Four magicians abuse their magic to gain power in a corrupt Victorian inspired world.
In the Kingdom of Verchiél only a handful of people known as Incarnate can use magic. Equally feared and respected, they are revered as saints and indulged like gods. But the sudden deaths of Verchiél’s rulers unleashes a power struggle between four Incarnate, each seeking power to fulfil their own desires.
Gabriel, a charismatic socialite who takes darker paths to avoid slipping back into powerlessness.
Zoe, the daughter of a disgraced merchant, determined to carve a new path for her life.
Niklas, an exiled prince trying to escape the ghosts of his past.
Silje, an assassin who will stop at nothing until she’s seized the adoration she has always been denied.
Infighting and betrayal run rampant as each becomes worse than their problems in order to solve them.
AN INCARNATION OF SHADOW AND LIGHT is a solid New Adult debut strong for its world building, unique magic system, but most importantly for the diverse and intriguing cast of morally gray characters. This is a read I especially recommend to fans of A Darker Shade of Magic and Six of Crows!
I was a huge fan of the world building and unique magic system. I love the sun and moon dichotomy, so I was extremely pleased with the whole aesthetic. But most of all I loved that magic wasn’t a simple accessory in the plot. It played a pivotal role in the political intrigue, especially since depending on the location, having magic is perceived in a completely different way. This story was compelling, high stakes and full of plot twists! The characters, however, were the book’s greatest strength. An Incarnation of Shadow and Light counts on a diverse, morally gray cast, with great LGBTQIA+ representation (including bisexual, lesibian and non binary characters). I especially enjoyed characters like Ada Vard, an ambitious woman with an instinct for profit and one of the most influential conlords, and Gabriel Capello, the Incarnate of the Moon, who delivered charm, ambition, and a vein of ruthlessness.
All my friends who don’t love cliffhangers will be happy to know the story wraps up nicely, although there are some loose threads that hint at a possible sequel. Which I hope is true because I’m very much looking forward to see more of the dynamic between certain princes.
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. All opinions are my own.
This was such a gripping read, it starts so fast paced and action packed I couldn't put the book down to sleep!
I had major Game of Thrones vibes mixed with Six of Crows from the story 😍 it has lots of political intrigue and power struggle! The Incarnate are magical beings who can summon their powers either at night (moon Incarnate) or at day (sun Incarnate). Gabriel and Zoe are the Sun and Moon incarnates of the kingdom of Verchiel, and groomed to take the position of King and Queen of Verchiel. That is, until a third incarnate shows up at the kingdom challenging them for the throne.
Niklas, the prince of Bjordal, is also an Incarnate of the Moon. However his country doesn't see incarnates as a blessing and something to praise, but as a horrifying sin that must be cleansed from the land. Now he fights for his right to rule not Bjordal, but Verchiel. The story is told in multiple points of views from various characters and separated in parts. Expect a lot of morally gray characters, all with their own desires and motives and a magical world building!

Six of Crows meets A Darker Shade of Magic…and now that I have your attention, add this book to your TBR!
An Incarnation of Shadow and Light is such a fantastic NA debut with super interesting world building and a great magic system. I was hooked and curious from page one! I immediately picked up on the Six of Crows vibe and definitely think that if you love Six of Crows (and our fave crow Kaz Brekker), you will devour this book.
The magic system felt so fresh, yet also familiar enough that I didn’t feel confused and overwhelmed trying to figure out this world. I loved the sun and moon dichotomy and really enjoyed seeing the major role that magic took in this story. It wasn’t just “there”…it played its own important role.
It’s also important to note that this book has great representation! And what I loved is that it didn’t feel like “representation just to a check a box,” it felt completely natural. Which is how it should be! You almost don’t even realize it’s there because it’s simply who these characters are. Which I think is really important for representation…that it feels so natural that you don’t immediately notice that it’s there (if that makes sense?).
