Executive: A Guide to Becoming a Pirate Queen

Rate this book
Sometimes demon summonings go wrong, and that’s not always a bad thing...

Bryce Virra was a corporate executive in charge of the New Eden mining colony. But when a group of terrorists learn about her illegal weapons research, they decide to put a stop to it by sacrificing her to a demon. It doesn’t go well.

Now, with her captors dead and her secret out, Bryce can no longer rely on the corporation that was protecting her from a dark past. She’ll need to find a ship, form a crew, and learn to navigate the galaxy’s criminal underworld in order to survive.

But first she needs to negotiate a deal with the devil who was summoned to kill her. A deal that could change both of their lives forever.

Content strong profanity, violence, dark themes, kidnapping, torture, alcohol and drug use, implied sexual situations, heavy-handed trauma, mild piracy, poorly executed demon summoning, a rushed sapphic relationship, bad puns, really bad sex puns, dragon crime lords, werewolf gangsters, blatant spoiling of a fictional romance novel, and over representation/normalization of gay and/or queer characters

I will freely admit the reason I wanted to read this novel was because I laughed out loud at the content warning. “…a rushed sapphic relationship, bad puns, really bad sex puns…blatant spoiling of a fictional romance novel, and over representation/normalization of gay and/or queer characters.” How could I resist?

Bryce is an executive of a corporate mining community until two of her staff find out about her past spell casting which resulted in the destruction of thousands of lives. Her staff tried to summon a demon to destroy Bryce, however due to an incorrect incantation, a devil appeared instead. The devil, Thea, is on the run because of some nefarious gambling practices against a demon who holds grudges. Both Bryce and Thea decide their best course of action is to get off planet for awhile until it is safe to return.

This is an exciting and engaging read. Thea’s casual attitude about everything makes for some very funny dialogue and the really bad sex puns we were warned about. There is a wonderful supporting cast of characters which includes werewolves, a vampire and two kitsune.

The writing smoothly brings you into the story from the very first line and it maintains its high calibre throughout the novel. The pacing follows the plot perfectly in reflecting the action scenes and the softer and more intimate scenes.

Executive: A Guide to Becoming a Pirate Queen is everything you can imagine and so much more. It is a treat to read and rate at 5 out 5 stars.

This is a fast paced and witty fantasy-scifi! It really merges multiple genres in a unique and interesting way.

We've got a Mage Elven woman (Bryce) with a dark past, and the Demon-whoops I mean- Devil woman (Thea) that was summoned to kill her. There's magics and powers, with fantasy creatures; such as shifters, but all set in a Sci-Fi universe, with spaceships and interplanetary organizations playing typical controlling games.

There's a lot of great banter from Thea, she's strong and powerful, yet quirky and relatable. Bryce is similar, although more reserved, and seems more pragmatic. Neither can deny their attraction, and extreme flirtation.

It's all action right from the get go. It just loads you up to buckle in for the ride, and you have no choice but to go along and find out about these characters, where they are, what is happening and why.

It's fascinating and I found myself not wanting to stop reading at all! Because I needed to keep following to see what was happening next! We meet some other great characters along the way. Again there's great comradery that comes about between them all, and a lovely 'found family' vibe that I really appreciated.

It's very well written, and I would really highly recommend this to lovers of Fantasy genres and Sci-Fi genres too. It wasn't difficult to understand, you just had to have a bit of patience to let all be revealed organically - but it was done in a very satisfying way.

I have just finished “Executive, A Guide to Becoming a Pirate Queen” and I’m still trying to calm down enough to write some kind of intelligent review. Yeah, OK, that isn’t going to happen as I haven’t read a story that has so captured me since I can’t remember when. If I could give this 10 stars, I’d give it 11.

I can think of other stories and TV shows that match the caliber of “Executive” … and anybody from Netflix, Max, Prime, Sundance Now, CBS, or any other channel that puts a book out as a series production needs to seriously consider this author!

I am 71 years old, and have been inhaling sci-fi/fantasy since I was 10 yrs. old. This series will be golden! Please keep writing Jayde Russell!!

The characters are totally awesome, and the storyline, prose, the action, it all just flows! Any of you remember Firefly that was created by Josh Whedon? It got cut after one year (2002), much to the later regret of MANY involved in its production … here’s a spanking new replacement! Or “Guardians of the Galaxy”. “Executive, A Guide to Becoming a Pirate Queen” is just as fun with characters that are just as endearing.

I’d also compare this to the quality of writing and character development found in “The Grey Bastards (The Lot Lands series)” by Jonathan French, “Farscape” (TV 1999 – 2003) and yes, I’d even put it up there with “A Discovery of Witches” which was an original trilogy of books by Deborah Harkness that was eventually picked up and produced as a TV series by Amazon.

I mean seriously, you take a very attractive Elf who is also a spell caster, an equally attractive female Devil who is just plain dangerous, and two shapeshifting Foxes, all of who are desperate to get off planet, who suddenly find themselves in possession of a very sleek, top of the line, personal spaceship once owned by a Red Dragon, you put them together … and oh boy, you’ve got some fun time happening tonight!

