Edgewood Elite rule this town, but that doesn’t mean they can rule me.
After my dad goes missing, my family falls apart. News of an inheritance from a long-lost relative gives us the restart we need. At least, that’s what I think until we get there.

Edgewood Academy is ruled by the town’s four heirs.
Wes, broody and stuck up, wants me run out of town. He never misses an opportunity to tell me he thinks I’m trash and don’t belong.
Wyatt, the jokester who wants to possess me, doesn’t take no for an answer. From day one, he told me I would be theirs. He looks at me like he wants to fuse our souls.
Lev, silent but edgy, his calculating indifference runs hot and cold on the best of days. I don’t know if he wants to own me or destroy me.
Owen, dark and depraved, I don’t know what happened in his past, but his darkness seeks out my darkness.

Whatever the heirs have in store for me pales to the real reason I was brought here. A deal made long ago locked me into a deadly game.

Will I survive this Twisted Selection?

Twisted Selection is book one in a three-part slow burn why choose dark school bully romance series. Meaning the main character will end up with more than one love interest. As the series progresses, so will the level of darkness.
It is an 18+ series with profanity, feisty heroine, bullying, obsessive and possessive themes.

Really bad writing and zero nuance in the “relationship”. One hero is obsessed with her day one for no reason and another one hates her because she’s “unworthy”. Neither makes sense. The others are indistinguishable. There is extreme sexual degrading in all sex acts. They fuck around with a bunch of people, not the obsessed guy though, he just slips into her bedroom at night and molest her in her sleep and she somehow doesn’t know?? Ridiculous. She’s all blushes and confused next day at school. Come on!
That’s just the relationship stuff. The plot makes no sense either. Not worth anyone’s time.

The way this book took over my whole entire life for the last 48 hours, don't ask me if I'm okay/how i am or if I've slept because the answer Is NO! I am not okay, and I have not slept the book hangover the men in this book gave me is real! This is dark so check all the things you know you should be checking.

in this book you will find:
why choose
forced proximity
knife play and torture
abduction
forced marriage
steamy scenes
bully romance

I am utterly obsessed!! Ariah is our FMC and she is the only provider trying to keep her family together after her father goes missing and her mom has given up on her family. not only is she in a new school but she is forced into a legal contract or else she could lose everything she cares about.

gahh and the men in this book yes please! they might be hateful, murdering, and possessive but damn are they hot af! if you loved Hell house by Dakota Wilde or The Ritual by Shantel Tessier, then this is your next dark romance read!

very lacking, no chemistry between characters really, and the writing was subpar imo. and what was the point of giving her siblings when she never even takes care of them? like we only saw three scenes total (not kidding) of her siblings and she’s supposed to be the “responsible caretaker” 🤡

Okay, so considering this is a debut novel, it’s not bad. It kept my interest throughout, despite some issues, which is saying a lot. I’d say it might be 3.5 stars but I just can’t round up to 4. Plenty of other people have rated this 4 or 5, and I didn’t find it as amazeballs as they did.

The writing is… okay. Thankfully the grammatical errors aren’t abundant, so I can gloss over that part. The biggest issue is probably all the periods when they should actually be commas or semicolons. Makes it a bit choppy.

What annoyed me to all heck was the amount of brand dropping (you know, like name dropping) and while I’m all for a well aimed reference, I don’t need 50 of them per chapter. Ok, maybe I exaggerated a little, but there are too many. I don’t need to know every song and the artist that someone listens to. I feel it takes away from the story and is more ‘telling’ than ‘showing’, but that’s just me.

It’s pretty cliche that the badass main girl always wears band tshirts and Docs or Chucks and the mean girl wears Louboutins or Jimmy Choos. Almost without fail, like it’s a requirement to mention, multiple times. At least I didn’t have to read about every single guy outfit, so there’s something.

And maybe this was a personal shoutout, but Ariah mentioning reading Toxic Creek by KC Kean was kind of corny. Again, maybe a me thing. But I digress.

