Absolutely awful. This was a gag gift from a friend, because we'd seen the infamous "dick attack" bit. I never read this genre for a reason, so I went in with low expectations. The male characters were all incredibly chauvinistic, the women were merely fleshlights in dresses, and the writing reminded me very much of that of a middle school student's. I know this is supposed to be a trashy, light hearted romp not meant to be taken seriously, but I found nothing to enjoy about this. Two lines in the entire book made me crack a smile and laugh out loud (dick attack and dick heaven, respectively). There is a scene in which Hilda tells Max to NOT touch her, is very adamant on this, but he ignores her and ties her up and has sex with her. It's okay, it's only light bondage, and she has multiple orgasms, right? Never mind that she said no, struggled, protested and was still upset after they're done. But they love each other, so fuck me, right?

Thanks Sandra Hill, you're contributing to rape culture and perpetuating negative stereotypes for both genders. You certainly are a pioneer.

I heard this was the worst romance ever written so I found an ebook on scribd to check. I lasted all of ten minutes in this thing. It’s bad, very bad. It’s basically a bunch of soldiers who find a tribe of women who’ve never seen men or experienced sex of any kind. These men introduce them to their own bodies and lie to them and coerce them into sex. Coerce is a mild word, it’s dubious at best, non consensual at worst.

Here are a few quotes:

“He tapped lightly on the bathroom door. “You in there, Hildy?”

No answer. He opened the door a crack...and almost had a heart attack...or a dick attack.

AND

Why are you frowning?”

“Because I can’t find it.”

I am almost afraid to ask. “Find what?”

“My clete, you dolt.”

Clete? Clete? Oh, my God! She means her clit. His you-know-what stood up and practically waved yoo-hoo. “I could help you find it.”

AND

Hilda was probably climaxing, but who could tell with all that was going on down there. He collapsed on top of Hilda, who looked poleaxed as she stared at the two of them in the mirror, her a sandwich between him and the tile floor.

This is all from one scene. I honestly couldn’t read any more. It was not good. I’m not rating because I only opened it to see how bad it was so it’s not really sporting.
But for real, if you can find a copy and want a laugh.

Dear everyone posting/who has read the 'excerpt' from the book (you know the one),

It's not actually from the book. Yes, it's hilarious and well done to whoever wrote it, but I was suspicious so I did a little googling.

From the author herself:
I’m not sure who you people are, but before you mock something, make sure you know what you’re talking about. That “excerpt” that was presumably taken from my book is in fact NOT an excerpt. Check page 222 of ROUGH AND READY and you will see that someone is having fun with you, putting in their own purple prose. I don’t mind constructive criticism, but this borders on libel. If you really care about accuracy, email me, and I” send you a copy of the correct paragraphs.
-- source

Note: I haven't read the book, or any of the authors other works (I hadn't even heard of her until finding 'the excerpt' doing the internet rounds); I just think it's good to keep GR well informed.

I too read this book as a joke for a "crappy book club" my friends and I started, we had read the "Dick Attack" passage and laughed until we cried so this seemed like a great candidate. This book was beyond "crappy", I have never read anything in the romance novel genre before but it was hard to believe that any woman would right such a sexist book. Believe me, I am no feminist, but chauvinist doesn't even begin to describe the main character. The main character and his Navy SEAL buddies proceed to tell a group of women who have suffered at the hands of the bad guy that the only reason why they are feminists is because they haven't had good sex. The icing on the cake is the not 1 but 2 rape scenes. The first where the main female character says NO repeatedly, but he has sex with her anyway and then tells her she deserved it for wearing sexy clothing and then the other where she says no aloud but in italics says (Yes, I hope he has sex with me again!). Seriously?!

I love Sandra Hill books as they are always funny, steamy and most often includes a romance that is surprisingly real despite the far-fetched plot of her books. Rough and Ready is a great example of her writing at its best. I described this book to my husband as a mans fantasy sex story written from a comedy point of view, and a romance tossed in that melts the heart (as well as the bones!) This story was laugh-out-loud funny, very hot (OMG steaming fun scenes!), and it had a lot of heart. I was really ruiting for this couple, and felt they got a perfect story. If you can deal with the unbelievable, i.e. time-travel and other farces, and enjoy a good dose of naughty humor, Sandra Hill is your author to read.

