Looking back at this book, I see it as more of an experience than any other poetry collection I’ve read. I couldn’t even tell you if the poetry was amazing or not. I was too distracted by the gorgeous layout. This collection is pages of art and poetry and it really captured such an essence of the writer. The art was absolutely stunning.

I got an ARC of this book, and I must say it really struck a cord with me. It's good to get validation that you aren't alone in your feelings, to know someone somewhere knows what it's like to give and get less than nothing in return. As women, we're taught to prioritise other things and people over ourselves. That drawing boundaries make us stuck up, or a bitxh or mean or a myriad of other names they call us, just because we say no.

I've never been one for poetry, but I'm honoured the author shared her work with me.

I felt like not only did I see her.....but she saw me too.

And that is powerful.

We need more work like this.

“Embracing the Tempest” by D.A. Andrews is a poetry collection about someone’s journey. In it we get their struggles, their lessons, their hopes, regrets and dreams. Everything that makes them truly alive. From the courageous honesty of “I AM LEARNING NOT TO DEFINE MYSELF BY WHAT HAPPENED TO ME” about their traumatic experience with sexual assault to my favorite piece about the desire for a child. We get the picture of a soul that has risen through adversity and came out stronger.

My favorite line I think defines the book best:

I’ll be damned if anyone ever
silences me again

Embracing the Tempest by D A Andrews is a poetry book created with the intention that you may adventure within to find happiness and alignment, and discover the confidence and courage to shine bright! This glorious poetry inspires inner strength, compassion and courage. The raw poems embrace life's challenges and the beauty beyond our conscious mind. Poetry to awaken the illuminated our spiritual mind and love that is all pervading, ever present and resides within you. Poetry that floats into the astral realms looking for love, relationships and life purpose. Bringing home connection, humility, compassion, career, body, emotions, happiness and eternal love.

This poetry book is especially great for conscious people, who wish to embrace themselves and shine bright as can be!
The objective of this little poetry book is to help us turn within and light up the inner lamp by deepening our faith and hope in relationships, familial grief, the heavy weight of expectations, what it means to come into oneself, emotions, spirituality, Love and Universe.

Highly Recommended!

I went into this book expecting to read poetry and possibly save some for the future to read again, what I got was a whole experience.

D. A. Andrews took a pen and scribbled out a window into her soul and the reader gets to take a peek inside. This book was a mix of poetry, self-help, and a personal diary. As a nosey person, I really enjoy getting insight into other people’s lives and understanding where they come from and why they are the way they are. It is like picking up clues and putting them together to form a beautiful piece, even if there are some cracks and missing pieces. I always believe those are the most impressive because it shows what a person has survived and endured to make them who they are now.

She takes the reader on a journey through her mind, heart, and culture. She explains what some Jamaican phrases mean and more about what is valued to her family above everything else. We get insight into her family life, both growing up and a small sliver of where they are now.

While reading, I just knew the author was older, maybe in her 40’s, just trying to give advice to others or show others that it is okay to fail and get back up again. It is okay to “live in the grey” and “cry in your closet”, as long as you don’t stay there. I was surprised to see the author is not even 30 yet! She has an old soul and has a lot of wisdom and life to share with others already.

She wrote of her past relationships and explored the way she was treated. This is where I think a lot of people can relate to her and her journey. I feel we have all experienced heartache, pain, lies, and trauma from intimate relationships and I had a visceral reaction to a few of the poems. I wasn’t expecting it but I sat there with it and went through those emotions with the author.

We see her for her. We see her mistakes, her understandings, and her acceptance of things. We see she is working through her issues but also see the how and why she understands the world the way she does.

The book itself is gorgeous. The colors are tranquil and soothing to the soul while reading. The tarot cards and different designs in the print are eye catching and they made me happy. It is also short and will take no time at all to read through them but can be read again when needing someone else to relate to when you are in a dark place. It’s a beautiful piece of art to have on your bookshelf and to be able to admire for years to come.

Pros:
The beautiful art and colors
The soul deep insight into the author. It’s vulnerable, real, and very brave to put out there to others to read.

Cons
I wanted more of her story.
Lessons I took away; Live in the grey, black and white can be exhausting. It’s okay to cry in a closet, sometimes people need a good cry.

I've been a fan of D.A. Andrews ever since I read her first collection, To Fight Fire With Sun, and this second collection does not disappoint. In this collection, Andrews opens her heart and invites us inside, takes our hand and shows us the lessons she's learned, in hopes of imparting some of the wisdom they've granted her. Y'all- there is so much gentle communion to be found in this book.

My favorite pieces were "Lesson #453," "Elaine," "Christmas Dinner," and "It comes in Waves"
"In Depression's Arms" also really resonated with me

Also, the illustrations? the artwork? the whole layout of the book?
