This story is simple and cute - the book is intended for the child/ren to add a note or drawing of their own at the end and give it to their daddy. It was a short rhyming book with fun illustrations.
ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book is the cutest! And it looks like we are reading a graphic novel with full page colourful illustrations! The artwork is so good. The writing is fun and playful. Thumbs up to all the amazing dads around the world!
Love it. Do get it when it comes out!
Thank you, SOURCEBOOKS Kids, for the advance reading copy.
My kids and I love this series of “How To Catch…” This one is a cute story, kids looking for Daddysaurus. The colors and pictures are colorful. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy.
This is the perfect addition to the How to Catch series. This picture books shows how many things a dad does and shows how to appreciate all the little things. The pictures are fun and the plot is catchy as always. Definitely recommend and I will be acquiring one for the kids at my daycare!
I happily received an arc via Netgalley in exchange for a honest review.
This book is perfect for children. I've been looking for bokks for my kids and this one is the one i've been looking for. The drawings are quite nice but the story is what sold me. It's absolutely heartwarming!
A cute book show casing all the things trust dad does for the family in a cute way. From growing a garden for healthy food for the family to doing repairs on the house.
I like how it shines a light on tasks that kids would not necessarily take notice of. It's a great way to teach littles other ways we show we love them. Basically start introducing love languages.
The only thing that didn't really work for me was the rhyming. At times it would be awkward to read. I think this book would have been ok as not a rhyming book.
The illustrations are bright and colorful.
Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks for this advance reader copy. My review is voluntarily my own.
How to Catch a Daddysaurus is another fun addition to the "How To Catch" series by Alice Walstead. The group of children that are in each book are a multi-cultural group of friends that work together to try to catch a Daddysaurus. In the story, they set traps, share what a daddysaurus does and make a real mess. At the end, they realize that they just have to yell out "We Love You Daddysaurus" and he will appear.
My two youngest grandchildren enjoyed this book. They laughed at the antics of the kids trying to catch the daddysaurus and the six year old talked about the various traps, what they should do and then laughed when she saw what really happened. The illustrations are amazing, with bright colours, lots of activity and detail, showing emotions in the faces of the children. After reading the book, we went back and looked at the possible traps and talked about drawing up plans, measuring, pulleys etc. The little one lost interest (he's only 4) but the older two joined in with the discussion. Of course the older one was quick with his critique of what they did wrong and what he would do instead. My one issue is with the rhyming in the story. There are a few times where reading aloud is awkward as the cadence shifts, but pre-reading will keep you from stumbling as you read it.
My students and I are big fans of the To Catch A…. Books. I love the premise of this story and it has a cute story! I think the illustrations are beautiful but I feel like the children look more like teenagers in the story. Since this book is marketed towards younger children, I feel like the illustrations should match that to help grab their interest. With that being said, I still would recommend this book!
Daddysarurus is a sweet, fun story. It's a great way to show appreciation for all that dads do. This is my first time reading in the "How to Catch" series. I felt like I was missing something from the start, which leads me to suggest beginning at book 1. I didn't know basic information on the cast of characters, which I could not overlook.
Overall, this is a great book to give dad for a special occasion or a gift for dinosaur-loving kiddos! For me, I didn't find anything to make this book stand out. If anything, I found it wordy and lost interest. The artwork is OK, but didn't hold my attention. Kind of generic.
I received this ARC in exchange for my honest review via NetGalley and SourceBooks Kids.
My daughter thought it was fun trying to catch a glimpse of the Dino in all the pictures. Overall if your kid likes Dino’s this is a sweet book. Thank you for the ARC Net galley!
What a cute children’s book. I am new to the ‘How to Catch’ series and very much enjoyed this one. The illustrations are bright and cheerful and the story will capture a child’s imagination. I can imagine after reading this that children will be dreaming of catching a garden fairy.
Tips on how to set a trap and catch a daddysaurus. But with all the ingenious plans, traps, lures, and snares, the most obvious way is pretty simple and guaranteed to work every time.

How to Catch a Daddysaurus is a colourful picture book by Alice Walstead. It is the latest addition to the ‘How to Catch’ series. The book is meant for children in the 4-8 years age category.
The Catch Club Kids, a group of sprightly children, attempts to trap a Daddysaurus — a mystical creature capable of such amazing acts of kindness, bravery, brilliance, and humour. It was heart-warming to read a book showing fathers in a positive light.
