I’ve had my heart crushed more times than I can count. Swearing off men was the best thing I ever did. The second best—taking a job waitressing at The Firken bar off campus.
My grumpy boss is nice to everyone… except me.
Which shouldn’t bother me, but it does.
Darren is handsome, mysterious—and even more unavailable than I am.
I’ve gotten over my ghosts, but he’s still chasing his.
I thought after years of working in close proximity maybe, just maybe, we would finally cross that line. But almost kisses don’t count, not even off the clock.
I wish he wasn’t so closed off, so he could see what I see.
He may be a broken player… but his damaged heart is definitely worth saving.
Darren
Falling in love again is not an option. Keep my distance… that’s the rule.
Running The Firken and working as a personal trainer is all I have room for in my life.
Night after night I watch Blossom turn down guys. And every damn time I’m relieved.
She’s smart, beautiful, and something about her makes me want to protect her. Even if that means from me.
After years of fighting my feelings we became friends, until I ruined things by pushing her away and into the arms of another man.
I need to pull it together or risk losing the best thing that’s happened to me since my life came crashing down.
This is a full length novel with no cheating and an HEA.
Broken Player by R.C. Stephens waa an emotional romance of two broken souls. Blossoms and Darren both had a troubled and heartbreaking past and it took a while for them to open up their hearts again.
Blossoms had a tragic life to say the least. She wanted to leave Westfall but now she is starting her college course here. Her sister Rebel finds her a job in The Firken, the restaurant where Rebel used to work too. The manager Darren is a very nice person to everyone but due to some reason he is cold towards her. She has a crush on him but she realised that it is going nowherem. Over the years they become friends and little accidents force Darren to face his feels. But are his demons too strong?
Blossoms and Darren both have a long list of issues. Blossoms horrible parents, her bad relationships, responsibilities for her life- everything have piled up. But I have to say that she tackled everything boldly and her resilience is admirable. She is still positive and wants to keep of struggling till things get better. She is kind and helpful and has a big cheery heart. On the other side, Darren stopped living after his trauma. He had to leave professional hockey for his injury and then suffered some deep loss in his personal life. He is just going through the motions. Blossoms made him feel unbalanced. She made him feel and that made him defensive. It was a very slow burn kind of story with multiple time jumps. The secondary characters were really nice. Darren and Blossoms had a special connection as they felt a kinship in their broken pieces. The chemistry was always there. But they had to work through their emotional baggage first.
Perfectly enjoyable, but not my favorite of the bunch. I do see how Blossom and Darren are made for each other and make a good match, but I didn't get as swoony over them as I have other couples. "Broken Player" has a more mature feel because the characters are older (in their 30's) and have difficult pasts to work through.
Honestly I was sad this was over, I expected more chapters to pop off! This book was really good, like I was feeling frustrated but this is a mid slow burn so it’s normal. I’m not a very patient person, so … I started this book with no recollection that I’ve read 2 of the previous one’s lol but once I started reading and seeing this previous couples popup I recognized them right away. And I honestly love when that happens because it means that those characters made an impact in my readers life.
This couple: wow! The story’s about Darren & Blossom. Now, I don’t even how old is Darren but Blossom is a 32 (she starts with 28-29) yo woman who all her life she has lived in this small college town. She took care of her younger sister since she was 17 so now she’s in college working for Darren. Our MMC is the owner of the bar where Blossom starts working and he is actually broken, his biggest asset is shattered and he mourns everyday until the day he dies (his words). They both feel their connection, and honestly since the beginning they were doomed to be together. Their relationship doesn't actually happen until 3 years later. like HIT ME WHERE IT HURTS!! Their chemistry is there, but neither of them is making a move until someone else asks her out and Darren feels that she is actually slipping away. Did he need the push? Yes. Was it the alpha protector in him? Also yes. So if you're not into that, you'll hate this. She did too, but she (as i did) forgave him pretty quickly lol
Anyways, their relationship is pretty amazing, they both push each other to their best selfs and they eventually realize that they needed each other. There is the inevitable 3rd act breakup, just a warning but its worth it. He needed to go through that in order to have a better future with her.
