From Tormented Tides #2

On Twisting Tides

Rate this book
The curse is broken, but Katrina is still plagued by the haunting note left behind as a new semester begins in the coastal town of Constantine. And she’s still not sure how to admit to herself that she may never be the same after that night on Valdez’s ship.

Meanwhile, Milo adapts to his second chance at life, but the heavy conscience of a pirate's past still weighs on his soul. When Katrina receives another chilling letter, she’s tasked with a burden that will require a journey across the sea…and he’s determined not to let her face it alone.

But as Milo’s world unravels and Katrina battles newfound inner demons, holding back the ocean’s wrath may prove to be the least of their problems…and the shadows of the past may not be as distant as they seem.

With more romance, seafaring adventure, siren magic, and swashbuckling in this second installment of the From Tormented Tides series, even the calmest waters will become a little…twisted.

***

Perfect for fans of Pirates of the Caribbean, The Little Mermaid, Outlander, and Outer Banks. Readers will love this series that combines pirate adventure and romance in a modern-day urban fantasy setting.

Hi! I’m Val. I love to write. From the first time I picked up a Little House on the Prairie book in my elementary school library, I knew I wanted to be a writer. And now I’m inviting you along for the adventure as I launch my debut novel FROM TORMENTED TIDES, the first book in a series with a modern twist on pirates, mermaids, and of course romance!

3.75 stars rounded up. This was good! This picked up right right where the last book left off. This was so much more action packed which I loved. I also like how Katrina finally came around to accepting her power. I will say there were parts where it became a little slow for me and I skimmed at times but overall it was still really enjoyable. I can't really say anything else without spoiling the book tbh. I can't wait for book 3 next year!

Thank you so much to Val E. Lane for providing me with an ARC copy in exchange for review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The ending of From Tormented Tides had me absolutely craving more. I wanted more Katrina and Milo, more siren lore, more pirates, more everything! So when the opportunity to sign up for a chance at an ARC of On Twisting Tides arose, I jumped on it quicker than Katrina jumps off of ships. I knew I would love the sequel just as much, if not more, than the first book, and I was right!

Plot:
We pick up almost right where From Tormented Tides left off with Katrina and Milo dealing with the aftermath of the curse being broken. Do they get to be happy and swim off into the sunset together? Of course they don’t because we love to see characters suffer! This time around, the two of them have to set out on a quest to stop one very angry ex-siren from ending the world. No pressure, right? That’s as vague as I can be without spoiling things, but let’s just say pirate curses are the least of their worries now. I did not expect the story to go where it did, but I found myself enjoying it more than I thought I would, surprisingly. There’s so much packed into the 324 pages of this book and I loved every second. There was action, there was character development, there were moments that I was stressed and some where I cried, and I would absolutely go through the emotional roller coaster all over again. I loved seeing the world expanded and explored more, and I am so excited to see where the story goes in book three after the ending of On Twisting Tides!

Characters:
A descendant of a siren, a 300 year old pirate, the rich girl collage roommate, and a grumpy mechanic hop on a boat. I know, that sounds like the start of a cheesy joke, but that’s our cast of characters! Book one introduces us to them, lets us get a feel for them and see what’s basically the start of their journey. Book two throws them into the deep end and we get to follow them as they try their best to stay afloat.

Katrina is trying her best to continue her life after breaking the curse and finding out she’s a siren. What is she supposed to do about that side of herself? Can she move on from the note she found or will it consume her? Milo is trying to find his place in the world after being cursed for 300 years and, understandably, he’s not only struggling, but he’s also finding it hard to leave behind his piratey behaviors, putting strain on his and Katrina’s relationship. I really loved seeing how the two of them interacted because obviously things aren’t perfect and they weren’t portrayed as such. With a lot of books, you can encounter insta-love relationships where the couple is so perfect and never has any problems. But here, these two are dealing with some heavy realizations and issues and they’re struggling with figuring out how to move on from the events of the first book. They both have opportunities to grow as individuals and together, and smooth sailing it is not, friends. But their relationship is definitely reminiscent of Elizabeth and Will from Pirates of the Caribbean so if you liked that couple, you’ll love Katrina and Milo!