If you’re looking for a fast paced, twisty, magical book, I highly recommend An Incarnation of Shadow and Light! FYI: it wraps up satisfyingly but leaves room for a potential sequel.
Thanks to the author for gifting me a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
If Six of Crows and The Atlas Six had a baby, this would be it! We have dark (Moon) and light (Sun) Incarnates. Gabriel, The Son of the Moon's magic activates at night and Zoe, the Daughter of the Sun's magic activates during the day. Within the first few chapters, we are met with a plot twist when a supposed dead heir turns up at the new Incarnates' ascension, threatening their rule. There is magic, weapons and a fight for the throne - enough to have you turning the pages.
With LGBTQ+ rep and magic bound to the Sun and Moon, Christianson delivers a story that will have the reader devour the multiple POVs. Not only can you judge this book by its cover, but its contents deliver. Set in a Victorian-inspired world, I would time travel to this world within the blink of an eye and join Zoe and Gabriel. Niklas is one of those characters I have a love/hate relationship with, perhaps more love than hate. I am crossing my fingers for a sequel because even though the story didn't end on a cliffhanger, I'm still wondering what new adventures lay ahead for the characters. The character art in this book is absolutely amazing and was my favourite part of the book, the entire layout and design are aesthetically pleasing.
- The world of Verchiél - Power struggle - Magic bound to the Sun and Moon - Multiple POVs - New Adult Dark Fantasy - Morally grey characters - Winter solstice
I feel this book deserves more hype and that many readers would appreciate the magic system. If you enjoy fantasy this book needs to be on your TBR.
Thank you to the author for gifting me a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is perfect for anyone wanting a quick and easy fantasy read. The magic system I thought was highly intriguing! The action is fast-paced and the world-building I found easy to understand. Characters are likable however I do think they could’ve been fleshed out better. They just came across as very juvenile when most are in the mid to late 20s. This is a “me” thing probably because the writing style in particular isn’t my cup of tea.
Overall, it’s enjoyable for what it is if this particular story is up your alley!
Going into this, I found myself immediately intrigued by the characters, the magic system, and the queernormative world. It took me a little while to get a grip on the story, but even in my initial confusion it was already a really fun and interesting read. Once I finally had a good grasp of the characters and their motivations, it only got better. I found it so interesting to read from the perspectives of people who aren't all necessarily on the same side, which I feel is usually the case with multiple perspectives. All the characters were really fun to read about, and this book definitely has its funny moments as well. While I found the politics and world building on the complicated side, the writing was very accessible, which struck a good balance for me to stay engaged and keep enjoying it.
Thank you to Pride Book Tours and the author for a paperback copy in exchange for an honest review and promotion. All opinions are my own.
This book is described as four magicians abuse their magic to gain power in a corrupt Victorian country. And oh is this true. There’s been so many betrayals, poor choices and morals compromised for power. People who enjoyed Kaz’s bloodthirsty nature will like these characters, especially Gabriel who has shadow powers.
This is NA/Adult dark fantasy and the cast of characters is in their mid-late twenties. I really like that these characters were older. They all have experiences that have shaped them to be who they are and we’re really seeing it in the way they analyze others and make decisions.
I can’t decide who is my fave! I like them all but my top two are probably Zoe and Dabria. Honorable mention goes to Ada. I love these feral girls and their need for power. I’d love to see these characters in a sequel!
Also everyone was queer coded with most of the cast being some flavor of m-spec including Zoey, Gabriel, Niklas and Ada. Dabria says she doesn't like men on page.
Rep: queer Black cis female MC, white queer cis men MCs (two), white lesbian cis female MC, queer nonbinary side character, sapphic cis female side character, white cis female side character. CWs: violence, death, murder, death of parent, death of loved one, gun violence, injury/injury detail, medical content including magical healing, self harm, blood, emotional abuse, toxic relationship, grief, fire/fire injury, gaslighting, manipulation (magical mind control), alcohol consumption, confinement/imprisonment.