Now, i love both characters. They both need to go to therapy though lol just be warned that both chracters are flawed and they might not be everyone's cup of tea. Specially Blossom, she's tooooooo nice. Her heart is made of gold, im not even kidding.
Tropes: College romance (meh kinda), older couple (in their 30s), forced proximity, boss/employee, tragic past, alpha male.
I have absolutely loved every visit to Westfall U and this is no exception. Darren and Blossom have such heartbreaking backstories and the way that this friendship and relationship grows was something I almost thought wasn’t going to work out. But the growth and the connection was my favorite part of this story,
I’ve loved all of these characters but I think I might be a little obsessed with Blossom. I’m already greedy for the next book about this group of friends. The countdown is on.
I loved Blossom and Darren’s story. Both have issues from their past. But I loved them grow as friends and then open up to their feelings. Darren is this incredible guy and when he truly opens up to Blossom, it’s beautiful! I loved watching him take care of Blossom and care for her since she takes care of everyone else. I loved this series and these characters and love their Thanksgiving together!! Family and friends are everything.
Broken Player is book five in R.C. Stephens Westfall U series. It can be read as a standalone but Darren and Blossom have been in the previous books. We know the tragic backstory to Blossom mainly through her sister Rebel (Heartless Player #1) but Darren has always been a bit of a mystery. An emotional romance about two broken and troubled people who get a chance of love and happiness neither expected. These two are older than the previous couples so the story is set more in the bar than the university and there is less hockey action.
Blossom gave up everything to look after Rebel and protect her from their father when their mother took off. She has had a hard life and it didn’t help when her last relationship turned toxic. She is off men totally as needs to repair the damage her ex caused before dating again. She is moving forward by going back to college and starting a new job at The Firkin.
Darren runs The Firkin but we know very little about him. It turns out his life hasn’t gone to plan after a series of sad events. He has never got over a major trauma and suffers badly from the guilt he still feels. He really doesn’t know who he is anymore and is having to live a life he never wanted. He also has the responsibility of looking after his father but has the support of his Aunt Rivi. She is great fun but also worried about her nephew. She is determined to make him see that what he is doing isn’t living and he needs to finally let go of the past.
What neither expect is their reaction to each other on her first day so they try to ignore the instant attraction. He is friends with all the students and hockey players but is grumpy and indifferent towards her. Their lives have been traumatic and it is taking both of them time to recover. As the years pass a friendship develops between them and Blossom starts to feel hopeful. Darren fights against it, he won’t allow himself to be in a relationship with Blossom or some happiness. He isn’t sure he will ever be able to love again or let someone love him.
There are a couple of events when things look like they might get together but in the end it is a slow burn over four years until Darren finally succumbs to his feelings for Blossom. He is made to face up to reality when someone else takes an interest in her and he is shocked at his response to the possibility of losing her. As you’d expect their relationship doesn’t run smoothly but with the problems they have both experienced and been through, it was for the best it took so long. They both had to heal to be in a better place for their relationship to work. However, when faced with a situation that brings back all his bad memories, will he be able to cope or will he deal with it in his usual unhealthy way? Knowing how kind and thoughtful Blossom was, I was hoping she’d stand by by him as he worked through all his pain and finally confronts his very sad past.
“Everyone deserves a piece of happiness, and it takes courage to move forward.”
I felt sorry for all this couple had been through but I easily worked out what was going to happen, which spoilt it for me. I did love catching up with the girls and hearing all their news. We find out how all the relationships are going and how well the boys are doing. This series has brought together this group of friends, brothers and sisters and made them into a family. It is great seeing them all support one another, overcome what they have been through and find love. The next in this series is Damaged Player and looks like it will be Evan and Cait’s story but I wouldn’t rule out the new guy Noah.
