What a fantastic addition to this series! Combining a police procedural with family drama and a little romance, On Her Watch by Melinda Leigh, is the eighth book in the Bree Taggert series. Bree has been sheriff in her home county in upstate New York for over a year and the book is set in fictional Grey’s Hollow in Randolph County. A pair of hikers find a tarp-wrapped body in the woods. When a search of the surrounding area yields two more bodies, Bree knows they’ve found a serial killer’s dumping ground. With the help of her team and civilian criminal investigator and Bree’s boyfriend, Matt Flynn, the case is worked. However, the killer is escalating and threatening Bree’s family.

Bree is smart, skilled, confident, honorable, and determined. She joined law enforcement to help people and that is what she intends to do. She has a commanding presence and utilizes common sense. She can also be stubborn and is unwilling to fully utilize media outreach to help her politically. However, she is learning to navigate the politics, media, and paperwork associated with being a sheriff in a county with a limited budget. Matt is a former sheriff’s deputy injured in the line of duty. He was going to start a K-9 training program, but his sister Cady is using the kennels for rescued dogs. Matt is a great investigator and is a master at interviewing suspects. He loves dogs, including his retired K-9, Brody. He’s also developing a mentor-type relationship with Bree’s sister’s children. Chief Deputy Tod Harvey gets some additional responsibility late in the story to continue his confidence-building.

The storyline is engaging, suspenseful, and includes some very tense scenes. The first chapter pulled me into the tale quickly and kept me rapidly turning the pages all the way to its shocking conclusion. This engrossing crime novel keeps you on the edge of your seat as the race is on to find the killer. As always, the world-building is great. The March mud season was vivid and easily immersed me in the atmosphere. I also enjoyed the few moments of humor as well as some tender moments when they occurred. Besides the investigation, readers get insight into Bree’s family dynamics and how that is changing, as well as how flu epidemics can affect small police departments. The author has weaved another installment involving family, relationships, balancing work and family, trauma, a slow-burn romance, murder, lies, domestic violence, missing persons, and much more.

Overall, this book has twists, tension, violence, and relatable main and secondary characters. If you are expecting a solid series that will have mysteries, suspense, crime, action, and a little romance, then this is a series that I recommend. Besides this one, I’ve read the seven other books and the prequel in the series. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

I purchased a copy of this novel. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. The publication date May 14, 2024. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine.

I am a proud OG Melinda Leigh fan. Her books are fun, adventurous, and easy to read. The Bree Taggert series is one of my favorites, and I plan to read it as long as the author continues writing it. Book #8 was just as good as the previous stories. I love the level of mystery, suspense, and twists. If you enjoy police/detective books and a little romance, these are worth trying! They are usually available on Kindle Unlimited, making them very affordable and accessible.

the setup…
Grey’s Hollow Sheriff Bree Taggert is wrapping up a domestic violence call when she receives word about the discovery of a dead body by a couple of hikers in a remote section of the town. As she and Matt Flynn, her investigator and life partner check, out the scene, they find another body at the site. The final body count is three, all appearing to be young women placed there at different points of time. Do they have a serial killer in their midst?

the heart of the story…
Under normal circumstances, investigating this type of crime would be a challenge for Bree’s understaffed department but they’re in the throes of a flu outbreak throughout the county, impacting every unit. I was impressed how they didn’t let this impact the case, drawing on outside resources without letting anything slide. Bree’s family situation continues to bond and solidify, including Matt who has moved in. It was a lovely aspect of the story to balance the tragic murders of these girls and the sudden disappearance of two more who seem to fit the profile and some badly behaving men in their lives.

the narration…
I enjoy Traister’s storytelling skills as she models Bree’s temperament and personality. I’ll always listen to this series as she’s now the voice in my head for the characters.

the bottom line…
The procedurals were exceptional, particularly how Bree maneuvered around the staff shortages but never sacrificing the processes. There were multiple suspects to ponder and it was essential to pay attention to the clues (beware the red herrings). The case was fascinating but I was equally drawn to the personal aspects involving Bree, her blended family and friends. Still loving this series!

