Yesterday's Tides

Rate this book
In 1942, Evie Farrow is used to life on Ocracoke Island, where every day is the same--until the German U-boats haunting their waters begin to wreak havoc. And when special agent Sterling Bertrand is washed ashore at Evie's inn, her life is turned upside down. While Sterling's injuries keep him inn-bound for weeks, making him even more anxious about the man he's tracking, he becomes increasingly intrigued by Evie, who seems to be hiding secrets of her own.

Decades earlier, in 1914, Englishman Remington Culbreth arrives at the Ocracoke Inn for the summer, but he doesn't count on falling in love with Louisa Adair, the innkeeper's daughter. When war breaks out in Europe, and their relationship is put in jeopardy, will their love survive?

As Evie and Sterling work to track down an elusive German agent, they unravel mysteries that go back a generation. The ripples from the Great War are still rocking their lives, and it seems yesterday's tides may sweep them all into danger again today.

Bestselling and award-winning author Roseanna M. White whisks you away to two periods fraught with peril in this sweeping and romantic dual-time tale.

Yesterday's Tides is a riveting tale of love, sacrifice, and trial. Although I can't say this is my favorite book by the author (The Number of Love will probably always be my absolute favorite), this one was definitely one of my top favorites. The storyline felt the most unique of hers, and I really loved the originality. The dual time lines (one set during WW1 and the other WW2) were easy to track with and I appreciated how the author made them distinct enough for me to easily follow along with. Also, each POV was so good, and I really loved getting to see the world, their circumstances, and explore their inner thoughts through their lens. This book was poetic and beautiful, and there were some scenes that made me think of some of my favorite authors, including Amanda Dykes, which is such a big compliment. The wording and the emotional weight it brought were just perfection.

If you love history and romances that are hard fought for and hard won and characters that tug on your heartstrings, then this book is for you. I loved it and absolutely will be reading it again in the future.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for an eARC of Yesterday's Tides. A positive review was not required, only my honest opinion. All thoughts are expressly my own.

Y’all, I have been waiting for this novel for years. When I first began reading Roseanna M. White’s books back in 2016-2017, I found her blog and scoured her archives, digging up details about old stories she’d been working on. One of those was Yesterday’s Tides, a contemporary about Remington and Louisa and an inn on an island.

Suffice to say I immediately fell in love, but this story never came into fruition...until The Codebreakers series released, and one of the cryptographers in Room 40 was named Remington Culbreth.

As my younger sister once said, “I just knew, ew it, ew it.”

Yesterday’s Tides was to be reborn. Naturally, I bugged Roseanna about it until the day FINALLY arrived, and YT was on its way.

Cue my anxious anticipation for the culmination of my years of patient yearning.

To be honest, I hadn’t the foggiest notion what to expect from YT—I just knew that, despite it all, I would love it. See, I typically hate dual-time fiction (okay, not quite hate; it’s just not my favorite), but this is Roseanna M. White, y’all. And two historical timelines. And a dude named Sterling, for crying out loud! (I adore that name, FYI.)

I was right, by the way.

I loved it.

I loved it so much that I downright hated it, let’s be honest. This book had me literally feeling the panic. There was so much of that evil angsty back-and-forth and just plain good writing and all the questions and omgosh I barely survived this book.

Basically this book was just a huge slab of heartache made from tree pulp and ink.

I loved it.

Apart from the mutilation of my heart, my only “real” qualm is that IT WAS TOO SHORT. In the plot/development/characterization/romance department, that is. I had more than enough anguish, believe me. I wanted so much more of Sterling and Evie, and Louisa and Rem, and just the beautiful, sweet romance stuff...and the war-related intrigue and that situation at the end (both situations, actually, which was really the same situation in two separate timelines). I feel like we missed out on the wonder and the beauty and the intensity of it all—and to be honest? The characters were lacking some development, in my opinion. For example, I knew very well the differences between Evie and Louisa, I just had such a hard time keeping them straight regardless. And Sterling and Rem deserved so much more page time, because they were such lovely boys—men, I mean.

But technically, for me to want more of something means it was good, so there’s that.

Also, please read this in one sitting. Don’t read this over the span of three days, trust me.

If you couldn’t tell by now, I loved both timelines equally (very much a rarity, if that’s ever happened) and all four of the characters. And aaaalllll however-many of the side characters, which were SO fun and well-written! THE CAMEOS THOUGH GUYS. THE CAMEOS.