As for our other crew mates, I really enjoyed getting more of Kenzie and Noah with this book! Of course I love our main characters, but Kenzie and Noah are also really big parts of the events of the story and I think they add so much to the scenes they’re in. Not only do they help Katrina in her quest, but they also get to develop their own kind of relationship, and I loved seeing it develop as the story progressed. Kenzie’s personality is just so refreshing and I think she balances out Katrina really well when she’s going through some of her rougher moments, and while Noah can be very stubborn and grumpy, he’s definitely a softie with Kenzie and seems to really care for Katrina and Milo in his own way. I appreciated that the side characters were actually given the attention they deserved and the ability to grow along with Katrina and Milo and I really hope that they make an appearance together again.

The events of the story are incredibly trying on these characters in different ways and they all have things they have to deal with. By the end of the book, you’ll basically be reading about entirely new characters with how much they change on their journey, and I’m so excited to continue following the story of these wonderful characters in the next book! Also, there’s a surprise character comeback that had me yelling louder than Elizabeth Swann screaming FIRAR and that is all I will say.

Writing:
I’m big on writing. Obviously. If it’s difficult to stay focused or really feel like I’m getting invested in the world and the story as a whole, I’m going to struggle. But reading On Twisting Tides (or really Val E. Lane’s writing as a whole because I felt this way about From Tormented Tides as well) feels effortless. I jokingly compared the writing to the call of a siren to a weary sailor lost at sea, but it’s a good comparison. There’s just something about her writing that will draw you in and make you want to read for hours on end. The way she weaves the story together with these highs and lows seems almost like it comes naturally for her. This series is like a wave: the crest of the story is full of action and excitement that makes you want to stay up until the wee hours of the night reading. And the trough of the story is calm and emotional and character driven and makes you cry your eyes out because of how wonderfully written the calmer moments of the story are. I’m in awe of how she balances out those emotional moments with the high stakes scenes so well. I enjoy character driven stories and plot driven stories, and On Twisting Tides is a fantastic showcase of how to blend those two together into one book that you’ll continue thinking about long after you’ve finished the final page. I think it’s safe to say that I’m hooked on Val’s writing and will absolutely read anything she writes.

On Twisting Tides is exactly what you look for when you pick up a sequel. The plot is so exciting and has moments of heart racing action and heart wrenching emotion, the characters feel realistic and go through their own unique journey of growth, and the writing is addictive and will have you reading until the early morning hours. I could not have asked for a better continuation of a story that I love so dearly, and I’m more than happy to say this was one of the easiest five stars I’ve ever given a book.

I appreciate that this book was more pirate focused than the first. But it just didn't work for me.

Just like the first, the plot is decent, and the idea is there, but the characters are just so immature and bland that I just can't get into it. I also really hate a OW/OM trope, and while it's explained, it's still a huge chunk of the book.

I liked the time travel twist, it was fun, and it went along with the whole Bermuda triangle aspect so well. But as soon as we get to this point, Milo is separated from everyone, and Bellamy pops up. I think this might have worked better for me if Milo actually did something with his chapters other than drink excessively and pout about his dad not being the person he thought it was.

I needed more done with the plot, I just feel like I kept getting my hopes up that something big was going to happen, and then it didn't.

I won't lie, Katrina mixing her paints with her tears pushed me over my eye rolling limit for this book, and that was barely halfway through.

I liked the progression of Katrina's story and how it brought familiar characters back into play instead of moving forward just in St. Augustine. The ending made sense for the book, but I definitely did not expect the revelation in the last chapter, which was great. The main thing that made this three stars instead of four stars was that the initial time travel didn't really make sense to me and seemed to be random and too sudden. Otherwise, I enjoyed this story and I'm anxious to read the conclusion!

