Assignment Potsdam: Countdown To War

Rate this book
Berlin 1961. The Cold War is heating up and US Army Colonel Gerard "Mac" McDesmond has just taken over as Chief, United States Military Liaison Mission, located deep behind enemy lines in East Germany. This intelligence gathering unit, is the only American military outpost, permitted to operate in East Germany and behind the Iron Curtain.

Mac knew the work was dangerous, but he never imagined what awaited his arrival to East Berlin. Five deep cover CIA assets have gone dark; an East German cop is chasing a serial rapist and killer who may have abducted a member of the USMLM; McDesmond's long time friend, Marshal Konev, CINC of all Soviet Forces, Germany, has uncovered a plot to assassinate Khrushchev and change the course of history; and Mac has 72 hours to find a microdot that will either keep the lid on East Berlin or turn JFK's "Berlin Problem" into the next World War.

In his debut book, author Charlie Fitzgerald, who lived in East Germany during the Cold War, brings to life a fast paced "edge of your seat" work of historical fiction. While many of the events in his book actually occurred, still many more come from the creative mind of the author. So strap in and hold on.

It is a unique, fast-paced read.

This is a fantastic book to read and is very well written. This debut thriller by Charlie FitzGerald is a historical work with an inside view of the multiple complexities of the United States and Soviet Relationships. This is a piece of art and is a fast-paced read with very easy-to-follow and identify main characters throughout the book as they work through many historical events.
I loved reading this book with the realistically written characters; it draws you in from the first page.