I’m a bit ashamed of myself that I missed Elsie, but in my defense, it’s been years since I read Circle of Spies, and since then I’ve read at least three hundred other books, so. *shrugs*

The cameos were easily the best part, as well as how vibrant and lovely the setting was! Of course, Roseanna wrote everything in her typical excellent fashion, including the setting. Ocracoke came to life, along with its people, and now I simply must visit! (Granted, I’ll probably visit the Scillies first, but then again, Ocracoke is a heck of a lot closer, so we’ll see. 😂)

Even though there was far too much plot for there to be any real character arcs/growth, there were some lovely themes that I know everyone will love and enjoy! Really every novel of Roseanna’s just leaves you with this beautiful feeling and appreciation for life, and I think that’s one reason why I love her work so much. I never feel depressed or ranty or confused or angry or apathetic after reading one of her books. I feel a little more inspired and in love with life, you might say, and grateful for the wonderful God who gave it to me.

Yesterday’s Tides is no exception, and it truly was worth the wait! (Even though I still want a contemporary romance from Roseanna one day. 👀)

Holy cow… I honestly struggled to think of how to write this review because it’s just so darn amazing, I had no words left after finishing it!

Yesterday’s Tides was a dual time-line with one in WW1 and one in WW2 and some of the most amazing writing for both that I’ve read in a long time. This book rose to the very top of my 2023 reads and I have a feeling it will hold its spot at number one by the end of the year.

THE SUSPENSE in this book is out of this world. The emotions that I felt and the intensity of which I was wrapped up in the lives of these characters hasn’t happened to me with a book in an incredibly long time.

If you are a fan of Roseanna’s and you’ve read even some of her other books, you are going to be in for a treat because nearly every one of her previous series shows up as an easter egg in Yesterday’s Tides.

The way both storylines intertwine and then finally overlap had me turning pages late into the night and listening to the audio book when I had to drive simply because I couldn’t put it down.

The historical insight to both time periods and some lesser known history about them both was beautiful and a touching tribute to Ocracoke and the codebreakers in Europe all at the same time.

The characters will melt your heart, make you root for them, all while being constantly thrown to the wind with the chaos and miscommunications, and crazy array of circumstances that will leave your heart shattered, only to be graciously put back together by the end of the book.

I don’t want to go into too much detail because I don’t want to spoil anything, but this book may just be my favorite of Roseanna’s. I honestly can’t tell you how special it is, words fail me. She somehow keeps coming up with ways to top her own work each time.

If you love spies, either world war, ill-fated love, and till-death-do-us-part loyalty, then you are going to ADORE this book! Go get a copy, you won’t regret it!

How do I even begin a review for this absolutely incredible book? Not much got done yesterday, I can tell you that. I read it all in one day.
We visit the Outer Banks in North Carolina several times a year and was so excited to see this took place there in Ocracoke Island, NC. I have been reading this author's books for years and she is an automatic read. I cannot resist her books. Her other books have been fabulous, I've loved them all but with this one she's totally blown it out of the water.
Taking place in two time periods, 1918 and 1942, it's always a treat to read a book taking place in multiple time periods with multiple points of view.
There is so much happening in each time period.
This historical fiction starts out in 1942 and I learned so much about this time period.
I found it fascinating to learn about the HMT Bedfordshire an armed naval ship in the service of the Royal Naval Patrol during WWII. It was sunk by the German submarine U-558 on May 11, 1942, off the coast of Ocracoke Island. It was staffed by British and Canadien crew.
Fascinating history switching between WWI era and WWII time periods the thread runs with the same family and includes not able to put it down action, heart-wrenching family drama, suspense and romance. There is a mixed-race relationship that leads to racism and discrimination which the author deals with carefully and respectfully.
I loved the book and am eagerly awaiting what this author puts out next.

I have been so excited to read Yesterday's Tides since Roseanna announced that she was working on a book that would pull in all the different characters from her previous series (though you do not need to read those series first in order to enjoy this book, but it definitely adds to the story when you see a familiar character!)

