On the eve of her betrothal to a nobleman she’s never met, Rhiannon seeks comfort on the shores of the sea she loves so well. But instead of offering peace to her uneasy heart, the ocean heralds doom with the arrival of dreaded Viking ships. A vicious raid leads to the death of her beloved father and leaves Rhiannon’s life in tatters. Heartbroken, she travels to Ynys Môn, where she takes up residence at the royal court of Owain Gwynedd.
Leif loves voyaging on the open water. As the son of a Viking chief, he’s accustomed to his people’s practice of plundering and looting. But when one of his companions ruthlessly kills an old man in front of the man’s beautiful daughter, Leif is haunted by the memory. Desperate to find forgiveness for the atrocity he allowed to occur, he’s offered a chance at redemption through the kindly teachings of an Irish priest and the unexpected arrival of a royal fugitive. Suddenly thrust into the midst of the Cymry’s political turmoil, Leif is reunited with the dead man’s daughter―Rhiannon. Forced to work side by side to uncover the truth behind the turmoil, they come to discover that love can grow from even the most tragic of beginnings. But with such incompatible backgrounds, surely a future together can never be theirs.
Sian Ann Bessey was born in Cambridge, England, but grew up on the island of Anglesey off the coast of North Wales. She left her homeland to attend university in the U.S., where she earned a bachelor's degree in communications with a minor in English. She began her writing career as a student, publishing several magazine articles while still in college. Since then she has published historical romance and romantic suspense novels, along with a variety of children's books. She is a USA Today best selling author and a Whitney Award finalist. Although Sian doesn't have the opportunity to speak Welsh very often anymore, she can still wrap her tongue around, "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch." She loves to travel and experience other cultures, but when she's home, her favorite activities are spending time with her family, cooking, and reading.
Absolutely stunning! I am having a hard time trying to find the words to describe just how much I enjoyed this book. The thesaurus is no help because it just keeps telling me words like fantastic, amazing, and phenomenal but I feel like they just don't quite do it justice.
Sian Bessey is a master storyteller! She weaves a spellbinding tale that immediately transports you to the coast of Wales in the year 1141.
Rihannon, the niece of a Welsh king, has every reason to hate the Vikings but has to work with the Viking chief's son Leif to uncover the secrets behind a treacherous plot. The hardest part for them both, however, may be ignoring the growing attraction between them knowing that they can never be together.
The vivid details. The rich history. The compelling characters. The suspenseful plot. The enchanting romance. The unique setting.
This book has them all in abundance and weaved together in a perfect blend that will make the pages practically turn themselves.
This is a story about love and forgiveness, about seeing someone for who they are rather than what the world has told you about them.
If you enjoy historical fiction, forbidden romance, suspense, the ocean, Vikings, royalty, Welch history, inspiring friendships, or even just a well-written piece of literature, then this book is for you.
Highly, highly recommend! It's times like this that I wish there was an option to give more than 5 stars because this book certainly deserves them all. This is a favorite I will re-read for years to come.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but a positive review was not required.
This is the first book I've read by this author and i loved it. I finished the story in just a few hours. It was beautiful, a historical romance.
The details of the Vikings and Christian aspects were extraordinary. I was immersed in this story from the beginning. Rhiannon and Leif have a connection that is undeniable. There isn't just romance, there's a bit of mystery over a murder and a cup full of grief.
Who is ready to head back in time to the 1100's and read about Vikings? I can't begin to tell you how excited I was to read this book once Sian Ann Bessey announced that she was doing research about vikings! The anticipation kept building as she'd share teasers and such. Then I finally was able to read it. Let me tell you, I was hooked! I loved it! I felt like I was right there on the sea or seashore with Leif and Rhiannon. The emotions and fear and desires and uncertainties were all very palpable coming through the author's writing. I wanted to devour all of it right away but life was a little busy while I was reading so I spent a lot of time staring (and thinking) longingly at this book! It just released today as well as the audio on a platform where I have a subscription and I can't wait to go listen to it here really soon!
The author's note at the end of the book was really neat to read and discover that the story is based on historical figures and events. There are of course some liberties taken to turn it into a story. Make sure you read the notes at the end though. I found it all very fascinating.
Leif and Rhiannon have a pretty big obstacle that stands in their way but as they start to come to know each other more, they both experience a strong pull towards the other. I loved seeing their coming to better understand each other's cultures and beliefs and finding their own beliefs and strengths throughout their story.
