Fifteen years ago, I was called to reap her soul. Instead, I took her abusers. I was sent away for it—for protecting her. For saving her.
But now I’m back.
A part of me hates her for making me get sent away, but a bigger part of me can’t shake this connection I feel to her.
Reapers aren’t meant to have souls. We lose them when we die. But why does it feel like my soul is connected to hers? Why does it feel like she was made specifically for me? And why do I want to keep her tethered to me for eternity?
She’s reckless and puts herself in dangerous situations, and I should be pissed at her for constantly playing with Death. But I’m not.
I’m obsessed with her.
RAVEN
Fifteen years ago, he saved me. I was supposed to die that night, but he took my stepfather instead. I spent the next decade and a half flirting with Death to see him again. I want to die, not because I hate my life—quite the opposite—but because I need him.
I need Grim.
It’s not until I start getting black roses left on my doorstep by a stalker that I start to wonder if I shouldn’t have been so reckless with my life. If maybe I should have been more careful about the men I let into my apartment.
It’s too late now, though. Because my stalker is escalating, and with a serial killer on the loose, maybe I’ll finally get to see Grim again.
This book contains material some readers might find upsetting: CNC/dub-con, death of a parent (mentioned, not shown), asphyxiation kink, somnophilia kink, choking, degradation, praise, mask kink, spit kink, impact play/slapping, DP, stalking, attempted suicide/talk of suicide, murder/death, child abuse (mentioned, briefly shown), bondage, violence, some gore.
Hi, I'm Haley Tyler, a dark romance author from Texas!
I’m the one behind the gritty Salvatore Brotherhood MC series and the dark paranormal romance Calling on the Reaper. My stories are filled with characters you love to hate and plots that twist and turn when you least expect it.
I’ve been telling stories my whole life, but I officially became a published author in 2021 with my debut novel, Killing Calm (book 1 in the SBMC series!). Since then, I’ve been living and breathing my dark, twisted worlds.
When I’m not writing, you can catch me listening to Taylor Swift or heavy metal (because there’s no in-between), binge-watching the latest TV series, or diving into a good romance novel.
If you’re looking for your next dark romance obsession, you’ve found it. Welcome to my world!
Grim is a reaper he’s been doing this job for years and he has no problems until one night when he witness Lil Raven being beaten and her soul is the one to be reaped. But he couldn’t do it he showed himself and saved her and it cost him. He’s been on lock down for 15 years and now he’s free and alittle angry at Raven who has been trying to chase death so he thinks all he did was for nothing. The tension is high for him but he’s still drawn to her watching her seeing her at her happiest to her lowest. He does show himself when he sees her trying to kill herself and he has enough. Trying to stay away didn’t help now he’s showing her him but a different name since she doesn’t know his face. Mason is what she gets he can be as rough with her and be around her, as for Raven she loves every second with Mason her one night stand guy but the more she talks to him the more she bonds until she being stalked and there’s a killer on the loose, Things turn a dark turn when the killer sets his eyes on her.
Pain, drama and reborn that’s what’s happens between the two, I won’t give more because there is a big spoiler on what happens. But you won’t regret it. I don’t know how to explain the ending… so I’m keep it blank.. if you wanna know dm me
The SPICE LORDDDD!!!! that scene where grim is secretly watching her as she chokes herself and rides a dildo lord that was hottt!!
I really wanna see what happens to the best friend and the brother..
Low angst, Om drama, slight secondary chars, Drama, sexy times, no virgins (Raven sleeps around off page and Grim knows but doesn’t do nothing since she can’t see him)

This is so incoherent. The first like half-ish of this story, I totally was down with it. I liked the direction and it made sense to me. 2 fucked up characters who are obsessed with each other and have a slightly unhealthy relationship because of it. There’s an identity porn aspect to it, there’s some nice hurt comfort. I saw the potential but none of that is expanded on….
It all gets ruined at around the halfway point where it just becomes really gross and abusive to me. He threatens to knock her teeth out and seems completely serious about it. There’s no discussion of what is okay and not okay at any point. Not even an allusion to it. He just does what he wants and it’s okay because she liked it in the end. That’s not my jam. It also sucks because it seemed like he was getting some character growth. Only to just watch it slip down the drain.