This book is good in the sense that the plot and world building are easy to understand, so it is not difficult to get into. However, the characters felt a little flat. There was a lot of potential to fully develop complex personalities for each of the four main characters, but it just wasn’t executed properly. The dynamics and relationships between the characters at times felt awkward and abrupt. There is a lot of LGBTQ+ representation in the book, which is nice. The plot seemed a little rushed at certain points, which prohibited me from really making an emotional connection with the story and the characters. Nothing truly excited me or kept me on my toes, but it would still be a great book for those trying to get into fantasy though because of its simplicity.
Favorite Quote: “I know it’s selfish wanting you to stay, but I don’t quite know what I’d do without you. You’re kind of my best friend.”
Special thanks to Hazel Book Tours and the author for giving me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely loved this book! It has a unique Magic system, great representation, morally grey characters and more! Its full of action and plottwists, absolutely amazing!
What if A Darker Shade of Magic and Six of Crows had a baby?
For some inexplicable reason, this was a combination I never considered before, but it makes sense! An Incarnation of Shadow and Light pulled me into the story from the very first line. “Gabriel was a terrible liar.” From that moment, I knew this character would hold my interest, and indeed he did, but the way that whole first scene was set up immersed me in the world and the magic system as well as the character. Once we moved to the second chapter, where we meet Zoe, and uncovered more of the magic system and the worldbuilding, I sensed I had a unique story in my hands. This feeling? I remember it vividly with A Darker Shade of Magic. The stories are very different, but what they have in common is the vividness of the world, and the magic that is unlike anything you’ve read. S.A. Christianson has that kind of prose style that is both direct and magical. It sucks you in.
Aside from that, this book also counts on a strong and diverse cast of characters. Among them all, Zoe is perhaps the one who is the most canonically good, though all thread the line of morally gray. Some more, others less, while there are others who may have some redeeming qualities but is evil. One character I found really fascinating was Niklas. At first he may seem like the darkest of morally gray characters, but that couldn’t be the farthest thing from the truth. He’s far more complex—a good guy who’s forced to do bad things, or at least that’s how I perceived him. I found that so fascinating.
The book wraps itself up pretty nicely, but there are a few loose threads and dynamics that have me hoping for a sequel. I really, really need a sequel!
I highly recommend this to fans of the series I mentioned above, to anyone who appreciates complex, morally gray characters, and for those readers who want to support a very promising debut with strong LGBTQIA+ rep.
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.
Not gonna lie, it took me a while to get through this one because it felt a little slow for me in the beginning but then I powered through the second half. Things really picked up and it was just one adventure after the other! These characters were a fun, crazy bunch to get to know! There wer some I loved, others I hated ahah.
This book had all the shadow & bone/ six of crows vibes, filled with morally grey characters, plot twists, adventures, locations and a unique magic system that was fun to learn about! If you love any of these things, you might want to pick it up!
Thank you @bookinfluencerscom and @sa_christianson for a copy of this book! ♥️
First of all, let's talk about how freaking gorgeous this cover is! The intricate design all over the book and even the art work inside of it is breathtaking 😍
You are immediately thrown into the action within the first few chapters that had me biting my nails thinking I knew who I was rooting for. But the more I read, the more I felt drawn to each character and their doings. So action packed throughout and a perfectly paced book. The magic system is so intricate and if you love fantasy + diverse characters, you HAVE to make this book your next read 🥰
Highly recommend if you enjoy: ✔️ Morally grey characters ✔️ LGBTQ+ rep ✔️ Unique magic system ✔️ Political struggles ✔️ Multiple POVs
Temporary dnf @p.270. I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would, but realized I just wasn't feeling it right now. Will give it another chance later.
This was such an easy read! I was gifted this book as an ARC for an honest review.
I loved the characters and the character development in this book. It was fast paced and had mind blowing twists I really did not see coming.