And yes, there is definitely some suspense throughout the book that will have you guessing and sleuthing right along these characters. I loved reading about their adventures and searching and the sweet pull Leif and Rhiannon feel towards each other!
The themes of family and forgiveness and healing were very well written in this book. And were all part of what had me turning the pages quickly and wanting to know that all comes right in the end.
Definitely a must read!!! And has left me wanting more viking stories from this very talented author!
Content: Clean. There are a few skirmishes throughout the book with sword fighting and battles. A couple of the characters die or are hurt. But nothing overly graphic. The love story is sweet and clean, nothing more than a couple sweet kisses.
I received a copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
I was so drawn to this story! I loved how the characters grew and how the plot unfolded. It felt gentle but exciting at the same time. This historical romance is based on real events which made it even more interesting to me. A real Viking story!
Leif has such a good heart. I loved how he sought to learn more about the things he didn't understand. His curiosity led him to change his heart and then his actions. He worked hard to right wrongs, ease burdens and discover truth. He adored Rhiannon and it showed.
Rhiannon is the sweetest. I admired her courage and how she never lashed out in pain or anger. She was a character who was easy to love and root for. Her love of the sea was my favorite.
I loved every minute of this story. The ending really ramped up in intensity and I was fully invested, reading WAY too fast. So, so good.
Content: peril, violence, death. Kissing. Some Christian elements.

When I heard this book was about Vikings, I was intrigued. It was even better than I imagined! Based on a true story, Sian Ann Bessey weaves a riveting tale of mystery, romance, forgiveness, and redemption. From the first, the story captured my imagination and I found it hard to put down. The attention to historical detail really made this story and time period come alive.
Rhiannon is an intelligent, thoughtful woman who loves the sea and finds solace and comfort from it. When a dinner welcoming a potential husband is disrupted by a brutal Viking attack, her world is turned upside down. Literally orphaned, she goes to live with Owain Gwynedd, the King of Cymry now known as modern Wales. When her cousin’s betrothed is brutally murdered, Rhiannon must decide if she is willing to trust her enemy to find the truth.
Leif, son of a Viking ruler is expected to take part in the raids bringing supplies and wealth home. In the last raid though, he can’t forget the beautiful woman whose world was shattered by their actions. Her parting words seared his soul. Leif seeks out the local Christian priest to better understand their meaning. Profoundly affected by this notion of redemption and forgiveness, Leif stops participating in raids and takes up a new profession as a silver smith.
When the brother of the Cymry King arrives on their shores pleading innocence in the murder of his niece’s betrothed, Leif offers to travel to Cymry and investigate, since he speaks Gaelic. When he sees Rhiannon again, he’s determined to seek her forgiveness and return what rightfully belongs to her. As the two form an unlikely friendship, they work to find the truth behind the murder.
I loved this story! The romance between seeming enemies was beautifully done. I loved how Rhiannon’s heart is softened by Leif’s sincerity. The mystery was compelling and I loved the way the clues were revealed throughout. The suspenseful ending leading up to a dramatic conclusion had me quickly turning the pages.
I loved visiting this time period and hope that the author continues writing books in this world. Highly recommend this book to historical fiction and romance readers. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review. 4 1/2 stars raised to 5.
The Call of the Sea is my first full length story of Bessey’s that I’ve read, and I can definitely say that I’m a fan now! This romantic Viking historical begins with tragedy and war and ends with hope and peace. The romance is a bit on the lighter side, but also tender and appropriate to the historical context – honor and reputation were everything. Rhiannon is an empathetic main character, and I admired her quiet strength. Leif is a terrific male lead – I may have enjoyed his parts a bit more. His camaraderie with his best friend had me smiling through their scenese. Though Rhiannon and Leif don’t share the stage until much later on, their scenes are poignant reminders of what they’ve lost, but can also hope to gain. After a lot of sacrifice for both Rhiannon and Leif, there is a victorious happy ever after.
The plot is a bit of a mystery, but not really a whodunit for this reader. I pegged that from the beginning, but watching it all come to fruition as the characters figure things out is oh-so satisfying. I adored the cultural details, including the correct usage of the language at the time, without being inundated with too much information and backstory. The rich history of Wales, Vikings of Ireland, and how they interacted with each other at the time is quite fascinating. I appreciated that while the story is realistic to the times, and there are scenes of violence, none of it feels gratuitous or overly descriptive.