There is a total disregard for human norms, LGBT readers take notice, this is totally fun, and sexy without being specific beyond a few kissing scenes, but with lots of hints and suggestive conversation. There is drinking, but hey … this is a Space Opera!

I’m getting older by the minute and I really want to know what misadventures are on the horizon! Please tell me there’s another book coming out in the next week or so?

This was a fun combination of fantasy, sci-fi, and romance. It doesn't take itself too seriously and there are plenty of funny moments interspersed with the action. There is a diverse cast, with plenty of queer rep. Multiple POVs. It's a fun little adventure. The content warnings for the book are hilarious and very accurate. I enjoyed all of the characters and having so many different POVs gave us a bigger insight into everyone that we just couldn't have gotten otherwise.

The romance is pretty sweet and wholesome for the most part. Nothing spicier than kissing and innuendo. Bryce and Thea are a fun couple and definitely bring the uhaul trope to life. They are at times sickeningly sweet with each other, and I feel like we don't get enough of that in either sci-fi or fantasy, so it was an extra fun change of pace.

This feels like it is teeing off for a decent length series. I'm looking forward to the next books.

Interessting worldbuilding: Cyberpunk meets Magic with gods and demons, but combined well.

Real feeling characters with great dialogue, banter and believable negotiations.

Well made PoV swaps. Basically the chapters are out of the perspective of the most interesting person, but following the same storyline. So you get new opinions and thoughs from everyone involved.

I loved it. Onto the next one.

I received an ARC (well, there’s nothing advanced about it since it was published last year, so… RC?) for free, and I’m leaving this honest review voluntarily. 4 stars.

This was a really fun read. Intense too. And it had a few surprisingly deep moments. It kinda reminded me of Helluva Boss in that regard: a lot of cute banter and jokes and violence, but serious and emotional when it needed to be.

Aside from that, it was very well written. I did catch a few typos, but they were funnier than irritating, honestly XD. I mean, maybe it was just the vibe of the book that had me all giddy, but in the context that it was, confusing ‘soles’ for ‘souls’ had me giggling like a kid that just got away with stealing a dozen cookies.

It really left me wanting more, which is awesome for me because I found the this book through the second installment while checking for new ARCs to read. So… yeah, you bet I’m about to download that one right now.

I’m on a roll with all these books; I wonder if Booksirens does a pre selection or if me being so critical before downloading (I really don’t like DNFing ARCs) is paying off, because I haven’t read a bad book from them. Given, it’s only been three but…

Whatever… good reading!

“Executive: A Guide to Becoming a Pirate Queen” (1st in a series) by Jayde Russell. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Genre: High Fantasy/Space Opera. Location: Space: New Eden Mining Colony, and the planet Drassun. Time: Alternative future. Note: LGBTQ+ inclusive

Bryce: “I had been poisoned, kidnapped, tortured, nearly sacrificed to a demon, and even had a dragon steal all my money just so he could hand me a one-hundred-million-credit luxury yacht.”

Corporation executive Bryce Virra (elf & academic mage) runs New Eden Mining Colony, and does illegal weapons research on its space station. If she doesn’t, the Corporation will purge the entire colony. She’s captured by anti-Corp ‘freedom fighters’ to be a demon sacrifice. They summon a demon, but get Thea (an imp) instead. And Thea saves Bryce. Now Bryce and Thea work together to find a ship, form a crew, and navigate the galaxy’s criminal underworld.

Author Russell adds kitsune crew, dragon crime lords, werewolf gangsters, and vampire accountants to the mix. She includes dark themes, snarky humor, piracy, and lots of puns. “Bad puns, really bad sex puns” (I’m quoting Russell here.)

Pay attention because chapters alternate narration between 6 characters. Luckily, chapters are labeled. The plot is women warrior space and magic fun, but near the end it switches to a battle-heavy narrative. Russell adds a sweet love-at-first-sight trope between elf and imp. I love the little “Easter Eggs” like the nod to the towel from Hitchhiker’s Guide.

Russell fills her book with sassy, smart-mouthed characters who support each other. It’s space opera populated by high fantasy magical characters. It’s the beginning of a series, I’ll be reading each book, and it’s 4 stars from me.🌵📚💁🏼‍♀️ Thank you to BookSirens and Jayde Russell for this copy.

I really wanted to love this, but found the first half of it more tedious than I'd have liked largely due to the romance angle which was pushed hard. It's not a romance novel, but it felt like it was trying to be one in the first half which detracted from the main plot - which is in fairness, damn good. This is going to be a very individual complaint, as I'm a fan of the romance being in the background rather than front and centre, regardless of whether it's straight or queer and this was very much in my face to a distracting degree.

That said, there's a really good hook behind the romance. The writing style is funny and the characterisations are great. It's genuinely a good book, which is why it's so aggravating that the romance was so heavy handed. We open the novel with our devil Theo - definitely not a demon, don't even try it - being summoned out of a sticky situation involving illicit gambling and about to become quite definitively dead into another sticky situation involving a tied up Bryce with the intent to kill her via demon. All good fun involving quite a few dead people and a devil demon with a huge crush on the woman she was meant to kill.