The plot also goes off the rails after that part. There’s absolutely no world building or pertinent details about things. Raven never gets any details about how the Reaper world works on page, and we the readers ALSO don’t get any explanation. They wear masks but why does that matter? They carry scythes apparently but it’s barely mentioned at all and you don’t get any reason for what it’s for. There’s apparently some type of leadership but like what do they do?
It all just seemed like it was not well thought through at all. And it doesn’t make any sense the direction the story went in.
I swear, Haley never fails to suck me in with her books. Each one I read gets better and better, and now I have so many book boyfriends all trying to battle it out for the number 1 spot lol.
Calling On The Reaper is one of my top reads this year! It is the perfect balance of mysterious, dark, SMUTTY, and good plot. The very first pages have you drawn into both Grim and Raven's story and you wont want to put the book down once you start. Our girl Raven is one heck of a FMC. She is sassy and has an attitude on her, but also a soft and vulnerable side that will have you empathizing with her. Grim is the ultimate dark, mysterious MMC that is the perfect amount of psycho and protective that will make you completely head over heels for him. These two definitely seem like an unlikely pair, but their chemistry is off the charts and really develops throughout the story.
Speaking of chemistry...... MY GOD. Haley really out did herself with the smut on this one. I swear my cheeks were FLAMING hot reading some of these scenes. Each scene was so different and only got hotter than the next. Definitely makes sure all your devices are charged and that you aren't reading these scenes out in public lol!
This book does end in an HEA and gives just enough of the other characters that you will want to read the next books but can also read them as stand-alones and don't get the cliff-hanger vibe.
Also don't forget to check the TW! This book is EXTREMELY dark and does not hold back in some of the smut scenes. You have been warned (;
Happy reading babes!
P.S: So proud of you Haley! This book rocks and I already want to read it a million times!
A weird one! Sometimes a good weird, sometimes a bad weird!
MMC is a grim reaper who was sent to reap the soul of a 10 year old girl due to the beating of her step-father. For once in his career, he felt s.th deep in his chest and ended up saving the girl and killing the step-father instead. As a result, he was incarcerated for 15 years but he still kept tabs on her.
Sadly our FMC became wild, reckless with her life. She's suicidal because she's alone in the world experiencing troubling visions about grim reapers. She flirts with death just so she can be with the only person who saved her (MMC)
She works a working job for petty pennies so she can afford a shitty apartments, shitty drugs and shitty hookups.
All in all: The book deals with some kinks exploration and some paranormal fantasy. It was an average book (according to my taste ofc)

"I fell in love with you when I saw you ride your dildo while you choked yourself with a scarf."
Calling on the Reaper is book one in Haley’s new series, The Reapers. Please read the trigger warnings before diving in. Haley does NOT hold back in this book. It is dark and you have been warned.
Everyone has their must-read authors, and I can confidently say Haley is one of mine. I have been reading her books since the very beginning and have fallen more and more in love with her writing with every book she puts out. Calling on the Reaper is hands down one of my favourite books that she has written to date. It is the perfect mix of plot and smut and I am LIVING FOR IT.
Grim and Raven, where do I even start? Their story is unique, their chemistry and pull towards one another is intense, and the smut... holy moly! Haley always said she was going all out with this one, and man, she did not disappoint. All I will say is do not read this in public and make sure your toys are charged. You’ll be blushing and will definitely be reaching for them.
I cannot wait for the rest of the books in this series! I need to read Rage, Caden and Brody’s books like now. I'm forever proud of you Haley!

Thank you Haley Tyler for the ARC copy of Calling on the Reaper!
This is the first book I’ve read from this author and it certainly won’t be my last. I was in a book slump before reading this. It took me right out of my slump! The connection between the two main characters, Grim and Raven, was HOT! The novel was an action-packed page turner. The plot twists always caught me off-guard. I could not put this book down. If you like Dark Spicy Romance and fated mates then this is the book for you.
Oh my god. Grim. Who knew after reading this book all of want for my birthday from the zon was a Grim Reaper called Mason. Subtle hints being dropped for the boyf *cough cough*
Ok, so Grim has joined my Harem of book boyfriends (sorry babe they're just too important to give up for you, I know you don't like to share but this is a condition i can't give up).