This book kept me engaged and turning the page to find out what happened next. It is a dual timeline, with four POVs that flowed seamlessly throughout the story. I was more drawn to the story and characters in the "yesterday" chapters (1914). Their stories seemed stronger and more fleshed out than the characters of "today" (1942). But the yesterday and today characters and stories were intertwined to complete one, beautiful picture of the end of forgiveness and healing.

I do wish that there had been a little more development of some of the characters. Especially Sterling. He seemed the least developed and I wasn't sure of his motives or what was really driving him. Also, the "villain" of the past timeline felt off to me. Some of the choices seemed over the top and seemed to just be there to move the plot forward. The ending also felt a little rushed and I would have liked to have seen more there. Maybe an epilogue?

Every time a character from a previous book made their appearance, I couldn't help but smile! We saw several of the characters from the Codebreakers and Shadows Over England series, and mentions of characters from the Ladies of the Manor series and even Secrets of the Isles! These little easter eggs made the book even more fun for someone who has read all of White's previous works.

The last thing I will say, I did find the faith in this book had less depth than in most of her other works. Faith is there, woven throughout each timeline. But it didn't seem as powerful as some of her other books.

Overall, an enjoyable, historical mystery. I'd give it 3.5 Stars

esterday’s Tides by Roseanna M. White was a hard story for me to follow. First, it features two different timelines: 1914 and 1941. Usually, I have no problem following these types of stories because I can follow with each individual characters and their different settings and interactions. But in White’s stories, both of the heroines and heroes did not stick out any differently to me. They were bland and boring. One of the glaring issues I had with the writing was that White would have a character look over the water, then the story went on with the thoughts of the characters for about a half a page. Descriptions of the characters took a long time and always had to relate to something. Way too much exposition in the story. Sometimes I would have to go back and see where the last important through, action, or movement was to see where the story was headed. As I kept reading, I wanted more of the “tracking down [of the] elusive German agent” that was mentioned in the synopsis. The German U-boats were an interesting concept. Something I definitely wanted to read more of, but the story does not really deliver this idea. Overall, Yesterday’s Tides by Roseanna M. White did not capture my attention. Way too much description for my taste. I needed more showing and action to the plot with characters that I could care about.

I received a complimentary copy of Yesterday’s Tides by Roseanna M. White from Bethany House Publishing, but the opinions stated are all my own.

Another wonderful story by Roseanna M White! This is the first of hers that is a dual timeline and though I typically thoroughly enjoy that genre, this one took me a little bit of time to connect with because the timelines were both historical and closer together than is typical. Due to my sporadic reading schedule, I found myself confused a bit early on. I'd say this could easily be combated by reading full chapters at a time and taking breaks with the timelines, which I didn't do. However, I say that to say that even if you do find the beginning a bit confusing, I'd encourage you to power through as once you get in to the depths, both stories fully suck you in. And because the timelines are close together and both historical, they tie up even more nicely at the end.

Both timelines take place in the Outer Banks on Ocracoke Island and the Ocracoke Inn. The "yesterday" timeline follows Louisa Adair who helps run the inn with her mother and Grann and her world is turned upside down when 2 young men show up for the summer. This story starts just before WWI and encompasses the duration of the war. The "today" timeline takes place during WWII and follows Evie Farrow whose life has hit a bit of a rut when a stranger washes up on her shore and changes everything.

Both story lines drew me in completely and all of the characters were likable and relatable. I enjoyed learning more about the wars from the viewpoint of the States and how people were impacted. The mysteries kept me turning pages, I enjoyed the romances in both timelines and the conflicts that arose within the families. I also enjoyed how Evie broke free of the family mantra at the end. There were quite a few twists and turns and surprises. I found myself angry with the author at one moment and singing her praises at the next. I enjoyed the faith thread that was solid throughout and enjoyed Evie's connection of prayers and sea glass. I'm considering doing something similar in my own life in order to keep my prayers front and center.

Fans of this author's other works will be glad to see characters from several of her previous series (Culper Ring, Ladies of the Manor, Shadows over England, and Codebreakers - as well as a small Easter Egg from the Secrets of the Isles), though if you haven't read them you won't be lost at all. This book is technically a stand-alone, but I love that she tied in several other characters that I've loved over the years. All in all, this was a wonderful book that I'd definitely recommend to fans of inspirational historical romance. Special thanks to the Publisher and NetGalley for an advance e-copy of this novel. I was under no obligation to provide a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.

