Van's next mission has begun, and at the heart of it is the power to save lives.

Meanwhile, a hungry galaxy looks to a brilliant young scientist for answers, making her the most wanted person in known space.

After years of research, Adayluh Creel perfects a resource to feed sixteen races--or more, all with one golden plant capable of growing on the most hostile worlds. For her efforts, she wants nothing, but savage forces will seek to possess what she would give away for free, thus controlling the food source for billions of people.

But Adayluh has powerful allies who know what's at stake, and the fight is on as the Guild, GKU, and other shadowy powers converge on one point, with one goal--save Adayluh, save the people, and end the Sorcerers forever.

Another installment of the ever-enjoyable Backyard Spaceship series. I love SPACE COPS and this is one of the best installments of them. I love seeing the heroes and their robot buddies work against a massive megacorporation. If you liked the previous ones then you're bound to continue enjoying the series.

Awesome sci fi adventure

I don't usually care about covers; the story matters to me. But this cover is absolutely freaking gorgeous and screams science fiction in the best way. I love this series. The crew is fantastic, and the new addition is hilarious. The running "pants" jokes never get old. Van's interactions with his mother are believable and heartwrenching. The kids are always my favorite part. I recommend this series; start with book 1 to have the best experience.

This review was erased from my kindle and did not post to Amazon.

In this book, Peacemaker Van Tudor and his ship, the Fafnir (I still don't like or understand that name), fly around meeting new people or aliens and make new, deadly enemies. They also get their ship upgraded, adding new weapons and capabilities that still don't completely equal their enemies. The do pay more attention to the Iowa, a battleship that is kind of in mothballs because Van doesn't have the money or crew to fully operate, at least enough attention to get it badly damaged in a horrendous fight. But, that battleship soon proves it's worth more than Van could ever imagine.

Still, Van Tudor is wanting to find out who is supporting the Trinduks and where their base of operation lies. He does this by going deep into the DEEP, an area of space way beyond the know universe, where the Peacemaker Guild really has no authority. It's a long, long way to get to this place called Rodantic's World. Here they find what they are looking for and much, much more. They have now seen the operations of a mega-corporation called "BeneStar". It seem BeneStar controls the DEEP and now is wanting to move into known space and begin controlling it also.

BeneStar seems to be the evil behind everything bad that Van Tudor and his crew have run across. They are far reaching into everything and want to control more. It takes quite awhile, but Van finally identifies a single individual who is in charge of this mega-corporation, but he certainly can't control or manage all of it by his lonesome; it's to vast and organization for that. Still, he has a name and that's who he goes after or rather they come after him.

The Trinduks or someone within the BeneStar corporation has found out a lot of information about Peacemaker Van Tudor and his associates. They know where he's from (Earth) and everyone he has had any kind of contact with over the years as a Peacemaker. They can and probably will make trouble for all of these people and aliens just to get at Van Tudor. So, Van has to put the word out to his friends to be on their guard against possible attacks from unknown sources hired by BeneStar.

Then he finds out that BeneStar is also looking for another individual. This person is a scientist and she is working in the agriculture business. She has apparently created a new kind of crow that could possibly feed the entire galaxy. While that would be fantastic, it wouldn't be greatly less so if BeneStar had control of this new process or plant. They would ultimately control the Galaxy's food supply and that would put them in control of everything. Van isn't going to let that happen.

It's going to require a large part of the Peacemaker Guild to pitch in and help stop BeneStar. Van even gets help from his estranged Mother, even though he's not sure he wants help from her. He also manages to get some help from a bunch of adolescent kids who actual turn the tide in a battle. These kids weren't supposed to be any where near the bad guys, but who's to stop a bunch of rambunctious pre-teens and teenagers?

This is a pretty good story with us meeting a new member of Van Tudor's crew. It's a good think they have been gradually expanding the Fafnir's living quarters or it would be quite crowed on the ship by now. How this new crew member works out is yet to be determined, but I think he'll fit in just fine.

Of course this series isn't done yet, Book 10, "Severed Ties" is just about ready. It's coming out on 9 October 2022. I've got it on my To Read list and I suggest you continue with this series also.

This is still a good book in the Backyard Starship series but it is not the best one. But then that is probably a lot due to my personal preferences.

The good part is that it has all of the elements that has made this series quite entertaining to read. Van and his merry band of adventurers with a badge are as likable as ever. There are the usual bantering, especially from his battle AI Perry, ass-kicking, investigation, did I mention ass-kicking and so on and so forth. Icky is the same sledge swinging everything-can-be-solved-with-liberal-application-of-violence crazy person.

So far so good.