Let's get to it. Meet Raven, 10 years old and about about have her soul Reaped by Grim, until he switched things up and took the person about to kill hers soul instead. Unaware that Reapers are able to have soul mates and thinking his soul is non existent he gets sent to the In-Between as punishment. For the next 15 years Raven dances with death in aission to meet Grim again, not realising he's been visiting her every year trying to stop her from succeeding. Until he meets her Mason. This book had everything. Humor. Love. Banter. SPICE (who knew unconscious sex whilst balancing on your neck was a turn on with a 7 foot massive schlonged Grim Reaper) but most of all their bond was fated. Not to be broken. Even when Raven is murdered and Grim turns her into a Reaper.
By far one of my favorite books of the year. @haleytylerthewriter what a book. And as if that wasn't exciting enough, last night I was accepted into the Chaos Crew Street Team and now get to be along for the ride for any future works that come out. If its anything like this one I'll shout it from the roof tops.
Favorite quotes.
🔥 Just because I was a Reaper, didn’t mean I was heartless— well, technically, I was, but I wasn’t an asshole. Well, actually, I was that, too.
🔥 I’ll earn your forgiveness. I have eternity to prove myself to you, Raven, and I won’t give up. I’m so fucking sorry.” I stared at him, confused. “Why?” I muttered. His body went stiff, and he blinked at me. “Why? Why, what?” He pinched the bridge of his nose, wiping the last of his tears away. “Why are you sorry?”
🔥 “Because I made you a monster,” “I don’t hate you. I don’t think we’re monsters. I love you.” He inhaled sharply and moved his hands to my hips.
This was such a dark but enticing book to read! I usually don’t red books like this, but so glad I decided to! Grim and Raven have such unique story to tell. He comes to reap her soul and instead reaps the step-father for abusing her. Fast forward 15 years ahead and Raven is living dangerously on the edge of death & Grim has been locked away for breaking reaper law. 15 years he’s been locked away with only seeing her for one day every year. He hated her for wasting the life he let her have instead & planned to reap her. The craziness they go, the lengths Raven gets close to death to see if it was all in her head or if she can meet Grim again.
DNF. I got almost 80% of the way through and just couldn’t do it anymore. One issue for me was that there are side stories about the reaper world that never progress and we still don’t know almost anything about the reaper realm getting towards the end of the book. Also the characters seems to completely change out of nowhere a little over halfway thru the book. Raven and Grim’s personalities don’t align with how they acted at the beginning of the book and it can’t be said that it was due to character development since neither learned a thing from their mistakes.
I typically like to rate the characters to see how they would fare against/with anyone else but their love interest to judge them as a being. Raven would be dead. If Grim had arrived back from his punishment any later or you know not at all, raven is TSTL and would be dead. So yeah. No I don’t like her.
Something wasn’t grabbing me. Grim felt like a sappy puppy that liked to do dark things, but from the summary and the trigger warnings….I was expecting more unhinged. It wasn’t (at least not in my opinion), but check the triggers since it may be dark for you.
It jumps timelines constantly and I was getting bored with some of the flashbacks vs present chapters. Grim was just a really nice reaper, and his band of brothers seem like really decent MMC’s. I didn’t want decent or good, so this is on me, but figure I write this out so I can remember to not try to pick this book back up in the future.
I really love the world that Hayley Tyler is building with the first book in the series. It did a great job setting the stage and explaining the Reapers, their job and their culture too. It was a lot to take in at first but I’m glad we got to see the nuances too with the additional characters that were woven in and the concept of a soul being so focal to the story for both Grim and Raven as well as the other brothers too. Even with all we got to learn, I still don’t think I learned enough to really understand what is happening on a larger level. There seems to be an underlying plot that hasn’t really started to reveal itself yet so I’m left with some unanswered questions too.
Okay now onto Grim. I couldn’t tell if I loved his character or kind of hated him at times. He would have these moments of perfection and then totally sully that with some WTF moments too. Raven definitely threw me for a loop in this story. I understood her fascination with the reaper who saved her but her back and forth flippancy kind of grated on me at times too. I’m kind of in limbo about both of them honestly. I found myself way more intrigued by Caden though and the other brothers too and then see how Mason/Grim and Raven continue to grow.
I’m not sure if it was just me but this felt like a slightly different writing style from Hayley Tyler’s normal. I don’t usually enjoy the back and forth between past and present but I’m glad she chose that style for this book. It helped keep me captivated page after page as you watch the pasts and present puzzle pieces start to fit together.