5/5

On Twisting Tides was an adventure like no other. What's not to love?!? Pirates, sirens and dare I say, time travel!?! Captivating from the start, book two picks up right where From Tormented Tides ended. With Cordelia and her sneaky ways, on the loose, traveling to the Bermuda Triangle, and in search for the Trident. Katrina, Milo and their friends Noah and Makenzie must do everything they can to stop her and her plan to rid the world of man. Throughout their time in the past, Katrina must come to terms with her siren side all the while dealing with her ever changing feelings towards Milo.

"In those 300 years, I've found many treasures, but never one as priceless as you. I would bury myself with you to keep from losing you again. I would seek you a thousand times to find you again and again. I would make a map of your body with the stars and follow it for eternity."

Ms. Lane knows how to write a book that keeps your interest throughout and makes you feel every single emotion. From love to hate, heartbreak to excitement, On Twisting Tides is a marvelous read that leaves you wanting more and more. Not to mention that the ending is set up perfectly for another book and I for one can't wait!! Thank you so much Val for allowing me to be a part of your arc team and for this fantastically epic, time-traveling tale!

I’m an ARC reader and my opinion is 100% my own and true. Now for my review:

Wow. What an amazing follow up to the first book From Tormented Tides. I absolutely loved that we got to meet a certain beloved character again as well as watch Katrina go through even more character development. Milo is such a sweetheart.

I’m absolutely fuming (in a good way) over the ending of this book. I hate that I have to wait for the third book after the ending that I just read.

Absolute 5 star read!

This is the second time that I’ve been chosen to be an ARC reader for Val E. Lane, and it’s a privilege I don’t take lightly. Little bit of background info, I originally found out about this series through TikTok, as I’m sure most people have, and I was so excited about it! Through all of the little clips they made promoting the book I felt like it promised readers adventure, mystery, seduction, and this incredibly interesting storyline. After reading the first book though I did feel let down and the things that made me interested in the book originally weren’t all there, so I was really hoping that On Twisted Tides would have what I felt was missing from the first book in the series. Moving on to my actual take of the book, I can happily say that I did enjoy the second book way more than the first.
SPOILERS AHEAD:
Reasons for why I enjoyed the second book more; In the first book I felt like Katrina was relatable, but pretty meek most of the time, and I would have liked to have seen more fight in her. We definitely see more fire and gumption from her as her and her friends navigate this new adventure. It seemed like her actions and reactions were more appropriate given the circumstances. I also liked Val E. Lane’s world building in this second book. It felt nice to get lost in the islands near the Bermuda Triangle 300 years ago. This new world building is living up to the promises that I felt were missing from the first book. Lastly, I still enjoy that the author included a playlist associated with each chapter, it brings an added layer to what’s happening in that given chapter or makes you understand what a certain character is feeling in that moment.
Some things I didn’t love about the second book. First, I’m still not feeling the insta-love that Katrina feels for Milo. Their relationship doesn’t feel believable to me at all, and I didn’t mind the fact that they spend a majority of this book apart. In my opinion Katrina’s relationship with Bellamy is more believable. And it’s not even anything to do with who do you like more kind of situation, like Stefan VS. Damon, or Edward vs. Jacob. I think from a writing stand point Bellamy is just written better, which is why I’m not mad that he made it back to present day time and Milo didn’t. Another thing that I didn’t like about the second book and kind of ties into the first reason is the way Milo speaks. There is one line in particular that I feel is out of place, it’s in chapter 3 and Milo says “ I acknowledge I didn’t handle this correctly”. What 300 year old pirate talks like that? I think it’s what we would all like to hear when someone does something wrong, but I don’t think it’s how it would actually play out. And there’s a couple more examples of this throughout the book where I find myself having to read Milo’s parts again because I’m just confused as to why he would say things in that particular way.
Overall, I think this book is significantly better than the first and it lives up to the promises of adventure, mystery, and seduction. It’s a fun and easy read.
I said it before but I can’t wait to see how these characters grow throughout the books! And thanks to the author for the opportunity to read her book early!