I looooooved this book so much! It brought me back to book #1 and #2 that got me beyond hooked on this series. We had obviously met Blossom in book #1 and how can you not but love her?! RC Stephens has written her as this amazing and selfless person and I for one have always loved her! Then throughout the series we've been given glimpses of her and then of her and Darren. So when this book finally arrived it was like a sigh of relief because FINALLY we had Blossom and Darren's story! And what a story it is!!!! O-M-G!
First off, Stephens is an incredible writer. I have absolutely loved every single one of her books, even becoming slightly obsessed with the books and the worlds that she's created. Her writing is so incredible that you just get completely lost in the lives and worlds of these college students. So the writing is beyond on point as well as the stories and the worlds that she's crafted, but beyond that, the depth of the characters and the emotions that each and every one evokes has really captured me and kept me salivating for more. The sweet and tender moments are all the more incredible; the humor is beyond funny; the heart break feels real as do all of the challenges that the characters face; and all of this culminates in the absolute best HEA at the end!
That said, this book - THIS BOOK - was incredible. It brought me back to the beginning, of why I fell in love with this series. My favorites in the series thus far have been books #1 and 2 (I love all of the books in this series but there was just something about those books in particular - like a first love), and this book brought it back for me. I loved the time capsule of this book - how it showed an evolution of Blossom and Darren's story, but also brought back parts of the other characters' stories. But when it came to revealing more of Darren and Blossom - it was just everything. How their story unfolded - how Stephens revealed the truth to us... OMG it was so much - almost too much! There was so much to unpack. And the heartbreak in this... wow. And I have to say that the whole thing with Blossom and Rebel's mom (which we've learned more about in past books), wow... how that unfolded in this book and how the truth was revealed.... way to give us a villain, Stephens! But here enlies more of Stephens' brilliance, how she manages to evoke so many emotions in the reader. With all that said, yet another incredible book that I loved and so highly recommend!
Two people with broken and tragic pasts trying to find that HEA finally.
This was a slow burn with an enemies to lovers feel. Darren and Blossom were two characters we met in the first book in this series, but this can be read as a standalone but you will see reoccurring characters from previous books. I would suggest to get a real feel for these characters you definitely might want to read the previous books.
Darren was a the broody/grumpy boss that comes off as secretive and/or mysterious. No one knows much about his past other than he is unable to play hockey anymore and is running the off campus bar & grill "the Firken." He isn't very nice to Blossom but slowly and I mean slowly he opens up to her. He has went through a very horrific tragedy that has left him fearing any type of a relationship again. He tries hard to not have any feelings for Blossom and treat her as just an employee but he finds it harder than he thought it would be.
Blossom is the older sister to Rebel from book one. She and Rebel have had a very hard upbringing and Blossom has been both parent and sister to Rebel. Now it's finally time for Blossom to start her life over and go back to college while holding down a waitressing job at the Firken. She hasn't had much luck on the life front including relationships, so she is swearing off men except one grumpy guy who makes her want to get to know him more. With all her hardships life has thrown her, she still shows patience, love, and understanding and that might be just enough to get Darren to open up.
This story spans over years to give each characters growth and maturity of their situations and a better foundation to find their HEA. I definitely feel like this is a book that you need to have patience with as the story unfolds because there is a lot happening between these two and reoccurring characters also. I had the pleasure of reading this early and it gave a greater understanding of these two characters and their journeys to overcome tragic circumstances to find a solid foundation to grow their relationship into more. I highly recommend it if you want the ups and downs of this highly emotional book.
Blossom is a woman in her early thirties, and she is starting fresh. Or at least that is what, Rebel her sister is calling it. The sisters were dealt a bad hand when it came, to their parents. Their mother ran, out on them. Leaving them with their crazy, abusive, and alcoholic father. Who ran them over with his car and made, Rebel an amputee. Darren Stanfeld is her new boss, at the Firken, the new job she is already late for, on the first day. Holland and Rebel both have worked for him, saying he is wonderful, to work for. Well, from the first impression she made, things never get better for her.