I’ve only read one or two other authors who write stories of Vikings, and some are just too violent for my taste, so I’m always eager to find one that writes a clean and engaging story. I have a few of Bessey’s novels already on my Kindle, and I’m now even more eager to give them a read. Fans of historical romance – especially Viking stories – should pick up a copy of The Call of the Sea!
I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher; a review was not required, and these are my honest thoughts and opinions.
This is a beautiful book. I loved the history and the Gaelic names. I took the time to watch the YouTube video the author made to help with pronunciation. It really helped me enjoy the story more when I knew how to say the names in my head.
“I have always loved the sea,” Leif admitted. “But as of late, I have wondered if there might be something more—something else for me.”
I was instantly struck by how courageous and brave Leif was. His strength and growth was enjoyable to read. He was my favorite character and I looked forward to him being on the page. Rhiannon was so brave. Rhiannon has pain of loss and heartbreak but she is strong. She was also a joy to read. The author does a wonderful job of pulling you into the story. There are many exciting and page turning moments. I haven’t read many Viking books. But I felt Sian Ann Bessey did an amazing job with the story and characters.
This is an era that I haven't read much of in fiction, and I was completely immersed in the setting and culture of the Welsh and the Vikings. The storytelling is rich in historic details that bring the book to life. Rhiannon is strong character who has much heartache weighing on her. I didn't see at first how on earth she and Leif, with so much between them, would be able to come together. I loved his redemption journey and his genuine search for forgiveness. The chemistry builds between them over time as their unlikely trust and friendship develops, and I appreciated the natural pace of their relationship. The suspenseful hunt for the murderer amid mystery and treason kept me glued to the pages as the layers are revealed bit by bit. I highly recommend this stirring historical romance!

This was a great book by Sian Ann Bessey. I loved learning more about this time period and about this area. It was interesting to learn about the Vikings and how people in the British Isle felt about them. I also liked that there was a mystery that needed solving and that Rhiannon had to face her fears in order to help Leif find the real murder. I thought this story was well told and felt like we were taken back in time and were there with the characters.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
This is a Medieval/Viking story with Christianity and Irish/Welsh elements.
Historically, it's fascinating to see how these peoples and cultures intermingled socially. In the story, Leif is a Viking who doesn't like the pillaging his people do after a specific encounter with Rhiannon. He can't forget her and ends up becoming a Christian and turning to silversmithing as a way of life.
Rhiannon was profoundly changed when her father was murdered by the Vikings. Years later, when they meet again, she has a hard time trusting Leif but his actions and heart are true.
There's also a lot of political intrigue and treason, and the romance between the two main characters is sweet and captivating.
I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
What a stunning and poignant novel! I really enjoyed this story set against the Irish Sea, the book brought Vikings and the Welsh people to life in a way I have never experienced before. I loved the themes and way this novel made me think and feel. The character growth was so beautiful and I loved the Christian themes that were woven so naturally into the plot. The rich historical details shone and I tell you, Sian Bessey knows how to write historical fiction like no other, this did not disappoint! The romance was light at first, but I loved the way it developed and the lasting impact the Rhiannon and Leif have on one another. When the romance picks up more at the end, it just made me smile all that much more and I felt like theirs was a true, deep, and lasting love. If you’re looking for a uniquely beautiful and inspiring read, do not miss this book! I could not put it down and already want to reread it. I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
When I think of Vikings, I don’t think of Ireland or Wales. And yet, in The Call of the Sea by Sian Ann Bessey, that’s exactly what we have – a mix of the Irish, the Welsh, and the Vikings all sharing page time and settlements. I found this, and the apparent gap in my world history education, fascinating and did some of my own research to learn more after closing the page of this intriguing novel. I love novels that inspire me to educate myself, don’t you?
We first meet Rhiannon on one of the worst days of her life and, even though we only barely know her yet as readers, be prepared for your heart to break for her shattered one. From the beginning, before the day turned tragic for our heroine, I could tell she was a character I would love. Her heart is big, her courage runs deep, and her spirit is strong. Even in the face of deep grief, these traits – and her love of the sea – remain consistent. And Leif… happy sigh. He is my favorite kind of hero… the redeemed rogue (or, in his case, the redeemed Viking). That devastating day for Rhiannon is the catalyst for Leif’s redemption, for his turning from the Norse gods, investigating the faith of the Irish, and ultimately deciding to follow Jesus. And then to watch a romance develop between Leif and Rhiannon… to me, this is such a beautiful picture of grace. And that’s the perfect way to describe The Call of the Sea, too.