** I did receive this book as an ARC in exchange for a review **
On Twisting Tides takes place a few months after the events of From Tormented Tides. Milo is still adjusting to his second chance at life, while Katrina is trying to figure out what her great-grandmother wants. However, once she discovers that, the series of events that play out force them to go back to the 18th century in a race to save the world. Val E. Lane builds on her previous world to deliver this book that's perfect for fans of Pirates of the Caribbean, The Little Mermaid, Outlander, and Outer Banks. As it combines a mix of pirate adventure and romance with a modern-day urban fantasy setting.

This book follows Katrina and Milo after they are sent back to the 18th century in search of a magical trident that can move time, space, and life in order to prevent it from falling into the hands of Katrina's great-grandmother. However, the two get separated during the cross from one time period to the other.

Milo ends up back in his hometown during the week all the events that lead to him being forced to work on Valdez's ship. Thus, granted him a chance to rewrite his entire history, which would free him of the heavy conscience of the pirate life he was forced into. But that would also mean, he would never meet Katrina. So, he has to come to term with what it means to allow history to play out the way he remembers it or risk changing how things happened.

Meanwhile, Katrina along with McKenzie and Noah end up on Bellamy's pirate ship before he joined his father's crew. She struggles with her inner siren as she spends more time out of the water. Thus, leading her to be cold, heartless, selfish, and doing things she normally wouldn't do. All things she feared as they remind her of what Cordelia mentioned to her that Katrina was soulless just like Cordelia. While she struggles with this side of her, she also discovers that she can control water through her tears.

It was great to see Bellamy again as I loved his character in the last book and was sad to see him go at the end of From Tormented Tides. So, it makes sense that we got to go back in time to see him again. And going back to when Milo's backstory begins during a time when sirens were everywhere, allows for both of our main characters to have solid character development. Plus, we get to explore what that means for each of them since we got both of their POVs instead of just one like in the last book.

I won't spoil how the events play out or how they get back to modern times, but it was a rollercoaster of emotions. And I can't help but wonder, how the next book is going to go in this series with the way things ended. I wouldn't say it was a cliffhanger, but there was a major thing that happened at the end which will heavily come into play during the next book. Overall, I loved On Twisting Tides. I couldn't put this book down, and I can't wait to read the rest of the series as it gets released. So, I would give this book a 4.25-star rating out of 5. As this book kept me on my toes trying to figure out what was going to happen next. And the ending left such an emotional impact.

Their unlikely group (a cursebreaker college student who’s descended from sirens, a 300 year old pirate who was recently brought back to life, the rich college best friend, and their guy best friend) set sail to find treasure to save the world. What could go wrong?

Thank you so much for allowing me to be an ARC reader for this book!

From Tormented Tides is one of my all-time favorite books. I’m so happy with this sequel! It sucked me right back into that world! This book is for you if you’re a fan of pirates, fantasy, sirens, and some romance.

The plot was action packed! Be ready for some plot twists, I thought they were done so spectacularly that my jaw was dropping constantly! The plot had me hooked & I felt like I was apart of their world.

I loved Katrina in this book. We see her go through some struggles, as she has grown since book 1. She learned a lot about her family and herself, but the curse wasn’t the end of it. I loved seeing her come into herself. Katrina’s character arc this book was something so unique and I was interested every second. I was rooting for her the entire time.

I have been a Milo girl since day 1. I was so excited to get his POV this book! I love a good dual POV! It was so interesting to see his thoughts and his feelings.

If you love Bellamy, I promise you won’t be disappointed! I won’t tell you anymore though!

I also loved the character dynamics now that McKenzie and Noah are a part of the group!

I now have a book hangover & I did cry (I rarely cry at books) so be warned Val did not come to play! Can’t recommend it enough though!

Thank you again for allowing me to read this book! It releases March 27!

Val E. Lane’s On Twisting Tides is a thrilling continuation of the From Tormented Tides series, diving deeper into the lives of Katrina and Milo as they navigate the aftermath of a broken curse. Lane masterfully weaves a tale filled with adventure, romance, and the haunting echoes of the past.

