MUTTS is a photographic celebration of mystery mixed breeds. If you've ever loved a bonafide mutt, you know that they're some of the best, most loyal dogs ever. MUTTS features more than 100 really cute pups from all different origins and breeds, photographed by Olivia Grey Pritchard. Each photo is accompanied by the pooch's name, best guess of breed mix, and lists unique traits. MUTTS aims to inspire joy and connection when readers look through these photographs. And for people who haven't considered adopting a rescue pet before, this book shows that mutts have just as many unique, lovable, and desirable qualities as pedigreed dogs. Olivia’s mission with this book is to call attention to the heartbreaking and chilling fact that according to the ASPCA, over half a million dogs are euthanized in US shelters each year, and to encourage more rescue adoptions. In addition to hopefully fostering more love for mutts, a portion of the proceeds from the book are being donated to organizations that rescue and spay/neuter, including Take Paws Rescue, Animal Rescue New Orleans, Zeus' Place, Greta's Ark Animal Rescue, Trampled Rose Rescue, and the LASPCA.
When the email came in announcing Mutts as an upcoming tour, I couldn’t get to the reply button fast enough! I so wanted to get my hands on this book having loved animals, especially dogs, all my life.
Last month our oldest dog got really sick and within 36 hours he couldn’t use his legs or hold his head up. We had to make the awful decision to put him down when the Vet announced he had cancer and nothing could be done. It seemingly came out of nowhere. My kids and I were a mess about it. Now, a month later, we try to think about all the happy times we had with our little Charlie but we can still be brought to tears with the right picture or story.
It’s amazing how much dogs become part of the family and the huge while they leave. Our other 2 dogs are getting all our love now and we will always miss Charles.
Did you know that approximately 670,000 dogs are euthanized each year in the US? And an even higher number of cats? It’s heartbreaking and so frustrating! It doesn’t have to be this way if owners were more responsible.
The Introduction in Mutts describes this statistic and also states a portion of the proceeds from Mutts will be donated to 7 rescue centers close to the author in New Orleans. I love that!
I also love that the author states the main reason behind her book is to show people the wonderfully amazing cuteness and lovely/quirky traits that make each dog unique.
Rescuing an animal not only saves their life, but also saves the life of another dog/cat that can now use that empty space at the shelter!! Every rescue is in dire need for support through adoption, donations even fostering. Anything that we can do will help to save so many lives.
Mutts is a beautiful book that deserves a space on your table. The beautiful white space features each photo as a piece of art. The fantastic photos of each dog make you want to start talking to them in that high pitch voice like they are a little baby. The little feature for each dog describes something quirky and cute about them to show people that every dog is worth saving. And the quality of the hardcover and this pages make this an amazingly high quality gift option.
This book came at the perfect time for my family and yes, it brought tears as my kids and I spent time looking through all the pictures. The good news? We are going to adopt a new dog for our family and are starting to look at our local shelters!
If you have a puppers at home- give them lots of love and please have them spayed or neutered. If you can, please consider adopting, fostering or donating to your local rescue shelters. And if you’re interested in a great gift for someone or even a beautiful new book for your home, I hope you choose this one.
Thank you to #booksforwardpr for having me on the tour for this beautiful and important book!!
--- Full disclosure: I received this book for free from Goodreads. ---
I adore this book. A celebration of the best creatures on the planet, mixed breed dogs. The photography is excellent, and there are brief introductions to the pictured dogs. The only way it could be better would be if I could reach through and give all these lovely doggos a bone. This is a guaranteed to make you smile book.
Mutts is a large book with beautiful images of all types of dogs and a short introduction to each. As the book notes on the cover, it is A Celebration of Mystery Mixed Breeds.
On one side of the opened book is a picture of the huggable mutt, and on the opposite side are the dog’s name and best guess of breed mix, as well as one fun, interesting trait about the dog.