Their first impression of each other physically is off the charts. But, there is no way in hell Darren was ever going to show, Blossom an ounce of his underbelly where his vulnerability is lying. You see Darren had lost someone near and rear to him, just four years before, Blossom started working, at the Firken, making his attraction, to her feel like disloyalty. So, hearing every time, Blossom is asked out and then, rejecting their advances, always relieved him. You would think he would get a clue that she is wanted by other men. Especially, when she tells them, ‘Sorry I am taking time for myself. I am working on healing and thinking more clearly. For myself.’
It's four years in when his brother finally comes home and he asks her out. Mind you, Darren has told her already when he almost kissed her. That they would never work and never be more than friends ever. So when Quinn his brother, asks her out she says, ‘Yes.’ In between all these years, she has met his aunt Rivi who is a gem of a character. Both on paper and within the story as part of the story. Especially, when she is in match-making mode. Now Quinn being in the picture puts, a different spin on things. They’ve always been competitive but this is different somehow. Blossom is his and his hand is now over the fire so, to speak.
Can Darren risk his heart again? Better yet, can he move on from his past, and learn, or even want, to live in the present? By the way, his emotions and hormones seem, to be wanting to, but the way he physically comes up short. Very good story I didn't want, to put down.
Westfall U has been a wonderful series to read, BROKEN PLAYER is the fifth instalment. R.C. Stephens has introduced so many amazing characters along the way, but there have been two who I really wanted to know more about, Blossom and Darren.
Blossom and Darren have both been broken by their past. Blossom had a rough childhood, having to grow up quicker than expected after her mother left. She spent her formative years raising and protecting her younger sister, now it's her time. Blossom has enrolled in College and has begun working at The Firken. Darren runs the local bar, The Firken, his story has been a mystery as he keeps to himself. He is suffering from an extreme case of guilt due to a major trauma, he has the belief that he should always carry that guilt with him. His dream was no longer achievable, now he just watches everyone else chase and reach theirs.
Blossom and Darren's relationship evolved and deepened over a number of years. It has been the epitome of a slowburn romance. They've gone from colleagues, who didn't really like each other, to friends, but can they move through all the baggage they carry and become so much more? The attraction between them is definitely there, in fact it has many sparks flying and the heat between them rising. When Darren finally opens up to Blossom I could feel the weight he was carrying finally slip from his shoulders.
Blossom and Darren's story is an emotional one. It broke my heart and slowly replaced the pieces. It made me shed tears, but it also made me smile as these two broken people came together. Their journey to find happiness may have taken time, but it was worth the pain.
Another fabulous, emotional tale from R.C. Stephens.
Kindle Unlimited: Yes Stand-alone: Yes** Author: R.C. Stephens Rating: 5/5 ⭐️ Spiciness Rating: 3/5 🌶 POV: First Person Dual Perspective Main Couple: Darren and Blossom Trope(s): Enemies Friends Lovers, Damaged Hero, Grumpy Boss, Forced Proximity, Sports Romance
…”What if I leaned over and kissed you right now?” “I’d kiss you right back.” I don’t have to think twice. “I come with baggage. I don’t know what I’m doing,” he admits like he’s trying to warn me away.
Broken Player is Book 5 in the Westfall U Series. Books are interconnected standalone’s, but reading in order will bring you more connection and joy. This is hands down my favorite in the series. Darren in all his broken, grumpy hotness draws you in like a beacon and inspires you to want to kiss all his hurts away. This guy. What a storyline. This is a second chance in life for both of them. Blossom and Darren’s story is years in the making and this story takes us through them.
Darren is the literary onion. We have only learned the bare basics about this guy and then the story unfolds and we realize how much he held in.
Blossom is entering college as a mature student. She put her goals on hold to ensure her sister Rebel did all the good things. Abandoned by their mom, they lost their father, and Blossom became the responsible adult. Now it’s her time.