Bottom Line: Other than Biblical fiction, I don’t usually go much earlier in history than the late Middle Ages in my reading, but I’m so glad that The Call of the Sea by Sian Ann Bessey took me to the shores of Wales and Ireland in the time of the Vikings. The setting was unique (and exquisitely described), the history fascinating, and the characters compelling. Not to mention that each of the various story threads that make up the whole of this novel are woven seamlessly together to paint a bigger picture of the damage done by sin and the healing that comes from forgiveness. A Viking novel that will even appeal to non-fans of this particular historical era – with a gentle romance that’s icing on the cake.
(I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book that I purchased for my own collection.)
Sian Ann Bessey slayed me in the most wonderful of ways and I am still recovering.
Her thoughtful characters, their deep emotions, the conversations, and the history.. Man this book will go down as one of my favorites.
Very few authors dare travel back to the 1100s and I try to find all of them that do. That time is so rich and hard, so very different from the materialistic place we find ourselves in now.
The romance, mystery, and history Sian Ann Bessey wove is simply lovely. It grabbed my attention and wouldn’t let me go. I was truly riveted.
Rhiannon and Leif (I mean can you get a more Viking name than that?!) were very intriguing characters, what they learned and how they grew through this story was heart tuggingly real.
For anyone who loves history, romance, mystery, or a little bit of everything–Then this is the book you’ve been looking for.
5 Stars. *I volunteered to read this book in return for my honest feedback.
Sian Ann Bessey beautifully weaves together an engaging historical romance that swept me back to Wales and Ireland in the year 1141. It’s rich in historical detail, with characters that vividly come to life. Political intrigue and a murder mystery to solve made for a delightfully suspenseful plot. Add in a lovely romance between the two protagonists, and this book hit all the right notes for me! I loved the themes of loss and grief, heartbreak and healing, finding oneself and finding God, people aren’t always what you believe them to be, forgiveness and redemption. This is a beautiful, exceptionally well written tale—one I couldn’t put down. I loved it. Many thanks to the author and Covenant Communications for an ebook copy. All opinions are my own.
Talk about lack of romance. This book had everything from secret identities, cruel suitors, and historical accuracy... but goodness, there was hardly any time spent between the main character and her love interest. Boring! :(
I was drawn to this Viking romance. I mean look at that cover! I have never read a book with Norse history; and I believe this is the earliest historical fiction I’ve read so far.
Sian Bessey has a gift of transporting readers to far off places in the past. I appreciated her glimpse into the political and social struggles during the 12th century. It’s made me want to read more in this time period, so if you have any recommendations for me…let me know in the comments.
What I enjoyed most about this book was reading the perspectives from the Norseman Leif and the Welsh Lady Rhiannon. Both characters are from different backgrounds, but are forever connected through an unfortunate event. Out of this darkness, Rhiannon moves to the royal court of Owain Gwynedd, and Leif's heart begins to soften to the idea of there being one God who is sovereign over all. For the next couple of years, Leif begins to meet with an Irish priest and changes his life from the plundering and looting to one filled with service and sacrifice.
At the same time, Rhiannon’s life at court has helped her mourn her loss and prepare for the next stage in her life. However, she can’t seem to figure out why she isn’t in love with her betrothed. Once Rhiannon and Leif’s paths cross again, their lives are flipped upside down again, and they work together to put the pieces together. Rhiannon has conflicting emotions towards Leif. She hates what he represents, but can’t help noticing a fondness of his presence. I’m stopping there, no spoilers.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. It felt like a solid 4 stars for me. My one critique is I wanted more romance. While this book is labeled as a historical romance, for me, it felt more like a historical fiction. And that’s ok..I love historical fiction too. Maybe it’s just me. Other reviewers are raving about the slow burn romance. So read it for yourself, and let me know what you think.

What a beautiful story! This historical fiction is based on many accurate historical details that the author read about. She soon realized that "the facts" would make a wonderful novel, and wonderful it is. The time period is brought to life through vivid writing describing the story's atmosphere. Readers are carried to Ireland and Wales in the 1100s when there were many Viking settlements around this area. This fact alone was very compelling to me.