I really, really liked this time slip novel. I loved trying to put the connections (other than the inn!) between Louisa and Remington, and Evie and Sterling together . . . figure out what was going on and WHY.
I loved that, especially in Louisa and Remington's part of the story, they both referred to the God they served as the God of miracles . . . Who could raise Lazarus from the dead and part the Red Sea. Those specific miracles they thought about were integral to their story, and it was a beautiful way to show trust and gratitude.
I also loved the connections made to some of the other series that Roseanna M. White has written. I LOVE it when authors 'world-build', and you can see how things connect in surprising ways.

Pretty sure I've said this in every review I've ever written of a Roseanna M. White book, but I'll say it again: I will read anything and everything she writes. I love her writing voice, I love her character depth, and I love her intricate plots and historical detail. I was equally invested in both storylines/time periods in Yesterday's Tides and as usual, she's got a way of writing romance that feels so genuine. All in all, a captivating novel!

This dual timeline novel is a masterful tale brimming with family, faith, love, loss and wartime espionage, set in Ocracoke Island, NC and London during WWI and WWII. This is a standalone story though I loved the inclusion of characters from past series. It made me want to revisit them all.

Ms. White has ventured into the dual timeline genre and has come up with a fresh way to tie the two World Wars together. You can tell she has done extensive research about the wars and the setting. Additionally, she has woven favorite characters from previous books into the fabric of the story. She meshed the two stories so well that the hinge was a complete surprise.
Historical fiction is a favorite genre and this novel was so interesting. I enjoyed learning about Ocracoke Island and its inhabitants as well as seeing what was going on in the Admiralty in England at the time.
Ms White always depicts fascinating characters with real life problems to overcome through faith. I connected with Evie and her jewelry making because I dabble in that too. She took sea glass and shells and used them as prayer tools to make something significant. “Holding on to something helped remind her that they were real things, those prayers- things with substance, just like faith.”
I thoroughly enjoyed my trip back in time on the East Coast of North Carolina. Highly recommended for fans of historical Christian Fiction.

"Because she'd always known that 'safety' was an illusion. And 'steady' too often meant stagnant. Neither was what brought life, with all its abundant, chaotic beauty."

Absolutely stunning dual timeline historical fiction. Once again, Roseanna M White masterfully and beautifully combines history, intrigue, romance, and faith to weave an unforgettable tale of secrets, loss, grief, strength, and love. The setting of Ocracoke Island is lovely and the plot that takes us from the Outer Banks to England to France is riveting.

Louisa and Rem from WWI stole my heart completely from the beginning. Their romance and steadfast love were delightful and heartbreaking at the same time. Evie and Sterling from WWII took their time to get to know each other and I truly enjoyed that journey. There were plenty of gasp-worthy surprises and plot twists to keep the book moving at a good pace. Revisiting Room 40 from The Codebreakers series was quite fun, as was cameo appearances by characters from the author's other books.

It's a must read for all historical fiction lovers. I received the book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

I have no words. Seriously speechless but heart-filled and gobsmacked and wondering what I’m going to do now that this book is over. Yesterday’s Tides (such an apt title — love when a story and title are a perfect match!) is the kind of read that you want to linger over and rush through all at the same time. I mean, I didn’t want it to end but I couldn’t wait to get to the ending!

I love Roseanna M. White’s books, but this might just be her best yet. And such a thrill to encounter some fave characters from previous series in this one! Though, no worries if you haven’t met them, it will totally make sense anyway — just gave me an extra thrill of bibliophile bliss!

And — squeeeeaaaalllll — this is a dual timeline story set in two historical eras. And the way past and ‘present’ mesh together is breathtakingly beautiful and filled with some unique twists. Two heroines. Two heroes. Two world wars. The clash of conflict over race and class. (Gah, but I was spitting-nails-furious in places!) Absolutely stunning. And unputdownable.

I listened to the audible edition expertly narrated by Pilar Witherspoon. Her performance kept me riveted through to the very last world.

I’m pretty enthusiastic about a good dual timeline. This one, I’m gushing about! The tug of war (see what I did there?) between WWI & WWII, the remote setting in the OBX where little seems to change, the deep relationships—whether by blood or by choice—between the characters, especially the women…all of it adds up to an irresistible tale of love and loss, friendship and kinship, desire and duty. The baddies in this book are REALLY bad, but the heroes come out of the woodwork to save the day!