Why I do not like this book as much as the others is that it ventures much more into the realm of politics and mega corporations. Of course that means a lot more corrupt nonsense, lies and bullshit a ‘la Washington and fake media etc. etc. I really do not like those kind of things in my books. In the previous books the enemies has been, if not exactly ordinary, so at least more conventional criminals. That I quite liked. This new direction/twist, not so much.

On the good side though is that there is plenty of action. In this instalment in the series we are almost getting to the level of fleet action with small fleets of ships duking it out. And we finally get to see, or at least read about, the Iowa dealing justice and pain. I like the twist with Linulla’s kids on the Iowa.

So over all, it is a good book. I quite enjoyed it. I just wish it had not taken that particular direction.

I read a lot of books I'd say a good portion of them are junk but they occupy some time and keep my mind busy. This so far nine books series with the 10th coming out in October of 2022, is the first review I'll have written in a long time. It's a classic sci-fi tell good guys versus bad guys but it's extremely engaging. I just finished this 9th book in the series and throughout the entire series it's kept me laughing, crying, and riveted to my seat. It's everything that you want in a book and my only regret is that the 10th book isn't available already so I can start reading it! I would recommend starting with book one backyard starship and going on from there because this is entirely about the characters. The author does a tremendous job of building characters. He also builds great viisuals which I can only say that I can almost see if I close my eyes. Unlike some books or series where there is a single fixed protagonist, and a single fixed antagonist, this book has a primary protagonist but it also has secondary characters that are nearly as important and numerous antagonists with one overarching antagonist that comes in later in the series. I don't want to give anything away so prepare for a wild ride, put on your seatbelt and enjoy it! It's one of the best series of SF novels I've read in a very long time

I have greatly enjoyed most of the books in this series, however this one I found to be lacking in something the others had. I’m not quite sure what was missing, but this novel I just didn’t grasp my attention like the previous ones in the series. That’s not to say there wasn’t enough action or it lacked in character connection, it covered both of those in spades.

This time Van and his crew find themselves going head on against Benestar, the nefarious galaxy wide mega-corporation, which is hell bent on cornering the market in, well everything really. While trying to find a lost scientist, van works on repairing issues with his long lost family members and resolving the ever present side quest.

In short, there is a lot of important information in this book for the sake of the series, but I hope the next one is better.

Another story about Van and his crew

Another story about Van and his crew. His journey twisting from part of the universe and back and beyond. Putting this book down is a like the previous books hard to do you just want to read the next line or finish the paragraph then it's near the end of the page so it's finish the page then you notice it's near the end of a chapter so it's the end of the chapter, you then notice you have spent another 5 minutes reading and you are running late and have to f.
My advice make sure you keep an eye on the time tso your not late and the best bit read when you don't need to rush off so you can really enjoy it.

Some mysteries resolved?

Yet another action packed installment of the exploits of Van & crew. This time around they are kept busy with trying to stay alive as they learn a few critical details that fill in the gaps of the connection between the murdering chip syndicate, the multiple efforts at assassination against them plus a few other things.

After the cliffhanger in the last book I expected to see Van learn more about his mother. Instead, he’s keeping his distance from her until we’re well into the story. In the meantime he & his crew come up with some interesting ways to resolve problems that are unexpected. I wonder where the series will take them next?

Fields of Fire from the New IOWA Spaceship Crew without Formal Training

Focusing on getting the attention of BeneStar while preventing them from taking control of a new crop of food quality grains that can grow almost anywhere and be eaten by almost any species cuts off the attempted takeover of the product while they try to take control of the food supply.

Peacekeeper Tudor and friends have repaired their damaged ship IOWA and found a new crew that are very smart at manning and operating the ship even in battle the first time they test fly it. With help, they achieve jobs and save millions of lives.

Moist!

I laugh soooo hard each time this comes up! It’s gross and hilarious all at once.

Fields of Fire is another excellent novel in the series. Little nuggets like this sprinkled throughout make for lots of sniggers:

“That ship is a biohazard. I didn’t see a disinfectant dispenser anywhere.”

I’m not sure how they do it, but each successive novel both builds for the next and brings even more hilarity and action balancing the darkness. The insights into human (and alien) nature are dead on. Bring on book 10!

Solid growth

Sometimes a series this long starts to drag. Trying to keep things fresh amd interesting through book after book is difficult.

Chaney and Maggert have done a superb job of keeping the story going, keeping it fresh and interesting. This is especially hard since they never change the POV away from Van, the protaganist.

Speaking of Van, they have done an excellent job of having him grow and mature throughout the series while keeping him in character.

I am enjoying the Backyard Starship more than I've enjoyed many series for a long time c

Thanks!