After making an arrest in a domestic violence case, Sheriff Bree Taggert is notified of a body discovered by hikers in a remote area of Grey's Hollow. Bree and her civilian investigator Matt Flynn find a body wrapped in a tarp. While waiting for the forensics team, they uncover two more bodies. It looks like this is the dumping ground for a serial killer. After learning the identity of the latest victim, Bree and Matt decide to talk to her best friend. But when they arrive at Jana Rinsky's home, they find the place has been torn apart and blood has been left behind. The hunt is on for a serial killer who has already picked his next victim.

This is the 8th book in the Bree Taggert series. I'm happy to say the series is still going strong. Along with a great mystery with lots of suspects, the story touches on Matt and Bree's relationship. He has moved in so he can be close to her and her niece and nephew. You can see the family growing closer with each book. My rating: 5 Stars.

I love this series. In this book there is plenty of action, suspense buildup and a good dash of clean romance to have me hooked. But I found some of the aspects of the narrative a little repetitive, Bree questioning her role as sheriff, questioning her role as surrogate mother to her niece and nephew, and questioning her growing relationship with Matt. I love the strong supporting characters that have come to be Bree's family and the solid mystery plot. This one was very much a mystery with little to tie the victims together until Bree hits on the right clue, then it all comes together. Bree and Matt make a great team.

Two fishermen are out on a cold, wet and miserable day. When one stops to take a leak, he smells the distinctive order of decomp and he and his brother find a body. With the department ranks depleted by the flu Sheriff Bree Taggert and Civilian Investigator Matt Flynn investigate the call. Bree is coming from a domestic violence call that had her spiraling into her past. This call about a body in the woods takes her day from bad to worse.

What they discover is a killer's dumping ground, with very little evidence. When they go to interview the best friend of the latest victim, they discover her missing and blood in her home. They now have three bodies and a missing woman and fear a serial killer has taken another victim.

4 1/2-Stars

A big thank you goes out to NetGalley, Montlake Publishing and, of course, Melinda Leigh for the arc I recently read. I noticed it was available to download instantly on NetGalley (no approval necessary!) and I immediately sent it to my Kindle.

To say I love Bree, Matt, Luke, Kayla and many of the other secondary characters in this series is a no-brainer. The suspense was one of the more gruesome in Ms. Leigh's books, but Randolph County always seems to have some nasty thing occurring. This is where I had to suspend my disbelief regarding this rural area and just believe they have a higher crime rate than norm.

Influenza is making the rounds and has affected most families. There has also been no break in the rain over the past few weeks. These factors set the tone for the suspense, and it is easy to see why I empathize with Sheriff Taggert. In addition to maneuvering within the town's politics, she has a very tough job, but she still manages to care about people.

The camaraderie within Bree's household and the respect of her deputies' factors is another reason why I enjoy each story. If you are a new reader start with Cross Her Heart. Welcome to Bree's world!

This is a Police Mystery/Suspense, and this is the 8th book in the Bree Taggert series. I have not read the first seven books in this series before picking up this book, but I will be going back and reading them. This book is fast paced full of action and suspense which is everything I want in a mystery. I loved the main character, and I loved the mix of work and home life we got. The mystery of this book kept me guessing, and I felt like I was working the case with them. This was a great read. I did listen to the audiobook for this book, and I think the narrators did a great job. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.

On Her Watch was another fantastic addition to the Bree Taggert series featuring Bree's search for a serial killer.

After two hikers find a tarp-wrapped body in the woods, Sheriff Bree Taggert searches the surrounding area and finds two more bodies. Convinced they've found a serial killer's dumping ground, Bree quickly begins her investigation. Working with investigator Matt Flynn, Bree goes to interview one of the victim's best friends only to find the woman's apartment ransacked and set on fire. With another woman missing, the search for the killer has escalated and Bree needs to find the killer quickly before another woman dies.

On Her Watch opens with a young girl running away from home before the book jumps forward in time to Bree getting the call about the hikers finding a body in the woods. When Bree arrives to the scene, it doesn't take long to discover two additional bodies nearby. Serial killer cases tend to make really interesting mysteries so I was looking forward to seeing this plot play out. Also, I was curious how that opening chapter would end up being connected to the plot. Soon after Bree begins her investigation, another woman goes missing which definitely makes things more urgent as the hope is to find her alive. The case goes in several directions and I was somewhat surprised by the reveal of the killer's identity. The final confrontation with the killer was very well done with the perfect mix of action and suspense.