The world building was great as well, it really absorbed you in their world and I just couldn’t put the book down.
It’s also a very diverse book, it really included all members of the LGBTQ+ community without prejudices.
The reason it doesn’t get 5 stars is because I was a little disappointed in the romance department. It had a few pretty promising story lines but none of them really came fully out, it makes the ending open to a sequel - but I have no idea if there’s gonna be one.
Overall, I would recommend this book, I really enjoyed it.
What will happen if you suddenly lose the comfortable life that you have taken for granted? This is exactly what happens to Gabriel and Zoe and wow, let me tell you what an excellent start to this series!! They have been raised to become rulers since the day they were blessed with the powers of the moon & sun, but in the day of their coronation they find out they were not the only ones. Chaos & mayhem starts from page one as we enter into this high-stakes fantasy world where betrayal, vanity and ambition is part of these characters’ everyday life. And best thing of all, we get front row seats as we experience this story in multiple POVs! I promise, this is a fantasy you do not want to miss!! 😍🤎
Thanks to Hidden Hollow Book Tours, the publisher, and the author for the review copy. This review is honest and voluntary.
This is a story set in a corrupt and power-hungry Victorian-inspired world, where magic is both revered and feared in equal parts. At the heart of the story are four intricately crafted characters, each wielding magic and navigating their own moral complexities. Christianson masterfully explores the complexities of morality and the shades of grey that define each character's journey. They are all equally unlikeable and loveable in varied amounts. I really loved this aspect of the story.
Gabriel is a charismatic and hedonistic socialite who embodies the allure of power and indulgence, willing to tread darker paths to maintain his influence and control. His platonic life partner is Zoe. She is driven by a desire to forge her own destiny despite the constraints of her role. Niklas is looking to take power that was taken from him. He is haunted by his past but seeks purpose. Silje, his dangerous assassin and half-sister navigates the precarious balance between her desire for love and acceptance and her penchant for violence and revenge. Also - Silje is basically Villanelle from Killing Eve and I WAS HERE for it.
The richly imagined world-building adds depth the story, offering readers a varied tapestry of different kingdoms and cultures to immerse themselves in. This is a compelling exploration of ambition, populated by flawed yet compelling characters who grapple with their own demons and desires. With its intricate plot and morally ambiguous protagonists, this book is sure to captivate readers!
Thank you so much to the author for sharing a copy of her books with me on Bookinfluencer.com !!!!
“Feeling like they have something and actually having it are two entirely different things”
“He was desperate to remember anything other than the endless cold and Silje’s golden eyes”
This book was one of the best new adult fantasy stories I’ve read this year !!! A book that gives you the same vibes of “All of us Villains” and “Six of Crows”, where the corruption that comes with power completely blinds everyone trying to grasp it!! Zoe and Gabriel on one side and Niklas and Silje on the other … with some characters playing fondamentale part in the middle of it all!!! I absolutely loved it !! When there was less action, the author more than occupied the spaces in every page with characters’ dynamics and relationship. I felt like this book had a great representation too especially when it comes to demonstrate how much gender does not matter when it comes to romantic entanglements!!! I loved the fact that the author decided to surprise us when it came to presenting the characters, when there are not enough words to describe them, there are other forms of art !!!!! And there’s to say that the ending of this book highly surprised me !!!! I expect great things from this series and I truly hope I’ll have the chance to get to experience the sequel … which I need NOW !!!
