10 • Survival Instinct (part 1 of 2) • 42 pages by Edward M. Lerner Good. Sequel to "Presence of Mind" from Feb '02 Analog where viruses had infected some VR equipment and the users of that equipment. Doug has gone into consulting for Colonel Glenn Adams. Most of the story has focused on Prof. AJ Rosenberg and his work with artificial life, AL. The programs are replicated, mutated and the best selected for the next round.
62 • For Love of Amanda • 12 pages by Timothy Zahn Excellent/VG. Sigmund travels 200 years into the past to hang around soon to be famous pianist Weldon Sommers.
80 • The Trouble with Grampa • 6 pages by Arlan Andrews OK/Good. Grampa and Gramma choose to go to Heaven rather than take rejuve treatments that will keep them at their present old age. Uncle Ryan has to explain this to young Andrei. A really clever idea but made into gimmick.
88 • Thumbkin, Caeser, Princess, and Troll • 8 pages by Mary A. Turzillo Good+. Humor. Tom Grand was bred to be an astronaut. Diminutive size meaning less weight. Society changed and the space program stopped. Not discouraged, Tom got his degree at one of the few remaining nanotechnology programs.
96 • In Her Image • 12 pages by Michael A. Burstein OK/Good. A now old movie actress licensed the rights to her avatar. She is fighting a legal battle so that the studio will no longer be able to make movies with her image.
108 • Partner in Crime • 22 pages by Rajnar Vajra Very Good/excellent. A serial killer is watching another prisoner in an escape attempt, and decides to help out. Exciting adventure. The only problem is does the reader really want to root for a serial killer to escape? Even one that's been treated with a partner that won't let him kill any more.