If you're reading this review you're probably aware of the ridiculous sex scene that has been reproduced many times, and is the height of hilarity. I had heard that the material was a fraud, and I'm highly disappointed to find it is indeed false. Whether people think its true and enjoy the falsity or whether people are making the joke without caring, is unclear.

While Hill's Rough and Ready is a ridiculous romp with fairly silly sex scenes, the most cray-cray term is "dick-attack" which was pretty funny in the context of the MC getting a sexy sexy shock.

What a world we live in where I wish that Rough and Read was as crazy terrible as the internet meme, now I feel mildly bad that the book is getting attributed the material.

As always my last review for the year is pretty silly! looking forwards to 2018

2020 bk 51. I think this one is my favorite of the series (after #3). In this a SEAL team travels back in time to help destroy a madman, help train a group of women to defend their sanctuary for women who have suffered, and meet up with the cousins of Torolf Magnussen. The plotting is among the best of the books - and it doesn't just end in medieval Norway - but continues as one of the women is sucked into the future when the SEAL team returns. Such fun and games.

I got this book expecting it to be awful. It exceeded my expectations.
I cant believe this is a real book. Its existence asks so many questions: it's so incredibly chauvinistic, was it really written by a woman? there are plenty of basic editing errors, who published it? and why?
This was so bad that it was very entertaining. The writing is bad, the plot is bad, the characters are bad. This book is so vile that most all books seem wonderful in comparison. And thats why I read this shitshow lol.

Torolf Magnusson was not amused. Talking to his sister Kirstin, who was a Ph.D scholar of ancient studies, she had asked him a what-if question about traveling back in time. She then showed him some of the lost pages from The Old Norse Chronicles and a chill ran up Torolf’s spine. Someone had to stop the madness in Norway and Max was up for the job. Of course, his team mates did not want him to go by himself, so they were now on a longboat, a reproduction of a Viking dragonship in Norway. This was definitely a tourist trap, but then, the unimaginable happened… they crashed.

Torolf Magnusson (Max) was a Lieutenant in the Navy, one fifth of the Force Squad SEAL Team. Other members are Petty Officer Justin “Cage” LeBlanc, a Cajun from Louisiana, Lieutenant (J.G) Zach “Pretty Boy” Floyd, an ex-race car driver, Lieutenant (J.G.) Jacob Mendoza (JAM) an ex-Jesuit priest (yeah, you read that right) and finally Ensign Merrill “Geek” Good, a computer prodigy, the only Naval Academy graduate of the five of them. It was hard for Max to explain to the guys that he had to travel back to the eleventh-century Norselands to kill a terrorist named Steinolf. Just how do you time-travel? Then he explained that he had time traveled to California along with some of his family and these guys accepted what he said. How’s that for trust of your fellow man?

Brunhilda (Hilda) Berdottir had a broken arm, blackened eye and bruises all over her body but she trudged on to find the hunting lodge, Deer Haven which was promptly renamed, The Sanctuary. She had five other women with her who had also been beaten, and some, had even been raped. All thanks to the terrorist of that time, Steinolf. They vowed their revenge, but could these women take revenge by themselves? Or do the SEALS come to their rescue, from the future? As the women had sworn off men five years ago, would Viking Max and the other SEALS be accepted or rejected? When Torolf introduces himself to Hilda, she tells him “that dunderhead is dead”. He convinces her he is not, then her dog, Stig begins to hump his leg.

ROUGH AND READY is one of the best of Sandra Hill’s fabulous stories. The dialog between the men and women is amazing and hilarious. Sandra once again pens one of the funniest, sexiest Viking time-travel stories, in ROUGH AND READY. I would absolutely love to just sit with her and listen to her ideas for a weekend. She has to be an absolute riot to be around. The dialect in this book will have you laughing out loud. You can almost see the characters as their descriptions are so vivid. I burst out loud laughing so hard when the women wanted men “with seeds in their pods”.