“Dabria hadn’t fed the hunger. She was the hunger”
“I’m more than a king or a saint, or saviour, I’m your Incarnate and you’ll obey me or suffer the consequences”
One thing you can't call An Incarnation of Shadow and Light, is slow. The book throws you in the middle of a story, with little to no introduction. While that would usually annoy me to no end, it actually worked for this story! I read somewhere that it was a mix between A Darker Shade of Magic and Six of Crows, and after reading it, I wholeheartedly agree. ☀️ As the synopsis explains, the story mainly revolves around four characters. The only ones that can use magic, fueled by either the moon, or the sun. These aren't the only characters' POV you'll read though, there are other 'minor' characters, whose POV really adds to the story, because while you know who you're reading about, everyones loyalties change, or do they? 🤭 This was something I really enjoyed. I often predict endings to books, but this was one of the first books where I had no clue who was good or bad, and how the story was going to end. 🌙 Another thing I loved is that the story takes place in a queernormative world. There are no definitions like bisexual, non binary, lesbian. Everyone just is. It was really refreshing to read about a world where it's all just normal, something we could all learn from. ☀️ I really enjoyed this book, and while it is a standalone (as far as I can tell), I would love a sequel, where we could continue to see interaction between the characters, and continue the story!
Morally characters yes please! I am a sucker for that and representation. This title was a mix between Six of Crows and A Darker Shade of Magic... maybe sprinkles of Atlas Six.
The characters were different in so many ways but Niklas has me. The inner fight between good and evil and what needs to be always gets me with these stories. Zoe is another I really liked, witty and with a goal in her mind. No one is going to stop her, I think we're going to get tons of growth from her! I can't wait to see where these characters are headed! The representation in this book filled my heart, I love when authors include diversity not only as a side plot but well into the meat of the book.
We find ourselves immersed into a world with a fantastic magical system. Magic is far more important than we may think. The protocols and orders in this world were compelling. The aesthetic reminded me of ADSOM but yet it was still unique enough to take it's own stand.
This is a world I will definitely want to jump back into in book 2. I can't wait to learn more!
Huge thanks to the author for gifting me a beautiful copy! All opinions are my own.
From the jump, this story gave me all manner of Six of Crows + A Darker Shade of Magic vibes but all make it even more sinister.
This world is so unique and fun, and I was constantly on the edge of my seat to find out what happened next. There were a ton of lovable characters in this tale, some of which I started out despising only to end up loving them later. I’m always very impressed when this happens, and Christianson did a notably good job humanizing some very brutal, ruthless characters. All of our MC’s have a bone to pick with the world they exist in, and sometimes with each-other directly, despite the fact that their reasons for feeling the way they do are entirely different. I so enjoyed reading about each incarnate, and as the story went on, it only became harder and harder to predict where the conflict was going.
It’s hard to review this one without spoilers, but if you’ve been interested in: chaos kids who make terrible decisions but you can’t help but root for them anyway, shifting loyalties where even your favorites cannot be trusted, main & side characters with complex motives, & romantic tension where literally EVERYONE is queer and proud, you will want to pick this book up & thank me later!
S.A. Christianson is an author to watch, and you absolutely cannot miss by picking up An Incarnation of Shadow & Light!
This was a fun, fast-paced fantasy that kept me hooked with its intricate world building and intriguing magic system. The four Incarnate are humans gifted with powers, revered in some kingdoms and shunned in others. I loved the juxtaposition of Sun and Moon magic, where Sun Incarnate can use their powers in the day and Moon Incarnate can use their powers in the night.
As the story unfolds, the Incarnate fight and plot for power. The author did an excellent job of writing morally grey characters, as I often went back and forth between liking and loathing the Incarnates. The side characters were well-developed and I especially liked Dabria and Ada.
The novel wraps up the plot points quite nicely, but also plants some seeds that would potentially allow the story to continue n
𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲: morally grey characters, shadow and light magic (moon and sun magic), found family, grumpy & sunshine, knife to the throat, power struggles & political intrigue, diverse representation
Thank you to the author and Hidden Hollow Book Tours for providing me a copy of this book. This review is voluntary, and all opinions expressed are my own.