Hot damn! The way this book sucks you in right away and leaves you desperate to know what happens next! The characters draw you in like a moth to a flame.
Grim is the perfectly imperfect, grumpy, hot, possessive alpha male. Raven is a sassy, strong-willed woman who isn't afraid to show her vulnerable side. When they come together the sparks fly!
The balance of plot to romance and spice was great and holy hotness the spice! Each scene was better than the one before.
I cannot wait to read more from this series! You do not want to miss out!
I loved this book! I wish there could be Caden’s book in the future ! But this one I loved , Imagine this just being real life. Lie if we could see reapers , that would be crazy good 😌 lol
THE LIMIT DOES NOT EXIST FOR HOW MUCH I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!
- Fated Mates - Dark Romances (check TW!!!!) - Amazing world / story - action!!!!
Not only is it tremendously well written and intentional…the story is refreshing and new! I haven’t read a book like this in a while and I was enraptured from the first page! Nothing in this story felt rushed or ignored — it was perfect.
One of my favorite things about dark romances is the the fact that the author has the ability to take something that’s painful and make it beautiful — and Haley definitely did that here! I cannot wait for the next book and I’m so thankful this is a series heheheh 😈
I would not recommend this. First of all neither of the main characters are very likeable. Or intelligent for that matter. Raven is constantly did drugs and got into situations where she was close to death so she could run into Grim.
He literally threatens to knock all of her teeth out as dirty talk?
Her best friend gets kidnapped and assaulted due to her friendship with Raven.
The author does an excellent job warning the reader about TW. I would say this leans heavy on degradation kink, which is not my jam. That’s not the reason this book didn’t work for me. The main characters are supposed to be soulmates but I was never convinced that they actually cared for each other.
DNF - absolutely could not get into this but a point for interesting concept? I found Grim to be exhausting and his obsession (which I get dark fantasy) was almost whiny. I feel like I started a totally different book than what others have described.
The beginning was great but once 50% hit, it was dragging ooooon! All of that could have been a bit more interesting. And I like a little choking during spicy time but when she passes out, that's a turn off. How is she enjoying it if she's unconscious?????
Gooooood lord did I like this good, a caught myself re-reading parts multiple times! Definitely recommend this book to my friends. Love the author, she writes wonderfully!
I came across this from a TikTok, the video was obviously pretty compelling for me to borrow it from KU. I’m typically very wary of books I see on TikTok.
⚠️ Spoilers below, I’m sure. ⚠️
Unfortunately this wasn’t quite my cup of tea. The smut was solid but I struggled to get through the beginning of the book. I should have probably stopped reading immediately but I had no way of knowing that the alternating flashback chapters would go on for 50% of the book. I hate that so much. Honestly, I don’t even see the benefit of the nonlinear timeline here. I understand some authors use it purposefully as part of the process but that definitely didn’t feel like the case here. There wasn’t really anything gained by telling it this way. It just annoyed and frustrated me. I think potentially it was supposed to be written this way to conceal that Grim and Mason were actually the same person but I assure you that there was absolutely never a question about this fact. It was 1000% obvious immediately that they were the same person and if the intent of the nonlinear storytelling was to obscure this from the reader it failed miserably.
I did enjoy the style of writing and authors voice despite the obnoxious alternating flashback/present day timeline switches. The author clearly set up potential stories for other reapers. I’d be interested in coming back to read those, especially if they aren’t told in this particular format.
This was pretty spicy overall. If you are just looking for some spice this delivers. The connection between Grim/Mason and Raven felt authentic. H was a broody dominant hero and I mostly liked him. The h was a tad annoying at times. She gave big nOt LiKe OtHeR gIrLs vibes but I’ve read worse.
H/h met when he saved her a kid. He’s punished for prematurely reaping the soul of her abuser so he’s away for 15 years or so. He watches/ stalks her each year when he’s free for one day a year and once he’s free he stalks and watches her for 6 months.
After she grows up and is old enough to go out and party so apparently goes a bit wild. Drinking, drugs, risky situations and sex. I got the idea she was a bit of a ho. She’s experienced a lot of abuse in her life so you can’t blame her for being so messed up. When H is watching her he’s angry with her for her shenanigans until he starts stalking her daily and gets a better idea of who she is.