If you haven’t read Sandra Hill novels before, please start with this one and then do as I’ve done and try and find all the rest. My absolute favorites are the Cajun Series (just read THE LOVE POTION) and Tee John is in PINK JINX which came out in November.

2.5 stars rounded up.

I love Sandra Hill; she's one of my autobuys. As a rule I prefer her "Vikings I" (tends to focus on the historical genre) series to her "Vikings II" (a Viking time-travel/Navy SEAL action romance)series, but she's generally a light, fun read.

"Rough and Ready" was a great, well-developed storyline with lots of comedy, ridiculous and not-so-ridiculous villains, and simmering romantic leads. With that said, I didn't like it as much as I like most of Hill's work. The novel suffers Excessive Character Syndrome and plot fracture.

Although I admired Hilda, the novel's heroine, I felt Hill didn't write convincingly about Hilda's work or portray Hilda as a credible example of a manager for a women's shelter (or sanctuary, as it is called back in the 9th century.)

I remember when I could really laugh at Hill for being outrageous and funny. Her more recent works rely heavily on negative stereotypes of different races, cultures, and socioeconomic status. Examples: all Arabs are sinister or potential terrorists; the women seeking aid are always battered wives/girlfriends of lower socioeconomic status.

The worst stereotype, though, is obviously intended to be complimentary. Justin "Cage" Le Blanc, a recurrent secondary character in the series, is Hill's attempt to portray a Cajun character. I get the feeling Cage is supposed to be a combination of Justin Wilson, Gambit (from the X-Men) and Remy McSwain ("The Big Easy.") I'm doubtful Hill has ever met any real life Cajuns or done even moderate research into Cajun culture. Cage is a SEAL, a sexy playboy type when he's not busy saving the U.S. from (always Arab)terrorists. He offers a never-ending spiel of Cajun-esque proverbs about what his "maw-maw always says."

I'd like to see a little more substance to Hill's character development. If she's going to borrow other cultures to enrich her stories, she should exhibit some responsibility to that end.

Another great book in the crazy viking world that Hill has set up. Torolf has done something his family before his couldn't, he finds a way back to the time he left. Hid goal for going back, to kill the man that terrorized his sister and all the people that lived in the land he left behind. The crazy thing that happens when he goes back is that some of his SEAL buddies go with him. They think he is putting on a joke, but as time passes they realize just what is going on. Torolf is surprised by a childhood friend when he gets back, a girl who was just a child he teased. Hildy escaped from the same man years earlier and took all the women he brutalized and created a sanctuary for them to live and hide.

Hildy's sedate life is turned around when the women demand that they need men, this surprises Hilda as most of them suffered horribly in the past, but the explanation was simple, they wanted children. It seems like thier wish has been granted when Torolf suddenly appears with his friends.

At this point there is all sorts of craziness that happens, misunderstandings between old viking words and normal now words, along with one of the women instructing the others on how to flirt, which had me laughing hard.

Things get even more crazy when the SEALS and Hildy come back to present time and she gets to experience modern day life complete with a trip to an adult store.

These books are always great for a laugh while reading fun sexy stories with craziness as the norm and I can't wait to see what happens next!!

Lt. Torolf Magnusson, a Navy SEAL, has unfinished business back in the time of the Vikings. His family was torn from the past and transported to the future, but not before they were subjected to the inhumane treatment of a barbarian tyrant. Torolf wants to travel back to his old homeland and get revenge for himself and his family, but he does not factor in his SEAL team buddies and their loyalty to his cause. Nor does he take into account the people he had left behind, specifically his childhood friend Hilda, and how she would feel about his return. Romance and adventure abound in this time traveling adventure.