This book!! Seriously--Such a treat for diehard fans of the Six of Crows duology. Gabriel, Zoe, Niklas, and Silje are all so uniquely fascinating in their own special complexities, alongside a beyond fascinating magical systems pervading the plot, as well as a Victorian-steampunk setting. Add to the mix ample LGBTQIA+ representation and this is a perfect blend of so many of my favorite things to see in new adult fantasy. I will most certainly be adding a copy to my classroom library; I already know my high school readers will fall in love with this corrupt world and colorful cast of morally gray characters.
Thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts and opinions expressed above are entirely my own.
Thank you to Sapphire Ink Press and SA Christianson for providing me with a copy of this book. This is my honest review. - 4.5 rounded up to 5 - What do you get when you mix a diverse cast full of morally grey characters, a heaping serving of LGBTQIA+ rep, magical hijinks, and sass up the fucking wall? This amazing NA fantasy debut, that’s what! 🤌🏽 - Y’all, these characters are so charming! Even when they’re off doing ✨morally grey✨ things. The banter and the quick wit are off the charts! There’s not a single character that feels lackluster and I think that speaks volumes in a multiple POV book. - I like the world and the magic system that’s set up here. It feels very Grisha and Ketterdam-esque while still maintaining its own identity. There’s political turmoil and betrayal in spades 👀 And the magic! I like that there’s lore behind the Incarnate’s powers and that we still don’t know the full scope of their abilities. - I think this is the first in the series, but if it’s not, it was enjoyable either way! The storyline here reaches a satisfying conclusion, but there’s enough left open to keep you wanting more. I’d love to revisit these characters and see what off the wall shit they’re up to in the future. SA Christianson hit the ground running with this debut! I can’t wait to see what else she has up here sleeve. 🖤 - An Incarnation of Shadow and Light is available for purchase in ebook, paperback, and hardcover format. It is also available through Kindle Unlimited.
An Incarnation of Shadow and Light is such a fun and action-packed read.
The story itself was fast-paced and full of plot twists. It’s very interesting from the moment you start reading. The worldbuilding is amazing, and the magic system is very unique. The magic was such an important part of the story which made it so much more interesting and fun to read.
I fell in love with the characters, they were really well written and there’s a lot of representation that just feels natural and not forced at all.
Overall, it’s a 4.5 star read. If you’re looking for a book full of action, plot twists, magic and amazing characters, I’d recommend An Incarnation of Shadow and Light for sure.
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy of the book.
Another 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟book for me. So happy to have been one of the first to read this incredible book. I went into it as blind as possible, without knowing anyone’s opinion on it, and that made me enjoy it so much. I loved the characters, especially Gabriel <3 and his humour, and their friendships. The magic system in this book was very unique, which I loved, and every chapter grabbed my interest. Not once was I bored whilst reading this. Would highly recommend to those who love action-adventure, and would definitely reread it.
When I saw this book, I knew that I had to have it on my shelves!! Just look at the stunning detail of the moon phase on the front cover! And the bold contrast between the black and gold really stands out. It makes me think of all things magical and decadent and I absolutely love this!!
This book promised magic and majesty before I even opened it and we are given this four times over. In a world where magicians are revered as Gods, but just as much feared - when a power struggle erupts between 4 of the Incarnate all hell breaks loose on the world.
I've always been intrigued by morally grey characters, so it was amazing to have 4 hugely contrasting ones to explore in this book. They each had their own flaws and powers and they used them to their best in the quest for gaining the throne. I loved the magic system which was different from anything I'd read before. The characters felt fantastical, but also really relatable in their diversity (all being LGBTQ+ representative) and there were some really "interesting" / suspicious side characters who added flavour too.
I loved the Victorian style setting. I love reading around this era anyway, so this was a nice little touch and made this feel a little less other worldly.
The writing style grabbed my attention straight away with great world building and a carefully weaved plot. I found it exciting and full of mischief, action and adventure. The pace worked well and held my interest throughout.
I'm not sure whether this is going to be part of a series, but I'd love to explore this world in more detail and would love to see a sequel.
