Evelyn enjoyed living a nice, quiet life in an anarchic pirate port, far from the world she’d once conquered.
Then came an attack by mercenaries that made her angry. By the time the dust settled, she had a group of former slaves which she’d freed, her djinn assistant had convinced several of the women that they should join Evelyn’s brand-new harem, and she was looking for a new home, likely aboard a ship.
If nothing else, it was going to make Evelyn’s life more interesting, and she almost looked forward to it. If the rest of the cluster was sweating bullets at the re-emergence of a notorious warlord, that was their problem, not hers.
I was born in October, 1985. Not much of my history would likely be of interest, but I grew up primarily in Utah, a land of ultra-conservative people, and yet oddly open to Science Fiction and Fantasy.
I started trying to write in high school. That didn't go well, and I mostly lost the spark for a long time, only rarely finishing writing a story, as most of my inspiration instead went into tabletop role-playing games, like Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder. In the process I developed a possibly unhealthy obsession with elves and succubi. If I ever write a story without either, it's probably Science Fiction...and there are even odds that someone will body-mod themselves to look like an elf. Trying to be honest here.
My writing tends to focus on the relationships between characters, though it may not seem like it at times. The stories in the background are just that, a backdrop for the development of the characters and situation. I try to fully think them through, but it's not always the case.
Anyway, not much more to be said. I'm an oddball, and I know it. I'm also somewhat stunned at the success my work has attained thus far, and am trying not to panic over it.
This was a really weird roll of the dice, though it panned out for me, in the mood I’m currently in. Which is my way of saying “don’t take my rating as an indication of whether you’ll like the book or not”. Evelyn is pure wish-fulfillment, a power fantasy, and a Mary Sue to boot. The story is pretty much her carving her way through the galaxy meting out justice and looking for a decent fight. Oh, and assembling a harem of capable women to show off in front of. Okay, that last is uncalled-for and implies that she’s vainglorious and she isn’t. She’s just really powerful and has fun taking out scoundrels.
And the worldbuilding is only going to be interesting if you’re a fantasy roleplaying nerd. It’s all the D&D fantasy races and magic with a far-future technology edge—kind of what Shadowrun would be if it were trying to rip-off Traveller instead of Cyberpunk.
So yeah, lots of stuff thrown in the hopper and jumbled together into a story. Only, the author does characters well-enough for me to attach to all the side characters. And he does power fantasy well enough for me to be along for the ride with Evelyn’s over-the-top hijinks.
And I dunno, I think I’m getting to special pleading land because I’m going to give this four stars even though it’s all the negative things I said it was and lots of random PoVs besides. It's something of a pulp-inspired romp and if you aren’t going to be very tolerant of all the tropes crashing around, do yourself a favor and give it a pass. But if you are in the right mood and can go with the flow, it’s an exuberant ride and a lot of fun.
A note about Steamy: There’s a bunch of off-page sex with just enough detail to trip the steam tag. But only barely and only the once.
I picked up this book for 2 reasons. 1: I'm trying to read more space opera, as I'm researching the genre in preparations for writing my own book in said genre. 2: Also a genre thing, actually. I thought this book could fit under the ''cozy'' genre, as it didn't seem to be any high stakes.
That said, because there aren't any high stakes in cozy books - which this book could be called - there are a lot of things that need to work for the reader to stay engaged. The characters must be interesting and grab you to make you invested, and the writing has to be good. And there should always be some goal the MC is working toward, even if it's finding funds to repair their mecha suit, or travel from one part of the world to the other. There was nothing like that in this book.
There were too many characters for me to know who was who. And the writing jumping around in POV - sometimes to random bystanders! - didn't help this at all. This mean that I never got invested in any of them.
Then there was the lack of anything happening. The whole story in this book is that the MC gets sick of people trying to kill her for something she did in her past, so she commanders a space ship and sets out. In doing so, she also saves 10 women from slavery - one of the reasons things got confusing, especially because most of them disappeared in just a few chapters - and that's one of the biggest hooks to this book, I think, the whole idea of a lesbian harem on a space ship. At least there's no graphic sex scenes, despite all the women being so extremely male gaze. There is a sentence in the book regarding Star and Moon, where they say ''because we're identical twins, we can swap clothes''. That's not how that works. Even if you're an identical twin, you may have a different metabolism, hormone output, or eating habits, that lead to you having a different body type.
And then there was the writing. I've already touched on the jumping around of POV, but the writing in itself was repetitive and meandering, and we got so much random backstory about so many random characters, that the whole book ended up feeling like one big fluff piece.
I really wanted to love this book it has all the makings of something right up my alley. Sci fi, fantasy races - elves, dragons, demons, angels, succubi, you name it. It has multiple planets and a sassy Djinn. The book started off super strong and gripped me. However, about 30% I started to wonder when we were going to get to the story. The world building is phenomenal. We get introduced to lots of new characters, but it didn’t grab me. I kind of lost a bit of interest. The main character is strong, and phenomenal, and for me a little too perfect. Even her ‘flaws’ are quickly justified and explained that she’s actually the best a ‘baddie’ could ever be. I found it hard to keep remembering that these characters were all of different races as often their personalities didn’t shine through as very unique for me. My last point is that I also couldn’t quite fully submerge myself into the story. For me the most important and interesting parts were often not in depth and described/mentioned after the fact. This might be the perfect book for you. It turns out I’m driven as much by being fully immersed in the action of a story as by great world building and fantastical characters.