This book is so full of tropes you can’t step anywhere without crunching over one. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially considering most of these RH and/or dark academy books are all somewhat formulaic. I kind of expect it at this point in my reading, and since I’m addicted to this kind of stuff for better or worse, I clearly don’t have a huge problem. If an author can insert a little of their own flair and creativity to mitigate the abundance of trope, that’s when the book is great (not literary great, but great for this genre). This book was not great, alas, but it was okay. Is okay the same as good? Jury’s still out on that one.

Ariah as a MC was… fine. I got the whole ‘I’m not skinny’ thing, so I really didn’t need to be constantly hit in the head with that fact. The guys were okay, though I feel their personalities could have been a little more distinct from each other. Maybe that’s just me nitpicking though. Ariah’s insta best friend was a little on the annoying side, mostly because their dialogue together got on my nerves. Maybe most teens these days talk to each other in a similar fashion, but after just meeting each other? Not in my day, that’s for sure.

Sam, the mean girl, is about as cliche as they come, and I found her character not even remotely interesting. Maybe that was the point. Don’t know, don’t care. Everyone else was just kind of there, a prop so to speak.

Lots of trigger warnings for those that need them. I don’t have any, but I can recognize the need to know if you do. I’ll be reading the rest of the series, assuming things don’t derail too badly. Here’s hoping they don’t!

What did I read?

It begins as your usual bully high school romance but then there're explicit torture scenes and rough sex scenes (the characters are all 18 except for one who's 22 I think). Still 90% of the dialogue is unreal and makes these 18 years old sound like they're 13. I thought I read a co-written book not gonna lie, the writing is so different and makes the story choppy.

There's an instant BFF (is it the new insta love trend in romance?), a mean girl that needs to see a therapist, and 4 (5 in the next book) that also need to see a professional.

The main character Ariah is as dumb as a bag of rocks. She isn't bothered by the fact that her former teacher literally moved to the same tiny town and high school as her. Even if she's not aware of the secret society, it's creepy, specially as the teacher is not the nicest to her.
Same for her mother, she's not anxious by her long absence when she mentions that her mother only disappeared for a few days.

The secret society is the stupid thing ever. I read a lot of secret societies with really dumb rules but this one takes the cake.

I don't know if I'll bother with the sequel.

Academy bully books are my absolute favorite and Twisted Selection did NOT disappoint! Ariah is the perfect badass, plus size FMC and in this why choose romance you meet the heirs who are all just *chefs kiss*. (Who doesn’t like their men to be killer alphaholes?)

On top of the drool worthy spice, you have the drama of a secret society and all things that are involved. This slow burn did not disappoint and I am dying to read what P.H. Nix has in store for us!

I guess I’m the wrong audience for this book because I can’t tolerate any of the love interests. Maybe Wyatt at a push. But seriously, sexually assaulting someone you’re torturing and getting off on it? Degrading women? Am I supposed to swoon? Meh. They were so one-dimensional that I could barely tell their POVs apart most of the time.

The plot seemed to be going around in circles, with the same thing happening every other day. Even the dialogue felt repetitive.

I did like Ariah at times, but she had a bizarre insta-friendship that seemed to come from nowhere, and they spoke to each other like they were 13 years old. I had to skim most of their dialogue because it was too cringeworthy.

This one wasn’t for me.

why is everybody over-explaining everything in this book?

“I put my jet black Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ with full-length jet orange racing stripes in drive”

ok bro??? and why are these people at the council asking 17/18-year-old boys to investigate some murder happening in the school like they’re some kind of detective? where’s the police in this town?? nonexistent.

despite being kind of annoyed when reading this, there are some points where it's pretty entertaining. so i’m gonna read the next book because that cliffhanger made me curious about what's to come.

although i enjoyed this book, there was definitely some things that just missed the mark for me. i love man obsessed and a lot of the other tropes, but i just wish the build up was a little better. i’m seated for the series though, because overall i just really enjoy the authors writing.