Rebel helps get her a job at the Firken. Blossom is still recovering from a relationship gone wrong.
Darren is attracted to her from the get-go, but keeps her frustratedly at arms length because he has his own demons to deal with.
So, for years they work together. Blossom adjusts to college life. Darren keeps being him. But, Blossom slowly works herself under his skin. He slowly lets her in on his truths. Their friendship evolves.
And, slowly Darren realizes he could have and should have more out of his life.
#brokenplayer is book 5 in the #westfalluniversityseries by @rc_stephens_author
Darren is going through the motions of life after heartbreak. He is friendly to everyone that comes into the bar, but mostly keeps them at arms length. He hasn’t felt anything in years, until his new waitress walks in. There’s something about her that stirs things inside of him. But guilt always wins over and he pushes her away. Over the years, he and Blossom form a friendship ish type of deal. Until something clicks for Darren that he has the choice to live the shell of his life, or try to be with someone who can help fill the holes in his heart. Is he strong enough to move on from his past or will guilt take over once again?
Blossom hasn’t ever had it easy. From growing up in a horrible family, to putting her dreams aside to help raise her sister. Now it’s her turn to go back to school and make something of herself. But she needs a job. It’s where she meets Darren and is drawn to him. But after being hurt by men in the past, she swears them all off. She’s strong, independent and determined to be better than her parents. Can she trust his hot and cold after years of being pushed away or is he going to break her just like the others?
So I won’t lie, this book took me some time to get into. It was written differently than how I expected, and you really start at the beginning of their story. These two poor souls have been through more crap in their lives than anyone should, but if they lean on each other, maybe they can make something wonderful. I really like this series, even though this didn’t hit the mark perfectly for me, I’d defiantly still recommend it to anyone who wants the happily ever after.
When Blossom and Darren meet both of them are broken and struggling to overcome their pasts to move forward. Blossom just got out of a toxic relationship and has decided to take a dating hiatus to work on herself. Darren is friendly but he holds people at arms length because of the guilt he carries around but something changes when Blossom walks into the bar on her first day of work. She’s everything he wants but knows he shouldn’t because he doesn’t think he deserves happiness again and he gives her the cold shoulder. Slowly, very slowly over time and after a series of critical moments, Blossom and Darren become somewhat friends but both of them want more. Blossom knows she’s ready to move forward but is the person she wants to move forward with ready or is he still stuck in place?
Blossom has been through a lot and is still standing despite everything and has the hugest heart ever. She’s always caring for everyone else and especially Darren when he needed her most. When Darren finally opened up to Blossom you could feel the weight slowly lifting off his shoulders and the way he cared for her was tender and loving something she’s never experienced before. They make a solid couple and they did the right thing by working on themselves before getting together even if it took them years.
This series is great about updating you on the lives of the previous couples and it’s great to see them thriving and loving their lives together. Everything works out when the timing is right and Wolfe’s sister Cait will get her story in the next book in the series.
Thank you @rc_stephens_author and @greyspromo for this eARC in exchange for my honest feedback.
Broken Player by R.C Stephans is book 5 in the Westfall U series.
Blossom & Darren ♡
⭐⭐⭐⭐½/5
Broken Player can be read as a Stand-alone however both MC are met prior in the series. Plus this series is amazing so I'd recommend reading them all in general.
I've waited for this deep dive into these 2 characters I was always so curious about. And finally we got it. This is a slowburn but worth it!
Darren is the broody, guarded bartender with the weight of the world on his shoulders. The man that we've all wanted to dig into. Blossom is the selfless, hardworking older Sister to Rebel who is at a point where she is starting her life after giving it all up to raise her sister. Starting college at her age isn't easy! (I'm 34 and think about going back all the time so Kudos to B for pushing through).