Sian Ann Bessey has a way of quickly drawing you into any story she tells. This Viking Historical Romance has two main characters that are strong, determined, likable, and sympathetic. Your heart breaks for the many losses in Rhiannon's life. Leif, the Viking, is searching for a better and more peaceful way of living. Their paths cross one fateful night and things will never be the same for either one. I loved how seamlessly the threads of Rhiannon and Leif's lives are brought together through sundry of ways from raids, deceit, subterfuge, murder, and coming to know of Christianity. Though they come from different cultures and lands they can't stop thinking of one another. With the gifts of forgiveness, humility, trust, and respect, Rhiannon and Leif turn to each other to fight the evils around them. I really don't want to ruin the story for you by saying too much. All people need to appreciate for themselves the enjoyable experience of reading The Call of The Sea.
This is my first time reading a historical novel by Sian Ann Bessey, and I see what the hype is about! She is an excellent and immersive writer; this novel is detailed and atmospheric. I could easily picture the coast with the sand dunes and the rocks as she described. This is a story of forgiveness and redemption that I won’t soon forget. Leif made a worthy hero with his tremendous change of heart. Rhiannon’s experience was heartbreaking; her journey of healing inspiring. I loved the romance between her and Leif- a true enemies to lovers story. I also enjoyed the mystery- these elements made this story one of those where I want to hurry up and see what happens, but I also don’t want to read anymore because I don’t want it to end! This is an enthralling read, and I can’t wait to read more of Bessey’s work! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. From the gorgeous cover to the turn of the first page, readers will fall in love with this enchanting Welsh-Viking Royalty romance. A story that delves deep into rich historical details and has a mysterious and suspenseful plot, readers will devour this book. A beautiful theme in the story is of past mistakes coming back to haunt and the beautiful power of forgiveness and redemption. With a unique plot set against the Irish Sea and characters from Viking and Welsh descent, readers will find the characters interesting and intriguing. This poignant enemies to lovers tale will resonate with readers long after the turn of the last page.

From cover to cover this book is stunning. There are so many rich tones that weave it's way throughout this story that I was brought to tears more than once.
Nobody writes characters like Sian Bessey. Every book, without fail, leaves me with the most hopeful feeling that the world is a little bit better off because of these fictional characters she has created and for those of us who read about them. Their inherent goodness, while also striving to become better throughout the book is such a treasure to find and such a pleasure to read.
I was immediately interested in this book the second I heard the word 'Viking', and this book has been at the top of my most anticipated fall reads list of 2022 ever since. I can happily report that Sian did not disappoint my expectations with this book in any way. I was completely transported to the the early 1100's Wales coastline and by page 3 I was already marking passages to reread and that continued throughout the entire book.
The themes in this book were beautiful and seemed effortlessly intertwined into the story as I read. From friendships to heartbreak, loss/grief, hope, prejudice, redemption, forbidden love and forgiveness-this book has it all.
The mystery was expertly revealed little by little until I could not turn the pages fast enough. The love story was everything I hoped it would be--and more! I dare you not to fall in love with Leif and Rhiannon!
This is a top 2022 favorite for me and a book I will always treasure! I can't recommend this one enough-it was truly inspiring.
**Be sure to read the author notes at the end!! I can't even begin to imagine the amount of research that went into this book, but I can promise you those efforts made it shine!
Thanks to the author for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.
The Call of the Sea carries you to the coast of the Irish sea in a time of Vikings and Celtic kings to watch a beautiful romance blossom despite adversity, danger, and distance. Sian Ann Bessey masterfully pens a story that is both historically accurate and enchanting, and she uses captivating imagery to fully immerse the reader. As the story unfolded, I found myself on the coast of the Irish sea smelling the salt air and feeling the waves at my feet. I heard the hustle and bustle of the castle of a Celtic king as I walked across the cobblestone courtyard. I saw the silhouettes of Viking ships approaching from across the sea. I truly felt like I was right there experiencing it all as the mystery and romance unfolded page after page, and it was wonderful. The imagery was not the only thing about this story that kept me spellbound. Both the romance and the mystery of the story were unpredictable and exciting, and the plot was well-paced and thrilling until the satisfying happily ever after. The story and its setting are unique and refreshing, and I appreciated the break from regency ballrooms and Victorian London (although I adore those settings) to experience something more ancient and enchanting. This was my first experience with the work of Sian Ann Bessey, and I guarantee you that it will not be my last.