What an amazing job White does in combining dual timelines during World War 1 and World War II in her first dual timeline novel. It's 1942 on Ocracoke Island and Evie Farrow's daily life is very repetitive until Sterling Bertrand washes ashore and is taken to to Evie's Inn to recover from his serious burns. Little does Evie know that Sterling is military and is tracking a supposed German spy who may be on the island. As Sterling and Evie work to track down the spy, their steps take them back in history to World War 1 connections to Evie's family.

As always, White's extensive research on both wars brings this read to life. Each of the timelines was easy to follow, and it was interesting to see the roles that some of the characters played in both World War I and then again in World War II. White is definitely a wordsmith as the story develops so beautifully and keeps the reader entranced. One of my favorite things in this book was that characters spoke many languages including American Sign Langauge.

This is one book that readers won't want to miss.

Favorite Quote:
“How sometimes, when it feels like the wind and the water are stealing those prayers, we can anchor them to something in our thoughts, as a reminder that no one and nothing can really snatch them away.”

Yesterday’s Tides revolves around an island you can find in North Carolina called Ocracoke and a little inn run, at different times, by different people. Roseanna M. White focuses on two time periods in the book, 1914 and 1942 and two women who live and will reside there, for that time being; also, the men who come into their lives. It’s a romance filled with love that cannot be, between the men and the women in each time period, each having their own reasons for the forbiddenness. And, while this love grows, a love that cannot ever, possibly, sustain their lifetimes, the characters struggle to share this time together, if only to end it quickly. But, will their love for one another be enough to find a way? Will their love, as the saying goes, find a way, as all love does? Will they overcome their hurdles, break down the walls that try to keep their love so brief, and stay together, for a lifetime?

In 1942 Evie Farrow ran the inn and, for the last six years, chosen to make the island her home. While each day is like the next to her, Evie has embraced and stayed on at the inn, running it the entire time. She does this rather than fight, like the rest of the world, currently at war. Resigned to make the best of things, come what may, her Grandmother See is the only one there, to help her. And, in the future, Evie does not expect anything to be much different from what it is now, all her humdrum days, all the same, from here on out.

But, the little island in North Carolina is, at the time, watching out for German U-boats. And, Evie is very aware that the war could be brought to her, disrupting her daily routine. Even though this would bring some excitement to her life this is the last thing the young woman hopes to happen because of her secret past. As stories that were told of the First World War continue to haunt the streets of Ocracoke island, all who have memories of things that happened there, remember and keep fresh the fear of things that could come from another War, if it was to happen. And, it looks like War may be coming to the world yet again.

Things were different for the inn years before, in 1914. Louisa Adair and her family run the inn, at this period in time. However, just like Evie, Louisa too, has a grandmother that lives there, with her, a wise woman who is a big part of her granddaughters' life and, actually, all those who meets. She always has a kind word and wisdom to give. And, she often, freely, does. Especially to one of the gentlemen that will be staying at the inn for the summer, coming from a rich, aristocratic family, Mr. Remington Culbreth. He is there with his cousin, from England.

When Louisa and Remington meet, he knows, at first glance, that he cannot be with her. But, that does not stop him from thinking that, not only that she is beautiful, but, more importantly, there are many special qualities the young woman has about her that draws him to her. And though Louisa has been taught to let men know she has a spine as well as a pretty face, Remington is different from the men she usually meets, unlike even his cousin, who only sees a pretty face. Though the two are curiously attracted to one another’s attributes (physical, mental, all) the fact that Louisa is dark skinned, has a darker skinned grandmother, even the fact that Louissa’s mother is fair skinned cannot make Remington’s family accept the pair, as a married couple. But, when he knows Louisa returns his affections, nothing can stop him from loving her. Right? Remington can overlook her darker skin, forget it might mean something more. Couldn’t anyone, even his family (he thinks, hopes and shares the thought with others)?