Katrina’s journey is both compelling and relatable as she grapples with the emotional scars from her encounter on Valdez’s ship. The chilling notes that resurface add a layer of suspense, propelling the story forward and keeping readers on the edge of their seats. Her internal struggle is beautifully portrayed, making her growth throughout the novel particularly satisfying.

Milo’s character development is equally engaging. He wrestles with the weight of his pirate past, and Lane deftly explores the complexity of his emotions as he seeks redemption. His determination to stand by Katrina during her perilous journey underscores the deep bond they share, blending romance with the thrill of seafaring adventure.

The infusion of siren magic and swashbuckling excitement enhances the plot, appealing to fans of classic pirate tales and modern fantasy alike.

On Twisting Tides is a captivating blend of romance, adventure, and personal discovery. Lane’s engaging writing and well-crafted characters make this installment a must-read. Perfect for fans of Pirates of the Caribbean and The Little Mermaid, this book leaves you eagerly anticipating the next chapter in Katrina and Milo’s journey. Highly recommended for anyone looking to get swept away by a story!

I'm so thankful to have been given the opportunity to read and review this book.

This story picks up about a month after the ending of the first book. Milo and Katrina are in a race against Cordelia to get to the Bermuda Triangle and stop the destruction of the world.

What I liked:
*I enjoyed the time travel elements. It was exciting to spend the majority of the story 300 years in the past and see some familiar faces.

*Milo's pov. It was nice to be in Milo's head at times and see more of his backstory.

*Learning more about the sirens. Katrina had to more dully embrace her siren self and because of that we were able to see more of the siren powers and some of the more negative aspects of being a siren.

*The flow of the story. This book moved along more quickly than the previous one (in my opinion) and I felt like (save one scene) each scene flowed into the next well.

What I struggled with:

*This is maybe just a personal preference thing, but half the time Milo talked like he had always been from modern times and half the time he talked like he was from 300 years ago (which he was).

*Sometimes there was too much description and it bogged down certain areas of the story.

*There was one scene at the end of a chapter that seemed like it would be a huge, negative deal, but it was literal chapters before it was ever mentioned again and even then it was only in passing.

Overall I enjoyed the story and can't wait to see what adventures unfold in the next book!

Wow, I love a good pirate/mermaid book as much as the next person, but I don’t know how I’m expected to cope with the ending for this book as I wait for the next one! This book took me on a rollercoaster of emotions and even brought a couple of tears to my eyes. I was NOT expecting there to be time travel involved and that made the book all the better. The story did get a little slow in some areas and I found myself wanting to just skim ahead, but I stuck through and once you hit the turning point for the book you do not want to put it down. This book by far beats the first one, it was beautifully written and the world building was complex in that the author had to build not only present time in Florida, but also the 1700s in Nassau. I absolutely adore Milo and I’m glad that we get to see Katrina and Milo’s relationship develop as Milo adjusts to his new life as a living person after 300 years of sort of being undead. And I was glad to see Bellamy again, but I liked him better towards the end of the book and not really when he’s first reintroduced. And also Cordelia deserved everything that happened to her, and I hope to never see her again in any capacity. I highly recommend picking up this book if you love mermaids, pirates, romance, time travel, and saving the world!

Thank you so much to Val for allowing me to have the chance to be an ARC reader for On Twisting Tides!

This book picks up about a month after the events at the end of the first book and was quite the action packed ride. I enjoyed being back with these characters and seeing what adventures they embarked on. Things I loved - getting Milo's POV, I enjoyed getting a glimpse into his mind. The communication between Milo and Katrina was nice as well and of course I loved the return of Bellamy. I liked that McKenzie had more of a role in this book as well.

