book two about local bully, Gavin. Then, Dane Crispin requests her help with a ghost problem. When Kiera gets a sense of the size of the infestation, she is determined to help Dane, especially once she realizes what is at the root of his misanthropic behaviour.
Kiera works with one of the ghosts in her graveyard to find a way to deal with the nasty ghosts in Crispin manor, but though she has a sense of what is needed, can't provide Dane with any relief.
Meanwhile, Mason finally divulges what sent him away from medical school, and of course Zoe immediately says they must return to the school to deal with the situation there.
And things wouldn't be complete without Artec making an appearance and sending the trio on the run after Kiera discovers some of what Artec is up to and why they want to eliminate her.
So, lots going on in this installment! There is no shortage of danger, malevolent ghosts and people threatening Kiera's tiny bit of safety in Blighty. We get some more funny Harry moments, which are always welcome. And the best part of this series, the friendship amongst Kiera, Zoe and Mason, is on display through -a tense dinner with Dane, and -a road trip arguing about what tunes to play and which snacks to eat. But more critically, -helping Mason's deal with his shame about why he left school abruptly, and -evading the clutches of the persistent and well-armed Artec security force.
Between Mason's straight guy persona and willingness to patch up injuries, Zoe's conspiracy theorizing and ebullience, Kiera has two people who believe in her and stick by her, no matter how scared they all are. Then there's dear Daisy, also making sure Kiera is well.
I like Darcy Coates' mix of horror and humour in this series, and looking at how this book ended, I am looking forward to more ghost action and deepening friendship in what I hope is a book four coming.
Thank you to Netgalley and to Poisoned Pen Press for this ARC in exchange for my review.
How much do I love Darcy Coates. What a fun read. Book #3 of the gravekeeper series I admit this was the first one I’ve read of this series, but it was easy to assimilate and learn the characters. Kira is a likable character that likes to do some damage to the ghosts she can see. Her crew is awesome and I cannot wait to go back and read the first two. I will follow you anywhere DCoates.
Ok, I will be honest in that I did not realize that this was book 3 in the series, but the details in the beginning kind of explain some of what happened before so I wasn't too terribly lost.
Just slight spoilers ahead
So in here we have Keira who can apparently see ghosts. Which is cool. She is living in a tent at the beginning because someone burned down the cottage she was living in. One morning she receives a message from the rich recluse of the town that shot at her in a previous story but she and her friends are relatively sure that he didn't know who she was when shooting. Thus starts the main story of the book as she ends up finding out that it has to do with ghosts and she has the power to send them on.
I really liked this and the spookiness of the story, the ghost and Dane at the end kind of broke my heart.
I will be reading the first two books so I can catch up on how we ended up here.
These books are seriously SO GOOD. Each one is better and better. I binged this in one sitting and there's definitely a cliffhanger for the next book. I still think this would be an amazing tv series. The cast of characters are probably my favorite in a book series lately. I cackled. I rooted for them. I was invested in the story. Gimme all the fun ghost stories with a little bit of adventure - I'll eat it right up.
This is the third installment in The Gravekeepers series by Darcy Coates. While you don’t have to necessarily read the first or second book to read this one (as it could be a stand alone,) feel like to better understand where Keiara has been and truly what she is, the backstory would make this one more fulfilling- though again, it can be read as a stand alone.
There are plenty of new adventures and creepy haunted mansions and graveyards for Keiara, Zoe, and Marcus to get into in this installments, as well as daring escapes and mad scrambles running for their lives.
This is such a well written novel, but about everything Darcy Coates does is an amazing gem. Highly recommend for lovers of horror, ghost stories, thrills, chills and narrow, breath taking escapes.
This is one you should not pass up on release day Feb 3, 2023.
Thank you so much to #NetGalley, the publishers and author for extending me an ARC for my honest opinion.
***As an aside … both of the first two novels in the series are free to borrow with your Kindle Unlimited membership… so you have time to knock those out if you want before release day!! ***
I totally didn’t realize this book was the third in a series when I requested it but it didn’t take away from my enjoyment! This is such a perfect series to get into this spooky season.
Kiera is able to see and somewhat communicate with ghosts, at the beginning of this book she’s invited over to Dane Crispin’s large mansion for dinner. She brings along two friends (Zoe and Mason) and they think something nefarious is going on but it’s not exactly what the think.
This sets the friends off on a ghostly adventure of energy transfers and a trip back to the college that Mason dropped out of for another eerie reason.
This book was a fun, paranormal adventure full of friendship and I quite enjoyed it and can’t wait to read the previous two books in the series!
4 stars!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you to NetGalley and Black Owl Books for the E-ARC in exchange for an honest review!
This is one of the most unusual books I've ever read. I loved it! If you like books that are different, then you will love this one. It's the 3rd in the gravekeeper series, but you don't have to read the first 2. I was able to get enough back story to know what generally happened in the first 2 books. It's centered around Keira and her 2 friends Zoe and Mason. Keira can see the dead and she tries to help them move on. I love all three main characters in the book, but my favorite is Zoe. She's funny and different. I'm not sure if I should thank Darcy Coates or be irritated, because now I have to keep an eye out for the next book in the series. My list of tbr is long enough. I can't wait for the next book.
I came across Twisted Dead on Netgalley and noticing that it's by Darcy Coates I had to request it. (I only recently read my first book by her called Gallows Hill and really enjoyed it so I knew I had to read more of her books. Shortly after that I realized that Twisted Dead was actually a 3rd book in the gravekeeper series so naturally I ran to amazon and downloaded the previous two books to my kindle, The Whispering Dead and The Ravenous Dead to catch up. I really liked all 3 books, 4 star rating across the board for the series.
Lets talk about The Twisted Dead. Keira and her friends are still trying to find the truth about her past while still doing some ghost banishing. I would call this a cozy fast paced horror mystery (very light on the horror.) I really love the over the top characters like Zoe and Harry, I think Harry has become my favourite now and I really hope to see even more of him in the future books. Overall, it's just a really fun and easy to read book that I could not put down. I'm so ready for book # 4.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Poisoned Pen Press, and Darcy Coates for sharing the digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my authentic review.
The Twisted Dead (Gravekeeper #3) By: Darcy Coates
eARC & Book Review Pub Date: February 7, 2023
In the 3rd installment in the Gravekeeper series, Keira is back and having to put her *gift* to work once again!
After receiving an invitation to dinner at Dane Crispin’s crumbling estate, she is tasked with a new job: helping Dane free himself of the ghosts that live throughout the estate. Not to mention, his mansion is full of eerie history and restless spirits.
Once again, Darcy Coates has sucked me in and written a book that I just can’t put down! His books are equal parts cozy and creepy, jam packed full of ghosts and her awesome friends — Zoe and Mason. I love how her books are almost “lighter” than your typical horror/mystery, but still full of excitement. I also love how there’s clearly some slow-burn romance happening between Keira and Mason, but it doesn’t take over the plot at all! She’s still clearly the main character and it is just a subplot
I am looking forward to the next installment in this series!
Thank you NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for this eARC in exchange for my honest review!
Keira is back in this third instalment of Gravekeeper. I really liked the fact that this book just started and took off right away. The characters are so unique and I absolutely adore Zoe and Mason. Harry was a nice little addition to the team this time around.
I loved the haunted house thrills and how the ghosts came across in this one, really twisty. Still a bit on the YA side my adult side would have loved a bit more creepy and scary segments. Darcy's writing style makes it easy to love this book and look forward to the next instalment.
Thanks you Netgalley and Poisoned Pen Press for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