Both broken with heartbreaking pasts, just trying to push through life. Coworkers (boss/employee). who aren't very fond of one another. (Gives off an enemies to lovers) To friends who could be more if only they could just let down their walls and unpack all their baggage first. This story is emotional. Full of all the feels. The growth of these two characters is amazing. Blossom learning to love herself and build up her self confidence. Darren learning how to & forgiving himself. The attraction is there. Those steamy moments are 🌶🔥. Their road to Happily Ever After isn't an easy breezy snap your fingers and you're there. It's slow and the book takes place over a few years. I absolutely love this group of friends and family that we get to keep up with each book. But most of all I'm so glad Darren & Blossom got their Happily Ever After... FINALLY!
Broken Player by R, C, Stephens is book 5 of the Westfall U Series. The Westfall saga continues with Darren and Blossom's story. If you've read the other books in this series then you know that this has been a long time coming.
Darren, the mysterious, broody bartender at The Firken who keeps everyone at arms length and then some. Not many know of his history and he's intent on keeping it that way. He has the world on his shoulders and is resolved on carrying it as his cross to bare. He watches everyone achieving their dreams and living life while his keeps passing him by.
Blossom, the tragic, self sufficient, kind and hardworking woman trying to start her life after giving it up to raise her younger sister. Starting college at her age and working at the popular college bar keeps her busy enough and falling for a guy is not on her agenda.
The attraction between these two keeps the heat going. It's a slow burn that intensifies chapter by chapter. The family unit between the group of friends throughout the series keeps building and intensifies their relationships with each other.
Every book added to this series feels like I'm coming back home every single time. The previous book's couples are not forgotten but just keeps building. I feel like I'm growing along with this group of friends and family. It has been a joy that I look forward to reading.
If you love college, sports, hockey, brooding male, strong female, family dynamic contemporary romance, then you're in for a treat! You'll get addicted to this series just as I am.
Even though Broken Player is in a series, it can be read as a standalone.
I received this book as an ARC but I'd pay money for it.
A stream of emotions from the beginning till the last page. Two beautifully broken people who deserve a happiness in the world. There is some much sadness and tragedy in the pasts of Blossom and Darren. But where Blossom is hellbent on making the best possible out of her life, is Darren stuck in his world. In his head, in his thoughts.
Over the years and constantly working for Darren, Blossoms finally gets to know a little bit of Darren and they become something like friends. But more isn't possible for Darren. And so Blossom has to put her crush on him to rest, once and for all, and move on.
I really fell for Darren, you saw that underneath all the grumpiness there is a man with a heart of gold, but so damaged and broken, it seemed irreparable. But he had to get out of his head by himself, and that process was very painful to read about.
Blossom is such a lovable and caring woman. Putting the needs of others before the needs of herself. But despite that chasing her dreams and doing everything possible to make them come true.
As these two wonderful characters interact more with another the story became full of all the heartwarming moments as well as the heartbreaking ones. The slowly built tension between them was incredible. The steamy scenes at the right pace and with the right amount of desire.
Wonderful story, can't wait to read more of these wonderful bunch of people from Westfall. Lovely that they all have their appearances and a very strong friendship.
Having read other Westfall U installments i've been looking so forward to jumping back into this series! As soon as i stumbled across the announcement for this one while on social media i wanted to read it! I picked it up and got right back into the Westfall U world!
Blossom and Darren's journey pulled me in right from the get go! These two are brought into each other's lives when Blossom starts working at The Firken and Darren becomes her boss. As attraction comes into the picture, can these two take a chance on one another? I couldn't wait to see how it'd all play out!
Both Blossom and Darren had been through tough things and i was so glad that i got to dig deeper with them. I didn't know how they'd handle their feelings for each other and how they'd tackle certain things which had me even more glued to their story. I liked how there was a lot realness to them and their story. The chemistry between these two was undeniable! Blossom and Darren had my heart and i feeling so dang much from start to finish!
It was awesome being back in the Westfall U world! I'll definitely be going back and reading the two installments i missed.