Back in 1942, Evie finds a man who washes ashore, claiming to be a secret intelligence agent who is hunting Nazi’s. While you would not think to find them on this small island, even Sterling Bertrand, himself, did not think the man who he was hunting to be here, the Agent thinks a great Nazi to be in the area, there to, in the future, signal possible U-boats and alert them to prime targets, as the island is one of many in the area. But, while Sterling may not think to find them on Ocracoke, he is sure Gustav Mansfield (the Nazi) is in the string of bigger islands nearby. Sterling did not think to wash ashore here, though, that, a complete accident of fate. For Evie, here, the mystery of Bertrand does not end here as she questions who he is, really, and now, what will be done about Nazis, if there really is one, or many. Since Evie knows the area, even though Sterling doubts her still, some of the things he does not yet know about her, the questioning things she does, the two combine and a hunt begins.

Excited for a Nazi hunt, back in 1942, as the first World War breaks out in 1914, Louisa’s dreams are made true when a letter from a teaching college arrives to tell her that she has been accepted. And, though Grann has assured Rem that he is the best man for Louisa, as he watches her with her friend Garrett, he comes to believe that this friend may in fact be the better man. But, all the thoughts and actions that have come from Rem for Louisa, rather than be with her, it is as if he is doing whatever he can to distance himself from her. As if he has already made the decision about what he is going to do yet does not have the ability to say goodbye to the woman he loves. And, rather than him having to leave her, it is as if Rem is looking for any reason for Louisa to have to leave him, rather it be fulfilling her dreams or convincing himself she is better off elsewhere with someone else.

Having said so much about Yesterday’s Tides but, having given so much away but really, not much at all, goes to show the debacle the book presents, from the very beginning until the very end. But, the nature of love is so fickle, everything changes in an instant, even over a look on a face, the swinging pendulum in these two tales, does the same with these two girls and their love stories. While I love both of the women and the lives the writer presents, the favored of the pair, for me, is most certainly Louisa Adair. What I loved and found so amazing was her ability to keep a cool head, not completely “freak out” and “fall apart” when hurdles, and walls hit her again and again. More like, I guess, a hard tide that rushes in on a beach, each wave blasting, time and time again, so hard as to knock one over. Louisa, her life is like that, and yet, she stands tall against all that wants to topple her. Such bravery in the character of Louisa, I think she, of all characters, wins that award, from me. As a reader, it seemed that Louisa had to be brave her entire life, so hard a life she was given from the start, it was and is.

In closing, I’d like to issue readers a strong warning. Carefully proceed when Louisa encounter’s her mother in law. Well, Remington’s mother, Edith, the “mother in law”, I guess you could say she has that title, in a more “figurative” sense. I apologize here but to explain it any further may ruin the book. Regardless, this woman, well, if Louisa win’s my award for bravery, Edith, however, wins the monster in law medal. She is the Queen of the monster in laws (mother in laws), in fact. For what she does in the book, all the while, still being a demanding presence in regards to some aspects of Louisa’s life. To want to take so much from Louisa, having taken so much from Louisa, it never stops. But, then Edith thinks she is a “better” person for the money she has. I must stop myself here, before I spill too much and ruin the read for others. Because this is not only a book for romance readers, historical lovers too, but also for those who desire to see discriminatory behavior quashed and ignorant people not get what they desire.

Also, in parts, they’re hunting Nazis. Don’t forget, that’s here too. Only the other storyline, Louisa’s, makes choosing between the two particularly hard. Evie and the agent who washes up ashore, find out, in reading, what happens with the Nazi’s. Do they find their man, stop him and turn him over to the Allies? To find out what happens there, too, well, you’ll have to read Yesterday’s Tides by Roseanna M. White, truly a masterful grasp of romantic suspense in this great adventure, that goes back and forth between two carefully crafted female characters, two dramatic romances and two World Wars; that stick with you long after you have finished the book and find yourself back in reality. What will both women have in the end? A full heart or a broken one? Memories they want to cherish forever or ones they hope to forget?

Happy Reading!

My favorite historical time periods are WWI and WWII so it was very exciting to have them both in one book! It did make it a little bit confusing at times to remember which story you were in since the times were close and many locations and people were the same but it didn’t detract from my enjoyment.
I loved all four of the main characters and both of the love stories. Louisa and Rem fit so perfectly together despite their differences and while I wish we could have had more page time of them together I did love their romance. And Evie and Sterling just seemed to click from the get go and I enjoyed watching them puzzle each other out and fall in love.
There was a portion of this book where someone was doing heinous things that I absolutely hated-like I was literally yelling words at the pages like the characters could hear me and do something about it. I was actively angry and it honestly lowered my enjoyment of the book for a chunk of it. I knew things would work out but the process of getting there was frustrating.
On a more positive note, I LOVED all of the tie-ins to all of Roseanna White’s other series! I didn’t even catch a couple of them but she reveals them in the note at the end! My favorites were definitely the parts with the characters from the Shadows Over England Series and The Codebreakers series!
This book was a closer nod to the Roseanna White glory days than the last several books have been and despite the hiccup in the middle the best she’s put out lately!