Things I would work on - like the first book, this one still struggles with being overly descriptive in some spots and using too many literary devices in a row (not every page needs one). I noticed both chapter 19 and chapter 44 were titled "Seasick", I wasn't sure if this was intentional or not. It didn't seem like it was but maybe I just missed something. There were a few grammar issues but nothing too bad, it was mostly in the middle. This book also ends on a cliffhanger, setting us up for book 3. This is a "me" thing but I hope that this will just be a trilogy and not a multi book series. I often find myself losing interest when series just go on and on. Other than that though, I did enjoy this book!

*I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review*

Inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean comes Swoon-worthy Swashbuckling Romance with just the right amount of badass characters, mystery, and earth shattering revelations.

First of all, don’t skip out on the playlist when reading this gem of a sequel. Honestly the songs brought the chapters to life for such a vivid reading experience.

Milo and Katrina are back in action, this time in a high stakes race against the clock. Katrina is battling her rising siren abilities, and Milo discovers more about his past than he thought possible.

This time, new allies are dragged into the fray. Old friends unite to fight against new, and powerful enemies in On Twisting Tides.

There are very few sequels that I like as much as the first book, and even less that I like more. This book matches up for the first in the series in excitement, and pacing. It surpasses the first however in action, romance, and surprise.

Truly a great read. It’s criminal that I don’t have my hands on the third book because I devoured this one in a single sitting. Cannot wait for the next one. Until then I’ll binge Pirates of the Caribbean on repeat.

I enjoyed this story. Finding more about Katrina and Milo together after the curse was broken.
Katrina fighting her inner siren was relatable in having that inside voice to deal with. Her conflict with the inner siren voice really showed the inner battle she was having with herself, her true self. Milo trying to just live his new life in the 21st century was cute to see happen, LOL.
Still don't like Cordelia, mainly with how she treats Katrina and Milo. Seeing a different side of Bellamy was nice, because we get to see how he was before being on his father's ship and crew. Learning a little more about Milo's past was nice, to help better understand what happened to him. When Katrina went full siren, it was a good thing because she became her true self and acted like herself again. The waterfall cave moment with Miko and Katrina, 🌶🥵.
The moment they returned home and missing Milo, I was a little heartbroken for him and Katrina. To have Bellamy return was a surprise, but he was there always in a way I think. On to the next adventure, can't wait for book 3.

My god… i just put the book down so this is fresh. i will preface this by saying the beginning quarter is a little slow but once it gets good.. it gets GOOD.

i dare say i like this one better than the first. it feels as though the author gained confidence with this one. FTT felt a little all over the place with tons of repetition purely bc she didn’t know what to write. this one had such a clear story and even explained things that were unexplained in the first.

i so deeply wanted to jump into this book and be there alongside the characters. the concept and story is just so good and i really didn’t have any problems with it (apart from one single line of dialogue that genuinely made me wish i couldn’t read (pg 211, you’ll know it when you see it))

i also spent the last 100 or so pages in constant tears, this one really got to me, beautiful story telling.

my only complaint: i would like to speak to the editor of these books bc whoever it is has done an atrocious job. i found too many errors for a published novel.

“Katrina Delmar, my starlight, I’ve waited 300 years for you. In those 300 years, I’ve found treasures, but never one as priceless as you. I would bury myself with you to keep from losing you again. I would seek you a thousand times to find you again and again. I would make a map of your body with the stars and follow it for eternity. In this place, I confess my undying love for you. You are finally mine. And I will share you with no other.” 🖤

Katrina’s life is finally beginning to settle down. She’s got college, her best friend Mackenzie, her paints, and the love of her life is finally safe from a curse meant to kill him.
Now, all she wants to do is find a new rhythm and settle down into some normalcy. It seems tho, that the only rhythm she can seem to find is the one the ocean plays for her.

Katrina is just now learning how to navigate the tides of true love when the angry waters from the past suddenly change her course. She finds herself on a seemingly impossible quest as she comes face to face with her dark side. But to run from who she truly is, means the world as she knows it will violently end.

No matter what she does, she always seems to find herself at the mercy of the sea.
Except this time… the sea doesn’t seem so merciful, because instead of giving back, the sea… wants to take away.