Bree is a great main character and she's come a long way since the first book in the series. She's much more open now and willing to let others in. Her relationship with Matt continues to be amazing. The two moved in together in the previous book and I really enjoyed the little moments we got to see of them together at home with the kids. Bree's family is threatened as a result of her investigation and I have to say that's one thing I didn't love about this book as I feel like they've been targeted so many times throughout the series. Thankfully everything works out for the better and everyone is alright.

Overall On Her Watch was a great read and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Track Her Down, when it releases next year.

2.5 rounded down.
This book did not have an overall focus and it was predictable. It spends more time assessing feelings, connections and the flu that came to town than it does on the victims and how they solved the murders.

The reader knows who and why with the obvious clues.

The specific part that bothered me is when they found blood in Jana’s apartment and went to bed instead of trying to find her.

The serial killer aspect was a let down since the connections were made to make the book work as each circumstance miraculously unfolded themselves by convenience without Bree and Matt doing any work. Bree *knew* that lady was lying without proof and she didn’t say it at the time they spoke.

During the action when the tension builds they stop and assess their feelings. I get the I love you but don’t need a full page of emotions while there’s a victim in labor!!

They calm the FBI and don’t wait.
They call the Bomb Squad … and don’t wait.

The end reason as to why? Baby Mill turns into serial killings on accident? 🤦🏻‍♀️ we find all this out in the Scooby Doo wrap up ending.

This here plus all the filler and repetition was too much. I barely wanted to finish the book. It was a sheer disappointment when it came to the mystery/solving serial killer murders.

I definitely wanted more from the book. This one is better than the last and I know I said wouldn’t read this one, but I couldn’t help myself.

Ms Leigh deserves a better publisher and better editors because she knows how to write and to endear us to living the characters and towns she creates. It’s nice to watch Bree grow as well as the family but it was distracting from solving the case. This is where I am not sure what kind of book this should be.

PS Don’t come at me if you disagree. I’m open to discussing books and respecting differences but if you want to be nasty and tell people they don’t know how to read correctly, keep scrolling. I own my opinions - which are exactly that. Opinions and not facts. This author has written amazing series before and I would love to see her shine again.

The flu is going thru Bree’s PD like wildfire along with dead bodies. 3 in one spot and 1 actually landing on the roof of the Sheriff’s car hood!
Will they catch the serial killer in time to save the latest victim life?
I have to say I was surprised by who the serial killer was! I guess desperate people do evil things!
Maybe … I see a marriage in the future for the Sheriff and Matt.

On Her Watch is book 8 in the Sheriff Bree Taggert series by Melinda Leigh. The book starts out with 2 hikers finding a dead body in the woods. Sheriff Taggert and Investigator Matt Flynn arrive and have the hikers show them where the body is. The body isn't in a place you'd find it easily as the hikers found it when looking for a place to urinate. The body is in a camouflage wrap and it's been here for awhile. While waiting for the medical examiner to arrive Bree notices something off in the distance. She lets the dog lead her to the spot and it's a piece of camouflage wrap. They've found another body, but this one is in worse shape, and has been here longer. They have found a killer's dumping site. As they let the dog look around they find one more body that was dumped a long time ago. It's just a skeleton now and was the first body dumped.

Bree and Matt don't have their entire team available as the flu is going around their office. They will have to stay most of the night until the medical examiner finishes up and the bodies are removed. Bree and Matt now live together and care for Bree's niece and nephew. Their mother, Bree's sister, died a few years ago and Bree became their guardian. Dana helps a lot as the housekeeper, baby sitter, and cook while Bree and Matt are out working. Dana and Bree were partners back in Philadelphia. Dana was ready to retire and moved with Bree to help out. She also lives at the farmhouse.