1914-1918 and 1942 Ocracoke Island, North Carolina

Nice blending of the two time lines. I enjoyed the WWI thread just a bit more, but both captured my interest.

Another five-star read from Roseanna M. White!

Yesterday's Tides connects World War I and World War II in an interesting story of romance and intrigue. Evie Farrow and Sterling Bertrand in 1942 and Louisa Adair and Remington Culbreth in 1914 prove to make the story so interesting, as they face the challenges of their times in different ways. Uncovering the connections between their timelines adds an appealing element of suspense to it all, and I flew through the chapters, hoping everything would work out well for these beloved characters.

I so enjoyed the experience of reading this novel; it transported me to a different time and place, and I loved every minute of it. Yesterday's Tides is a lovely and delightful read that no historical reader should skip!

“How sometimes, when it feels like the wind and the water are stealing those prayers, we can anchor them to something in our thoughts, as a reminder that no one and nothing can really snatch them away.”

I love everything I read by Roseanna M White, and this story just proved again why. There was a mystery or two to solve, a villain or two which impacted the lives of the characters and well-loved characters from prior series making an appearance.

This was the first dual-time story this author has written, and she executed it perfectly. Through Louisa and Evie, I was taken from the initial stages of the Great War to WW2, from falling in love to heartache and seeing the impact of both wars.

The author’s descriptive way with words grabbed my attention from the very first sentence. The author made me love a romance, dislike a supporting character through shocking disclosures and made me wish for happily ever after and worried that there will not be one.

And I enjoyed linking the present time with the past before the author revealed the events in the timeline of Yesterday.

Fans of Roseanna M White will not be disappointed, and if you still need to read any of her works, this will be a great book to pick up.

They say never judge a book by its cover, but this one is beautiful on the inside too. There’s history, romance, mystery, but at its core it’s a heart-wrenching family drama told by the generations affected in WWI and WWII.

Out of the four historical fiction books I read this month, this one is at the top. So many WWI & WWII books are set overseas, and I appreciated that Rosanna shed light on the hardships experienced stateside during both periods.

"Yesterday's Tides" is a Christian historical set in 1914 and 1942 on Ocracoke Island in America. Both timelines have a full story, but the mystery of the 1942 timeline was about the identity of Evie's parents. Since everyone seemed to be her grandma, aunt, or uncle (even when we knew those characters weren't related), it was sometimes difficult to sort out who was related to whom in what way. Still, you could follow the basic stories just fine.

In 1914, Louisa was poor, did the inn's handyman work, and wasn't sure if she had a black grandma. Remington's rich and visiting on a vacation, but he's intrigued by the beautiful, skilled Louisa. He knew that her ancestry and social status would make it hard for her to fit into his world, but he's attracted to her personality and character. She's also attracted to him, but his relatives will go to cruel lengths to keep them apart. As WWI begins, the war also threatens to separate loved ones.

In 1942, Evie lived in America but helped the British crack enemy codes by using the local Coast Guard telegraph for communication. When British spy Sterling survives a U-boat attack and washes up on her beach, she helped keep his secret and nurse him back to health. She agreed to help him track down an enemy spy (though they spent little time actually doing that). While Evie's willing to answer any of Sterling's questions about her life and past, he's determined to poke around instead and piece together clues until he can figure it out. When the Coast Guard brought Evie coded telegrams, he suddenly suspected her of being an enemy spy...who somehow managed to fool every local resident and Coast Guard into trusting her yet also was the Worst Spy Ever in terms of keeping her "enemy" telegram communications a secret. His belief that she was an enemy when all her actions pointed toward her being an ally made no sense.

Overall, though, the stories were suspenseful as the dangers of two World Wars and relationship tensions stressed the characters. I understood why Remington and Louisa were attracted, though Evie and Sterling seemed more like mild friends until suddenly they realized they loved each other. The characters trusted in God through difficult circumstances. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this enjoyable historical.