Edit: Abby Craden did a spectacular job of the narration, the story just wasn’t for me.
I found the start of the book quite confusing and was struggling to understand where it was going. However it eventually it became clear it was a madcap romp across the galaxy with a sort of magical superhero and her growing harem. At times it is disjointed, but it is fun and I will certainly lookout for the next book.
Evelyn a former conquer, space pirate and current weapons merchant accidentally rescues a number of slaves from a bad fate. Annoyed at the interruption of her life and somewhat bored she decides to continue to help the slaves find a better life.... possible on her new ship... just hopefully not in her harem. (That would just invite more trouble.....)
Honestly I had a lot of fun with this one. Evelyn in an OP protagonist in a magical Sci-Fy space adventure. What is not to like! She has seen and done quite a few bad things in life, but maintains her wits an kindness for those she cares for.
I'll definitely be picking up the second book in the series.
A real fun power fantasy, full of arrogance, snark, wholesomeness and different characters. No angst, no stakes, no overshadowing evil in the background. Just fun.
Well, this one gets filed into the 'I didn't finish it' bin, folks. I got about halfway through before I just kind of had enough and wanted to move on, the book was that bad. I wish it was in that 'so bad it becomes amusing to read' category, but it probably is the worst kind of bad that you could possibly be in a book: frustratingly uninteresting. I mean it *tries* to be interesting, but it fails in every step of the way thanks to it's main character.
See, Evelyn Tarth is the best at *everything*. This is not hyperbole. She's naturally stronger than a cybernetic ogre hopped up on steroids. She has the magical power of an entire university of archmagi. She has the fighting prowess of twelve kung fu masters combined. There is literally nothing she can't do, and can't do easily. Her only fault is that she has a bit of a temper, so she ends up most of the book just outright murdering people. She doesn't even try to negotiate. Well, I mean, technically she does, but her form of negotiation basically boils down to 'Give up or I'll kill you all.' There was only so much smugness I could take. Oh, did I mention that she is an absolutely gorgeous svelte elf who women throw themselves at? Yup.
Which is a shame since the world is, in a better book, kind of interesting. It's a blend of high fantasy and scifi, a setting I wish there was more of. You've got fission powered tanks whose armor is augmented by shielding spells, power armor with magical runes inscribed in them. Hell, the idea that instead of hyperspace for their spaceships, they slip into the *astral plane* to travel FTL is just.... *mwa* Chefs kiss. It's so sad that this is severely underdeveloped and wasted on this book.
I think I could have forgiven a lot of this if any of the copious amounts of lesbian sex that happens happened on screen and more than just passing. Its rare when I say that good sex scenes could have saved a book because usually, as spicy as they may be, they're typically secondary to the story. However, this book just felt *right* to be all about the smut and it never delivers. Skip this one, folks. I'm giving it one start just for existing.
My first experience with Benjamin Medrano's books was though the Lilith's Shadow series, while I am yet to experience an other of Ben's Books I did read all of 5 of the Lilith Books, this book and that series and think book have one thing in common, it leaves all the classic Magic, Superhero, Fantasy and Sci-fi good vs evil troupes at home. Everyone in these books are poeple first, no-one is good, no-one is bad. Ok the main character is OP AF, but she is still human and has human emotions and human struggles. This is also why I am a fan of William D Arand and Michael Anderie's book's, Anime like Ghost in the Shell, like in life you must see beyond the story to see the person, to see the good in the bad and the bad in the good... as there is in all. My final thoughts, Benjamin Medrano, Please keep writing books like this, like Lilith's Shadow. My next stop will be you Mantles of power series. Thank you
3 & 1/2 stars. Classic Medrano material Fans of Benjamin Medrano will feel right at home here. This is a Pew Pew magic action story set in space with a massively over powered heroine, and a fair bit of fade to black lesbian sex. The main character is a misunderstood super (villain?) bad ass like Lilith's Shadow, but with unlimited magic like Ancient Dreams, and Mantles of Power. This book starts out very confusing. Is is trying to break-dance, or is it having a seizure? after that it just sort of does whatever it wants, much like the MC. Also this whole thing is set in space with lasers and mech-suits and space ships, but with elves, humans, dwarves, and dragonkin. This would all be a big mess (like the start of the book) if it weren't just silly comic book fun. If you like this book but have never read anything else by this guy, You will definitely like the rest of his work.
