William Ramsbottom was just an ordinary 12-year-old boy growing up in the 50s in Middle England. Although kind-hearted and always ready to help anyone in need, he had no desire to become a hero. However, heroic deeds just seemed to seek him out – and, by the time he was 14, he had unwittingly brought good fortune to his family, friends, employers and his home town as well as himself. Well, anyone would have done the same, wouldn’t they?
Kids of today would be amazed to know how such publicity and fame happened, even if you didn’t want it, long before the days of the Internet and mobile phones. Yet it still happened to one ordinary boy.