The illustrations by Andy Elkerton are fabulous—bright, colourful, and diverse. But since the book is meant for children in the 4-8 years age group, I feel the characters could have been more appropriate for the targeted audience group. Instead of a bunch of teens, pictures of younger kids would make it more relatable.
Kindness, keeping fit, taking care of things, the importance of good eating habits, appreciation for nature, working hard, and interest in STEM are a few of the topics covered.
The rhyming verses are fun, but early readers might find them slightly difficult to navigate through. The vocabulary is not very simple and thus gives younger kids an opportunity to learn unfamiliar words.
This book is a perfect Father’s Day gift!
Thanks to Sourcebooks Kids via NetGalley for the opportunity to read an ARC of this novel. All opinions expressed are my own.
"How to Catch a Daddysaurus" by Alice Walstead is an enchanting picture book that tells the story of the Catch Club Kids, a group of children on a mission to capture the elusive Daddysaurus. The book is targeted at children aged 4-10 and is perfect for sharing with dads on special occasions like Father's Day or Christmas.
The book is filled with silly rhymes and playful illustrations that will delight young readers and educators alike. The Catch Club Kids try to trap the Daddysaurus using all his favorite activities but soon realize that they may need a little bit of sweetness to capture him. The book promotes STEAM concepts, making it an excellent educational resource for parents and teachers.
One of the highlights of the book is the Daddysaurus himself. He is depicted as a mystical creature capable of amazing acts of kindness, bravery, brilliance, and humor. Children will love reading about his exploits and will be inspired by his positive attributes.
Overall, "How to Catch a Daddysaurus" is a charming and delightful book that will capture the imaginations of young readers. Alice Walstead has done an excellent job of creating a fun and engaging story that promotes important values like kindness, bravery, and humor. I highly recommend this book to parents, educators, and anyone who wants to share a heartwarming story with their little ones.
So disappointing that these horrible gender stereotypes persist and are now included in what was otherwise a fun series. Guess they ran out of holidays and are now scraping the bottom of the barrel. Celebrating moms and dads doesn't have to be chock full of gender stereotypes, but they really lean into it here. Daddysaurus is a provider for the family, he is busy all the time so you hardly ever see him, he has strong muscles and is the one who repairs the house. He has a video game chair. This stuff is toxic to boys. It's toxic to girls and nonbinary kids too. There are so many wonderful ways to be a dad--or a Daddysaurus presumably, unless the -saurus world these kids live in is a patriarchal dystopia where human children eventually transform into rigidly controlled dinosaurs whose only choice is to foster gender essentialism in the next batch of human children, or perish. Why can't all the loving and vulnerable aspects of dads be celebrated? At least: he's kind, he loves and comforts kids, and hey he's pink so yay? He gardens? It's not enough, especially when compared with the Mamasaurus title. Why can't bravery, math smarts, or home repair be celebrated in moms? We know why. Authors like these are contributing to the horrible sexism poor straight couples are plagued with. It's why Daddysaurus and Mamasaurus are going to get a divorce.
How to Catch a Daddysaurus by: Alice Walstead & Andy Elkerton . . “A legend is told of a creature near-perfect, known for a kindness and bravery that’s rare. He’s also loving, fun, patient, and smart — to catch him will take a trap with great care.” . . This is the next book in the “How to Catch” series. In this instance, the kids are out to trap the illusive Daddysaurus using all of his favorite activities. . . I read this with my almost 3 year old and 2 month old. It was well loved by my older son, especially since we’ve read several books in this series already. The illustrations were great at drawing him in and the rhyming kept him entertained throughout the story. I really appreciated the diversity in characters. Additionally. I love the Easter eggs hidden throughout, for example, the gingerbread man hung up on the wall. The blueprints and trap designs really speak to my engineering soul. . . The only complaint I have for this story is that it’s more subtle in its trap design in comparison with some of the previous books. My son and I love going through the traps and silliness the characters get up to in other books in the series. . .
As both a mom of two boys and a person who was worked in early childhood education for over 20 years, I am passionate about children’s literature. Having two boys, I am quite the connoisseur of dinosaur-themed books. The illustrations are absolutely adorable and make the story come to life! As I read I was delighted to see that the book text was not full of making fun of daddies and men. I enjoyed that it celebrated all of the positive characteristics of fathers. The only negative, to me, is the unevenness of the rhymes in the text. Overall, it is a cute addition to any library or child’s bookshelf.