With Broken Player, Ms.Stephens has created a great read that brought the feels and the real! Her writing has a way of grabbing my attention and not letting go! I can't wait to dive back into this series with the sixth installment, Damaged Player! 💜
*I volunteered to read and review a copy of this book from Grey's Promotions / the author*
You will love Darren and Blossom. Both have their baggage and don't want to start anything with each other. Blossom comes from a dysfunctional family and had to give up so much to take care of her younger sister, Rebel. Now Rebel is grown and has met the love of her life. Blossom is finally free to go to college to get a degree. She's just getting over her previous boyfriend and is on a man fast when she meets Darren, her new boss.
Darren is stunned speechless when he meets Blossom. He hired her sight unseen since she was Rebel's sister and Rebel was working for him as a waitress. He did not know she was stunning. He is not ready to be attracted to anyone since his last relationship was tragic, so he keeps Blossom at a distance, professional but not friendly. They both try to deny the attraction but it continues to grow over the years. They become reluctant friends, Darren because he is attracted to her but refuses to do anything about it and Blossom because she thinks Darren doesn't like her LIKE HER, since he is grumpy and cold to her. Little did she know that when she turned down guys at the restaurant, he was relieved that she was not interested.
I loved how their relationship develops over the years. They both have their demons but they are able to have their friendship over the years. Once they get over their fears and kiss, their relationship is still rocky, but worth the ride.
I received an advanced copy for my honest opinion.
Darren and Blossom will grab your heart and burrow in to stay Broken Player (Westfall U Book 5) by R.C. Stephens is an amazingly wonderful, slow-burn, tension building, friends to lovers, destined to be romance. Darren and Blossom will break your heart then inspire admiration with their strength. The plot is highly emotional, full of vulnerability while also showing growth in healing. It’s clear that Darren and Blossom’s relationship had to develop as it did. Beginning with friendship, granted in a sort of dysfunctional way, the friendship paves the way for trust to develop and gives Darren permission to confide and share his past. Blossom is just fantastic. She’s sweet, kind and so warm and giving, often thinking of others before herself. While Darren attempts to remain aloof and distant from Blossom, his attraction to her wears him down over time. It all comes to a head, he cannot and does not want to deny what he feels anymore and makes a decision to let Blossom know. Overall, grief has it’s own timeline and Darren’s is particularly long and arduous as well as veiling some truths and almost ruins any chance at love, happiness and family with Blossom. I admire Blossom for her patience considering the circumstances and Darren comes through in the end. I adore this couple and love their HEA. I sincerely hope this couple makes appearances in any future books in this series! I read an ARC of this book via Grey’s Promotions and voluntarily share my review.
Finally, it's about time for Blossom and Darren's love story! They have danced around each other (and in my head) for a while now and even if we knew about Blossom's issue from her sister's book, Darren is a bit mysterious.
In this book, we got a chance to know Darren's background and issue. And turn out, he was once be an NHL player but life happened so he came back to take care of his father's business. Both Darren and Blossom have been attracted to each other since their first meeting but both also have carried their own baggages so they set their relationship as boss and employee. And they slowly learn more about each other from there.
I like that Stephens takes time to tell us, readers, how their relationship has been developed through years. At the present, Darren still has been on denial while Blossom seems to heal herself and want to move on with her life. When she goes out with someone else that is when Darren finally opens his eyes and decides to make a move. It's very entertaining to read his aunt and his brother meddling with his love life. He deserves it after he kept Blossom at his arm's length for so long. And of course, they don't get their happy ending easily. I want to smack Darren's head so hard but admire Blossom's strength and understanding at the same time. Darren is so lucky that Blossom loves him!
I adore this series and now that Darren and Blossom finally get together, I can't wait for Cait to have her own happiness.
I feel like every time I read a series, I can’t pick a favourite couple and these two are no different. Darren and Blossom have been with us throughout the entire series, so to hop along for their journey has been…highly anticipated.