Wow, I think I'm in love!

This story was fanTASTIC! I've become a big fan of timeslip novels, and am usually a fan of one time period over another. Not so with this story. I loved both time lines equally!

First we meet Evie, who gives off the all-American young woman vibes in the 1940s. Her life seems the same every day but it's a life she's chosen. There seems to be a simplicity to her life as well. And then Sterling shows up, barely alive on her beach. He seems to be quite the special agent!

Then we meet Louisa in 1914. She's my kind of gal! She's more likely to pick up a "spanner" and fix an engine than sit around paining her nails. That summer one of her guests is Remington and she turns his world topsy-turvy just by being who she is!

For me, each storyline pulled me deeper and deeper in. The storylines are connected, but HOW? Are they connected in the way we hope? The author's writing kept dodging the answers and on more than one occasion I had to talk myself out of turning to the end for both timelines. Because of the unknown and not knowing how it could possibly all come together, I had a couple of very late nights reading.

There's intrigue, an awful mother-in-law, and characters from a number of other books that I adored by the author. I think this may have been my favorite part - seeing all of these familiar characters. You can 100% read this book as a standalone. There are just lots of "Easter eggs" for those of us who have read all of the other ones.

I almost forgot to mention that I think the author writes some of my favorite grandmas in her stories! Turns out there are a couple of great ones in this story as well. They give me something to aspire to as a somewhat new grandma!

I also have a deep appreciation of the author tackling the topic of mixed marriages which were looked down on for so many years. I felt like she handled it so well!

There were some surprising turn of events that happened throughout the story. Some had my heart racing and others had me FURIOUS! The author was able to pull out a LOT of emotions from me. I appreciated the author's inclusion of faith in her characters lives. They definitely relied on and turned to the Lord regularly.

Hands down, I can't recommend this book enough. If you like reading WWI and WWII era stories, you do NOT want to miss this one!

This is Historical Fiction with two different time lines. One is set during WWI and the second is set during WWII. I did like both stories but they seemed very similar. A little more diversity would have been nice.

The first half of this one was a solid 2 stars. There were too many characters who were all kind of similar and who were in similar wars, similar romances, and in the same place. Never my favorite.

Things did pick up in the last half of the book, both with story and character development. The MCs, Evie and Louisa were easy to care for. They experienced some tragedy so it made me want to reach in and pluck them from danger. I also liked the strong bonds of family. We all want family members like those.

Now I can see why this has so many 5 star reviews. It was super "sweet". I know there are readers who are drawn to that kind of thing, but tbh, that is not my thing. I like happy endings but I also need some realistic anchors. This one had the happy endings but no anchors. Even the French rescue was a trip into "fantasy land".

I can appreciate the premise of this one. Overall, it started slow, finished a little stronger than the beginning but it had too much sweetness. So 3 stars.

Roseanna White's first dual timeline story is one of my favorite of her books. I found myself thoroughly invested in both stories told from 4 different points of view. With expert plot-pacing, Ms. White has penned a seamless tale of spies and espionage, long-buried secrets, sacrifice and love. I was surprised and pleased by the connection between both stories. I found the theme of family, the ones we are born in and the ones we choose to be a common theme in several of Ms. White's books. It is family which strengthens us as we overcome the hurts of the past. Although this is a standalone novel, I adored the cameo appearances of several much-loved characters from earlier books.

Ms. Whites prose is beautiful , drawing her readers into a story, feeling each emotion.
One of my favorite quotes:
"No more hidden pieces, buried in the sand. They need to be seen. How can we ever be understood, be truly loved, if we don't show all our most important pieces?"

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher. I was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Yesterday’s Tides is one of the most amazing split-time novels I have ever read. It was so beautiful and heartbreaking and just 😭🥹💔🥰
I was swept into this beautiful story of love and sacrifice immediately. The romance, family drama, fascinating history, secrets, and mysteries kept me eagerly turning pages a-lot later into the night than I should have. I’m a little sleep deprived today but it was 100% worth it. 😂
The characters were so fun to follow. I loved watching their stories unfold. The split time stories flowed so beautifully and it was just *fangirls unintelligibly*🤌🥹🥰😭
Roseanna has become one of my auto buy others. I love her writing style and the way she draws her reader in.
I definitely highly recommend this book!!