If you were looking for a new dark bully high school romance series to sink your teeth into, Twisted Selection is an excellent choice! It is a great addition to the available books in this sub-genre – filled with the morally grey MMCs we have come to love, a FMC who can hold her own, and a secret society that pulls the strings behind the scenes.

It does not skimp on the inner demons. In this case, the men are much closer to black than grey, but that doesn’t make them any less desirable. Each has been formed by experiences in their past that have made them possessive, controlling, untrusting, or untouchable, but they are all filled with anger. Their sights are set on the FMC, Ariah, when she turns up in their exclusive town. She is someone they should not want, cannot want, cannot have. They must find a wife, someone they can control, not this willful creature who just walked into their world and turned it on its head.

I loved Ariah. She can hold her own both physically and mentally. Before his disappearance, her father gave her extensive hand-to-hand combat training that she kept up in his absence. She has taken a lot on her shoulders, assuming the role of sole caregiver for her three siblings now that her mother has also left. Her stubbornness to create stability keeps her taking the abuse at the school even when she should leave, though her pigheadedness and refusal to back down in a fight don’t hurt.

I would have preferred less emphasis on her body type – I realize there is a big push for body positivity, which I am very behind, but the boys’ internal monologues re: the size of her thighs, butt, and breasts got tedious. Yes, she is a very hot, curvy girl, but she was SO much more! She was in several AP classes and funny AF, but almost all they thought about was how lush she was and how she made their d!cks move. I was happy that Ariah NEVER disparaged how she was but owned up to how amazing she was all around.

It is a slow-burn romance between the FMC and the MMCs, with Ariah being completely innocent before meeting the boys. The MMCs are far from celibate and engage in sexual activities with others before committing to Ariah; they are entitled little man-wh0res and take advantage where it is given (which we have come to expect from these types of stories).

Be prepared for an epic cliffhanger. One that will have you cursing under your breath because you cannot believe the author left you there. It’s totally worth it, and I cannot wait for the next book.

Well first there’s more plot holes than Swiss cheese, major inconsistencies (Lev had 5 eye colors) and the biggest issue is rather than TELLING the supposed love of their lives what’s going on they instead break her heart. They’re supposed to be a super elite society but keep getting played by the mean girl and it’s so obvious but they never connect the dots.

The dialogue sounds like a super hero comic book, there’s kidnapping, torture, kidnapping, torture, constantly finding the traitors (ie everyone), more super hero dialogue about protecting the h who they never manage to protect. Very repetitive.

I also didn’t understand how at 265 lbs the guys just tossed her around like she was 150. I’ve been that heavy, so I just don’t see it, especially when she’s almost 8 months pregnant with twins so is closer to 290. I love the inclusion of a real curvy girl, but it has to make sense.

⚠️ SA, incest, graphic torture

PH Nixs debut book and I gotta say - I really enjoyed it!

Dark bully romance has become very popular which is good news if you like that kind of read - which I definitely do! But it can also be a hard genre to try and attempt so for this book to be a debut novel? Well freaking done!!!

Ariah has moved to a new town - again - and has been left on her own which is bad, but considering she has three younger siblings to take care off? Man, that makes my blood boil!!
She's feisty, she's hard-working, she's funny and she's pure fierce! So when the five heir's of the town take notice, she should run - or maybe they should 😏 lol

It's a good read, an intriguing storyline, intriguing characters, banter and secrets, I loved it!