Thank you to Val for the ARC of this book! I was lucky enough to get the advanced copy of the sequel to From Tormented Tides. The first book is like a modern day Pirates of the Caribbean complete with hot pirates and ghost ships. Book two is back with another one of my obsessions: the Bermuda Triangle. We pick up shortly after the end of the first book with Milo trying to live without the curse and his relationship with Katrina. The plot picks up when Katrina's heritage causes the group to go in search of a trident in the Bermuda Triangle. During their trip, the Triangle sends them back in time to before Milo and Bellamy met. More pirate fun ensues and you learn more about Milo and Bellamy's past, as well as Katrina's inner battle. The book ends on a cliffhanger that makes me both sad and scared for the future of some characters. Pick it up if you want some more pirate/fantasy/romance fun.

Okay, so I was a little apprehensive about this book because of the first one. Not that the first one was bad, but I was really hoping for better storytelling and J.A. Lane did not disappoint!  I was so impressed with how far her storytelling has come from her first installment. The story line flows so well and she did away with just tossing in "filler" content that didn't belong.  I love how she piggy backed off her original idea and developed it further into something that really screams adventure. She continued to flesh out her characters and seamlessly wove it into the story.

I really love that she has one overarching story line (her whole family being mermaids and having powers) while also focusing on a different plot for each book. It really is like less serious version of pirates if the carribean.

She again included a Playlist which really added to the mood. Overall a good book and im excited to see what she has in store for the third one

If you like fast-paced and fun YA novels focusing on pirates, and the supernatural, On Twisted Tides is probably for you. It starts a bit slow, but around the middle, it picks up. There's plenty of angst, adventure, romance, and a healthy dash of siren lore. If you liked the sea-faring and treasure-pursuing antics in Pirates of the Caribbean, this book has plenty of similar but unique energy.

The characters are entertaining, and the story has a strong combination of poetic prose and character banter. It also features fun historical elements. Although this is the second book in the series, it's still clearly leading up to incredible angst with supernatural elements I'm looking forward to reading about. The ending is a tragic cliffhanger but a strong set-up for even more compelling stories.

I was a part of the ARC team and fell behind, so Val that's 100% my bad 😅
Y'all have no idea how hyped I was after reading the first book and I'm even more hyped about this one!! Pirates!! Mermaids!! Magic!! Give it all to me!!
I've Always wanted to read about merfolk characters, especially after playing as one in a d&d character.
This book is so amazing. I love the chemistry between Milo and Katrina as always, and I won't spoil what happens but about 80% through the book I almost bawled my eyes out. Devastated.
Cordelia is fr like a super villain and almost gives Ursula from the little mermaid vibes. I don't know if that was intentional, but if it was, I'm here for it.
I think I found Val's writing through TikTok and I'm so thankful I got to be on the ARC team for both books. I've seen so much growth in the last 2 books and it's inspiring. 🫶🏻

ARC Review:

First off, how dare you give me a book hangover Val!!! Ugh.

This book had almost everything you could want in a book. Romance, angst, longing, adventures, sirens, pirates, friendship, found family, etc. This book captured me from the very first line!

Without giving away any spoilers, this book made me want to jump in and shake some characters, but I knew that Val was doing these things for a reason and that I needed to trust her process. Boy was I glad. The ending was just a dagger to the heart and left me wanting for more…Val…when are we getting the next one?!

I highly recommend! This book took all the feels from book one and increased them tenfold! Val takes us on a journey we’ll never be ready to end.

I was among the lucky people who got a chance to be an ARC reader for this book, and even though I didn’t have to pay, I would’ve in a heartbeat.

After the beautiful story of the first book, I wondered where it would go to next, excited to follow Katrina and Milo in their adventures, and this delivered!
I was shocked by every turn, and couldn’t get enough of this thrilling story.

Seeing Katrina and Milo’s love story progress was also so enjoyable, easily up there with some of my favourite book romances of all time, and the side characters were always entertaining and had so much depth.

Please, please read this book, you won’t regret it!