I received a complimentary copy of this book for review purposes in exchange for my honest opinion. My thoughts are my own and I truly did enjoy it.
While popular movies depict Viking life as raiding and pillaging, leaving a wake of gore in their wake, often overlooked is the Norse life in the villages, the craftsmen, the farmers, and the merchants. The impact of Christianity on the polytheistic Norse culture has also been explored by few.
Author Sian Ann Bessey delves into the Norse world and brings it to life as more than just raiding Vikings. While that remains a large part of the culture, Ms. Bessey explores the impact of cultural exchange, business relationships, and even love. Introducing Norseman Lief and Welsh Rhiannon, Bessey weaves a story that transfixes readers from beginning to end. Artfully blending historical fact with fiction, Rhiannon’s heartbreak and loss from the Vikings’ destruction lead to an adventure in politics between nations and a love that could heal her heart.
I highly recommend this book to any lover of historical fiction and adventure. Hopefully there will be a sequel, and I look forward to reading more of Rhiannon and Lief, as well as other books by this same author.
*I received an advance copy of this book. All opinions in this review are my own.
This setting and time in history is absolutely enthralling. Sian Bessey does an incredible job transporting the reader back in time! I loved the bits and pieces of Norse and Welsh history tied into Leif and Rhiannon's story. The sweet way these characters grow to love each other is so beautiful, full of forgiveness and grace. The only thing I could have wanted differently is more of our two main characters together.
Definitely pick this up if you like: 🛶He falls first 🛶"whodunit" mystery 🛶Elements of faith throughout 🛶Forbidden love 🛶Unique time period

Thank you so much to the author and publisher for my complimentary copy of this book. Any opinions here are my own.
Sian Ann Bessey is one of the few authors that can get me interested in reading a book about Vikings. Her stories suck me in and bring me back in time--this time I was transported to Wales and Ireland in the 1100's when Viking ships would come to raid and pillage what they could.
Leif loves being on a ship in the open water but he doesn't really enjoy the plundering. He can't forget the look on the face of the young woman (Rhiannon) when a shipmate needlessly kills her father. Rhiannon's life is forever changed when her father is killed during a Viking raid. She becomes an orphan and goes to live with her uncle, Owain Gwynedd, the King of Cymry now known as modern Wales. It's here events take place that bring Leif and Rhiannon together again and she must decide if she can trust the man she thinks of as her enemy.
I loved the characters of Rhiannon and Leif--separately and together. I liked that Leif searched out the Irish priest, learned of Christianity, and found a way to make a living that didn't involve plundering. Rhiannon is willing to trust Leif and form a friendship with him as they search for the truth behind a murder. I loved watching Rhiannon and Leif develop feelings for each other and wondered how would work it all out.
I love mysteries and suspenseful stories, and this book had me turning pages late into the night trying to find the clues to figure out who the murderer was and why they did it. Once I started this awesome book I didn't want to put it down--I read it in less than 2 days. I encourage you to read the author's notes at the end. She also made a YouTube video pronouncing all the Welsh names and places.
I received a complimentary copy from Covenant Communications via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own. I also bought an ebook for my personal digital library.
I really enjoyed this book! It's probably the most unique love story I've ever read and although I don't prefer romance, this one really just captured my heart!
During a brutal Vikings raid, a young womans father is killed right in front of her. One of the Vikings witnesses the murder, and is haunted by seeing the young woman witness her fathers murder in front of her. This incident shapes both of their lives and leads to more encounters between the two.
I wasn't sure if I would enjoy a book about Vikings. But I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. I actually would have preferred a slightly longer book that was richer in details of the culture and descriptiveness about the settings at that time. But it was well written. Because I'm someone who doesn't like a lot of gore and violence-I was pleasantly surprised there was only one graphic scene.
Last thing-it always delights and impresses me when authors creatively weave the gospel into an already compelling story in a way that makes you think, "Yes, only God could redeem this situation and story in this way." This is a beautiful love story of a Viking who steps out to follow a God of foreign lands and experiences the rich redemption that only the Christian God can demonstrate. The faith based portion of this story was so well done. This was my first book by this author and I will definitely be reading more from her.
I liked this book! I love how the story is based on true events and that Sian Ann Bessey put her own spin on it. It's a thrilling murder-mystery type of story with lots of secrets to uncover. It kept my attention pretty easily, and the pacing felt steady and strong.