Delightful tale of hijinks and kick-ass, sexy heroines
What a delightful gem! If only more authors would let their Id get the better of them … Join Evelyn (bored dictator and conqueror who wants to escape the confines of the political halls after she conquered those who set out to destroy her after a prophesy) as she opens up shop in a renegade world. She would have been quite content there, had it not been for a greedy captain who thought the prize for killing her would be worth the risk. It wasn't, but there you have it – no reckoning with what fools would get up to. In the hold of this attacker's ship, she finds her next journey – rescuing damsels in distress.

I think this is one of Medrano's best since the ancient dreams saga. It does a good job of explaining what's going on without big exposition dumps. It has similar themes to other books by this author but thankfully the kidnapped and brainwashed, physically altered plot that happens in most of his books is dealt with very early on and with very little emotional investment so I didn't find it nearly as distasteful. I would like to thank Mr Medrano for publishing great fantasy and now sci-fi books with a lesbian theme. Yuri is life.
It was a good Book to read. There weren’t any paragraphs that stopped your progress because of bad writing. The main character is quite overpowered but has soft spot for a certain kind of people. Every other person that does not fall into this group and does go against her is most probably dead by the end of the chapter. Either way the story was balanced enough that kept you reading until the end of the book and the cliffhanger isn’t a big one, so waiting for the second book will be no problem.
This is a very fun chaos power story and I actually would like to know more about her adventures. Her loneliness combined with her powers and her new crew/harem.
There is a lot of story here and it was a fun adventure. I would love to see where it goes next, but maybe with a little more structured chaos and overarching plot with goals etc..
What a great action adventure story, from page one there is constantly something interesting happening ,Evelyn cannot stand liars, slavers or fools and there is an inexhaustible supply of those in the galaxy , along with Fya and the rest of the waifs and strays that crew Djinns Gift wrongs are going to be righted and mysteries solved.Really looking forward to further adventures of Djinns Gift and I'm off to see what else the author has written.
I really enjoyed this book. It's not the type of book I usually read with the exception of a few really well written books. I thoroughly enjoyed the main character even with her crazy power level. You tempered it well with her personality and actions. I REALLY hope you continue this story. I'll be watching and waiting, hoping that you do. Thank you!
Not totally sure exactly what to think about this series or where exactly its intended or expected to go or have any comfortable sense of who the characters actually are to feel connected, invested or captivated by the story thus far. But, considering other series by the author that were beyond amazing, giving it the benefit of the doubt that it'll come together in the next book.
Main focus on characters and their interactions, which are obscured but fascinating. Interesting world with rules similar to those in Grimdark novels but in more futuristic setting. Unfortunately, generic world-building that only is better in the last quarter of it. Descriptions limited to one word adjectives, basic shape features, or just info whenever something is small or big. Usually no colors or texture details of the surface provided. All sex scenes are fade-to-black. 3.4 Stars.
I have read quite a few books by this author. I am always surprised by the depth of the world and complexity of the characters. I love this new book/series and will be buying the second book. The main character is different, in a great way, than the other series. Read the sample, you'll buy the book.
I love this book and could not stop reading on Kindle the main character was great loved how you combined magic with technology loved the side characters I hope there will be more books in this series I think this book if made into a series could rank up there with the kurtherian gambit series
As always a wonderful book and a wonderful story you have a great gift for writing and putting down tails for people to really enjoy thank you for all you written and all you will right because you still have oh quite if you books left to right your no 1 we're done with Lilith
That was the plan and then boredom set in. So what to do, find a way to move on. And then find new friends and lovers, and then see what fun you can find. So that is just what Evelyn and her new lovers do. A fun ride with lots of action and a few good ones liners tossed in for good measure. A fun read for any and all.
It has a simple, straightforward story with simple characters. What makes it so good is that those characters are incredibly well defined. This gives the day to day a very smooth flow. The entire thing is a quick, fun read which is what makes a perfect slice of life book.
3.5 An interesting set of vignettes about an OP MC and her small but growing harem in a techno-magic scifi setting. The action was interesting but not really compelling. The characters, except for the MC struck me as thin. The world was pretty cool and that alone makes me want to read the next book.
Enjoyable story. Evelyn (the Mc) seems to be completely unstoppable, she is Superman without the Kryptonite problem. She was still very likable and friendly even though she was the most feared person in the Universe. There was plenty of action action that kept the story moving, but Evelyn always got her way.
This was a fun and entertaining read. The main character is just so awesome to read about see her being such force of nature. Thanks for the fun read! Can’t wait for the next one!
I really liked this book especially the main character, she was brilliant, but I am a bit miffed that you are going to leave it, I mean why call it book one !? PLEASE carry on this series I'm really enjoying it.
Great story, awesome characters and an enjoyable plot. Would love to see more of Evelyn's adventures and antics, also maybe see her ship made as powerful as her, but overall a great book and I cannot wait for the next book :D
I throughly enjoyed this book but I couldn't give it five stars simply because it was so random. There's really no over arching plot and parts of it seemed to contrived but it's still a fun read. A weird mix of d&d and space opera.
Good character with action, manic, and science well blended. I love that the focus stayed on the characters and did not get bogged down in creating a flawed hero like so many others do or trapped in overly complex world building but just the story flow naturally.