Blossom’s character was so beautifully broken from the very first book, ever since that douchebag boyfriend of hers caused a mess. And Darren is so closed off but multi-layered. There’s the Darren the rest of the gang know and love and then there’s the one Blossom has to unravel.
Overall, such a beautiful story. Was truly cheering for these two throughout the entire book.
Sharing my favourite bit because it was just super sad but also not?
“Before you say anything else, you should know I am pregnant. I went to the doctor, and she did a urine test but she also took a blood sample, and it came back positive. I understand if you don’t want anything to do with this baby. I’m fully prepared to take on the responsibility myself. I mean, it won’t be easy,” she says and tears spring from her eyes. “But it’s not like I haven’t been faced with a difficult situation before.”
“Baby. No.” I get down on both knees and move toward her, taking her hands in mine. “I’m so sorry for making you feel like I didn’t want you. I love you so damn much, but the thought of a pregnancy also terrified me. I’m all in, Blossom, for everything. Me and you and this baby, we are a family. I want to be here for both of you and love both of you.
Don’t know what to think of this story. I loved the underlying ‘enemies to lovers’ type of vibe it had. But some of it just didn’t work for it.
Blossom didn’t have a good life. She was barely hanging on. But she was starting University and hoping to get over a terrible relationship. Starting to work at The Firken bar off campus and having a grumpy boss might not be starting totally over. But she will deal. All she have to do is her job. And maybe not drool too much over said grumpy boss…
Darren lost the love of his life and was finding it difficult to move on. He also has a dad that is not dealing too well with his loss. He cant play hockey anymore and is now running his dad bar. Having to work with Blossom is going to be hell, but he will just treat her as one of his employees and that’s it. Saying it and doing it might be a bit harder to do though…
The story was good. What Darren had to go through was tragic. And I liked the fact that Blossom helped him move on. What I didn’t enjoy was some parts was too much repeating the same thing. Also man almost 4years later for them to get together was a bit much. And then everything happened too fast towards the end. They had amazing chemistry and but damn it just took too long.
This is a book all about starting over. Blossom and Darren have tragic backstories which have caused them to put a pause on living their life. But when Blossom starts working at Darren's bar, she starts to come alive again. Darren seems to instantly dislike her for reasons unknown to Blossom since he seems to like everyone but her. I would describe this as a slow burn, enemies to friends to lovers. He's a grump and she's the sunshine. There is also a ton of mutual pining and the journey these two go on is emotional. If you love angst and slow burns this book is definitely your cup of tea! The story spans a few years which allows the characters time to grow and develop in a believable timeframe. My only issues with the book were it could be over descriptive at times and there were a lot of previous character appearances that took up a good chunk of the story. Considering I haven't read the other books in the series, the character cameos took me out of Blossom and Darren's story a bit. Overall though, if you enjoy slow burns, angst, grump/sunshine trop, workplace romance, friends to lovers and mutual pining give Broken Player a try.
* Thank you to Grey's Promotions and the author for providing an advanced readers copy. I voluntarily read and reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*
Blossom and Darren took me on an emotional and hopeful journey. For Blossom, she had to grow up fast and take care of her younger sister when her parent’s let her down. She is incredibly strong and is working to rebuild her life as she enrolls in college. She is recovering from a bad relationship so she doubts her decision making which has her focusing on school and work as she rebuilds her confidence. Her sister Rebel, gets her a job at where she had worked and loved her boss, Darren. But when Blossom meets Darren, he’s not as friendly to her. Darren has been hiding from life, just going through the motions by working all the time to run from the guilt he carries. He has a huge heart and there isn’t anything he won’t do to help someone in need. When he first meets Blossom, he isn’t prepared for his heart to have an immediate connection to her. He doesn’t believe he is worthy of another relationship in his life after losing his first love. The slow burn to this romance is beautiful as we peel back the layers for both Blossom and Darren to truly understand and appreciate all the challenges they have faced. This really allowed them to find ways to be there for each other as they worked to heal and realize love is possible. I voluntarily read an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.