If I could give this book more than 5 stars I absolutely would! Read your trigger warnings but holy moly I didn’t know knife play would be so hot 🥵 🤣. Ariah “Riri” is now who I inspire to be on the daily, freaking bad ass! Don’t even get me started on the men in this—- like 🥵🥵🥵🥵🔥🔥🔥! If you’re a dark romance lover this is for sure one you need to get your hands on, it’s in the realm of dark academia but soooooo different. The cliff hanger left me with my mouth wide open! Obsessed and can’t wait to read the second book! P.H Nix hit it out the park for her debut novel. I love her writing style and her descriptions are amazing. I can’t say enough! 3.25 stars. Overall I found the story interesting and a quick read, but there were a lot of flaws with this book. Poor writing, poor character development and progression, and way too many pop culture references. At one point the MC says events happening feel like a bad teen drama on tv and that’s pretty true for the whole book. I’m interested in the story so maybe if book two is one sale I’ll pick it up, otherwise I think I’ll pass.

Intrigue but slow pace

2.5 stars

Great story premise, contracts and promises, and a diversity of bad boy heroes: some sweeter, Wyatt and equally compelling Owen; and some not so sweet, given to a bit of cruelty: snobby Wes and a less mean Lev. These sardonic bad boys, whether disposed to affection or bullying, were drawn to the confident Ariah. I enjoyed the mixed of characters, particularly the fierce Ariah and her closest friend. Nice diversity thought I didn't care for the insensitive use of the term "dreds" rather than locs.

While I was drawn to the unfolding storyline: the character, the secrets they were uncovering, the wife selection, and playing against family obligations, it was needlessly slow to develop. It was also not dark. And while the characters' sexual tension was tangible, the spice was almost absent, as in no sex at all. No, thank you. I liked the other girl drama though.

Overall, an intriguing plot line and great characters, but the writing poorly progressed the pace. There is slow burn, and there was this.

I don’t even know where to start, other than just to say this book is absolutely phenomenal. It was exactly what I have been looking for. I have been in a reading slump, for lack of better words, and other than my go to authors, I had not found anything new that really caught my attention. This just changed the whole game. 😍

In no particular order, there were several things that I really liked about this book.

📌 The lead female (Ariah…which I LIVE her name, completely unrelated) is not a pushover. She holds her ground. Regardless of who she meets it does not change her character. So many times I have read books where when the female meets male, she turns into mush or she softens and it’s very cliché. I did not find that here. Ariah has the same snarky, tough personality the entire book.

📌 Taking that step further, I feel like the progression of events was very believable. When Ariah does start to crush, she did not instantly just fall in love. She pushed back and she made them work for it. She did not immediately fall. Too many books have felt rushed to have the female and male characters fall in love. I feel like P.H. Nix really took her time to develop the relationships in this book. So it made the story more relatable and a lot more believable.

📌 Next, the character development was on point. It was very easy to connect with these characters. This book is written in multi POV. Sometimes building that connection can get fuzzy because you’re seeing it from multiple sides. But not here. The time was given to develop each character to really give you an inside look about them. So it made it very easy to know these characters and to fall in love with some 😍. Obviously with a series, we don’t know everything…yet.

📌 The mystery element. This is what keeps you turning the page so quickly. Or at least kept me turning the page so quickly. There’s something going on in this town. We are only given breadcrumbs at a time, trying to piece it all together. Writing a review and trying to give an overview (especially after reading it) would be difficult without giving away something. It’s best to not know and get the FULL experience. What this author has done is given small details at just the right time and then ends with an explosion, that only leads to more questions!

📌 Normally I’m a reader who loves my spice! P.H Nix gives us a sample but doesn’t give us the whole experience. Not yet. In said “samples” you can definitely see that she has the ability. What she has done, is fill the readers with anticipation. A VERY slow burn, that truly expect when the fuse does ignite we will get one heck of a firework show 💥 (trying to keep it PG for Amazon 😉).

💎 I’m sure there is more that could be said. I truly loved this book! So much I could not put it down. That cliffhanger had me screaming. I highly recommend it. I honestly think this going to be a great series and I’m already looking forward to future books!

🚨 TRIGGER WARNINGS 🚨
This book does have some things that could make some readers uncomfortable. So please know what you’re reading before you start. Check those trigger warnings!

Good lord, this book was so damn captivating! I suggest reading the trigger warnings before diving into this. Let’s dig in..