Lief isn't an ordinary Viking with his openness to Christianity and disdain for raids, so that came as a surprise to me. It set up the perfect opportunity for an enemies-to-lovers romance with a Cymry girl. However, the romance was very much a subplot. I would have liked more romantic moments between them and more relationship growth shown. The book is labeled as a romance, but the murder-mystery plot was clearly the focus.
All in all, I think the historical aspect of this book is its strength, but I would have appreciated more Viking grittiness and more romance. But I was still entertained by the story!

I have not ever read a book quite like this one. Sian Ann Bessey is an amazing author of historical fiction. I loved the way she included Vikings in this one about the people of Wales. She made this period of history jump off the page. And she included some great historical details at the end as well, so the reader learns just a little bit.
This would have been a hard period of time to live in. People died from disease or other things that we can help now far too often. Rhiannon had already lost her mother. And just when she least expects it, the Vikings kill her father. In front of her. That would have been something hard to recover from. I loved Rhiannon’s resilience and the way she helps her cousin later, as well.
Leif is a Viking who also witnessed Rhiannon’s father’s death. I loved the way he let that change him. He changes his believe in God because of it, and that was really a special part of the story. I also loved his curious mind. He’s unsure why he should believe things the way they have been presented. And works hard to find out the truth.
This is a sweeping story of love, intrigue, forgiveness and danger that you won’t want to miss!
The plot goes like this: Rhiannon is a young noblewoman, who lived in a part of Wales at the time when Wales was a series of small kingdoms and the Vikings raided the monasteries and stole gold, a group of these Vikings arrive at Rhiannon's village, steal and kill her father, among the Vikings is Leif, who feels sorry for Rhiannon and eventually, too tormented, approaches the Christian God who is not so well known to the Vikings, Leif decides to change his life, he meets Rhiannon again and they try to overcome the past, the differences, the complicated world and their love......
I love Viking history, but most novels make them sex gods with abs and tattoos, almost all these erotic novels are a kind of contemporary romances pretending to be "historical romances" that explore nothing more than a sexual fantasy and an empty love story. So when I came across this novel that promised to be a more serious "CLEAN ROMANCE" , I thought it would be something different, that it would really focus on the Viking essence, on a story of enmity, that it would show us the Viking universe, the conflicts of the time, not only armed but also religious, all going hand in hand with a love story, then I read the excellent reviews and started reading it, unfortunately it was NOTHING WHAT I EXPECTED.
The story takes too long to start, it is unnecessarily long, there are unnecessary descriptions, dialogues that are too long and characters in excess, it is not that those things are bad, but that should be accompanied by a more complex story, this argument is simple and for me it has too much filler that is not entertaining, the beginning is really slow I abandoned the story about ten times, the initial scenes are supposed to be captivating because it is the invasion, the murder, and all that, but the truth is that the scenes do not surprise or impress, the story does not reflect any feeling of Rhiannon or Leif, in general the characters are not developed or have anything that stands out, they tell us that she is brave and a great woman but we never see that, the narration does not transmit or provoke emotions, then too much time passes for something to happen, we have pages and pages of empty conversations, encounters of characters without any objective, plot lines that do not go anywhere, and so on until it ends, really the story has no entertaining moments, neither dramatic nor sad nor anything, it is flat from beginning to end, the romance almost does not exist, Leif and Rhiannon meet almost halfway through the book, and from then on they have no obstacles or great development AT ALL, the part of forgiveness and Leif's change that is supposed to be the main theme, does not make sense, there is no natural process, basically Leif is a doubtful and confused Viking at the beginning, and a few pages later he is a Christian, he has repented and is a new person, I see that the majority accepts it without further ado, but I wanted to understand what led him to that, what made him understand that what they did was wrong when he was taught that it was normal, that stealing was acceptable and that the world was whoever could take it , so it did not seem credible to me that from the beginning Leif understood that the Viking life was bad, why did it bother him to kill Rhianon's father and not bother him to kill the hundreds of monks who had killed before? It doesn't make sense, and look I think that's the problem with Christian or clean romances that are almost always too simple, they give you things without explanation, without development and without sense and you have to take it, accept it and enjoy it, sorry but I don't like those stories, this book in many moments seemed like it was for children, it's definitely not my type of reading and it didn't do justice to the Viking story.