I’m sure the author had various reasons for creating this well-constructed book that screams to find a place on your coffee table, but in her Introduction, she mentions an important fact:
Approximately 670,000 dogs are euthanized in U>S> shelters each year (ASPCA). So, in addition to fostering more love for mutts, a portion of the proceeds from this book will be donated to organizations who rescue and spay/neuter, locally that include Take Paws Rescue, Animal Rescue New Orleans, Zeus’ Place, Greta’s Ark Animal Rescue, Trampled Rose Rescue and the LASPCA.
Introduction, page 5 These pages celebrate mutts with gorgeous pictures of man’s best friend. Or in today’s world, we might say everyone’s best friend.
WARNING: Be prepared to run out and adopt a special mutt after viewing these pages.
My Concerns I would love to have seen more information about each dog. For example, when the guessed breed of each dog is listed, I wish there had been a small picture of those pure breeds so that I could have compared them with the “mutt.”
As it stands, it’s a lovely book but full of lots of white space.
Final Thoughts This is a large, beautifully constructed book that should appeal to all dog lovers. Even the endpaper was well thought out. As I shut the book I still had cute dogs on my mind.
My thanks to #booksforwardpr and the publisher for a copy of this book and the ability to post my thoughts without any stipulations.
Yall. This combines two of my absolute favorite things - fun coffee table books and puppies. This book is so simple and such a perfect fun coffee table book either for you or for your friends and family! I so enjoyed flipping through and seeing these sweet dogs and their fun bios. (Swipe to see an example of the beautiful photography and one of my favorite doggie bios.) I was so lucky to receive a copy of this book from Books Forward, and I cannot wait to show it to everyone who visits my home! When my husband saw me open it, he said, "Oh that's so cool." That's a ringing endorsement coming from him! He doesn't have quite the same love of books that I do. Go ahead and order a copy for you and a copy for about 5 of your friends. #bookstagram #RebeccaReviewedIt
MUTTS is a beautiful conglomeration of images that tell a story, images that capture what it means to love a four legged friend. It is an ode to the best of man's best friends: Mutts, Mixes, Shelter dogs, and strays.
This is a must have for any rescue owner. Turning these pages and seeing these pups smiling faces will remind you of the joy that is in the world in dog form, but be careful, this book has the ability to bring even more Mutts into your life. You'll want to go out and adopt as soon as you finish reading!
In 𝗠𝗨𝗧𝗧𝗦, Olivia Grey Pritchard makes you fall in love with dogs all over again as she celebrates the mystery of mixed breeds. Pritchard knows there’s no such thing as a good dog or breed of dog, but there are lovable and loyal dogs that all people should have a connection to. And mixed breeds/mutts should have the right to end up in homes to feel that connection, too, so this books serves as the visual joy of what that looks like. According to ASPCA, “approximately 670,000 dogs are euthanized in U.S. shelter each year.” Therefore, rescuing mutts is not only a way to give love and connection, but it saves a dog’s life.
My first dogs as a child were mutts. His name was Max and he was a Lab mix. I was so very attached to him and then we later got him a “girlfriend” and her name was Maxi. She was another lab mix. Max died and was hit by a car when he was three years old and it devastated me, but I do remember the good times. He was fun, playful, and very smart. I didn’t care that Max wasn’t pedigreed. I just loved my dog and that he loved me. I think that’s all anybody cares about when they get a dog.
My favorite thing about this collection are the photos, with the names headlined, and the fun personality/trait written about them. As soon I received this book, I finished it in one sitting. It took me perhaps 30 minutes to go through the entire collection. There’s also an index with information about each pet and their origin story. This is a wonderful book for pet lovers.
Pritchard reminds us, “Dogs are a study in forgiveness, in letting go of the past, and living in the moment. We can all learn from them.” I’ve learned to love a bit harder from my furry friends. What about you?
This one hits book retailers on September 20th. Make sure to get your paws on this one.
One of my best gifts at Christmas this year!! Pages of beautifully photographed dogs, each with a funny tag line. Don't miss reading their stories in the back. A great book for any dog lover and all proceeds go to a rescue in Louisiana. This will be one of my forever favorite books.