The Catch Club kids are back but this time they are trying to catch a mystical creature called the Daddysaurus. The Daddysaurus is kind, brave, intelligent, and funny. Most of all the Daddysaurus is loving. Just like with other How to Catch stories the kids set all Daddysaurus's favorite things to trap him with. We love the Catch Club crew! My kids like to see what they come up with to make the traps. The illustrations were great, and we loved the story! This is a great read aloud and easy to follow.
Thanks to NetGalley and SOURCEBOOKS kids for the ARC. We cannot wait to share it with our Daddysaurus!
This was one of the most absolutely precious stories I have ever read in regards to how a dad loves his kids. The children go through great lengths in this picture book to catch Daddysaurus and talk about/think about all of the great things about him. My husband was on the couch while I read it to my dino-loving toddler and everything in the book matched perfectly to why we think he is our superhero of a Daddysaurus. I definitely want a physical copy of this to add to our shelves.
Thank you, NetGalley and SOURCEBOOK Kids for allowing me the opportunity to read and review "How to Catch a Daddysaurus".
Cute, but I felt like I was missing something. The general idea was nice - highlighting all the things Dads do to help keep the family and household going - but the rhymes didn't always flow well for reading aloud, and the story being told in the illustrations seemed a bit disjointed and didn't match the text. Plus, the illustrations show a whole host of child characters but only one Daddysaurus (but are we to assume that is Dad to all the kids?) Anyway, I'm sure children will enjoy this book as it is cute, and I liked that they left space at the end for readers to illustrate their own favorite Daddysaurus.
My son and I really enjoy the Catch series. I saw these available and needed to read them with him ASAP! The Catch a Daddysarurus story is so sweet and full of fun. This is the perfect book to gift dad for a special occasion! A great way to show appreciation for all that dads can do! The artwork is so vivid and eye-catching too!
Many thanks to Sourcebooks for an e-arc to review.
My son is already a big fan of the how to catch books and this one did not disappoint! We loved the colorful illustrations throughout and I always adore how there is so many different children that every kid will have one they relate to! The children work through their plan with crazy ideas and colorful pictures on each page. The story explains all about the daddysaurous and how they are amazing! My favorite part was “because of him, we know HEROES are real!” We have always enjoyed these books and this one is a perfect addition to any bookshelf!
Thank you Netgalley for an arc copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A group of kids are trying to catch the elusive Daddysaurous. They try to set traps while talking about all the things that Daddysaurus does for them. Hidden in the background of most of the pages you can spot the Daddysaurus going about tasks which makes for a fun little search for your child while reading.
The artwork is bright and colorful and the story is cute. My son enjoyed it and asked to read it again as soon as we were done.
Thank you to Netgalley and the author for allowing me to read this book. These are my own opinions.
A sweet book perfect for father's day or as a birthday gift for your own Daddysauras! I especially like the page at the end where a child can draw their dad.
However, I found the text a bit wordy and it felt somewhat awkward. Also, I felt the title wasn't truely reflected in the book as the majority of the story wasn't about catching the Daddysauras. The catching part was small and more of an afterthought.
This rhyming picture book follows a familiar rhythm and pace while telling how to catch a special creature: a daddysaurus. Part of a series, this book joins others like How to Catch a Garden Fairy, following similar formatting and style. Every second page has a short 4 line stanza. The font is fairly large and easy to read, and is supported by large, colourful illustrations. I think this would be a fun book for young readers and is likely to be a popular series. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to read and review this book!
How to Catch a Daddysaurus is an fun addition to the “How to Catch” series. A short rhyming book with fun illustrations, this one touches on positive qualities like kindness, appreciation, working hard and bravery. I love that there is a page at the end for the child to draw their own Daddysaurus. I would recommend this as a story for 3-7 year old children.
Thank you to SOURCEBOOKS Kids, Sourcebooks Wonderland and NetGalley for the chance to review an advance digital copy of this story. The opinions expressed are my own.
I received an electronic ARC from SOURCEBOOKS Kids through NetGalley. Walstead's latest will make a terrific Father's Day gift. The How to Catch Club sets out to catch the Daddysaurus by constructing a variety of traps. None of them work and they realize how easy it is to find a Daddysaurus. Highly detailed illustrations can be studied over and over to find all the trap parts and other pieces of this story. Be sure to search for the Daddysaurus hiding throughout. This book's text did not flow as smoothly as others in her series but will be a fun family read.