I love a good dark high school bully romance especially with why choose & a secret society. You got me sold!

We have our outspoken beautiful badass FMC Ariah who’s the only family her younger sister and twin brothers have since her father went missing and her mother took off. She’ll do anything to protect her family even if it means literally signing her life away in a legal contract that has strict set of rules she needs to follow if not she can lose everything.
Wyatt and Owen are just ugh 😩🥵
I need to fan me down a few times because they get me all worked up but in a good way. 😏
Now the other men get on my nerves. They want Ariah “Riri” as much as the other two but they are being delusional. 😓
I’m hoping I’ll love them in the 2nd book lol. 🫣
What also kept me intrigued was the mystery element. I need to find out who’s the “bad guys” are asap and the ending made me put some pieces together & it got me so pumped for the next one.
One thing I know for sure is Riri is a fighter and will do anything to come out on top with her family.
I’m a big fan of spice but the slow burn in this is just done so right and the little teasers here and there got my lady parts all jittery for the next book in this series.
I can’t wait!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️

This book is a freaking rollercoaster! It has so many things I love in a story: Strong FMC who isn't going to roll over for anyone, great distinction in the guys, a secret society, weird cult-y traditions, a mean girl you just love to hate, a perfect best friend, and adorable kids.

Aria is a fantastic main character. She is strong, sassy, and opinionated, but she is also vulnerable, taking care of her siblings, dealing with a lot of inner turmoil, and trying to figure out what is happening in this weird new town she finds herself in.

The guys are all so different which I love in a book because it's disappointing when you can't tell them apart.

Wes - All alpha man, broody, jerk extraordinaire who thinks he's in charge. He doesn't want Ariah there and makes sure everyone knows it.
Lev - Stoic computer guy with a darkness that I hope to learn more about. He is with Wes in his suspicions about Ariah.
Wyatt - my favorite character in the book, he's funny and silly, but he also deadly and ruthless. He has feelings regarding Ariah and future plans.
Owen - dark and intriguing, brutal, takes charge when necessary and sides with Wyatt.

Shay is the best friend everyone needs. We could all use a Shay. Lots of mysteries in this town. Nobody is talking, but everyone seems to know what's happening except Ariah. Cliffhanger alert, but I'm not mad at it.

What a ride

This is not what I was expecting when I started this book.

Five heirs, five women selected, siblings, a missing father, a worthless self-serving mother, and the school queen entitled b is a recipe for a whole lot of snarky drama.

Ariah and her siblings find themselves in a posh community where a group of founding five control everything, or so it seems. But no one is prepared for the sharp tongue, take no nonsense that is Rhi.

Speculation, assumption, bullying, and an unseen organization has everyone looking at Rhi trying to figure out if and how she plays a role in the destruction that is falling on Edgewood.

With two of the five firmly convinced she's the one for them, one who's slowly changing his tune, one I'm unsure where his loyalties stand with "spitfire", and one who try as he might continues to put his foot in his mouth thinking she's some weak minded female.

The book ends on a cliffhanger. Check trigger and content warnings. A lot of tension and buildup but low on the spice which is to be expected.

"For every reader who likes their characters in shades of gray."
I love this book🫶!

☆Wyatt say, “I like you looking at me Riri, it makes me feel like you’re thinking about me using those thighs as a scarf around my neck.”
I ask, “Did you just objectify me, sir?"
"Yes. Call me sir again. I can be your master"

☆The day is flying by, and I only have one more class with my love. She doesn’t know it yet, but she’s mine. I’ve been watching her all summer.

Wyatt ! Wyatt ! Wyatt !
Marry me? He is my favorite among the MMCs. He goes on my bookboyfriend list.

I think there are five MMCs in the book, not four.

I was very drawn to the book from the beginning and I can't wait for the next part🫶💕. And this end! I screamed because the book ended like that. (I actually figured out the plot twist from this book)