Safety - he obviously is not out there banging other chicks after he meets her. She’s abused in foster care unfortunately. When she’s old enough to leave foster care she’s not celibate. Though her relations with other dudes all occur off page and H doesn’t intercede because she’s unaware he’s watching. I think he didn’t intend start anything up with her until he couldn’t resist her anymore.
This isn’t a bad story I just hated the way the author told the first half of it. If you don’t mind flashbacks every other chapter you will probably like this one more than I did.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This story is definitely something different from what I’m used to and I loved it. What a fascinating world Haley has created. So much to think about. Especially our souls and what happens when we pass. I think I could go on for days with this topic so I enjoyed reading a story centered around it. Grim and Raven were meant to be and we get to see how that plays out. And their connection is a hot one. Holy spice. Looking forward to seeing where this series goes.
“It’s your lucky day, little bird.”

“It’s not selfish to want to be with your soulmate forever,”

“I was selfish because I want you. I need you. I couldn’t give you up. I couldn’t let you go.”

***As always with Dark Romance, please make sure to check ALL TRIGGER WARNINGS before deciding to read this book!!***
This book was amazing! Grim and Raven were such a dynamic couple. I loved how from the very first glimpse we got of them together, it was clear that their paths were always meant to cross. Their story was definitely a dark one, but so beautiful nonetheless.
Raven spent most of her life searching for Grim, chasing after her him without truly knowing why she needed him so desperately in her life, and not even knowing if he was actually real or just a figment for her imagination as a young child who had suffered so much abuse. Grim had always tried to stay in his lane and play by the book when it came to reaping, not really feeling the need to bend the rules, but his encounter with Raven turned his world upside down, and made him feel something he had long thought dead inside of him.
Seeing how these two played such a crucial role in each other’s lives was so interesting and fun to read. Haley had me hooked from the first page! I honestly couldn’t put it down, it was just sooooo good!! Raven’s unconditional love for Grim, and how she never saw him as a monster, the way he saw himself; Grim’s fiery love and possessiveness of Raven, and how he was willing to give up everything to keep her safe and by his side. I loved how Grim wanted to protect Raven from everyone and everything, but when they were together and alone, they loved to push each other to their limits, if you know what I mean… *wink, wink* The spice was OH SO STEAMY!! Oh my goodness it was just UGH, so good!! The banter, the tension, the foreplay, and the aftercare!!! It was just *chef’s kiss*
I also enjoyed the little sneak peek we got at the next potential couple for the next books. This is definitely a series that I’ll be reading every book for! If you’re thinking about getting this book, DO IT!!! You won’t regret it!!! Make sure to check TW, as it is a dark romance!
One Grim Reaper makes a connection with a mortal (Raven) and goes against the norm. He is punished for it and she goes down a path of self destruction to try and find him again.
This simple permis has so much potential, but is completely wasted. So much so that I feel like I want to rewrite the book.
My alterations: I’d keep everything until the episode with Eddy, which I would make it into a source of conflict between the two main characters. Grim tells Raven the truth about Eddy’s’ extracurricular activities and his inability to do anything about it, which causes Raven to take matters into her own hands and hunt Eddy down.
I would make her unleash years of suppressed trauma and powerlessness on him, with Grim standing by unable to stop her. Probably Grim’s repressed soul would even be attracted by the darkness in her.
I would also want to see Raven have to deal with the wreckage of her life, now that she no longer has the “pining for Grim” excuse. She would start to heal, attend therapy, question if her kinks are kinks or just trauma responses. Their private time would shift with her finding more power and feeling more in control. She can keep her turn-ons, but make them more nuanced and have the characters discuss it and try new things until they find a good rhythm.
The dynamic of their relationship should also be explored more, with Raven putting her life together and Grim having more empathy while trying to help other Reapers find their souls and get better work conditions.
Raven would still die, but 5 years later when things are different for her. When she has reasons to mourn her life but is also happy to be with Grim forever. Another Reaper would go for her, and Grim would have to rush to transform her in time. Then her training to become a reaper would be a source of interest.
The world would need to be built a lot better, with visuals on differences and similarities, rules that govern the Other World, powers and limitations for the Reapers…