Things don't get less sticky. Bryce has a bounty on her head due to accidentally killing a few tens of thousands of people. Theo is a slightly homicidal devil with a crush. And they need a ship. Which entails working with a dragon and possibly killing a few more people whilst getting entangled with the local shifter community which is a whole ordeal in and of itself. It's a good plot, full of action and ideosyncratic characters and deftly merging science fiction and fantasy into a a read that is funny, entertaining and well paced.

When it actually focussed on the plot, I really enjoyed this. I was just sick and tired of the budding romance between Bryce and Theo, despite the puns. That said, Theo was absolutely my favourite character in this when she wasn't being lovestruck. She's powerful, witty and completely cavalier about everything including vast amounts of violence. She's a brilliant character. Bryce probably comes in second, although I was very fond of the doctor until things happened and the truth came out about him. The shifter pack were entertaining and the author did a really good job at depicting the feel of the pack.

All in all, this is a 3.5 rounded up to 4 for Goodreads because I don't have the heart to give it a 3. I have put the second book on my wishlist, but I'll wait for a sale as I suspect I'll get just as irritated at the romance second time round. But if you're looking for an action filled and genuinely entertaining read that genre bends science fiction and fantasy together with a lot of queer representation, I would recommend this.

Bryce has been hiding her past and working as an executive of a mining company. When a group of terrorist decide to sacrifice her to a demon after finding out about her illegal research it doesn't exactly go as planned. It does mean her secret is out and she has to find a new career, however. So she decides to become a pirate, which is easier than it sounds because of course she wants to have her own ship and crew instead of just being a regular pirate. Add in the devil/imp that was supposed to kill her but has problems of her own, not to mention the rest of her ragtag crew, she has to learn to work with and you know you are in for a fun read. I really like that there are Kitsunes in it as there are not many books with them as characters. The interactions between the characters doesn't take themselves too seriously and the whole thing kind of reminds me of the tv show Firefly.

Thea (devil) had just rigged a poker game in Hel when she was summoned to a circle, where she promptly broke free, killed the summoner, and made a pact with the bound and bloody elf, Bryce. As they work out who betrayed Bryce, the two enter a partnership in more than name, and join up with some other misfits for some off world space romps.

Based on its cover, this is not a book that I would have picked up if it wasn’t for this reading challenge. It was interesting, though I thought the many (5?) POVs were unnecessary and difficult to follow. I liked the awkward flirting between Bryce and Thea, the kitsune characters were fun, and the nanite healing technology made me think of Big Hero Six. There are dragons, werewolves, demons, succubi, oh. And space travel. Literally everything.

Executive: A Guide to Becoming a Pirate Queen is the first book in the A Guide to Becoming a Pirate Queen series.

Story: This series is absolutely incredible. It is COMPLETELY action packed, Urban Fantasy/Sci Fi, LGBTQ inclusive, with "punny" humor, VERY likable characters. ALSO, you have several paranormal elements such as dragons, werewolves, demons, succubi, devils. Think Firefly, maybe Guardians of the Galaxy vibes. It's been a while since I've enjoyed a good Urban Fantasy like this one. Definitely, going to be continuing this series!

Narration: Janine Granda did a fantastic job. She made quirky Thea and reserved Bryce, and all of the other characters seem so real! With multiple POVs, Janine made it so easy to distinguish between each character.

I wasn't sure about this book at first as the book started out fairly slow but by the time the ladies and the Kitsune took up becoming infamous Space Lady Pirates, I was absolutely sold! I would even place this among the ranks of Firefly or Dark Matter, for sure. I am definitely in for the long haul now.

I really enjoyed that it was mainly a female led cast of characters. I also really enjoyed the world building in this. Space leviathans are pretty terrifying.

I know that the crew have many more adventures in them and I definitely hope to read all of them in the coming future.

I received an advanced reader's copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

2.5 ⭐s

Executive: A Guide to Becoming a Pirate Queen held a lot of promise, yet failed to meet expectations. It fell into the trap of telling rather than showing the reader the events and the intricacies of the characters within the book. While it had its fun moments, it left a lot to be desired and read as if the author was desperate to get to the next paragraph. This does discourage me from picking up the next book in the series when it's released, but the authors' obvious enthusiasm and love for the story gives me hope for improvement.

what fun!

Honestly, I have not enjoyed a “space” adventure this much since Firefly/Serenity. Love the complicated main characters. The rest of the crew are going to be fun to get to know better too. Even the secondary characters are quite entertaining. I believe that this is my new favorite series. Cannot wait to continue the adventure. Brava Jayde Russell, very well done!

A interplanetary corporate executive ends up turning to piracy when she becomes hunted by mobsters and set upon by an assassin. This one's an unusual story, a bit pirate, a bit romance, a bit LGBTQ, a lot of suspense and even funny in a lot of places. I sometimes found it hard to follow, but it was an interesting read.

This book I read so fast, I couldn't put it down. It has bad jokes, ass-kicking devils (never call her a demon!) and a story that keeps developing.