AWWW! Space drama with a family reunion!
This was all manner of fun, thrills, and intrigue. Our hero must come to grips with himself as he is continually exposed to corruption in the universe and his various affiliations. I did like the crab kids taking over the Iowa, getting it ready to fight, then fighting like 10-year-olds about who is better (the funny thing is they are about 10-11 years old) and look like growing crabs which is what they are. But they are also technically adept and quite good at what they can do.

It's hard to review all these...

Because they're all so good.

Really, Terry is writing a great series of novels here. His command of science is simply fantastic. The growth of his characters is mesmerizing. I can literally see and feel what they look like in my mind, and I love them all. Their progression through this universe, which feels as real and as fleshed out as anything you could envision, makes sense.

I am delighted that this series can be relied upon to provide untold hours of entertainment!

Another great addition

It's tough to come up with new reviews in long series like this. This was a slightly different one than previous books as the crew is maturing more and more. I love how Van and crew are getting more and more powerful all the time, he's really becoming a force himself.

I won't give up any spoilers, so I'll just tell you that if you have enjoyed the series so far, you will again here.

Now I want a kick butt space sledge hammer!

Just finished book 9 in the series and I'm telling you sci sci-fi geeks this is a great series and Icky is still my favorite character. This is so good I haven't read anything else in weeks. All the character's are outstanding and each one has there own set of surprises. I would recommend this series to anyone who is of the space the final frontier mind set so read this, or don't it's your choice.

Good space opera adventure. The crew has finally learned the evil plan behind all the bad things that are happening. It's a banal and uncaring force that's somehow worse than evil.

My only nitpick is the characters have seen how better weapons could be created, but they've made no effort to create them. If anyone needs better weapons, it's them! It's disappointing they're not trying to get ahead of the game. I suppose the authors have to keep up the tension somehow.

Just keep getting better!

The saga of Van Tudor continues with new situations and predicaments he and his dedicated team continually struggle to deal with. Once you start this series get ready for a Nantucket sleigh ride of emotions as you yourself become part of the crew. You find yourself being drawn into the action and the distant worlds of the universe, holding both promise , and danger.

Exciting read!!!

Story continuity is marvelous, every page was thoughtfully stitched together but I love the progressive curve of Van’s growing wisdom while melding step by step experiences advancing his skills and thought processes with every event during this story! Looking forward to the next book and the escalating process to combat a mega organization of villains getting more annoyed with Van & crew interfering in their crooked dealings !!!!

Excellent read!

Chaney and Magnet are turning into the Rodgers and Hammerstein oh the space opera with the continued well tuned and told stories of the Backyard Starship series. The story continues to grow and develop a cast of wonderful character's that you would want as dear and close friends...grab and read.

Love these books

Books are always fast moving. Love all the characters. You get s good feel for each one. Like how you brought in Van's mother and grandmother. Is Van going to visit the world where his grandmother comes from or his mothers background. Will be looking for next book.

Continues to be an excellent read!

The overall story continues to unfold throughout the series and each character continues to develop! I do get lost sometimes when mom or grandma shows up and wonder if the authors have confused the two, bit it seems to work out when I backtrack. I would like to see those those characters fleshed out a bit more.
Very enjoyable series though!

They've done it again

It's hard to write an original review when the authors keep delivering high quality work, book after book, with repetition.

I get partway through a book and wonder if it will suddenly become stale and then - boom - a complete curveball comes in.

Excellent ending, no spoilers.

couldn’t finish

I read the first five books with enthusiasm, and the next three hoping they’d get better. Finally on this ninth one…I gave up. At some point the familiarity with the main characters loses its charm when you just can’t figure out what the plot is, or if there is even a plot at all.

Interesting times

Van seems to perpetually live in interesting times but gets through well. I find the personal drama with his female relatives endearing and worth all the gore and battles. Van is the kind of character that makes me want to pray for him. I have to remind myself he's a character in a sci-fi novel not a real person. Good writing Mr. Chaney.

story in stories

When I started reading this series I thought is was cute with a little too many little stories and too fast through each one but as I’ve gone through 8 other books this being number nine, I have really come to enjoy all the parts of the little stories starting to fit together
We’ll done! Can’t wait to read more

Finally we get to the real villains - mega corporations and their rapacious greed! I love that the evil conglomerate is named BeneStar, and they are so evil that they want to control all food production for maximum profit, and are doing everything they can to stop a scientist from keeping control of her own breakthrough to do it.

It's bitter sweet reading book after book since I know that I'm halfway through the series thus far (I know book 23 will release this year) but the books are so good! The adventures that Van and friends are on, firefights that may be their end, the crew banthering back and forth during an event, combined are what makes the series great.

Realistic imagination

This continuing adventure of van and his crew has been cobbled together brilliantly adding Crew members along the storyline and unfortunately losing some... It continually pulls more imagination out of my head Painting a vivid picture of our universe and beyond