Historically, this book was interesting, with lots of Norse references, as well as military practices, as the main character is in the Navy. Sadly, this is where my interest stopped. The storyline itself was far too drawn out, as it seemed to pack two different stories in to one book, with both a story in the past and in the present. Even with the storyline being what it was, I could not get attached to the main characters Torolf and Hilda. They were flat, one dimensional and not at all endearing - in fact, I was more interested in the other SEAL buddies story’s than I was in Torolf’s. Lastly, there was at least one sex scene that was not consensual, which for a romance writer who should be an expert in these scenes, that made me want to put the book down and not pick it up again.

If you’re interested in time traveling Navy SEAL historical romances, this book may be for you, but I would not recommend it.

The meme that goes around every so often with hilarious passages claiming to be from this book is fake; those things ("galloping abs"; "entered her like she was a lottery"; etc.) aren't anywhere to be found in this book. On one hand I do feel sort of bad for Sandra Hill, who seems like a perfectly nice and serious lady who doesn't deserve to have her writing turned into a joke, but on the other hand... the book isn't great. It probably would've been better were the galloping abs actually present.

I couldn't finish it. I think the author must have thought "hmmm, what's popular in romantic fiction? Navy Seals, time travel, historic romance... Why don't I put them all together." Or, she had a bet going with her publisher on how many people would be crazy enough to read it! This book was awful!

Got to love the Vikings coming to modern day America. Sandra Hill never disappoints in her humorous take on the time traveling Vikings. This is #6 in a series of a family from the 10th century who travel to the West Coast 'magically'. Fun book to read.

Please read anything else. The sex scenes are so bad and the plot makes no sense and is poorly executed.
I had the unfortunate misconception that the "galloping abs" dramatic reading was legitimate, so I got the book as a gag gift for myself and two friends a few years ago because of how much the dramatic reading made us laugh. The other day I decided to finally read it, and I wish I never had. Hindsight truly is 20/20. The galloping abs, sadly, made no appearance, so I wasted some of my hard-earned reading time on 315 pages of some of the worst writing I have ever read. The only reason I didn't DNF was because I thought, eventually, I would get the galloping abs which I obviously didn't.
I admit there were a few parts where the writing was acceptable and there were attempts at being progressive, but the characters didn't fail to revert back to being terrible people controlled by lust confused for love.
There were a few rape scenes: MC doesn't listen to her telling him to stop and he justifies it because she received physical pleasure.
Also glorifies war and terrorism, but it's okay because they are US Navy SEALs! There is mention of a woman being forced by her husband to go out with a suicide bomb vest and the man had three wives so they joke and laugh that he sent the older, homely one instead of the two younger ones. Legitimately such terrible behavior.
A book I thought was going to be the best worst book I have ever read ended up being the worst worst book I have ever read. I wish I had let the book sit forever unread on my shelf and let myself imagine what it entailed. The reality was just so much worse. Please never read it.

Do you want a book that makes no real sense? No actual forms of consent? No plot? Then this is the book for you!!

Various times in this book Hilda tells Torlof that she wants him to stop and he does not he just goes on with his actions and acts like there was nothing wrong with the actions.

Also, there was a lot of points where Hill could have just ended the book and been done with it but it kept going. 300+ pages of non-sense. Does she get paid by the page? I hope so because that's the only way that would make sense.

There was no emotional attachment to any of these characters for me, it wasn't a good story at all. This is clearly made for people who are older and don't care about boundaries or are stuck in the early 2000s.

I’m honestly disappointed in how many readers missed the blatant satire in this book. The cover literally has blurbs about how funny the book and the author are. If this were meant to be taken seriously as a romance novel, of course it would be a disaster—but that’s the whole point. It’s a parody of the romance genre, and as someone who genuinely loves reading romance, I found it laugh-out-loud hilarious. While it’s not a perfect book, I’m giving it 5 stars because poor reading comprehension has unfairly lowered its rating.

I have read all of Sandra Hill's Viking books up to this one. Hildy was the bitch of all bitches. She was the most ungrateful. I couldn't like her even a little bit. Loved the seals just like always. This book is garbage and all the women from start to finish are raped. The main character Torolf, or should I say Trollof, is a jackass that can only think about sex and confuses that with love. Our heroine Hilda deserves much better as all she does is sacrifice everything for the men around her. Don’t read this book.