As Bree and Matt investigate the murders, more young women go missing. The clock is ticking and they need to find these women before they're killed and dumped. Who would be taking young women and killing them? Why? It seems like the killer's timeline is shortening as he's taking women at a more rapid pace. When things get too dangerous for Bree and her family she has to move the kids. The kids both have the flu and have to be home, so they must find a safe place for them. Bree's fine with threats against her with her job, but she's not taking any chances with the kids. Will Bree's team find the killer before he can dump more bodies? Will Bree and Matt be safe? This is a fantastic entry into the Bree Taggert series and I rate it 5 stars with my highest recommendation. If you've never read a book in the series this could easily be read as a standalone book as Melinda Leigh gives background info for new readers. Don't miss this fantastic book! It's available on May 14, 2024. I'd like to thank NetGalley and Montlake for an advanced copy of On Her Watch in exchange for a fair review. #OnHerWatch

“When it rains, it pours” is still a popular aphorism for a reason. In the case of the latest installment in the Bree Taggart series, this also happens to be literal. It rains all through this book and figuratively rains down a great deal for Bree to deal with from the flu in the family to a serial killer stalking the county. Eight books in and I remain riveted to each installment I read and gasping for the next one.

On Her Watch, finds Bree and Matt dealing with sick kids with the flu making its rounds. Their relationship has grown so much since meeting in the first book and Matt is there to support the family in the home and work for Bree’s department on the job.

And, the job, yick! Bree is called to the scene in the woods of a body found by hikers and this leads to other bodies also dumped there. Local politics gets into the mix and the town council tries to tell her this is NOT a serial killer when she has bodies with gruesome things done wrapped up and left in the same spot. Bree has to walk a tight rope of half her staff being out with the flu and city hall trying to dip into her investigation. And, that is on top of the killer themselves sitting up and taking notice of Bree and this endangers her and those she cares for.

Bree is one of my favorite fictional characters the way she grew from her own dark childhood and those fears, went into law enforcement, took on her orphaned nephew and nieces, and now runs a good sheriff’s office. She is a strong, independent figure, competent and caring and handles the balance of work, family, and a relationship incredibly well. But, for all that, Melinda Leigh writes her so she feels relatable and human with her vulnerabilities and struggles.

All in all, this one had a few hair-raising moments with a dangerous serial killer preying on the area and it was tense time as Bree and her team had to figure out what tied all those dead women in the killer’s mind. Those who like smart small town police procedural thrillers should not hesitate to give this series a go.

I rec'd an eARC via NetGalley to read in exchange for an honest review.

This series goes from strength to strength. Before I dive into my review I want to applaud Ms Leigh for writing a strong female protagonist who is respected by her team and has a dynamic with her male love interest that is both honest and genuine. Sometimes female leads seem to have either be a ball breaker or to have the male love interest subservient in a patronising manner. Bree Taggert is justifiably the Sheriff, she is strong but allows herself to vulnerable and is in a true working and romantic partnership with her investigator in a way that doesn’t feel forced and like she is trying to teach the world a lesson. I wish more writers were able to get this balance of a feminist lead so perfectly.

"On Her Watch" by Melinda Leigh is an absolute page-turner, deserving every bit of its 5/5 stars. Book 8 in the Bree Taggert series is a testament to Leigh's storytelling prowess, and it features an amazing dynamic between Sheriff Bree Taggert and investigator Matt Flynn.
The plot grips you from the very beginning with the discovery of a chilling crime scene in the woods. As Bree and Matt work together to unravel the mystery, their partnership shines. The chemistry and cooperation between these two characters are simply electrifying, making the story all the more engaging and addictive.

As the investigation unfolds, Leigh skillfully weaves a web of suspense and danger that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The stakes are higher than ever as the killer's actions escalate, putting Bree's family and the entire community at risk.

With each twist and turn, "On Her Watch" keeps you guessing and craving more. It's a thrilling addition to the series, and it showcases the author's ability to craft complex characters and a suspenseful, gripping plot. If you're a fan of crime thrillers and well-developed characters, this book is an absolute must-read. 5/5 stars, without a doubt! While this book could be read as a stand alone I would encourage you to start at book 1 if you are new to the series, you won’t be sorry!

Thanks to Ms Leigh, the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. The only downside to receiving this ARC is it makes the time until book 9 seem even longer. A small quibble for the opportunity to jump back into the series.

I love this series and Bree has quickly become one of my favorite characters when it comes to suspense. Each book has pulled me into her world and once more I found myself chilled by the case she found herself working on. This had a darker feel to it with a crime, and therefore crime scenes, that could have been from real life events. That’s just how realistic this author creates her stories.

The twists and turns kept me guessing and at one point I had pretty much guessed everyone and yet I had no “evidence” to support my guesses, I was just moving down the list of characters. Let me add that I do this every…single…time…I read a Bree Taggert story. And I am always surprised when all is revealed.

Added to the incredible mystery is the depth of emotion that the secondary characters bring to the page. I love watching Bree grow deeper emotionally as she deals with her job and raising her nephew and niece, making this series one of the most overall enjoyable reads I’ve experienced in a while.

Melinda Leigh, I continue to and will continue to return to read your series about Bree Taggert. I love her storyline and the way she continues to develop. Bree's always faced with new challenges, but this time around her experience felt less inter-office tense and more like "life". The station has many folks out with the flu that's making it rounds and while Bree is desperately avoiding the flu, it nonetheless finds its way into her home when the kids both come down with it. Matt has moved in and this is the first time they are both called on to handle sick kids. Watching the way these two grow together and individually is always great to read.

Meanwhile, hikers have found a body in a clearing and when Bree gets to the scene it's clear there is more than first meets the eye. One body can be considered an isolated incident, but three? It looks like Sheriff Taggert has a serial killer on her hands and although the higher ups and politicians don't want to say so, Bree's gut is telling her they have a serial killer on their hands and they are escalating.

Bottom line for me is that I am invested in this series. I anxiously await each new book and then get sad when I realize the wait for the next will be quite awhile. I'm going to be sad when the series ends, but thankfully, I think Leigh has at least one more book (if not more) to write about Bree.

Thank you so much to Montlake and NetGalley for granting me access to this title!

There’s something so comforting about this series. I love the characters and the setting and the continuation.

That being said, this was the most far fetched storyline to date. Also, what did Dana do to deserve the shaft in this one?! She got like .05% screen time and yet was the MC in the last book?! Sad 🥺.

This case seemed dramatic for drama’s sake. I think with less theatrics it could have been super impactful. I think Brea was trying to show a more humanistic side but it came across staged. I dunno, this whole book felt off in comparison to the rest of the series.

With most of her taskforce sick with the flu, Sheriff Bree Taggert is working patrol. She's just wrapping up a domestic call out when there's word of a body being found in the woods. Further investigation uncovers the remains of two more, all buried at various times. Immediately, Bree and civilian consultant/life partner Matt Flynn conclude that this clearing is the burial site of a serial killer...

Things escalate when they arrange to interview the best friend of one of the victims. Upon arrival at her residence, they find it ransacked with the tenant missing. To make things worse, the very next morning, the missing girl literally falls out of the sky, right on top of Bree's vehicle. What on earth is happening? Who's responsible? What's the link between the four victims, apart from all being young, blond females. More importantly, a single mother escaping domestic abuse has just been abducted ..

I've loved this series from the get go and book eight continues the tradition. There's just the right blend of action, suspense, domesticity and romance intertwined with accurate police procedures. Not many couples can maintain a professional relationship, let alone find an ideal home/work balance! Bree and Matt are a magic combination, working together harmoniously.

What I don't like though, is waiting months for the next book!

4.0 stars. Book 8/BreeTaggert series. Good mystery/suspense with an unusual amount of dead bodies. One too many trips to Forensics/Morgue. This was starting to get a little depressing with no leads. Glad the author always softens the intensity of these stories with the latest happenings with Sherriff Taggert's family life. But never fear, Bree with Matt and her departments help, always solves the crime. Can't wait for book #9.

I love this series—every book keeps me guessing from the very beginning, and On Her Watch is no exception. The tension never lets up as Bree and Matt race against time to stop a killer who’s getting bolder with each victim. With twists, danger, and high emotional stakes, this one had me turning pages late into the night. A solid addition to an already stellar series!

I adore this series. They can be read as standalones but reading them in order shows Bree’s growth. The crimes are always gripping and the characters are so damn lovable. Seeing a sick Kayla interact with Matt was too adorable. Bree and her whole family make the books and they add a lightness to the darkness of the murders. Bree’s personal life is always balanced beautifully with the crime aspect. The investigation kept me guessing and while I kinda worked out the motive I was surprised by the reveal which I always enjoy. The ending was as dramatic as ever and I wasn’t sure who was going to make it out.

I received a copy of the ebook via NetGalley and this is my honest review

I love to read how Bree is becoming a wonderful parent and still doing an amazing job as sheriff.
